1:30 pm: Craig Thompson *As author of the groundbreaking graphic novel Blankets and the equally magisterial work Habibi, Craig Thompson is one of our nation’s most lauded cartoonists. In his new book Space Dumplins (Scholastic), he tackles a fresh challenge: creating a tale aimed specifically at young readers. At this visual talk, Thompson will give the audience a tour through his artistic journey, uncovering how he attempts to bring his legendary warmth, humor, and intricate drawing style into a space adventure that can be enjoyed by all ages.

2:30 pm: Susan Cheever * in conversation with Stephanie Curtis

There’s no other way to say it: our nation has a love affair with liquor. Join us as Stephanie Curtis of MPR’s The Thread talks with renowned author Susan Cheever about her new book, Drinking in America: Our Secret History (Twelve). The pair will discuss how alcohol and alcoholism has played a surprising (and sometimes not-so-surprising) role during key events in the history of the United States.

3:30 pm: The Character of a Cop How Writers Portray the Police in Fiction

Matt Burgess (Uncle Janice), Allen Eskens (The Guise of Another), and Sheyna Galyan (Strength to Stand) investigate the netherworld of crime fiction and the complex and quirky detectives they depict, in an attempt to solve the mystery of why we love to read about cops. Moderated by Jeff Kamin, host of the long-running open book club Books & Bars and co-host of the new literary podcast Story North. This event is co-sponsored by the English Department at Macalester College.

Join us as the Star Tribune’s Rohan Preston engages in a deep and timely conversation with writer Jabari Asim, author of the novel Only the Strong (Agate Bolden), a tale of African American communities in the 1970s Midwest. In addition to having written poetry, fiction, and plays, Asim has written several important books on racism and being black in America, has spoken widely (including on The Colbert Report), and is editor of the NAACP’s magazine The Crisis.

Photographer Edward S. Curtis is more relevant than ever. Join us as Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo discusses his new book, Edward S. Curtis: One Hundred Masterworks (Prestel), sharing images of vintage Curtis photographs from his personal collection; Cardozo will also explain the photographic techniques used by Curtis more than 100 years ago, and reflect on our evolving perceptions of Curtis and his work—which he believes was co-created with the active participation of nearly 10,000 Native Americans and has left us with an enduring narrative of authenticity, vision, and what it means to be a human being.

Brian Henry (Static & Snow), Jennifer L. Knox (Days of Shame and Failure), and Rachel Moritz (Borrowed Wave) present new work which touches on a range of concerns tackled by contemporary poetry, including gravitas, humor, translation, sexuality, and more. Moderated by Gary Dop, author of the debut collection Father, Child, Water.

1:30 pm: Rupert Thomson *Straight from the U.K. comes sensational English writer Rupert Thomson, a favorite author of both David Bowie and James Wood, who calls him "one of the strangest and most refreshingly un-English voices in contemporary fiction.” The Twin Cities Book Festival is proud to be the first stop for Thomsen as he launches his tenth novel, Katherine Carlyle (Other Press), in the U.S. Spare, sharp, riveting, and cinematic, this novel has writers from Jonathan Lethem to Philip Pullman gushing about it — find out why!

2:30 pm: Adventures in America: Joe Meno and Nina Revoyr *

In Joe Meno’s new novel Marvel and a Wonder, a grandfather and his biracial grandson search for their stolen horse in 1990s America, but find something about what it means to be a man on the journey. In Nina Revoyr’s new novel Lost Canyon, four Los Angelenos experience danger and adventure while hiking in the Sierra Nevada, and deal with their views of race, class, and culture in the process. Join us for a conversation with two literary authors, both published by indie stalwart Akashic Books, who unabashedly use genre elements and voice political concerns in their fiction.

3:30 pm: Christian Bök *We close the day with the one and only Christian Bök, the Canadian poet extraordinaire widely known for Eunoia, his Oulipo-inspired book with five “chapters” that each use only one vowel, and for his riveting performances of conceptual. Bök will explain and read from the new experiment he’s been undertaking in the fourteen years since publishing Eunoia: the successful insertion of his poetry into the genome of a living bacterium, which then writes its own poem in response, as recounted in The Xenotext: Book 1 (Coach House Books).

Whether from ancient orders, evil rulers, sadistic hunters, or the hands of fate, Young Adult fiction is fraught with peril. Moderated by author Rebecca Hahn (The Shadow Behind the Stars), authors Tom Isbell (The Prey), E.K. Johnston (A Thousand Nights), and Julie Kagawa (Rogue) will discuss the world-building, character development, and storytelling involved in creating these thrilling tales.

Red Balloon Bookshop invites you to the Twin Cities Book Festival’s second annual Teen Author Party! Make your own book swag, hang out with other readers, play YA Author Bingo, and meet all of the day’s YA authors as they sign your books and pose for photos. Swag bags available for the first 50 teens. Help us close out the Festival with this epic finale!
