For a recent birthday, the SE team bought me a book of hauntingly beautiful photography of derelict buildings and a super-charged battery pack for my phone. They know me too well; I’m often on the move, and always looking around me for inspiration. A new collaboration could be – and often is - just one thought away; listening to music in different places offers fresh perspective and the chance to draw new connections.

Being Artistic Director of SE is often time-consuming, sometimes daunting, and always eye-opening. But mostly it’s life-affirming. We never forget how lucky we are to bring music to people. On an average day, I might talk through programme ideas with a world-renowned soloist before helping a seven-year-old cellist from Dundee with bow technique. What links each day is being surrounded by outstanding musicians who are equally dedicated to and fascinated by music, and who help me to bring it to life at each and every event with their talent and passion.

I very much look forward to sharing our music-making with you across 16-17.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO Performing live is our first and foremost passion, and each season we tour

Scotland, the UK and the world with high quality events. In each programme, we try to present well known pieces alongside new, different or unexpected works with the aim of introducing people to something they might not have heard before. We also actively seek out people to collaborate with, whether that’s other musicians or artists from other forms.

About four times a year, the whole band sets up in a Scottish city or location as part of our SE Residencies series. The idea is to bring the joy of making and listening to music to as many people as possible by taking it out of the concert hall and putting it directly in the community.

This can mean anything from a pop-up performance in a shopping centre, to a workshop with primary school children, to a collaboration with drama students; the events are chosen and programmed after discussions with members of the local community about what they want and need.

Scottish Ensemble has been invited to play on some of the most prestigious stages across the world. From the Shanghai Concert Hall to New York Town Hall, our reputation across the world – not only as the UK’s leading string orchestra, but as one of its most innovative and forward-thinking groups - continues to build. This season, we take one of our collaborative projects, Goldberg Variations – ternary patterns for insomnia, to Europe.

SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE (SE) IS A GROUP OF OUTSTANDING MUSICIANS WHO CHAMPION MUSIC WRITTEN FOR STRINGS, CROSSING GENRES, PERIODS, STYLES AND ART FORMS TO MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS.

You might find us playing in a prestigious concert hall, a shopping centre, your local pub or an international music festival.

By performing in as many different places as possible, we aim to reach as many different people as possible, letting them experience and enjoy classical music in a way that is relevant to them.

Linking each and every event is a commitment to creating a live experience of the absolute highest quality.

TRANSFIGURED NIGHT

Richard Dehmel’s poem, Verklärte Nacht, depicts two lovers walking through a shadowy forest. By the light of the moon, the woman reveals a dark secret: she is carrying another man’s child. Schoenberg’s dramatic, emotionally-charged setting of the poem caused controversy at its 1902 premiere, due not only to its taboo subject matter but the actual notes, too - his forward-thinking harmonic palette was met with outrage. Today, the piece is celebrated as one of the composer’s most melodic and accessible pieces - dark, tense, atmospheric, chromatic and dramatic in equal measure.

Brahms’ sextet is quite simply a stunning piece of music. Its second movement, regularly used in film and TV, contains some of the most beautiful chamber music written for strings.

Mendelssohn’s music was notoriously banned in 1936 by a Nazi regime which labelled the Jewish composer “a dangerous accident of musical history”.

Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre, dashed off in the autumn of 1939, represents the contrasting hope and hopelessness of a country plunged into war. Arvo Pärt and Pēteris Vasks use their music as a vehicle for spiritual questioning, to transcendent effect, and Bach’s ebullient E major concerto is a testament to the pure, uplifting joy of melody and harmony.

Bach knew how to throw a party. So did Telemann, and Purcell. With the great Baroque masters as our inspiration, we’re taking five string instruments, a harpsichord and some Baroque percussion and hosting our own.

From the soaring pomp of Bach’s Air on the G String, one of the most famous melodies in history, to the rhythmic elegance of the orchestral suite from Purcell’s Fairy Queen opera, the sound of the Baroque court is our rich drawing board for this concert of historic dance music. Telemann’s Tafelmusik will be served with a twist. Playing from an electronic ‘sound table’ - one of his own creations - percussionist and composer Johannes Fischer will enhance the joyous collection of 18th-century dances by creating loops and patterns from fragments of the music as you hear it live.

Evocative music from turn-of-the-century France is enhanced and transformed by the rich sound of a full string orchestra in these inventive arrangements. A particular highlight is Barshai’s arrangement of Ravel’s String Quartet in F major, commissioned by SE in 1987, and still one of our favourite pieces to perform.

Following a week of intensive coaching, string musicians from RCS play alongside SE in this public concert. To be Polish and arrive at the end of the war unscathed was atriumph for Bacewicz and I can feel her nationalism and optimism for the future pouring out of the music. As she weaves her favourite Polish folk songs into a style not dissimilar to Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, she writes with such an inherent understanding of string playing that I find it is always a joy to play.

I first heard this played live by the Nash Ensemble and Lawrence Power, on viola, and it blew me away. The second movement is an obvious highlight; the music seems to be straining to express something far beyond the medium of its conception. OUR HIGHLIGHTS This is such a magical piece. Vasks takes you on an epic journey, evoking vast landscapes, brooding mountains and open seas, in contrast with sparkling ice crystals, dancing fireflies and laughing nymphs. The slow moving passages suggest human struggle - sometimes bleak, sometimes hopeful. I also love the ending - was it all a dream?!

