Vale: Doug Waring 2nd August 1936 – 29th September

2016 Doug was born on 2nd August 1936. The Club was saddened by the loss of Life Member and Past President Doug Waring on 29 September 2016. Doug joined the Club on 1 October 1950, was an active

patrol member, was President from 1966 to 1977, Chief Instructor in 1964/65 and 1973/74 and made a Life Member in 1975. He was given a ’25 Year National Patrol Service Award in 1977 and his Advanced Resuscitation Certificate in 1976.

Doug ran the shop behind the beach and was an active member of the Club in patrols, competition and administration and was always around the beach remaining a member of the Club until his death. He and his wife Jenny would provide Christmas day lunch to the patrolling members of the Club.

Doug was the driving force behind the construction of the current Club House which opened in 1975. The new Club House replaced the small fibro ‘shack’ and allowed the Club to expand and grow its facilities and services.

Although Doug moved to Queensland in later years he kept in close contact with Macs and was a special guest at the Club’s 70th Anniversary celebration in 2015. Doug’s ashes were spread over the ocean at MacMasters to ensure he will always be at the place he loved so much.

The Club extends its deepest condolences to Doug’s family and loved ones.

DIRECTORS REPORTS

President – Alan Blackman

The President with Caius White – Mark Sherring Award 2016/17 is my third year as President of our wonderful Club and I continue to be amazed at the great generosity of time and effort shown by all our members. It is our members that make our Club “the best Club on the Coast” and I want to extend my thanks to every member for the support and commitment they have made during 2016/17. The overall strength of our Club was recognised by third placing in the Branch ‘Club of the Year’ competition at the Annual Central Coast Award of Excellence dinner.

Our Club’s core responsibility to our Community is to patrol the beach and provide a safer environment for the users of our beach. In 2016/17 we have again delivered very strongly on this responsibility. The patrol statistics for 2016/17 highlighting our success in providing a safer beach:

• Total Patrol Hours: 7,226• Beach Attendance in patrol hours: 68452• Preventative Actions: 850• First Aids: 86• Rescues: 87

I want to congratulate all patrol members for a wonderful achievement and to thank our Patrol Captains and Director of Life Saving Peter Roden for providing the leadership that is necessary to deliver such results. The 850 preventative actions are particularly noteworthy, they show that we are closely watching our patrol area and preventing problems before they occur, well done! I also want to congratulate all the members who achieved 100% Patrol attendance this year; this is a huge achievement, thank you.

Our patrolling members formed 12 Patrols this year and each patrol was well trained by our Director of Education, Graham Johnston and his team. The quality of our training was demonstrated in each rescue, first aid, preventative action and in our excellent performance in the Patrol Inspections with our Club coming second out of the 15 Clubs in the Central Coast Patrol Competition. I received many compliments from members of the public on the quality of our patrols.

This year saw the introduction of a ‘Boaties Patrol’ (Patrol 11). This initiative was introduced by Peter Roden (Director of Life Saving) to help our competition rowers more easily achieve the necessary patrol hours to enable them to compete. The

‘Boaties Patrol’ was a great success and helped to support our traditional strength in surf boat competition.

Growing and maintaining our membership numbers is essential to our future of any Club. With Nippers numbers at 164 (compared to 171 in 2015/16) our target for 2017/18 must be to grow nipper membership. Our total membership for 2016/17 was 534 (compared to 546 in 2015/16) with 156 Patrolling members (162 in 2015/16). While the numbers are reasonably stable it has been very satisfying the see the number of young members who have completed their Bronze Medallion enabling them to take up patrol duties.

The Club’s finances have remained very strong in 2016/17 and the Club is well positioned to meet our future commitments. A great many people have worked very hard to help achieve this outcome with fund raising raffles, donations, sponsorship, bar & hall operations, grants and the support of Local, State and Federal Governments being important contributors. The Club’s summer raffles and the annual doorknock in January achieved excellent results, thank you to all those who helped. The Club has also benefited from generous donations from a great many people. I particularly want to thank all our donors for their support.

The Club is fortunate to have the support of our Sponsors. Belle Property, Killcare is the Club’s Major Sponsor; Barefoot Cafe our Gold Sponsor with Freewater Plumbing and WEX Motorpass our Silver Sponsors. Please support our sponsors, as they support us.

I particularly want to thank our voluntary bar staff who have done such a great job over the year. Our bar revenue is critical to our Club’s activities.

Our strong finances have enabled us to invest in new rescue and surf sport equipment. A new patrol trailer, several rescue boards, digital radios, extra defibrillator and new IRB motor have been added to our rescue equipment, with a new surf boat, oars and some racing Boards to support our competitors. Our nippers have also benefited from a range of extra equipment.

