Board of Trustees Board President

This year we sent 71 wonderful children to preschool, giving them a better chance to lead happier, more productive lives. We know this from the numerous studies about the far reaching effects of attending preschool for less advantaged children, but far better, we know

it by speaking with parents of our children and former Preschool Advantage alumni.

When I say ‘we’ I truly mean we. You are part of the amazing Preschool Advantage community bounded by the belief that every child deserves a chance at success.

As donors, we are decision makers at charitable foundations and corporate philanthropy programs, preschool students who contribute spare coins to a jar, parents of alumni, small business owners, philanthropists, and those who simply said yes to a friend. We give our money, our time, our office furniture, our vacant office space, and whatever else is needed.

As ambassadors, we spread the good news about Preschool Advantage to our Facebook friends, bosses, co-workers, employees, neighbors, those who might need our assistance and those who can help Preschool Advantage.

As part of an army of more than 100 volunteers, we evaluate our preschools to monitor quality, comb over applications, and interview families so we can help the most deserving, monitor our finances, invest our endowment, ensure accounta-bility on our audit committee, meticulously plan and implement every detail to ensure our events run flawlessly, and do whatever it takes.

I want to say to each of you — congratulations, great job, and let’s do even better this year. We have ambitious goals to make major increases in the number of children we serve. How are we going to do it? Together!

Thank you,

Our Students

One of the most rewarding experiences at Preschool Advantage comes when we are able to help a family that is truly experiencing a crisis, causing them personal and financial challenges, with no other source of help.

In 2014, one particular fami-ly found themselves in exact-ly this situation. They had recently learned that their second child, Sienna, was suffering from a rare form of cancer and needed to engage in a clinical trial in New York City. At that point, the family was just beginning to experience the stress of this trauma on their lives, along with the financial impact as Sienna’s mom reduced her working hours to deal with the situation (including time spent traveling to NYC several times a week for treatments.) With the emotional impact affect-ing the entire family, it was very important for their oldest child, Thomas, to be in school with other children, but financial pressures were making this a remote possibility. At the suggestion of our partner preschool, The Presbyterian Church Nursery School, the family applied for assistance from Preschool Advantage for Thomas.

Preschool Advantage offered Thomas placement at the Presbyterian Church Nursery School in Morristown where he enjoyed many hours just be-ing a child. He has since moved on to second grade at Bee Meadow School, and enjoys reading and

learning. He is very inquisi-tive and curious, and a top-performing student in his class. His favorite activities are technology, electronics, and all sports.

Thankfully, after three years of surgeries and treatments, Sienna is in remission, but will continue PT and OT for several years. With Preschool

Advantage assistance, she also attended the Pres-byterian Church Nursery School. Sienna’s teacher noted, “It was so important that she continue with nursery school so that she could focus on normal daily activities, and not just visits to the doctor.” Sienna is active in athletics, focusing on gymnastics and swimming. According to her proud parents, she is a very responsible child, looking out for her sib-lings and helping at home. This fall she will join Thomas at Bee Meadow Elementary School. The family is still very much a part of the Presbyterian Nursery School community, with their two younger children currently attending the school.

“We are extremely grateful to Preschool Advantage for providing our children the opportunity to attend preschool during these difficult financial times,” said their parents. “It is our hope that our children are best prepared to engage in the academic challenges ahead in elementary school as a result of attending preschool. Thank you, Preschool Advantage, for making this possible.”

Each year a dedicated team of Preschool Advantage volunteers reviews all of the family applications. It’s a challenging yet fulfilling labor of love. The reward is attending

the annual orientation and meeting all of our wonderful students and their families.

Mother Nature took front and center, moving our 21st Annual Golf Invitational event to July 17th, when 82 golfers enjoyed a gorgeous day at the newly-renovated Morris County Golf Club in Morristown.

With test-of-skill contests sprinkled throughout the course, the golf portion of the day ended with a shoot-out at Hole 18 for those who qualified. Winner Bob Morin took home $500! The winning team was a singles foursome: Rick Thoeni, Darius Matousek, Matthew Mirett, and Jim Lynch. Congratulations to all! The Silent Auction offered exciting

golf packages at some of the most prestigious golf courses in the state. Our 50/50 Raffle offered a limited number of tickets at $100 each. The event was a huge success, raising enough money at this event to send over 15 children to preschool for a full year. Mark your calendar for next year’s Golf Invitational, taking place on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. You will not want to miss this!

Turning Leaves 2016 Funded 13 Children to Attend Preschool!

Last year’s Turning Leaves Benefit Dinner honored longtime corporate supporter, PNC, and gave special recognition to The Shelley Kutikoff Memorial Scholarship Fund/The Family of Shelley Kutikoff, and partner preschool, Rainbow Montessori School of Madison.

“We have been proud to provide financial support to Preschool Advantage for many years under PNC Grow Up Great,” said Joe Whall, Senior Vice President at PNC. “Extensive research indicates that the return on investments in high-quality early education and school readiness initiatives are significant and long lasting; impacting our children, our society, and the health of our economy for generations to come.”

Richard Kutikoff shared, “Looking back at a very difficult time for myself and Shelley’s entire family, we were so pleased we had the foresight to establish this fund. It keeps both Shelley’s memory alive and helps so many children get a head start for the rest of their lives.”

Preschool Advantage is delighted to honor former Board President and tireless volunteer, Robert Ward, and longtime financial supporter, Mike Salerno of Salerno Duane Auto Group, for their generosity to the

children in our com-munity. Also being recognized are our partner preschool Union Hill Church Preschool in Denville, and former board member, James McNamee, in memoriam.

Each year, Preschool Advantage receives applications from an amazing group of families, all trying to do the best for their child under often very difficult circumstances. Their commitment to giving their children the best start in life is always inspiring. Placing the calls to advise them that they will be receiving tuition assistance is one of the most rewarding things that our volunteers get to experience, even if tears are often involved! Here are some first-hand expressions of thanks we received this year from families truly grateful for the gift that has been given to them thanks to the generosity of our wonderful donors.

“Jill” is thriving. I have seen such positive changes in her education and personal growth. So grateful for Preschool Advantage!

I feel truly blessed to be part of this program. My daughter is very fortunate to have this experience, and Rainbow Montessori makes it even more special. I have high hopes for her academically.

“Sasha” has developed beautifully this year. She has many great friends and is genuinely excited about school and learning new things. The Preschool Advantage program has helped our family tremendously in allowing us to send our 3 kids to school at once!

I am so blessed to have my child become part of a program that has helped him with all his child development. We have seen so much growth. He is more expressive and very independent.

“I make a donation to Preschool Advantage for the outstanding program that you operate for

our youth. Such a needed program, thank goodness our town has you. Bless you all.”

Our Families

I would like to thank you for helping me give my daughter the opportunity to be able to go to preschool. I don’t think I could have done it without you all. It costs so much these days for kids to get an education. I appreciate the program. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.

Without Preschool Advantage it would be impossible for “Juliana” to attend school. Thanks to this opportunity she is more ready for Kindergarten.

It has been very important for me and my child that she attend the preschool program because it has helped her learn a lot. And it is good she gets to work with other children and especially to learn a lot of English.

“Amy” has developed beautifully this year. She has many great friends and is genuinely excited about school and learning new things.
