Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs and a firm commitment to social activism . In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices . Violinist Caroline Goulding has performed as a soloist with many of the world’s premier orchestras, including The Cleveland Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of St . Luke’s . She has appeared in recital at many of the world’s finest halls and is the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant . She received a Grammy nomination for her debut album and has appeared on NBC’s Today, MARTHA hosted by Martha Stewart, and can be heard on NPR’s Performance Today and SiriusXM Satellite Radio .

Goulding will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op . 64 at the Lied Center with the University of Kansas Symphony Orchestra (KUSO), and the orchestra will also present selections from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. KUSO is the premier orchestral organization in the KU School of Music .

The special guest conductor for the evening is Jung-Ho Pak . The New York Times says he “radiates enthusiasm,” and the Los Angeles Times describes him as “a real grabber .” And that suits Pak just fine because he firmly believes the orchestra doesn’t exist to simply play notes but to “grab souls .”

As a passionate advocate for arts in education, he is dedicated to making classical music more accessible to the younger generation . Pak currently leads the Cape Symphony and the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen Center for the Arts . He is also music director emeritus of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra .

The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators . They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions, as they helped to define those traditions in the 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st century . Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has persevered through seven decades . The African-American singers—who started out touring during a time of whites-only bathrooms, restaurants and hotels—went on to win five Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, have been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and performed at the White House for three different presidents .

Perhaps best known as the comedian who puts the cerebral in cerebral palsy, Josh Blue centers much of his self-deprecating act around his disability . He exploded onto the national comedy scene by capturing the attention and endearment of the country as the winner of NBC’s Last Comic Standing . Having already established himself as one of the most sought-after comedians on the college circuit, his weekly appearances on Last Comic Standing expanded his fan base exponentially . Blue starred in Comedy Central Presents: Josh Blue, which received rave reviews from fans and critics alike . Most recently, he debuted a one-hour Showtime special, Sticky Change, where he cracks jokes and tells stories about everything from being a white African-American to dealing with cabbies who think he’ll pay in sticky change . The special is currently available on Netflix . He has appeared twice on Ron White’s Comedy Salute to the Troops on CMT and was the first comedian to perform stand-up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show .

The Capitol StepsIf you’ve ever wanted to see Barack Obama sing a show tune, Nancy Pelosi sing a rock song, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie do a classical ballet, this might just be the show for you!

The Capitol Steps—a Washington, DC-based comedy troupe that began as a group of Senate staffers— has been providing a unique blend of musical and political comedy for over thirty years . At the Lied Center, the group will present a show based on the current presidential campaigns as well as songs from their most recent album What to Expect When You’re Electing . Their tasteful lampooning is guaranteed to leave both sides of the political spectrum laughing . The constantly changing show is strenuously bi-partisan and includes songs about everything in the news, such as How Do You Solve a Problem Like Crimea, Ain’t No Pipeline, Now It’s Gone, and The iMpossible iWatch .

Ira Glass is the host and creator of the public radio program This American Life . The show is heard each week by over 2 .2 million listeners on more than 500 public radio stations, with another 2 .2 million podcast downloads . For years, the podcast of This American Life was the most popular one on iTunes, until the show started its first spin-off program Serial, which quickly became the most popular podcast ever created .

Glass began his career as an intern at National Public Radio’s (NPR) network headquarters in Washington, DC in 1978 . Over the years, he worked on nearly every NPR network news program and held virtually every production job at its headquarters . Joey Tartell has toured and recorded with Maynard Ferguson, the Woody Herman Orchestra and the U .S . Army’s Jazz Ambassadors . He has also performed with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra and the Glenn Miller Orchestra .

Red Kite, Brown BoxRed Kite, Brown Box is a joyful experience designed specifically for children on the autism spectrum and their families . Developed by Chicago Children’s Theater, participants will first meet Papa Nick, a loving father who has just moved his family into their new home . Trouble is, Papa Nick’s kids are having a hard time going to sleep, because they would rather explore and find treasures in the empty moving boxes still strewn around the house . A series of sensory events follows, each bracketed by Papa Nick trying to get the children to sleep, all created with textures, sound and lights, including a pillow fight, a dance party, playing with flashlights in a tent, and a car wash .

In order to create a greater sense of ease and engagement, a specially made social story will be made available for sharing prior to the children arriving for the performance . A visual itinerary is also used throughout the adventure to keep children feeling informed and secure, to help alleviate stress and anxiety related to having a new experience .

Presenting the 50-member Russian National Ballet Theatre in the full-length ballet Swan Lake . This classic production debuted in 1877 and is often called the “national ballet of Russia .” It tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse .

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom . The principal dancers of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia .

Making dance performances for ages 6 and up, Arch 8 views theatrical traditions as a resource, using them to create new forms, then sharing these new forms in public, architectural and theatrical spaces .

For many years, choreographer Erik Kaiel has been making dances in subway stations, sculpture gardens, empty swimming pools, city streets and occasionally on stage . In 2003, after a decade in New York City, he moved to the Netherlands . He performs, choreographs and teaches throughout the Netherlands, Europe and the world . Kaiel is the artistic director of Crosstown Den Haag, a choreographic fellow at Danslab and a faculty member at the Artez Dance Academy in Arnhem . In 2010, he won the Dutch national prize for choreographic talent and the No Ballet Competition in Germany .

In a career that spans film, television and stage, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor and songstress Kristin Chenoweth is perhaps best well known for her work on the ABC series Pushing Daisies, FOX’s hit comedy Glee and NBC’s political drama The West Wing . However, fans of Broadway know the “popular” Hollywood Walk of Fame performer as smash-hit Wicked’s original Glinda the Good Witch . More than North America’s premier wind quintet, Imani Winds has established itself as one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the U .S . Since 1997, the Grammy-nominated quintet has taken a unique path, carving out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, adventurous collaborations and inspirational outreach programs .

The group continues its Legacy Commissioning Project, in which the ensemble is commissioning, premiering and touring new works written by established and emerging composers of diverse musical backgrounds, including Jason Moran, Stefon Harris, Danilo Perez, Simon Shaheen and Mohammed Fairouz . Zorá QuartetThe Zorá Quartet has received a long list of awards, including First Prize in the 2015 Young Concert Artists International Auditions . This program introduces children, ages three to five, to the performing arts in an accessible and fun environment . Kids are invited to sit on the stage and experience a program especially created for them by a world-class artist .

Rent the Lied Center The Lied Center of Kansas is host to around 100 KU and community rental events each year . This truly unique space is available to rent for meetings, student groups, dinners, luncheons, concerts, music and dance recitals and much more .

In addition to the 2,000-seat auditorium, available spaces include the 2,400 square-foot multi-use Pavilion, Seymour Gallery (upstairs lobby), Kemper Foyer (main lobby) and backstage spaces .

KU Students........We are honored to support the next generation of performing artists and arts lovers .