Our Clubhouse is our major asset and we are very fortunate to be the only Club on the Central Coast that owns its Clubhouse. We have continued to improve the facilities in the Clubhouse and this year has seen the completion of the sail structure across the front of the building, the new ‘boat bar’ installed, a new sound system installed, internal painting, the car park resurfaced, glass panels installed across the front of the terrace and numerous repairs and maintenance tasks completed. Steve O’Hara our House and Bar Manager and his team of helpers did a great job keeping the Clubhouse spick and span. Steve, Carole Thompson (Functions Manager) and Graham Johnston (head of our Social Committee) have done a wonderful job in making our Clubhouse an inviting and welcoming place for members and visitors, with entertainment, good service, friendship and great food from the Barefoot Cafe. Further improvements are planned for our Clubhouse in 2017/18.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT

The Club’s performance in surf sports, both junior and senior, has been very strong this year. Our juniors regularly performed well at Carnivals and we achieved 2 gold medals at the NSW State titles, congratulations to Hamish Taylor (Board paddle) and Ben Sapsford & Spencer Morris (Rescue & Resuscitation). Our boat crews have had a great season with many excellent results. We have had many young rowers in training this season and we should field 7 or 8 crews in 2017/18. Peter Norman and Michael Norman are to be congratulated on the fantastic work they have done in building our rowing success.

Unfortunately Aussie Titles was cancelled this season due to adverse weather and safety concerns. This was a big disappointment for our rowing crews who had high hopes of success and had been training very hard for the championships. Next year the titles are in Perth and the Board will be looking at ways to support attendance at the event.

Our rowing program has been supported by some very generous donations and contributions. Greenstone Partners donated the funds for a new surf boat and the Macquarie Group Foundation and staff provided two new sets of oars for our junior rowers. The Sisters of St Josephs continue their longstanding support for our Club by providing boat storage and a training base on the shores of the Broadwater at South Kincumber.

Our successes at competition has its foundation in the activities that are on display at our beach every Sunday morning; be it nippers, skills training, the Sunday Point Score Swim or Macs Maniacs it is great to see the fun and enjoyment that happens every weekend. I would encourage every member, regardless of age, skill or ability to join in and enjoy the camaraderie of participation.

Away from patrols and competition, our Club has continued to provide social and community events. Some of this year’s highlights have included our ANZAC Day service, Surf Club Open Day, Prawn and Oyster Lunch, Five Lands Walk, Macs Mums’ Long Lunch, the junior and senior annual presentations, Christmas carols, Christmas Drinks, State of Origin nights and the regular band entertainment.

The Duke of Edinburgh program continues as an important opportunity for our younger members to excel in community service and personal achievement. Many Club members have already achieved the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award since our Club’s program commenced; this year has seen Jobe Graham and Clancy Beckers achieve the Gold award.

I want to particularly recognise the outstanding effort of the Club’s Board of Directors. It is the hard work of each Director that has delivered the results for our Club. Thank you to David White, Alison McNeill, Steve Sillato, Graham Johnston, Michael Norman, Peter Roden, Craig Lee and Warren Watkins for the support you have provided to me as President, it is greatly appreciated. Both Steve Sillato (Director of Finance) and Warren Watkins (Deputy President) stepped down at the May election meeting after making significant contribution for many years.

John Evans is our new Director of Finance and brings very deep accounting skills to the role and I am sure Jan Sillato will be an outstanding Deputy President.

Lorna Walters and Elaine Hodgkinson deserve special mention for the amazing job they have done as joint Nipper Managers. Both were new to the role in 2016/17 and they achieved amazing success. To our Age Managers, water safety crew and officials, a big thank you.

Good communication is very important for the success of any organisation. Our website, monthly Point Break and Facebook site have been upgraded and revamped in 2016/17. Suzie Morris our Point Break editor and Tim Morris, our Web guru, have spent hours and hours behind the scenes to produce high quality products.

You don’t need to be on the beach to support the running of our Club. There are many areas of administration that need support from our members. The complexity of our operation includes: registration and reporting for GST, a registered entity under the Australian Charities and Not For Profit Commission, holding an On Premises Licence from the Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing, managing substantial Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities, running a large training and skills development program, managing significant financial reporting responsibilities and maintaining a significant building asset. The regulatory and administrative requirements associated with running our Club are substantial and growing every year. Finding sufficient numbers of volunteers to assist in administration is a major challenge for our Club.

I urge all members to step forward and volunteer to help with the running of our Club. Please consider obtaining a qualification to help on patrol (Bronze, IRB, First Aid, Radio) or help out with the Bar, Clubhouse maintenance, or any of the administration tasks.

I look forward to seeing all our members back on the beach for the 2017/18 season.

Deputy President – Warren Watkins

The Director with Jack Montagnoli – Danny Harris Award

Another season has come and gone and our Club continues to benefit from the ongoing support of our many sponsors, donors and supporters.

Thank you to our Major Sponsor, Belle Property. Through Cathy’s ongoing support we were able to complete the patrol trailer, as well as purchase several Club branded tents for use at carnivals. The continuing support of our local business sponsors Richard & Varisra from Barefoot Cafe, Darren & Sharon Dillon of Freewater Plumbing, and our fuel sponsor WEX Motorpass is greatly appreciated.

