He returns in hopes of leading the Wildcats to a first-place fin- ish in the Big Eight Conference. Though the Wildcats expect to be much stronger in the throwing events this season, they enter the season without the same sprint depth they had last year. “We will need to stay healthy to have a chance at the Big 8 championship this year,” VAHS head coach Joff Pedretti said. The Wildcats won the Verona regional and Janesville Parker sectional, but finished runner-up in the Big Eight to Middleton. Senior Noah Roberts should once again be solid in the throws at the conference level, while Jack Herkert (high jump), Jacob Auman (triple jump), and Cam- eron Tindall (sprints) will likely round out our top performers this season. Verona returns three quarters of its 4x200 relay in senior Josh Beckam, Auman and Cameron, which took 17th place at state. The team’s top field event fin- isher, Steven Queoff finished 19th in the high jump competi- tion. The Cardinals, who finished fifth at last year’s state meet, are once again the favorite to win the Big Eight. If the Cardinals win the title, it would be the first three-peat since Verona joined the Big 8 in 2009. Last year Mid- dleton finished 59 points ahead of the second-place Wildcats last year. “I don’t think they will com- pletely dominate like that again, but their returners they are cer- tainly the front-runners again,” Pedretti said. Beside Verona and Middleton, Janesville Craig is expected to round out the top-tier in confer- ence with solid returners. Verona Area High Schoolgirls track and field team lost15 letterwinners from a yearago, but remain optimisticwith 25 returning.

Despite finishing fifthoverall in the Big Eight Con-ference a year ago, Veronacould be more than capableof moving up a couple spots.The top two spots are prob-ably out of reach, however.

“We hope to be competi-tive in the extremely talentedBig 8 conference,” MarkHappel said. “We havedecent depth in the sprintsand some talented returning

 jumpers, vaul ters and hur-dlers.”

Verona returns half of itsstate-qualifying 4x200 and4x400 relays. SophomoreKristi Larsen was on bothrelays, while junior KylieSchmaltz joined her and

Jenni LaCroix and LexyRichardson to take 19thin the 4x200. SeniorHannah Miller, LaCroixand Richardson teamedup with Larsen to finish21st as a 4x400 team.

Lexy Richardson, whofinished 19th in the high

 jump, graduated followinglast season, leaving sopho-more Kailey Olson to takeover as the girl’s top high

 jumper.

Olson has looked solidto state the season, winningthe Nelson-Daniel Classicafter finishing second to thedefending state champion atthe W/TFA – both indoors atUW-Whitewater.

Also leaving a void in thefield events is Nikky Zim-brick, who graduated afterqualifying for state in thepole vault.

“As always we are goingto expect our senior captainsand returning state qualifiers

to lead the team at practice

and in meets,” Happel said.Middleton and Sun Prai-

rie continue to reload with atremendous amount of talentand depth.

“Middleton, Sun Prairieand Madison Memorial areall loaded with talent anddepth,” Happel said.

Middleton finished in aninth-place tie with Bay Portat state last season, while SunPrairie took 12th.

Middleton returns all ofits fifth place 4x100 relay inOlivia Robers, Hanna Docter,Rachel Zander and LaurenSmith. Senior Bobbi Patrickand Docter return on the

4x400 as well which finishedrunner-up with returningteammates Hanne Anderson-Smith and Emily Zeker.

Senior Rachel Wians,Samantha Valentine and Pat-rick added a second-placefinish on the 4x800 as well,but graduated Delaney Fos-ter.

Patrick also finished ninthin the 800, while Sun Prai-rie junior Katie Hietpas tookseventh in the 3,200 and 11thin the mile.

Sun Prairie returns the onlydefending state champion inthe Big Eight in senior high

 ju mper Tier ney Lind ne r(5-6).

Madison Memorial juniorHolly Houston returns asthe Big Eight’s top discusthrower after finishing ninthat state.

Beloit Memorial figuresto be the team to beat in thesprints, especially after its4x200 finished eighth over-all at state last year with theall-underclassmen quarter ofShynia Summerville, GraceRoegner, Yolonda Johnsonand Elliott Jaliyah.

Elliott also figures to beone of the conference’s topsprinters this season after fin-ishing in seventh place in thestate in the 100-meter dash.

Junior midfielder EmilyKrogman, who was a first-team selection in the BigEight in 2014, leads theway.

Krogman scored ninegoals and collected fourassists in 2014, second tograduate Felicia Retrum (11goals, 4 assists) for team points.

Senior forward Ari Makuch (1G,2A), junior forward Ellery Rourke (4G,7A), junior forward Bobo Zaugg, juniorforward/midfielder Shelly Wing (1G)and sophomore forward/midfielder KateMelin (5G, 3A) are also back to help theoffense.

After just missing mak-ing sectionals as a teamlast season, the VeronaArea High School boysgolf team returns four withthe hopes of not only mak-ing sectionals but to alsoget back to the top of theBig Eight Conference.

Seniors Joey McCormickand Austin Lois, juniorNick Meland and sopho-more Will Zunker are backin 2015.

“(They) give us somedepth with experience,”head coach Jon Rebholzwrote in a preview ques-

tionnaire. “All four aver-aged in the mid 80s lastyear and will hopefully cuta few strokes off that forthis year.

“They wil l be thrus tinto more of a leadershiprole this year, so how theyhandle that will dictatehow successful we are thisyear.”

