Cutting the cost of paddling at FCC

Here are two ways of cutting the cost of your paddling sessions:

PaddlePass: You can buy a monthly Pass for £10 and this entitles you to paddle as often as you like on weekdays when we are open during that month. £10 buys you a month’s Pass.

Upfront Card: Buy 5 sessions up front (£12.50) and get the sixth session free!

Remember the club has a debit/credit card machine to make it easier to pay.

RIVER FROME TRIP

18th June, a SATURDAY trip 9am at the Clubhouse Cost: £3 Organiser: Rich Carter

The River Frome is mostly flat with some weirs. So an easy paddle! The section we choose on the day will depend on water levels and num-bers who turn up. If water levels are low we will move to the River Avon.

Bring a packed lunch in a water-proof box that can fit into a kayak. And the weather on the day will dictate what clothes to wear!

As with all club trips, you can borrow club kit on the morning. We’ll be back to the clubhouse at the end about 3pm.

This is the Zoom Flume on the ’lower’ stretch of the Frome

MINI SLALOM

1st July 6pm at the Clubhouse

THE SECOND EVENT IN OUR 2016 SERIES OF MINISLALOMS

This is a friendly competition, giving you a chance to have a go without the stress of a ranked slalom.

Come at 6.30pm to practise and the race starts at 7pm.

We need help to run this event—to do the timing. If you can spare an evening, please come along and give us a hand.

FRIDAY CANOE POLO

10th June 7pm at the Clubhouse

New this year, we are going to offer a chance for members to come and participate in a fast and furious game of canoe polo on a Friday evening.

Open to all but the ability to wear a spraydeck will be useful!

One more after this one: July 15th .

COACH TRAINING DAY

19th June

9.30 - 4.30pm

At the Clubhouse Organiser: Rich Carter

This is a new thing for us and is pitched at supporting our coaches.

The plan is to have a day where we can share ideas, hear from Jack and Megan about some of the latest coaching tips (they have both just done Level 2 Training) and work together on checking our coaching standards are all as on

We will produce a programme in due course, but the idea is to get on the water rather than sit and chat in the clubhouse.

Coaches: let us know if you want us to cover anything particular (‘how to teach edging', ‘how to teach bow rudders' etc). Alternatively let us know if you would like to lead a short session in the day.

We want this to be useful and we would like everyone to feel welcome. If you are interested in becoming a coach - this day is for you too.

LANGHAM FARM

FRIDAYS

Monthly sessions over the summer 17th June 6.30pm to 8.30pm Cost £2.50 Organised by Rich C This session is for members wanting to use the moving water at Langham Farm to progress their skills. It is not going to be a general fun session so no swimming and no messing about. We need to know in advance if you intend to come and need club kit. Let us know on the Wednesday before so that we can load the trailer. People with own kit can of course just turn up. As usual we will end up with a cup of tea, if Pam remembers the bags this time! The normal procedure at Langham Farm needs to be observed : Please do not stop/park in front of

the farmhouse, if the ground is wet, please park on

the bridge or very close to it where there is stone.

Please leave gates as you find them.

This camping weekend is for youth members. We go to the wonderful Forest of Dean and paddle on the River Wye on two days.

You need to bring A tent (or share one with a friend, single sex tents only) Sleeping bag plus mat Overnight things - pyjamas, washbag,

towel, etc Waterproofs and wellie boots Canoeing things, which you can pick

up from the club on the morning.

We pitch the big club marquee so that we can all eat together and if it is raining we have shelter.

We canoe on Saturday afternoon, a fairly long river trip and end up with some crazy jumping from the big rock! On Sunday we play on the rapids in the morning.

Pam sorts out all the food and everyone

pitches in to get the meals and then do the clearing up afterwards.

We have a campfire on Saturday night and toast marshmallows while we tell ghost stories in the spooky gloom of the forest.

Youth members: please ask at the desk or email [email protected] for more information. A deposit of £10 secures your place on this trip.

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

Calendar: Market Yard Slalom 10th July

Market Yard Slalom, 10th July:

This is the second slalom that Frome Canoe Club organ-ises for British Canoeing, as part of the National Series of ranked events.

Well Ben organises it for us!

It’s a Div 4 event so ideal to newcomers to the sport . More experienced paddlers and/or ranked paddlers can paddle in the Open event.

We need help to run the event and we also want lots of members to race in it.

Terry here at Avoncliff weir

Coming down back-wards, this manoeuvre ends with a final flourish of an upside down landing! An interesting way to tackle t! Jane’s report of the trip is on p10

Slalom continued

Llandysul Div 2/3

Jos (below) , came 14th in Men's div 3 K1 at Llandysul - a really good result con-sidering the water was so hard!

John and Andy, also competing at Llandysul came second in div 2 C2.

Holme Pierrepont Ben came 51st in Men's div 1 K1 at Holme Pierrepont. Ed: Ben said the water was very hard at HPP

with many paddlers getting a 50 (missing a

gate) im their runs, but even so he was disap-

pointed with his result. On the other hand we

are not disappointed Ben, we are truly in awe

- after all Div 1 is no mean feat!

And congratulations to all the paddlers taking

part in the slalom competitions featured here

- It’s good fun isn’t it?

And remember Langham Farm is

4/5th June!

Canoeing and kayaking are “Assumed risk” – “Water contact sports” that may carry attendant risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks, and be responsible for their own action and involvement.

Kate, Mike, Vicky, Jonathan, Andy, Gareth and

Rich: thank you for doing a massive Taster session

for All Hallows School, raising over £500 for the

club.

What’s going on here? Getting ready for a small

show perhaps? No. It’s Sam N doing a massive

wash of club chairs in preparation for the slalom.

Thank you Sam.

Also helping on the set-up day with the washing

and other tasks were Juliet V and Will H.

Terry single handedly set up the kitchen and went

on to sort out the leak in the toilets - thank you

Terry.

And Ben set up the course with help from Peter,

Tom and Dave.

Thank you to everyone who turned up

and helped.
