WELCOME March 31, 2015 Welcome to the State of the Second District 2015. It is my honor to have you here with me at the beautiful, historic and very chic Loft on Pine. The Loft on Pine exemplifies what the Second District is really all about – charm, rich history, and a patchwork of cultures that come together to create a unique beauty only found in this district. My sincerest appreciation to those who contributed to the Second District Report this year. This current compilation of experiences, successful strategies and progress for improving our neighborhoods serves as a testament to the dedication of our residents, businesses and city staff alike. We have representatives in our audience from Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Association (ABNA), AOC7, Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association (BHNA), Carroll Park, Craftsman Village Historic District, Downtown Long Beach Associates (DBLA), Downtown Residential Council (DRC), East Village Association (EVA), Fourth Street Business Association, North Alamitos Beach Association (NABA), On Broadway, Ocean Residents Community Association (ORCA), Promenade Area Residents Association (PARA) and Rose Park Neighborhood Association (RPNA). We also have members of our City family here, as well as, representatives from Burbank Elementary, Franklin Middle School and Mann Elementary. These three schools serve many of the children that live in the Second District. Our special recognition goes to Fix Long Beach this year. It is amazing and humbling what this City-wide, grassroots group has grown into and how invaluable they are to our animal and people population alike. I truly believe that the Second District is reflective of Long Beach and I take pride in what we have done and continue to do in this corner of the City. There is no shortage of leadership or active participation among our associations, which makes this night one of inspiration and aspiration. Our ideas are grand no matter how small, our goals purposeful and our vision for the Second District clear and never bereft of meaning. It is an honor and privilege to represent the Second District and its many passionate stakeholders. I am proud of our work together thus far and very energized by the opportunities that await us. Thank you for giving back to our community. Warmly,

Suja

STEWARDS OF THE SECOND The Second District embodies the diversity, cooperation and optimism of Long Beach. These individuals, businesses and groups have gone beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of others. Such contributions are to be commended and shared with all Long Beach residents. Over the last five years, more than 400 Stewards have been recognized for their contributions. During her first year on the City Council, Vice Mayor Lowenthal was inspired to think of a term or title that aptly captured those individuals and community groups that went beyond the call of duty to improve the quality of life in the Second District, and thus the entire city. She came away with the term, “Stewards of the Second District” – a person or entity that provides ongoing care and guidance. Here is a list of the 2014 recipients...congratulations.

The On Broadway business Association has contin-ued a steady path forward in creating a sense of localized neighborhoods along it’s long stretches from Alamitos Village to Belmont Village. Planning for the future. In 2014 Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal hosted several community meetings for the Broadway corridor. Broadway Visioning - These meeting were to bring ideas to the community and build consensus on how the community sees the future of Broad-way. From infrastructure to aesthetics these meet-ing brought and exciting message for the future on Broadway. Bixby Park - These meetings had a focus on Bixby Park, one of the most beloved parks in Long Beach. The meetings helped share ideas on Bixby Park and and get input from locals on what they would like to see in the park.
