ENHANCE YOUR EXPERIENCE

LEARN IN ENGLISH OR FRENCHolbi.uOttawa.ca

At the University of Ottawa, bilingualism is a way of life!

A large number of University of Ottawa programs are offered in both of Canada’s official languages. This means that you can choose to study in French, in English, or even in both languages. Some undergraduate programs also allow you to take immersion courses in French to improve your fluency in this language. And the University of Ottawa is one of the few universities to offer such a breadth and depth of postgraduate programs in both official languages.

If you are looking to improve your French or English language skills, the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute can help.

TRANSFORM FROM STUDENT TO RESEARCHERresearch.uOttawa.ca

Rub elbows with some of the world’s top researchers! The University of Ottawa is home to many of Canada’s premier research networks, along with several institutes and centres of excellence. You will have access to state-of-the-art labs and facilities, allowing you to work in a setting that truly inspires innovation and technological breakthroughs.

The University of Ottawa provides second- and third-year undergraduates with opportunities that give them practical experience in their field of study and prepare them for success in graduate studies. For example, students are encouraged to take part in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, in which they spend at least 50 hours working on a research project during the academic year and receive a $1,000 CAD scholarship.

ALTERNATE BETWEEN STUDY AND WORK coop.uOttawa.ca

Enhance your career prospects by combining your university training with paid work experience in your field of study. The University of Ottawa’s Co-operative Education Program allows you to alternate between study terms and work placements. This allows you to take part in four paid work placements of four months each (at the undergraduate level and in some master’s programs).

On average, CO-OP students earn $9,600 CAD during each work placement, and in 2014, the CO-OP program boasted a 96% placement rate. This program is one of the best ways to finance your studies while honing your professional skills and gaining valuable experience in your field.

LEARN BY SERVING OTHERS servingothers.uOttawa.ca

The Centre for Global and Community Engagement offers students a range of opportunities to volunteer, both locally and around the world. Some uOttawa courses even allow you to replace an assignment with a volunteer project in the community, in which you apply the theories you have learned in class. The University of Ottawa will certify your eligible volunteer hours by issuing a Co-Curricular Record, an official document that is a great addition to any CV.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTSuOttawa.ca/admission

As a general rule, to be eligible for a bachelor’s program, international applicants must have completed at least 12 years of studies, including the prerequisite courses for the intended discipline. Before you apply, see the undergraduate admissions office website. Choose Admission requirements > International students.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTSuOttawa.ca/admission

APPLYING TO A BACHELOR’S PROGRAM

Admission to the University of Ottawa is limited and requires an excellent academic record. There are no entrance exams, nor is there automatic access to programs. The admissions committee will give you an answer after assessing your application. Admission is not guaranteed even if you meet all the requirements.

Even if you achieve the required language proficiency test score, we reserve the right to ask you to write an additional test or to take language courses if we consider that your knowledge of the language of study that you have chosen is insufficient.

All tests must have been taken no more than two years prior to the date you apply for admission to the University of Ottawa. If your results in one of these tests do not meet the required level, you can still be considered for admission if you pass one of the make-up courses offered by the University of Ottawa.

See the undergraduate admissions office website. Choose Admission requirements > International students > Language requirements for a list of accepted language proficiency tests in English and French, as well as the minimum results required on them.

uOttawa.ca

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

If you’re applying for an English-language program and you have not completed at least three years of full-time study in an institution where English is the only language of instruction, located in a country where English is an official language, you must provide us with your official results in one of the language tests recognized by the University.

FRENCH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

ADVANCED STANDING AND CREDIT TRANSFERS uOttawa.ca/admission

Applicants from recognized universities and colleges can enter the first or second year of a bachelor program. If you have already completed some university studies, your eligibility for a program and the year to which you are admitted depend on the courses you have taken and the grades you have received.

To enable us to offer you a credit transfer, in other words, to give you advanced standing, you must provide official course descriptions (in English or in French) for all studies you have completed outside Canada, with details on course content, duration and hours of instruction. For the types of academic standing possible see the undergraduate admissions office website. Choose Admission with advanced standing page.

APPLICATION AND DEADLINES uOttawa.ca/admission | www.ouac.on.ca

Universities in the province of Ontario (Canada) share an online application system run by the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).

Apply online through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre website using the OUAC 105F Undergraduate Application for International Candidates form.

Once you have completed and submitted the OUAC 105F form, you must send in your official documents to the undergraduate admissions office of the University of Ottawa so that your application can be considered.

ADMISSION DECISION PROCESS www.infoweb.uOttawa.ca

Within two weeks of your application, the undergraduate admissions office will email you an acknowledgement of receipt. Save it, because it contains the username (your student number) and password to open a session on the student portal, InfoWeb.

InfoWeb will be helpful to you with these and other tasks:

• viewing the status of your application

• knowing what documents are required and whether you must send in additional documents

• checking out financial aid through the Online Scholarships and Bursaries application

It can take us several weeks to look at your file and we don’t send out all admission decisions at the same time. The dates and times for the release of admission decisions vary, depending on the program and the strength of the application. You may receive a decision concerning admission into one program before a decision is issued for another program. If you are admitted into a program of study, the decision will be sent to you by mail and will be also be displayed in your InfoWeb account.

Please check your InfoWeb account regularly to see whether the Admission Office has sent you an admission decision.

BEFORE YOU APPLYgrad.uOttawa.ca

The admission process for a master’s program is competitive. Admission is not guaranteed even if you meet all the criteria. All applicants for a master’s must hold an honours bachelor’s degree in a field related to the program they’re applying for. Admission requirements vary from one program to the next. For the requirements for your program of interest, see Future students > Apply now > Ensure you meet the requirements and deadlines on the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.

DEGREE EQUIVALENCE REQUIREMENTSgrad.uOttawa.ca > International > Admission equivalencies

To find out what degree equivalent you require for your program of interest, see the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website. Please note that it is rare to start a master’s in mid-program, even if you have completed some program requirements.

APPLICATION PROCESSgrad.uOttawa.ca > Future students > Apply now

Before you apply, be sure to read all of the steps described on the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website and to have all of the documents required for admission.

You must then apply online and send a paper copy of your application, along with all of the required documents, to the University of Ottawa academic unit responsible for your program of interest.

MASTER’S THESISgrad.uOttawa.ca > Students >Thesis and research papers

Students admitted to a master’s program with thesis or with research paper must have a supervisor to guide them in their research and writing. Find out as soon as possible which professors are likely to be able to fulfill this role by following the steps and suggestions below.

STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR FINDING A THESIS SUPERVISOR

APPLYING TO A MASTER’S PROGRAM

A professor is not obligated to take on a student if he or she feels it is not a suitable collaboration or if there is insufficient funding.

Find the list of professors who do research on the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website, under Students > Calendars > Teaching staff — Research fields.

4.

3.

2.

1.

Read their profiles to learn more about their research and theoretical approaches.

Make the first move: Email a professor to introduce yourself, discuss your research and ensure that he or she is authorized to supervise your thesis. Be sure to make a good impression by writing in a formal tone, even if it is an email. Include information about yourself such as your areas of interest and how they are similar to those of the professor.

Set up a meeting, by Skype, for example, to get to know each other and show your interest. Have your CV, notes on your project and a list of questions ready. If you are visiting Canada, you can even plan a face to face meeting and a campus tour. For details, see the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website, under Future students > Meet with us.