Fast becoming known as one of the world’s most distinctive string ensembles, in recent years we have been invited to perform in China, Taiwan, the USA, Brazil, and countries across Europe. This season, we are proudly taking Goldberg Variations - ternary patterns for insomnia, our collaboration with contemporary Swedish dance company Andersson Dance, to venues across the continent. Since its premiere in Stockholm in September 2015, this playful, inventive interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations - in which musicians and dancers are choreographed together - has received critical acclaim and standing ovations during its 17 performances.

OUR REPUTATION ACROSS THE GLOBE IS EVER GROWING.

SE Residencies are all about bringing the joy of making and listening to music to as many people as possible by taking it out of the concert hall and putting it directly in the community.

So far, we’ve been to Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Perth, Mull, Shetland and Dumfries, hosting everything from pop-up performances in supermarkets and shopping centres to tea dances, workshops, film screenings, life drawing classes and so much more.

IMMERSION DAYS

Last season, we expanded our Residencies by adding Immersion Days, where we add context to an evening concert by putting on a pre-concert talk, as well as working with local partners during the day.

NEW COMMISSION BY JAMES REDWOOD

We are thrilled to be working with composer James Redwood on a brand new piece which we will be able to perform with people at all musical levels, bringing together absolute beginners, professional musicians and everyone in between and strengthening musical ties within the community. Come along to one of our Residency concerts to hear it for yourself - it’ll feature in some of our performances. James’ previous commissions include large-scale collaborative and wonderfully creative pieces for Glyndebourne Opera, the Royal Philmarmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Join us for an edible and audible feast! After an afternoon rehearsing with local musicians, we’ll put down our instruments and don our aprons in order to make a meal alongside members of the community and local celebrity chef Marian Armitage. All hands on deck! In one of our rarer appearances off dry land, we’re inviting schools and other groups along during the day for an exciting performance which recaptures what the atmosphere might have been like when this wonderful ship was in service. In the evening, renowned harpist Catriona McKay and fiddler Chris Stout come on board for a performance of Sally Beamish’s dramatic Seavaigers, which tells the story of a treacherous sea journey across Scotland’s stormy east coast, from Dundee to Stornaway. TUE 6 SEPIN PARTNERSHIP WITH NINEWELLS CHILDREN’S WARD & MAGGIE’S CENTRE

Patients at Ninewells’ Children’s Ward are treated to a special performance from a quartet of SE musicians, choosing from a Musical Menu which features film themes, pop songs, and some well-known classical pieces.

Meanwhile, the rest of the band will visit the beautiful Maggie’s building for a day of performances and participatory activities with the Maggie’s Dundee team and the huge range of people who use the centre. Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer, their family and friends. The warm and welcoming centres are used by people at all stages of the experience, and from all walks of life.

Focusing on Baroque music (with a few unusual repertoire surprises, in typical SE style...), we’ll offer practical support and advice on playing in a small ensemble. The day ends with two public performances for family, friends - and unsuspecting passers-by!

Quarriers offer support and opportunities to people of all ages who face a range of challenges in their day-to-day lives. We’re delighted to be spending a day at one of their centres in Moray, performing and making music with some of the people who use the centre or find support through Quarriers.

MON 20 MAR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DALNEIGH PRIMARY SCHOOL Dalneigh Primary will be bursting at the seams with music as we spend a full day working with pupils and teachers, exploring what it’s like to work as a musical team and introducing pupils to different musical styles and sounds. The day ends with a performance for friends and family intended to encourage and inspire!

INSPIRING, TEACHING, GUIDING, SHARING.Inspiration is essential. It can be the difference between a young pupil giving up for life - or choosing to push through the hard bits and be blessed with enjoying a lifelong hobby or career.

This is why we are committed to bringing inspirational musicians directly to students from primary school to university age. Through a series of individually-tailored workshops and projects, we can give young musicians more confidence, develop vital musical skills such as working in teams and leading others, and encourage creativity. We always have at least one bespoke creative learning project on the go; on the opposite page, you can read more about the ones we’re planning to deliver across 2016 and 2017.

Using an interactive app and live performance to create a more memorable and distinctive learning experience, Listen Live! is a new workshop for secondary school pupils, exploring musical concepts from the Higher Music curriculum.

This composition workshop for secondary school pupils uses Shostakovich’s String Quartet No.8, a fascinating piece built upon four haunting notes which spell out the composer’s initials, as inspiration for the students’ own compositions, ending with SE musicians performing the pupils’ works.

Two promising musicians at conservatoire level are selected to accompany SE on tour, providing invaluable practical experience and guidance as to the life of a touring musician.

A key part of this scheme is RCS Week, when we spend an intensive five days preparing string players studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for a public concert. With students auditioning to take part, RCS Week gives students an insight into every element of being a professional musician in a smaller ensemble, from the audition process to the challenges of playing without a conductor to practical experience of playing in a high quality group.

This year’s RCS Week concert takes place on Fri 14 Oct and features Bartók’s Divertimento for Strings and Webern’s Five Movements - see p21 for details.

how to bookWe do everything we can to make booking for a Scottish Ensemble concert as simple and fuss-free as possible. For the vast majority of our events, we offer one set price across all seats in the venue - so the only thing you need to decide is which concert to go to.

WHERE DO I BOOK?

Tickets for each event are sold from the Box Office at the concert venue. If the venue doesn’t have a Box Office, go to p32-33 for details on how to book for that concert.

DO YOU OFFER CONCESSIONS?

Yes - students and unwaged people can attend any concert for just £5, and we offer free tickets for Under 16s (with a paying adult) and carers.

CAN I BUY A SEASON TICKET?
