As it’s been for nearlytwenty years WOBMChristmas Classic weekbegan on December 15th witha Tipoff Brunch hosted bythe Clarion Hotel &Conference Center in TomsRiver. More than 270players, coaches, officialsand special guests gatheredinside the main ballroom forwhat has become one of thehighlights of the tournament. Hungry student-athletes madereturn trips to the buffet line which featured a deliciousbreakfast cooked-up and served by the Clarion’s award-winning staff. The Clarion has been a gracious supporter ofthe WOBM Christmas Classic by sponsoring and hosting theopening event which allows players to come together beforethey step on the court at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River tobattle for the prestigious title which concludes with the twochampionship games on Wednesday, December 30th.As he usually does founder/director Kevin Williams talked about the growth of

what’s become one of the premier holiday tournaments in all of New Jersey. From8 boys teams playing over three days at Ocean County College to what is now a32-team event (16 boys, 16 girls) that takes 7 days and 52 games the presentWOBM Christmas Classic does not even resemble the early years. Established byWilliams with an assist from then-Southern coach Jim Ruhnke the tournamentreplaced the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and has become a must-see forbasketball fans over the holiday break.

Two new teams have joined the field thisyear with the boy’s team from Wall backafter a short hiatus to replace Brick whileSayreville War Memorial fills the girls spotvacated by Shore. Also introduced at thebreakfast were new head coaches JasonBloom (Brick Memorial) and Nick Georgiou(Middletown South).

Among those to take the podium wereToms River Regional SchoolsSuperintendent David Healey whowelcomed the teams to the Pine Belt Arena

for the tournament. Dr. VinayChopra and Dr. Paul Haynes fromSeaview Orthopaedic & MedicalAssociates wished everyone ahealthy tournament and imploredathletes to let someone know ifthey suffer any kind of injury. Theyare the official team doctors for the WOBM Christmas Classic and will work with anoutstanding group of athletic trainers headed up by Deb Morante and Stacy White.

On hand was Joe Stroffolino, Directorof Advertising & Marketing for theCauseway Family of Dealerships, anoriginal sponsor who has supported thetournament since 1984. Owned andoperated by David C. Wintrode and hisson David G. Wintrode the CausewayFamily (Ford, Honda, Nissan, Lincoln) isknown for their charitable support andthis year has taken an expanded role inthe WOBM CC by providing tee shirts forall the players and coaches while alsosponsoring the $10,000 half court shotpromotion. In addition for the 32nd year they will award the Boys Most ValuablePlayer Award at the conclusion of the tournament.

Clearly one of the highlights ofthe Tipoff Brunch was theappearance of Alex Blackwell,one of the most celebratedplayers to ever come out of theshore area. Blackwell was aWOBM All-Tournament player asa sophomore and junior at TomsRiver North and would go on toset numerous records atMonmouth University. Followinga short stint with the LosAngeles Lakers he would play17 seasons of pro basketballoverseas finishing up in Chilewhere he now coachesbasketball. The 45-year oldreturned home for a visit with hiswife and daughter in large partbecause of his induction into theMonmouth University AthleticHall of Fame. Blackwell spokethe players about listening totheir coaches and parents and said he doubted his ability as a teen-ager beforerealizing that basketball would be a large part of his future.

Williams announced this year’s recipients of the academic scholarship awardsmade possibly by Barnabas Health, who once again serves as presenting sponsorof the tournament. The awards are based on the academic performance of boysand girls who played in the 2014 WOBM CC and are now college freshman. Theywill receive their awards at halftime of the championship games on December 30th.

Welcome to the 32nd annual WOBM Christmas Classic, hosted byTownsquare Media, the Shore Sports Network, WOBM FM/AM and theToms River Regional School District. Once again 32 varsity basketballteams (16 boys/16 girls) will be participating and playing 52 games over sevendays in the Pine Belt Arena. The tournament was established in 1984 as areplacement for the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and began with eightboys teams playing over three days at Ocean County College. It has grown intoone of the largest holiday basketball tournaments in New Jersey and hasfeatured 32 teams since moving to the Pine Belt Arena in 2003. Special thanksto the Toms River School District and Board of Education for hosting the eventand providing such an outstanding facility for the participants.

The WOBM Christmas Classic lost one of its most familiarfaces this year with the sudden passing of Robert “CZ”Czarniewski in May. Bob was the clock/scoreboard operator from theinaugural tournament in 1984 and worked every game played at Ocean CountyCollege and later inside the Pine Belt Arena. He never missed a game and was atremendous asset, so much so that in 2000 we presented him with the “Jim RuhnkeAward” for his contributions to the tournament.

“CZ” spent more than 40 years teaching physical education at the Island HeightsGrade School and in 2013 they dedicated the school gymnasium in his name. He notonly loved that school but basketball and soccer as well and was a longtime soccercoach in Toms River.

While all of us associated with the WOBM Christmas Classic will miss him he willremain a part through a newly-created memorial award which will be presentedannually to a female player who displays sportsmanship, dedication, determinationand teamwork. The award will be sponsored by Dan & Kathy Czarniewski.
