One of Canada’s foremost retail marketing experts shares his views on how fresh potato producers can become store suppliers.

    FROM FIELD TO PRODUCE AISLE

SUPPLYING LARGE RETAILERS with fresh potatoes or any other product is like climbing Mount Everest. Significant work is required up-front, but the possibility of fame and fortune awaits those who are successful. Unfortunately, there are many unsuccessful attempts and even casualties. Those who prepare thoroughly and execute consistently set the stage for success.

It’s imperative to understand that the retailer is your customer. The consumer

Peter Chapman is a retail marketer, speaker and consultant based in Bedford, N.S. With many years of industry experience and an in-depth knowledge of the retail landscape and consumers, Chapman is sought out by producers, processors and retailers who want to grow their sales. Chapman’s new book A la cart: A supplier’s guide to retailers’ priorities was released this past summer.

  • 3BUYER’S GUIDE 2015

    FROM FIELD TO PRODUCE AISLE

buys the potatoes in-store, but it is the retailer who first buys them from you. For this reason, producers need to understand the retailer. For example, it’s important to know that retail market segments have different supply requirements. A discount store needs a different product line of potatoes than a specialty retailer.

A number of requirements in the areas of food safety, purchasing and packaging must be met to supply the larger retailers. It’s important to research these requirements; if you are unsure, ask the retailer. The best place to learn about your prospective customer is in their store. Visit stores to see what they are trying to accomplish, and then you can identify opportunities that will support their position in the market.

Once you have a few ideas for your customer, the next step is to determine how these ideas can be implemented within your own capabilities. Consider any points of differentiation in the category that you can offer — perhaps a new type of packaging or a segment of the category they are missing. In today’s marketplace, potatoes are available in so much more than just 10-pound paper bags.

An important point to remember is that retailers often aren’t willing to entertain one more person who can supply what they’re already getting. It’s critical that you identify and articulate exactly where you can provide a solution or generate more sales or profit for the retailer. It should feel like a good fit between you, the supplier, and your customer, the retailer.

In my book A la cart, I have identified a number of retailer priorities. Potato producers need to understand these priorities and offer products and services to support retailer initiatives.

Key areas include:• Driving sales• Differentiation• Supply chain efficiencies• Food safety• Health and wellness• Global foods• Food solutions• Corporate social responsibility

You will have a much greater chance of getting your product listed if you can support the retailer’s position in one or more of these priority areas.

Weigh the Pros and ConsOne question you need to ask yourself is whether you want to build your own brand or pack the retailer’s private label. In A la cart, I outline a number of pros and cons to packing a private label. There is no right or wrong answer, but you need to be prepared to answer the question and do what is right for your business.

If we think of great sales at the summit of the mountain, getting your product listed is base camp. Using your customer research and your internal capability assessment, you have identified the products that you want to sell. This needs to be done a year in advance in a category like potatoes. Most large retailers will put together their plans eight months to a year in advance to ensure they have supply.

Getting in the door of the product category manager’s office can be one of the biggest challenges. Referrals from a non-competing grower or an introduction at an industry event are most effective. You need to put yourself where the category manager will be. You can develop a relationship with the produce employees at your local store. Some category managers will see a referral from a store as an endorsement. It is very difficult to call and get to see them.

Once you have an appointment scheduled, put together a concise presentation of your business and the products you want to sell. Respect their time — there is nothing more frustrating to a busy manager than a 30-minute meeting that turns into a 60-minute marathon.

Explain your business, why you should be a supplier and take them through the opportunities with samples. Focus on your business and not the poor quality you saw on your store visit. They know their stores; they want to understand why you should be a supplier and what you can do to make their store better.

    Peter Chapman’s Recipe for Success

    • Productive relationships require both parties to understand and respect each other. Ensure your organization understands and respects the priorities and challenges of retailers.

    • Educate retailers on your organization, including the priorities and challenges you face. Do this succinctly and respect their knowledge of the industry.

    • Develop a unique strategy for each retailer.

    • Follow your item through the entire value chain to ensure it delivers the experience to consumers as you had intended.

    • Subscribe to the philosophy that products are sold when they go through the cash register at the store.

    • Food safety should always be top of mind.

