Beethoven’s Triple Concerto is a tour de force for the soloists, exploring motifs and contrasting moods, like three characters in a play. Repeated three times in the weeks following its premiere, “applause rose to the point of ecstasy” for Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. Blazing, wild, breathless and utterly joyful, it continues to be a work of enduring artistic significance and popularity more than 200 years after its premiere.

bEEThovEn String Quartet No. 7 in F Major, Op. 59, No. 1, “Rasumovsky”
Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Sonata runs the gamut of emotions, from meditative, joyous, and exuberant to forceful. On the last leaf of the sketches for the moving Adagio of his “Rasumovsky” Quartet, the composer wrote, “A weeping willow or acacia tree on my brother’s grave.” This had masonic significance, for the acacia is widely considered the symbolic plant of Freemasonry.

dvořák String Quintet in G Major for two Violins, Viola, Cello, and Bass, Op. 77
A youthful work, the String Quintet lay unknown and unpublished for over a decade until Dvořák returned to it in order to keep up with the demands of his now well-established fame. Unmistakably Dvořák, the addition of the double bass adds sonority and a sense of space, creating an open-air quality to the work.
One of Schumann’s finest works, the Piano Quintet is brilliant and extroverted, melodic
and truly captivating. This was the work that established Schumann’s name among the

The Philharmonic Chorus celebrates 40 years of extraordinary music making with one of the greatest oratorios in the choral orchestral repertory. Mendelssohn’s Elijah was hugely popular from the start; an early critic wrote, “The last note of Elijah was drowned in a long-continued unanimous volley of plaudits, vociferous and deafening...never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art.”