The Club acknowledges with gratitude its donors of all sizes and without which the Club would not be able to operate as it does. Three donations stand out: from Greenstone Partners funds for our new surf boat, from the Club’s Vice Patron Don Hamilton and family who donated our new bar and from the Macquarie Group Foundation and staff, two new sets of oars.

The Club received donations from SLSNSW and from Central Coast Council as well as further funding from Federal, State and Local Government, as well as Surf Life Saving at a branch and state level through various grants which are available.

The impressive donations are the multitude of separate amounts from the community including the annual door knock and from the Bridge Club, Ladies Social Club and Garden Club and this year Knitters and Natterers Group from Kincumber.

Thank you to our honorary auditors Fortunity Chartered Accountants & Financial Planners and our honorary legal officer Alan Bingham of Peninsula Law. Both organisations have provided ongoing support to our Club for a long period of time.

Thank you to all our supporters, whether through formal sponsorship, donations large and small or services provided - your contribution to our Club is greatly appreciated.

This is my third and final year in this role and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the other committee members for their support during the past three seasons. I also welcome Jan Sillato into the role of Deputy President and who will be assisted by Nadine Norman.

Warren Watkins - Deputy President

Director of Administration – David White

The Director with Will Josling - Sports Coast Award

I am pleased to report that the Club has operated effectively and efficiently during the past year. In doing so the Club has been compliant with the NSW and Australian Government regulatory requirements as well as those of the Surf Life Saving NSW and Surf Life Saving Australia and the Central Coast Branch of SLSNSW which provides valuable support and direction and for which I and the Club offer thanks.

The Club extends its particular thanks to Branch, which provides invaluable support, assistance and advice, and the Central Coast Council with which the Club has a good and mutually cooperative relationship in all respects including in making our beaches safe as well as the financial support the council provides. The Club also thanks Council for its cooperation and support in relation to proposed revetment works being planned for the frontage to the ocean without which any repeat of the June 2016 inundation would challenge the integrity of the Club premises.

Members will be pleased to hear that the Board is operating very efficiently and effectively being particularly well balanced to meet the needs for the direction of the Club into the future, following the departure from the Board of Directors of Membership Les Cousins in 2016 and then, together, Deputy President Warren Watkins and Director of Finance Steve Sillato each of whom have contributed so much to operation of the Club.

Material improvements to the Club have been achieved during the year as a visit to the Club will reveal. Thanks to all concerned in particular House and Bar Manager Steve O’Hara. Yet there is more with plans for renovations to optimise the limited space to deal with the future management of the Club along with the upgrade of external and internal communications technology. Your Board is not only attending to the day to day operation of the Club but looking to and preparing for what lies ahead in these changing and challenging times.

A visit to the web site will show the restructured web site arranged by Club member Tim Morris and highlight the many and varied aspects of the Club’s operation.

The Club is grateful for the invaluable volunteer time and support given by its, now, over 530 members and on which, there not being any employed staff, the Club is entirely dependent. That time along with the financial support of our sponsors and donors allows the Club to operate as it does.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Generally, the Club has structures, processes, personnel, management and financial support to enable it to fulfil its charter, comply with all governance requirements and plan for the challenges of the future. Members can be confident that the Club is positioned to continue to perform its core surf life saving function as well as contribute to and be key to the community of MacMasters Beach.

David White – Director of Administration

Director of Finance – Steve Sillato

The Director with Jessica Hourn – Trendpest Award

Another financial year comes to an end, and so does my two year term as Director of Finance. It has been an incredible experience and I am very proud of my contribution, along with so many other Club volunteers, all helping in many various ways. It has been an honour and privilege to be part of such a great team and work towards making our Club the best on the Central Coast.

The Club does more than provide surf life saving services involving diverse activities for the benefit of our members and as the hub of the MacMasters Beach community.

Once again I would like to thank the Fortunity team for all their help and support throughout the year. Our Financial Statement shows we have had a successful financial year which has been achieved due to the work of our many wonderful volunteers comprising not just patrol members but also all of those who enable the Club to operate and provide the divergent services it provides to the community.

Revenue has come from strong and diverse income streams. For the first time in my long Club involvement, donations eclipsed bar sales as the highest single contributor to our income. Bar operations remain a leading source of income contributing approximately $90k net profit in 2017, thanks to the hard work of the manager, bar staff and duty managers. While patrol members enjoy a well-earned break in the off season, these people work tirelessly week after week, all year round. Opening Saturdays through the summer holiday season, providing bands and other entertainment and holding extra events for special occasions assisted in the good result.

Steve and Carole did an excellent job managing the bar and functions as well as covering for the shortage of bar staff.

I would like to acknowledge our major grants of over $30,000 during the past 12 months. These include $10,850 from the Federal Government, $13,250 from our State Government, $5,000 via the SLSA Beach Safety Equipment Fund grant, $3,644 from SLSNSW and $5,000 from Central Coast Council. All these grants were used to improve our Club and equipment so thank you for all our Government support.

