Yo Wiksas?

I hope everyone is doing well.

The Elder's Program has been off to a very good start this new year. Chelsey and I have started what we

like to call: The good food Program for the Elders. Last week we started everyone off with some honey.

Honey is a great alternative for sugar.

Elder's Day every Wednesday at 12pm has been a hit. We have been getting 15+ elders show up. That's

really awesome! We have also had some staff come a join in and do little announcements or presentations.

Thank you staff.

Last week we showed a documentary called: my big fat diet. It featured first nations people from Namgis.

The Elders enjoyed it as they saw so many familiar faces in there.

We learned that carbs aren't that good for us.

This week we reopened the discussion as to where the elders would like to go this summer. They have a

few different ideas as to what they'd like to do. We will further discuss as a group and brainstorm next

week vacation ideas.

Thursday continues to be Elder's movie night at 6pm. Come put your feet up, enjoy some popcorn while

watching a movie with your friends.

Next Friday the Elders will be doing a hot lunch fundraiser. We will have spaghetti & ceasar salad with a

piece of garlic toast for $5. Drinks and baked goods will also be for sale. If the weather is nice, the elders

could wash your car while you eat. The car wash will be by donation. Interior vacuuming will also be

available.

Please come out and support our Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elder's as they prepare for their trip this

summer.

There is a clam digging trip that is being organized by the health nurse in fort Rupert. I will see if a

bunch of us can go and get the elders more clams. My apologies if we missed you the first time around. It

was not intentional. We had divided it upon everyone we could with what we had.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me or stop by the office.

Nutritional Information/Clean Eating& Next Good Food Bag Day A lot of people think that healthy eating is super expensive. The cost is a little bit more sometimes but you can’t put a price on your health/life! Here is some information on processed foods (not healthy) and non-processed foods(healthy) Processed foods are foods that have been altered from its natural state in some way. Anything processed contains added salt, sugar and fats which makes their shelf life longer and the flavour more appealing. This leads to people eating more than recommended which can also lead to obesity, diabetes or cancer. Examples of processed foods: Canned soups, fruits and vegetables, white refined sugars, margarine, kraft cheese slices, hot dogs, savoury snacks, kraft dinner etc. Non-Processed foods are foods that are found in their natural state that has not been altered at all. The more you eat healthier, the more healthier you will feel! A healthy nutritional diet contributes to healthy weight management, better energy levels, you get the nutrients you need daily and an all around healthy body. “Shop the perimeter” means staying on the outside of the aisles. You should only go down the aisles for a few things. Example of a clean eating list: Protein: Chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, cottage cheese, eggs. Carbs: Sweet potato, brown rice, rolled oats, quinoa, whole grain breads and pastas. Fats: Almonds, coconut oil, avocado, almond butter, peanut butter, olive oil, chia seeds. And of course, fresh fruits and vegetables. Helpful (healthful) tips to keep in mind: -Read labels -Think inside the box -Pay attention to sugars -Portion sizes -Make small changes at home The Good Food Bag consists of a healthy recipe, fresh fruits and vegetables. If you have any recipe suggestions or any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me The next Good Food Bag day is on February 24th 2016 Thank you!