McCorm ick , Me landand Zunker all played atregionals for varsity in2014, along with graduatesJohn Tackett and RileySchmitz.

The Wildcats made athree-team playoff with a

chance to make sectionalsbut lost by one stroke toWaunakee.

This season, Lois ismoved up to varsity withthe No. 5 golfer slated tobe freshman Garhett Kaegiin Monday’s Stoughtoninvite.

The regional is Tuesday,May 26, or Wednesday,May 27, at Pleasant ViewGolf Course . The sec-tional is Tuesday, June 2,or Wednesday, June 3, atReedsburg Country Club.

Conference previewVerona finished third in

the Big Eight last season,after winning the first boysgolf conference title inschool history in 2013.

The Wildcats were able

to jump the middle of thepack into the top three in2014, but a conference titlewas a loftier goal than theyear before.

Rebholz said the Wild-cats have more potentialto challenge for the BigEight crown this season.

“The key for us willbe to remain confidentand consistent, and playsmart and eff ic ientgolf,” Rebholz said.“There has been somededicated work in theoff-season by someof our guys. That willhelp as we go throughone of the strongerconferences, region-als and sectionals inthe state.”

Middleton isthe favorite towin the BigE igh t wi ththree juniorsback from last

season’s Big Eight andsectional champions.

Em m et Herb , BradyThomas and Joey Levin areall back.

Thomas finished 28that state with a 155, whileLevin finished tied for 44thwith a 159. Herb finishedtied for 77th with a 167.

“They have thebest mix of talent,depth, and expe-rience,” Rebholzsaid.

Madison Memo-rial, Janesville Parker

and Beloit Memorialare all in the mix for

the top two in the con-ference with Verona,Rebholz said.

Madison Memoria lgets three of five golf-ers back from last year’ssectional team – JuniorsJacob O’Laughlin, JackAndringa and Jake Rath.

Beloit also has three offour back from its 2014sectional team – seniorJohn West, junior JackEldred and sophomoreSam Klobucar.

Parker only gets onegolfer back from last sea-son’s team – senior sec-tional qualifier John Mil-ner.

Other top individuals inthe conference are seniorPeter Conowall and juniorNils Arneson of MadisonEast and senior Nate Oeh-rlein of Sun Prairie.

After two years as theVerona Area High Schoolboy’s tennis No. 2 singlesplayer, junior Alex Plettatakes over atop the lineupfor Phillip Rudnitzky.

The Panthers beat theRegents by three points toreach their first state teamtournament las t year ,while Verona finishedtied for seventh.

It was the first timein over 14 years that theWildcats failed to qualify

anyone for the individualstate tournament.

“I feel like we have amore mature team thisyear with the addition ofthree new players whichwill bolster our depth,”VAHS head coach RickEngen said.

Behind Pletta in thelineup is a pair two-timeletterwinner in junior Pat-rick Conley (No. 2 sin-gles) and Jonah Gerrits (3singles).

The Big Eight Confer-ence meet is May 19-20while sectionals is slatedfor May 27. Both meetstake place at UW-Madi-son’s Nielsen Tennis Sta-dium.

the team in batting average (.519),hits (43), home runs (3) averageand tied Kealy for the team leadin RBIs with 30.

Though not new to the team, junior Alyssa Erdman takes overfor Ray this season as Verona’snew starting pitcher.

Erdman and freshman EmmaKleinsek will share pitchingduties (Verona had a third pitcherQuin Nelson that also saw someinnings during the team’s SpringBreak trip to Florida).

Savanna Rainey should find astarting role on the team, bringing

her speed and strong hitting tobear in the line-up.

Other senior newcomers, SaraEndres, Allison Armstrong andCarrie Snodgrass will also be inthe mix.

Having said all of that, Keyes,who hit .366 with a .461 on-basepercentage and a .521 sluggingpercentage to go along with eightdoubles, a home run and 15 RBIs,will lead the team.

“We expect a great offensiveseason and defensive play (atshort) from Kori,” Anderson said.

A year ago Verona was near-ly unbeatable in the Big Eight

Conference, posting an impres-sive 17-1 record.

With the addition of freshmennewcomers and strong hittingfrom returning starters and return-ing players battling for a startingrole, Verona looks to competewith anyone and repeat as confer-ence champs.

Besides his Wildcats, Andersonsaid he also sees Middleton andJanesville Craig competing fortop positions.

Middleton finished last season13-5 in conference, taking third

place, while Craig went 8-10 insixth.

Craig has started the season2-0, while Middleton and theWildcats are each 1-0.

Madison La Follette (14-4)finished runner-up last season,but the graduation of ace NicoleNewman the Lancers figure todrop back a bit this season.

The Wildcats hosts Cardinalson April 17 and then again April13 at Firefighter’s Park in Mid-dleton. Both games are slated for5 p.m. starts. Verona then playsthe Cougars in a doubleheaderMay 5 at Janesville Youth Sports

Knueppel also helped theoffense, batting .333 with 12RBIs.

Toman was 1-3 with a 2.70ERA in 23 1/3 innings pitched.He had 11 strikeouts.

Rortvedt, who is a Division Irecruit at the University of Arkan-sas, also led the offense with a.338 average, 13 RBIs, a homerun and seven doubles.

Seniors Brodie Roehrig (firstbase) and David Rogowski (short-stop) and junior Jason Frahm(third base) are also back.

Roehrig collected seven RBIslast season, while Rogowski hadseven stolen bases.