Special mention must be made of our Major Sponsor in Cathy Baker and Belle Properties which not only made a financial commitment to our Club over 5 years, which this year assisted with our new patrol trailer and Club marquees but also helps us with printing, promotion and other tasks to help support our community involvement.

Hall hire had another great income result with over $14,000 due to tireless work by Steve (House Manager) and Carole (Functions manager). Apart from functions, Carole is always looking to find other opportunities and our association with Emma Spivey Yoga has proved very successful and seen many Club members participating.

We also receive appreciated support through an excellent working relationship with Barefoot Cafe’s Richard and Varisra, who provide fantastic food and service to our patrons each and every week, which also helps us fulfil our bar licence requirements. They are also great Gold sponsors of our Club, always getting involved in many events.

Steve Sillato – Director of Finance

Director of Education – Graham Johnston

The Director with Zoe Blades – Beach Encouragement Award

Planning and flexibility was the key to another successful season in surf education, with thirty bronze medallions completed and twenty surf rescue certificate trained and assessed, under the “competence based” system. The bulk of the bronze came from our past “rookies”, who already possessed surf skills, patrol knowledge and basic CPR skills, a bonus for our small team of trainers.

Flexibility within the nipper program allowed our junior members to concentrate on water activities, when favourable conditions prevailed. During rough or poor weather, rotations of first aid, utilizing Club members, developed skills and important education, whilst the noise from the training room was relentless when CPR skills were demonstrated, all with the Macs tradition of “fun” whilst learning. The nipper committee, age managers

Page 10: 2016-2017 - MacMasters Beach SLSC

8

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

and supporting Club members must be applauded for their efforts during these activities.

Remote Area First Aid, was conducted by NSW Surf at the Club, initially to support our Duke of Edinburgh program. Myself, Jim Myers and Greg Ferguson completed this award, with future courses planned. Pain Management (green whistle) was also completed during July, all with the aim of assistance in major trauma events.

Proficiency or award re-qualifications, were well attended, and supported by all active patrolling members, especially our “boaties”, under the guidance of Brad Norman. Attention to compliance and skill level was maintained throughout these re-qualifications.

Patrol skills are at a high standard, as demonstrated in the regular Branch inspections, with all advanced resuscitation proficiencies “upgraded” to the new standard. Forty members completed this upgrade, under the mentoring skills of Rod Jordan, an outstanding asset to the Club. Many Club members still do not have this award, or have not updated their first aid in many years, which is a concern, especially when highly skilled trainers are present. There were no ARTC new awards completed.

The need for more qualified Patrol Captains, was poorly received, with only Ken, Tim and Edan attending the Branch sponsored courses. Disappointing again was the lack of response for IRB drivers, with Mick, Warren and Matt devoting their time on this important necessity for our patrols. Six younger members did complete their IRB Crewman’s. Our trainer and assessors need these courses to remain competent, which was demonstrated when we required an ‘outside’ facilitator to complete an assessment.

MacMasters has past relied on the experience of a large qualified training and assessing team, which has slowly dwindled in numbers, and our focus, and future success relies on developing new training officers within our Club.

The “competency based” training system, highly supported by Surf NSW, allows the Club to attract, sign up and immediately commence skill training to a new member. This system allows flexibility, and is much more “user friendly” to the volunteer training officers. As a Club, we are leaders within Surf Life Saving NSW, in the development of this training method, as opposed to the more commonly utilized “group’ training system.

Thank you and congratulations to all those who achieved further qualifications as follows.

Surf Rescue Certificate: Megan Haigh, Jamie McNeill, Saba Horne, Tara Booth, Oscar Crowe, Larni Franckiewicz, Leah Payne, Simon Praszkowski, Poppi Lever, Molly Sheppard, Anya Paszkowski, Alex Walters, Danielle Macpherson, Grant Sapsford, Graham Russell, Corentin Correllis (Coco), Steven Norris, Clarke Perkins.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Director of Life Saving – Peter Roden

The Director with Brad Norman – Patrol Person of the Year

I would like to thank all of our patrol teams for a great season! There were no fatalities during 7226 patrolled hours on the beach. We ensured that the 68,000 visitors to MacMasters had a safe, well managed beach to enjoy. The Patrol Captains, Graham Johnston, Warren Watkins, Jim Myers, Michael Bambridge, Bruce Staples, Matt Ryan, Vince Roberts, Clancy Beckers, Hamish MacPherson, Brad Norman and Alan Blackman, kept the chaos under control each weekend.

The capability and skills of our patrols were tested during 12 beach closures, 87 rescues, 850 preventative actions and 89 first aids resulting in 3 calls for the ambulance. A number of “Out of Hours Rescues” and First Aids were also performed by our members with the help of the local surfing community.

The strength and ability of our 12 patrol teams was recognised when we achieved a second in the Patrol Competition at Branch level. I would like to recognise Graham Johnston and Paul Graham for their support in this award as they raised the performance levels of all the patrol teams. A great result for all Team members from Rookies to Captains.

