Nature Discovery and Natural History

Story Time on the Reservoir

Join a Naturalist for story time overlooking the reservoir. Each week we will read a new, nature themed, book aimed toward preschoolers. At the end of the story we will get to see and touch some real (but not alive) examples of things we heard about in the book. Class will meet at the end of the parking lot at the Ravens Rest. In case of rain, class will meet in the nature center.

14th Annual Kids' Fishing Derby

Children ages 4-14 can fish license-free out at Eagle Creek Park's Coffer Dam, courtesy of the Eagle Creek Park Foundation. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and pre-registration is required. Register by Thursday, June 4 online at EagleCreekPark.org, or register at the park office (7840 W. 56th St, M-F 9am-5pm). For more information, call the Foundation at 317-327-7116. Young anglers can enjoy fishing among the great outdoors along with a cookout, door prizes, goody bags, and the Pacers Fan Van. Bait is provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment. A limited number of fishing poles will be available to borrow.

Peaceful Living for Kids Workshop

Offered by the Peace Learning Center: register at peacelearningcenter.org/summerfun Please note, additional gate entry fee ($5/$6 vehicle) applies. This is a series of workshops for youth who are interested in learning ways to feel peaceful (guided meditation and mindfulness), how to get along well with others (conflict resolution and communication), how to help others (taking a stand against bullying and making the world a better place), and Peace through Children's Literature and Art (activities based around relevant book and a chance for creativity). We will also play group games, and do creative projects. Each workshop is different.

Decomposers

What's underneath that rotting log, and how does it keep our forest healthy? Join this class to get an up-close look at some of the squirmy-wormy critters that we call decomposers. Participants will join in an indoor session where they can create a decomposer habitat and be given a decomposer to take home. Families can also join in a short hike around the Earth Discovery Center to find these creepy crawlies in our forest. Pre-registration required

Perseid Meteor Shower

Come check out the annual Perseid Meteor Shower at the soccer fields by Eagle's Crest, on the west side of Eagle Creek Reservoir (7201 Fishback Rd.). Free! Program may be rescheduled or cancelled due to weather, including heavy cloud cover; call 327-7148 (before 5pm) or go to the Eagle Creek Park Facebook page for the latest updates. A new moon this year means dark skies and (hopefully) great viewing conditions! Bring a blanket or lawn chair, bug spray, and anything else you want to stay comfortable while gazing at the night sky.

Friday Night FROGWATCH

Learn about frogs and frog calls, and visit a pond to search for the frogs themselves! Bring bright flashlights, wear old shoes/boots, and a rain jacket if raining. Adults and all children age 3 and up must be registered. We will be around water at night, so be sure to register enough adults to supervise any children attending. Program meets at the Earth Discovery Center for a 20-30 minute introduction and then we will drive to the frog pond to look for frogs.

Eagle Creek Park is not normally open to camping, but for this one special night you can sign up to bring your kids, bring your own tent and sleeping bags and join us for a real camp out in the park. We'll have a campfire, fun hikes, programs and other activities in the evening. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy the wonderful sights and sounds of Eagle Creek Park at night!

Fishing 101

Hook, line, and sinker! Join a naturalist to learn the basics of fishing. Learn to tie a fishing knot, handle your catch, and what a fisherperson can to do protect fish as a natural resource. This will be a hands-on outdoor session. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and bring a grown up to lend a helping hand. Fishing gear and bait will be provided. If you are attending the program as a participant, not just a helper, and are over 17, be sure to bring your valid Indiana fishing license. Class will meet at Lilly Lake.

Throw and Sow

In this class we will get our hands dirty while creating our very own seed balls. Through the action of mixing clay, water, compost, and seeds we will learn about the importance of native plants, and how these plants are important for our bio-diversity. We will also discuss how to attract and protect our native pollinators. All materials provided. $1 registration includes 2 seed balls, additional seed balls can be purchased for $1 each (cash only please, due to instructor at end of class).

3rd Annual Iron Eagle Paddle and Run

All proceeds from this multi-sport race benefit the Eagle Creek Park Foundation's efforts in raising money for park improvements, youth environmental education programs, and trail maintenance within the park. To register and for more information, log on to www.EagleCreekPark.org, or call 317-327-7116. The adventure race starts at the beach and alternates between a 2.5-mile trail run to the boats, 1.5-mile paddle, and 3.5-mile trail run back to the beach. Competitors can bring their own kayak or canoe, or rent a boat.

Go Ape is a highly interactive 2-3 hour treetop adventure where you'll explore the forest canopy 40-50 feet up in the trees via 5 zip lines, Tarzan swings, trapezes, tunnels, bridges, rope ladders, and other awesome obstacles!

Natural History Book Club

There are countless nature related books that present a variety of pressing environmental concerns. This monthly program offers adults a chance to learn about nature and environmental issues through the words of different nature authors. Indy Parks, in collaboration with Ben Davis Christian Church and Go Love Indy, is proud to announce that 20'X20' plots will be sold for $25 at Krannert Park in our designated community garden areas. Note: No water onsite. All registration must be done in person at Krannnert Park. Garden Plots will be ready for planting the week of April 28th, weather permitting, though it is recommended to hold off on any planting until May 12th.

Volunteers from the Hoosier Canoe Club will encourage you try their boats and teach you basic paddle skills and safety tips. Every first Wednesday of each month, Kids have the opportunity to learn kayaking techniques for FREE. Must register two weeks in advance. Paddlers who catch the bug can get advice about boats and gear, learn how to roll or self-rescue a kayak and join the HCC on paddling trips across Indiana and beyond.
