Entering his second full season as head coach, Stanicic was elevated from interim head coach on Dec. 20, 2013. An 11-year veteran of the Navy Water Polo program, he has filled roles as a volunteer, assistant and associate head coach for the Midshipmen since 1988. In his first season as the head coach of the program, Stanicic led the Mids to a 19-12 record and nine wins over the final 11 matches of 2014. Spearheaded by Honorable Mention All-American Thomas Patterson, Stanicic and the Mids finished in third place in both the CWPA Southern and CWPA Championship tournaments. With 19 victories, Navy continued its streak of at least 19 wins in every year of the program’s 33 of existence. After serving for eight seasons as an associate and assistant coach under Mike Schofield, Navy’s all-time winningest coach, Stanicic was named the interim head coach on Sept. 26, 2013 after Schofield retired. He turned the Mids season around and led the team to an 11-6 record and its 14th CWPA Southern Championship in program history. In recognition of the program’s success Stanicic was named the 2013 CWPA Southern Division Coach of the Year. Honorable Mention All-America nods to Carl Dowzicky and Carpenter Warren rounded off the 2013 year for Stanicic and the Mids. During the 2012 season, Stanicic helped guide the Midshipmen to a 23-6 record and a CWPA Southern Division regular-season championship. The Midshipmen bolted out to a 20-2 record in 2012, one of its best starts in school history, and scored a whopping 467 goals, an average of 16.1 goals per game. In 2011, Navy recorded a 24-7 record and reached the CWPA Eastern Championship game for the league-record seventh straight time. Stanicic helped the team to a 25-7 record four years ago and the CWPA Southern Division title and an appearance in the CWPA Eastern title game for the sixth straight year during the 2010 season. Five years ago, Stanicic assisted the team to a 22-9 record and the CWPA regular-season co- championship and tournament title. Stanicic served as an interim coach for eight games during the 2007 season, leading the Mids to a 7-1 mark during those games, while starting the team off on its school record 19-game winning streak. He also filled in for a pair of wins in the 2011 season against Connecticut College and Harvard, while head coach Mike Schofield was in California with another Navy squad. In 2013, split-squad action saw Stanicic lead the Mids at the Princeton Invitational for three games. The three head coaching stints gave Stanicic a 9-3 coaching record. After immigrating to the United States, he briefly volunteered as a coach for the Fordham University men’s water polo team. After relocating to Annapolis, Stanicic joined the Naval Academy Aquatics Club as a coach. He also volunteered with the men’s varsity team as an assistant coach, particularly in 1988, helping the Mids to win the Eastern Championship and participate at the NCAA Tournament. He continued in his role as volunteer coach with varying degrees of engagement. Since 1988, coaching the Navy

goalkeepers has been his specialty, producing a number of All-East and All-American selectees. Throughout the years following 1988, Stanicic continued to work with the Naval Academy Aquatic Club and led both men’s and women’s teams to 14 national championships including the Women’s Open in 1999 and multiple-age group titles in 20 and under, 18 and under, 16 and under and 14 and under competitions. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Split at Zadar, Croatia, in 1981. Mladen and his wife, Miriam, are the parents of Maro (35) and Blaise (28). Miriam serves as the USNA Director of Community Relations. Both Miriam and Mladen are also high-level interpreters and translators with the U.S. Government. Their assignments have included interpreting for U.S. and foreign Heads of State, Secretaries of State, Secretaries of Defense and Chiefs of Defense, while their translating work included international treaties. Maro is a former Naval Academy Aquatic Club swimmer and water polo player while Blaise was a standout at the University of Maryland, receiving a pair of All-American honors by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, becoming the first all-American in the history of the Maryland water polo program. Upon graduating, she played professionally overseas for WPC Mladost, Zagreb, Croatia to win the 2010 National Championship and, she played for the Croatian National Team, competing at the 2010 European Championship Games. Upon her return to the US, she also served as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at George Washington University and currently at Navy.

Mark Lawrence, a former head coach at MIT and assistant at Brown University, joined the Navy water polo coaching staff in February of 2014. In his first season as an assistant coach of the program, Lawrence played an integral role in helping the Mids to a 19-12 record and nine wins over the final 11 matches of 2014. Led by Honorable Mention All-American Thomas Patterson, Lawrence and the Mids finished in third place in both the CWPA Southern and CWPA Championship tournaments. With 19 victories, Navy continued its streak of at least 19 wins in every year of the program’s 33 of existence. No stranger to the Collegiate Water Polo Association, Lawrence comes to Navy with three years of CWPA experience under his belt at Brown and MIT. A member of both the men’s and women’s coaching staffs at Brown University in 2013, he worked with the teams in creating training sessions and managing the travel, budgeting and schedules. Lawrence also served as Brown’s recruiting coordinator and oversaw the planning of home competitions and tournaments. In 2013, Lawrence and the Brown’s men’s team had two players, Henry Fox and James McNamara, named to the CWPA Northern Division First Team. On the women’s side, Brown was recognized twice on the CWPA All-Division First Team as Kate Woods and Madison Pepper were honored. Prior to joining the Bears, Lawrence was the head coach at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for two seasons in 2011 and 2012. Under his leadership, the Engineers won 21 games, including four in CWPA postseason contests. In his final season at MIT in 2012, Lawrence helped freshman Kale Rogers set the school scoring record with 77 goals scored. In recognition of this mark, Rogers was chosen as the CWPA Northern Division Rookie of the Year. Overall, five MIT athletes were named to All-Division teams while Lawrence headed the program. His first collegiate coaching opportunity occurred at Arizona State where he was a graduate assistant for the women’s team during the 2009 season. Experienced in international competition as well, Lawrence was an assistant head coach for the Kazakhstan Women’s National Team in 2011. He assisted in the re-development of the national team and coached the squad at the 2011 Fina World Championships in Shanghai, China. Since Jan. 2013, he has been a coach with the United States Water Polo Association in the Olympic Development Program. Lawrence’s club and high school coaching experience includes time with Washington High School and the Ohlone College Youth Water Polo Club, both in Fremont, Calif. As a player, Lawrence was a letterwinner at Queens College where he played on the school’s 2002 NCAA Final Four team. He continued his playing career as a member of the Brisbane Breakers Water Polo Club in Brisbane, Australia during its 2005 season. Along with playing, Lawrence taught water polo to high school and middle school athletes throughout the Brisbane area. Lawrence graduated from San Francisco State University in 2005 with a B.A. in English Literature.

Blaise StanicicVolunteer Assistant CoachAlma Mater: Maryland (2009)Years at Navy: Third

A standout student-athlete at the University of Maryland, Stanicic received a pair of All-American honors in 2008 and 2009 by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches. Those honors made her the first all-American in the history of the Maryland water polo program. Stanicic totaled 139 goals and 116 assists during her four-year career as a Terrapin. Upon graduating, Stanicic played professionally overseas for the Croatian club, WPC Mladost (Zagreb) and played a leading role in her team winning the 2010 National Championship. The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiat-ing assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

Who We Are? The Collegiate Water Polo Association is a non-profit athletic conference comprised of four-year colleges and universities. Unlike other conferences, the CWPA is comprised of both varsity and collegiate club programs which compete for an National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Collegiate Club (NCCC) Championship. A member conference of the NCAA, the purpose of the Association is to serve its membership through a variety of ways, including the coordination of a competitive schedule. As a non-profit 501 (c)-3 organization, it is also a charitable entity, capable of receiving donations that are tax deductible. All gifts of this kind may be sent to the office, with an acknowledgment returned to you for your tax records.