Congratulations to:

An amazing 105 Members completed 100% Patrol Attendance and I would like to thank the following for the extra effort they have contributed to make the year a success:• Jan Sillato and Rod Jordan for again managing and

stocking the First Aid Room• James Crowther for looking after the IRB motors (and

installing the roll out airline)• Anthony Woods for his electrical work in the Patrol Shed• Phil Boxsell for his enthusiasm and help with the Patrol

Rosters and organising support from WEX• Suzie and Tim Morris for the Patrol notifications on Face Book.• Lyn and Danny Drummond for the OH&S Inspections• Mick Morrison for his years of work on the IRB’s

• Peter McNeill for his work on the Patrol Trailer.

Christmas Day Volunteer Patrols were again well manned and I thank all those who gave up time to help out. Thankfully this year was a bit calmer than last year.

To support our operations this year we have received new equipment through the following sponsorship and grants: • Belle Properties sponsored our new Patrol Trailer which

is very popular with Patrols on the beach, carrying all the gear and providing a visible, secure platform from which we can operate.

• WEX MOTORPASS sponsored our IRB Fuel and Repairs.• Surf Life Saving Central Coast & NSW - 2 x Soft Rescue

Boards, 1 x Soft Racing Mal, 2 x Rescue Tubes, 1 x First Aid Kit, 1 x Remote Coms Speaker, 1 x Hytera Radio, 1 x Patrol Tent, 1 x Rescue Board (Patrol Comp. prize!)

You are all amazing and I believe the following explains why the variety of talents each member brings to thier patrol and the role they perform is important:

“A team is a small number of people with complimentary skills committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable” – Katzenburg & Smith

Thank you for all your efforts this year and I look forward to seeing you all next season on the beach.

The 100% Patrol Attendees – Well done and thank you

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

Director of Membership – Alison McNeill

I’d like to start by thanking each and every one of you – our members – for helping make MacMasters Beach Surf Club the special place that it is. We are a Club run completely by volunteers who help keep the Club running and keep our beach safe. There were so many activities our members were involved in this year culminating in 2 Gold Medals at State for Hamish Taylor for U10 Board Race and Ben Sapsford & Spencer Morris for U10/11 2 Person R&R. Congratulations boys.

Thank you to our two wonderful Managers of Sunday Activities this year, Elaine Hodgkinson & Lorna Walters, who put in a huge amount of work to ensure nippers ran smoothly each week. To our age managers, thank you for teaching the nippers and rookies. They had so much fun on the beach and in the surf with water safety members also. We had participants in every carnival on the coast and at the State Championships at Swansea/Belmont. Congratulations to our competitors who made us all so proud. Thank you also to Trent Martin & Jan Sillato for training our board riders and Hayley Hogger & Belinda Cohen for training our R&R and March Past teams. To all our parents who step up to help with water safety, carnival officials, assistant age managers and with anything that needs doing -we need you all back next season!

We had rookies at the Rookie Challenge at Terrigal Surf Club, helping with Ducks for Bucks at The Entrance, selling raffle tickets and having a fun day at AquaSplash Gosford. Central Coast Branch of Surf Life Saving organise various camps for age groups 13 years and older. This year these were attended by our members listed below.

Youth Development Camp 13s-14s at Broken Bay: Emily Hodgkinson, Mason Cusack, Poppi Lever, Oscar Crowe, Leah Swanston, Molly Sheppard.

GAP Year Youth 15s Engagement Program at Terrigal: Angus Dominguez, Megan Ryan, Malcolm MacPherson.

Youth Leadership Program 15s – 17s at Lennox Head: Hannah Cusack, Ellie Crowe.

Youth Opportunity Makers Workshop: Hannah Cusack & Cerys O’Grady Cousins applied and Hannah Cusack was successful so spent 4 days at the Collaroy Centre in Sydney.

We finally held our Senior Club Championships with 15 members stepping up to compete. Next season we need more of our 15 years and older competing at our Club Champs and at carnivals too.

Our boat crews doubled in numbers this season and led by Peter and Mick Norman, competed in many competitions up and down the east coast. All crews performed extremely well in all carnivals. Our 5 crews were all present at the Aussie Titles on the Gold

Coast – which were cancelled! With the 4 new young crews for next season, we should be a huge presence at boat carnivals.

Our Duke of Edinburgh members completed their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards with a change of leadership from Graeme Jones to Geoff Dominguez. Our Duke kids attended camps, raised funds with a Masters BBQ, sold raffle tickets, helped at the Prawn & Oyster Luncheon and set up for the 5 Lands Walk which starts at MacMasters Beach.

The Prawn & Oyster Luncheon was a wonderful day out and raised money for the Dickinson Fund to help our competing members purchase equipment needed. An enormous thank you to Ken Scriven, Graham Johnston and Jim Myers.