    • Stay on top of trends. These opportunities deliver incremental sales, profit and position your items differently in the market.

    • Find opportunities where you can deliver value to retailers beyond sales and profit. You will benefit if you provide expertise and solutions.

    • Understand the competitive environment in which they operate. Let them do their job and remember you are one of many.

    • Respect the systems and processes that allow retailers to operate, but never lose sight of how important relationships are to your business.

    • Retailers have to evolve all the time to maintain their position in the market. Remember, as a supplier you will only get to the summit if you support your customer’s evolution and execute every day.

Success in base camp with listings gives you permission to climb the mountain. Remember that the listing is not success; it just gives you permission to sell the product. You have to continuously work at the relationship. Remember — you are only as good as the last order you shipped.

It’s imperative to understand that the retailer is your customer. The consumer buys the potatoes in-store, but it is the retailer who first buys them from you.

Innovations from Lockwood and Case IH that will benefit potato growers in 2015.

    POTATO CLEANING EQUIPMENT

LOCKWOOD Manufacturing has added the VACS-5 model to its line of potato handling products. The VACS-5 is a complete handling and cleaning system that efficiently removes rocks, dirt, vines and other debris effortlessly. With the aid of high velocity air, growers can now clean and separate loads of potatoes easily while minimizing damage.

Lockwood’s patent pending VACS-8 and VACS-5 air separators are designed with a wide range of features, including:• Complete system includes vacuum chamber, cleaning table,

containment centre and air supply unit• 48-inch potato discharge conveyor• Collection conveyors for both dirt and stones to one discharge point• Containment unit for collection of fine dirt and plant debris • High-efficiency backward inclined fan• 170-horsepower Cummins engine power plant (optional electric

motor drive available)• Hydraulically activated clutch for remote start-up• Central control panel with remote access to air supply unit• Provides a clean and noise-free work environment for employees

The air chamber on the Lockwood air separators first cleans debris by flowing the load over a full-width cleaning table to remove excess dirt and plant debris. What’s left then moves into the high-flow air chamber that efficiently elevates the potatoes into a high stream of air, lifting them onto the discharge conveyer while allowing the stones to continue to flow through.

The cleaning table and vacuum chamber on the VACS-8 are both 60 inches wide, while on the VACS-5, they are 96 inches wide. Both models also have three-PH variable frequency drive motors on all tables and conveyors for maximum efficiency (230-volt motor on VACS-8, 460 volts on VACS-5).Maximum capacity for the VACS-8 is 2,200 hundredweight per hour, while it’s 5,000 hundredweight per hour on the VACS-5.

    NEW TRACKED TRACTOR

IN AUGUST, Case IH unveiled its new Magnum Rowtrac tractor, which pairs an oscillating rear-track system with front tire options to fit virtually any row width. Its primary benefits are touted as keeping the power on the ground through the tightest turns, improving maneuverability, reducing berming and improving operator control.

According to Case IH, any producer who has soil conditions that require better flotation and reduced compaction will appreciate the new tractor. “Whether raising sugar beets in North Dakota, potatoes in Idaho or rice in the Delta, farmers will find our new Magnum Rowtrac meets their unique cropping needs through a wide variety of row spacing and belt options,” says Zach Hetterick, a Case IH marketing manager.

“Customers have told us that it outperforms other two-track options with better handling and a smoother ride,” says Hetterick.”The flotation provided by the tracks allows them to get into the fields sooner since it avoids ruts and compaction, and doesn’t make divots when turning around.”

Jay Barth, Case IH’s marketing manager for Magnum tractors, North America, says the Magnum Rowtrac is especially appealing to potato growers.

“We have the narrow tracks that will fit that application, so the root zone is disturbed as minimally as possible,” he says. Because of the tractor’s improved floatation and sustained traction in wet field conditions, Barth adds that it’s the ideal workhorse in heavy mud and is well suited to hauling the heavy, wide equipment used in potato production.

According to Barth, the tractor’s transmission system is another attractive feature for potato producers. “With our CVT transmission, you have virtually infinite speeds,” he says. “You adjust it whenever needed to suit the soil and crop conditions that you’re operating in.” This helps boost productivity during harvest, Barth adds.