Christmas was a huge celebration this season, with many members of our Club and community coming together. We started with the Nipper Christmas afternoon with activities from 3pm. Santa even came in the IRB to hand out lollies to the nippers! The sausage sizzle for the nippers was cooked by the MacMasters Beach Ladies Club. We had Christmas Carols with the local live band which brought more families down to the Club. Volunteer drinks were served to all our volunteer members and the café was open also. It was a huge night with several hundred people in attendance.

We had a special Presentation Day for our Under 6 and Under 7 nipper members with a sausage sizzle, on their last day of nippers for the season. The families and kids really enjoyed their special time being cheered on by the older age groups. Our Junior Presentation afternoon was very well attended, with a great atmosphere to celebrate our nippers and rookies. The age managers put a lot of thought in to the awards this year. The recipients received vouchers to Three Points Surf Shop at Avoca Beach and received an action photograph taken by the wonderful Suzie Morris during the season.

Most of our members attended the Senior Presentation Night on the 6th May to cheer on our award recipients. We had record numbers of 100% Patrol Attendance Awardees, so many Education Awards received, Duke of Edinburgh Certificates given out as well as all the major Club Awards. Congratulations to everyone who received an award.

Thank you to Barefoot Café for the delicious food provided at both Presentations and to all members who helped with both events. A huge thank you to Lynda Gundry and family who again ran our BBQ on Sunday mornings all season. Without Paula Vella, Denise Sherring, Pauline Josling, Jo Finnelley and Amanda Queripel behind the scenes, our members would not be registered in our Club, for carnivals or have uniforms – thank you ladies! To our dedicated members who run our bar, we give you our thanks and hope that more of our members step up to go on the bar roster. Thank you, Steve and Carole for all you do to keep the bar and Club functions running smoothly.

Macs Maniacs runs between the patrol seasons and all members seem to enjoy running/walking and getting wet when it’s cold. Thanks to Jim Myers who is the leader of this group of maniacs!

Finally, I’d like to thank my fellow Board members who really helped me adjust to the role as Director of Membership. It has been a steep learning curve but I have enjoyed the ride so far and value your input and guidance. We need to continue as we are as a Club for families while growing our numbers to ensure we stay viable for the future. I’m looking forward to next season with the best little Club on the coast, MacMasters Beach Surf Club.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Director of Competition - Craig Lee

The Director with the Team of the Year: U13 Board Relay Danielle Macpherson, Molly Sheppard, Poppi Lever

Once again the sun sets on a long hot and busy 2016/2017 season. I reflect on the year with mixed emotions. Very pleasing with the progress that the Nippers are making and to see the commitment that our nippers are bringing to the Club on the podium, across the 4 carnivals including Branch, a massive haul of 30 gold, 28 silver and 34 bronze with a few 1-2 combinations in there as well. The icing on the cake being our great achievement at State, with a team of 29, down on previous seasons due to the carnival moving from being local to our neighbouring Hunter Branch, culminated in successfully bringing home 2 gold medals with Hamish Taylor in the U/10 Male Board Race and Spencer Morris & Ben Sapsford in the U10/U11 2 person R & R, well done lads.

Sadly, for as long as anybody can remember MacMasters Beach SLSC could not field any participants in any categories at local, Branch or State carnivals in the Open or Masters Division. This has brought a tear to the eye of many with a good ground swell of support ensuring that we do not get ourselves in this position again. Jump on board, let’s make this memorable next season.

The Boaties continue to go from strength to strength despite not being able to crew a Men’s Open team. This season saw the emergence of some of our young guns which allowed us to field 5 teams. Some great talent coming through in the U/19 ranks ensures Macs remains competitive in years to come. Macs continues to produce excellent results and can be attributed to the great dedication shown by the brothers Norman, Mick & Pete. A more detailed report can be found under the Boat Captains report.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my fellow Board members for their unwavering support and enthusiasm throughout the past season.

This season, unlike any other could not have been achieved without the continued support from a band of loyal volunteers performing their roles week after week which make up all things Competition. A huge thank you to Trent Martin and Jan Sillato for board coaching, Steve Kleppen for running the handicap swim and board Sunday sessions. Jo Finnelley assisted by Val Crowe on the art of Carnival Manager. Thank you also to Water Safety Officials, Leigh Walters & Frank Hodgkinson as well as Pete and Mick Norman for their continued support and wisdom in the boat arena. Many thanks also to those who helped these guys in their roles, much appreciated.

Well done to all participants in the competitions and congratulations to successful entrants. See you on the beach next season.

Craig Lee – Director of Competition

Carnivals

Our first Carnival of the season was at Wamberal. We all arrived to not good water conditions. After lots of discussion water events were moved to the southern end of the beach. Eight u8s competing for the very first time and they did MacMasters very proud with all of them coming away with at least one ribbon, some with multiple ribbons. We had some great results in and out of the water. Our March past team started the season with a Silver and the first time our newly formed 5 person R & R team came home with Gold. The day ended with the wind coming up and taking our tent, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Our next Carnival started early at Toowoon Bay where our domination continued in medals with R & R and Marchpast. Our nippers grew in confidence and we came home with some very good results.

The New year started with a Carnival in Terrigal. MacMasters Beach achieved a very creditable 9 Gold medals and a lot of Silver and Bronze. We had 13 Nippers that represented MacMasters Beach this season who did us proud on some challenging courses.

Our season ended with our first away State Championships in a few years. A team of 29 competitors joined our old friends “Rain and Huge surf” in Swansea Belmont. It really wouldn’t be state without rain! However our new shade tents not only looked fantastic they also kept us dry. Special congratulations goes to Hamish, Ben and Spencer who brought home GOLD. Our new uniforms were a huge hit with everyone. I was so proud of all the hard work these nippers put in throughout the season which was rewarded with MacMasters coming 29th out of 87 competing Clubs and equal 5th on the Central Coast.

None of this would be possible without all the amazing volunteers. Thank you age managers, officials, coaches parents and all the nippers who give it a go. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year in this role and I am looking forward to 2017-2018 season

Jo Finnelley - Team Manager/Junior Carnival registrar

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Boat Captain – Peter Norman

We kicked off the season with the launch of a new boat donated by Greenstone Partners. This is the 3rd boat donated by Greenstone, so a big thanks to Scott and Jane Malcolm. Thank you very much to Macquarie Bank who donated two sets of oars which will be ready for next season’s competition. Volvo, Mack and UD Trucks generously provided the boaties with a massive beach tent for shelter at carnivals.

Support of this nature is very much appreciated and is critical to the success of the impressive number of five boat crews in the Club this year. With the number of new and young rowers the future of boating in the Club looks impressive.

It is rewarding to see the integration that exists in the Club with this year creditably performing beach patrol duties in addition to their boat commitments. The Club is proud of its five boat crews which competed with very good results

The Reserve Grade Men boat manned by Mark White, Wade Brooks, Bunks White, Brad Norman and Michael Norman sweep achieved a creditable 6th in the Streets Series-2nd, Branch Titles-2nd at the ASRL Titles -

The U/23 Women crew of Nikki Sillato, Mackenzie Donovan, Tegan Powell, Maddie O’Donohue, and Michael Norman at sweep were 3rd in the Streets Series-

The Open Women boat crewed by Noddy Norman, Claire Walsh, Lamb Owen, and Lisa Mount with Peter Norman at sweep were 1st in the Streets Series and 3rd in the Branch Titles.

The U/19 Male boat with Toby McNeill, Alex Halls, Joe Rodwell, and Joel Vella with Michael Norman sweep came in 3rd at the Branch Titles.

The U/19 Female crew of Ella Buteaux, Millee Powell, Tegan Powell and Phoebe Harries with Michael Norman at sweep performed well to achieve 2nd in the Streets Series and an excellent 4th at the State Titles.

All crews trained and competed well this season. The scope of talent, skill and experience in our rowing crews is a real asset to the Club. Among the Club’s highlights was having a Mac’s boat relay team winning Silver at the Branch Titles and to see the Under 19 Female Crew rank in the Top Four Crews at State Titles is a fantastic achievement.

It will be exciting to watch this large number of committed young rowers as they mature in years and experience. Well done girls and boys.

As in past years - thanks to the Graham Elliss for glass repairs to surf boat equipment and to the Sisters of St Joseph for the use of the boat shed storage at South Kincumber. It is the continued support of these people and our very generous sponsors that allow us to train, compete and be active members of this lifesaving community.

Handicap Point Score – Steve Kleppen

Well done to all members participating in the Handicap swim and board.

This season we saw an unusual number of beach closure days due to the weather conditions but when the weather cleared Macs had a big turnout with both the junior and senior members.

This year the swim finalists were extremely close with only 8 points separating 1st and 5th on the very last day of the season. Congratulations to Lyn Drummond for winning the swim.

In the Handicap board many a week the competitors crossed the line together or were only 20 secs from 1st to last. This year we saw Geoff Dominguez take out the board event by riding a wave to reach the finish line. Congratulations Geoff.

The Handicap swim and board are very social. A friendly competition where all ages can compete.

I would like to thank all our participants, our water safety crews and a special thanks to Tracy Przybyla for doing an excellent job calling the starts and running the junior members.

See you all next season.

Steve Kleppen.

Board Training

I would like to acknowledge the commitment of all our competitors and parents to training and competition and thank them for their time and effort over the season.

MacMasters Beach Surf Club will continue to go from strength to strength and our teams will grow larger and provide new challenges and allow us to expand our competition into the future. Over the past few seasons we have had growth at board training. This goes on to more competitors getting in the water at carnivals and the Club experiencing success.

Throughout the year, MacMasters Beach SLSC has had an awesome competitive season. We accomplished a lot of great carnival results in all areas of Surf Sports including the Newcastle permanent ironman, Kracka Catho Challenge, local carnivals, Branch and NSW Championships. We had multiple first time individual medalists at Central Coast Carnivals which was very exciting to see.

Next season we see one of our strongest age groups move onto the longboards. This is very exciting as they have expressed a great interest to compete in the national youth championships held in Perth 2018! It will be great to see these members competing on the national stage.

Most important thing is that we have fun out there. All in all a great season and I look forward to a bigger and better one next year. Thanks.

Trent Martin – Board Coach

Water Safety – Leigh Walters & Frank Hodgkinson

A huge thanks to all who assisted Frank and Leigh at all the carnivals this year & look forward to the continued support this coming summer & more rookies to assist.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Macs Maniacs

This our 17th year was a milestone in that we had record numbers attending, and also the Club covered all our expenses. This meant that it was free to swim every Sunday!

We had our traditional theme days: Heritage Day; Favourite Sporting Team; Red Day; Circus Day and the most enjoyable Ice Berg Day. Also we did an Inflatable Day which was very funny, but no doll!.

We ran, walked jogged to Copa and back, then sometimes ventured round the rocks to jump off and swim back.

The Bird was won every week by a worthy Maniac. The most converted award: “Maniac of the Year” was won by David White, for a maniac to swim in Arctic waters!!!!!!! Polo shirts were the reward for completing the required 8 swims and a small number turned up to the Maniacs Ball to receive their prize.

Thanks to the Club for their support and for all the fun loving souls that enjoy Macs Maniacs.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Our Duke of Edinburgh program has run several camps this year including Newnes, Brisbane Waters, Bungonia Gorge & Bouddi National Parks. These camps all involved hiking and bushwalking, with caving added in at Bungonia Gorge.

Our participants have all been involved in Surf Patrols, fund-raising with seafood raffles & sausage sizzle at Masters Hardware, assisting with the Red Shield appeal, annual MacMasters Beach Surf Club door knock, setting up for the Five Lands Walk & helping with the Clean4shore program.

Collectively our participants have completed 19 new awards through the year.

The Supervisors were Geoff Dominguez, Graeme Jones, Matt Hingerty, Sue Westgarth, canoes brought up to meet us at Patonga creek by Peter Offner & Andrew Duck.

Eight Boys attended from Macs SLSC for a great experience in bush walking, remote camping & survival skills in cold weather.

House Management

During the year the Club house has undergone some up grading to its appearance whilst maintaining the presentation of its long and proud history and traditional associations. A new audio system has been installed increasing all aspects of the functionality of the premises. New gutter guard and fixings, new nipper room shelving, patching and painting of most walls within the Club have been completed. We have a new Life Members wall, a History Wall, new alcove lighting, shade sail, glass balustrade, replaced rollers on bifold windows, car park resurfacing, training room paint and new patrol room roller doors following the damage of the June storm.

Design and preparatory works are underway for further works to optimise the utilisation of the limited space we have in the building and this proposal is expected to be put to members for consultation in the not too distant future.

Steve O’Hara – House Manager

Bar Manager

As will be seen from the Financial Statement the bar has performed well this year from its Friday and Sunday night openings producing important funds to support the operation of the Club. The holiday seasons are important to the bar revenue with the considerable and very much appreciated support from visitors particularly over the Christmas period

None of this would happen without the volunteer duty managers and bar staff whose efforts contribute to the financial support of the Club and whose contributions are appreciated particularly during the busy holiday periods and when asked to do even more on the occasions when the Club is hired for functions.

A recommendation was adopted by the Board to upgrade the bar facility which has now been completed and received well by all. With the Clubs long established rowing tradition what is more appropriate than a bar constructed from a surf boat.

With assistance from and with thanks to Ben Van Den Hooven a new computerised POS system has increased efficiency and enabled the implementation of a ‘member card’ the holding of which attracts the right to a member discount which has been well accepted.

Sponsors and Donors

The Club has continued through the last year to receive the benefits that flow from the generosity of the members of the nearby and wider community.

Our sponsors underpin the confidence of the Club to continue and plan for its future and as such are extraordinarily valuable to and valued by the Club. Our sponsors are proudly named on our back cover

The Club is also proud to have a large number of donors who contribute to the financial strength of the Club on a regular basis with all levels of donation each of which is important to the Club’s financial capacity to perform its surf life saving and community services. There are too many to individually name in this report and some are identified on the back cover. To you all – thank you again.

Community

The Club continues, as it has for many years, to be the focal point for the MacMasters Beach community with frequent informal gatherings and/or meetings at the Club house. Many weddings, parties, wakes, training sessions and events from and/or related to the community occur throughout the year.

The Garden Club, Ladies Social Club and Bridge Club meet at the Club house on a regular basis and give important, and appreciated, financial and personal support to the Club itself. Community and Club use is enhanced by the services of the Barefoot Café operating from part of the Club and with which the Club has a very cooperative and interactive relationship.

The popular Five Lands Walk starts with breakfast at the Club and this year was estimated to involve some 20,000 walkers over the whole day.
