HONORING OURSELVES

& EACH OTHERMark 12:30-31

Mark 12:30-31OLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’31 The second is this: `Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

HONORING

OHONOR means respect or esteem

OShowing honor, then, means treating ourselves or others respectfully because we value them highly.

LOVE comes from the Grk. word “AGAPE”

Means a sacrificial love that voluntarily suffers inconvenience, discomfort and even death for the benefit of another without expecting any thing in return.

It’s not a feeling, it’s a motivation for action that we are free to chose or reject

HOW CAN WE HONOR OURSELVES?

By developing a biblically-based SELF-ESTEEMOSELF-ESTEEM is a positive or a

negative evaluation of the self as in how we feel about it

OIt reflects a person’s over all evaluations of his or her own worth

5 STEPS IN ESTABLISHING SELF WORTH

1. Never speak negatively about yourselfOProv. 23:7

2. Avoid comparisonsO Everyone is unique

3. Focus on potentialsO Rom. 12:6

4. Do not focus on imperfections5. Discover the true source of confidence

3 VIEWS OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL

1. The view that God has of us.O The Lord does not observe

people merely outwardly as humans tend to do, rather God looks on the heart. 1Sam. 16:7.

O 1Kings 8:39 – the Lord knows the hearts of the children of men

OHannah acknowledge in her prayer, “God is a God of knowledge and by Him actions are weighed”- 1Sam 2:3

OJesus knew what was in man – Jn. 2:25

2. The opinions that others hold concerning usO Folks may hold an opinion of us

that is greatly exaggeratedO Jesus certainly did not deserve the

hateful reproaches that were heaped upon Him

O Apostle Paul suffered a good deal of unmerited character assassination

3. The perception we have of ourselvesO There is that appraisal one makes of

himselfO Honesty demands so that self

perception will be develop.O we must be careful not to think more

highly of ourselves than we ought - Rom. 12:3

O We must not attempt to be high-minded or wise in our own concepts – Rom. 11:20

O It is important that one must have a healthy view of himself

O Jesus said that we should love our neighbor as ourselves – Mt. 22:39

O Sadly many appear to have a very small appreciations of themselves that it hinders their effective service to God

CAUSES OF LOW SELF ESTEEM

CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW SELF-ESTEEM

1.Substance abuse2.Sexual promiscuity3.A critical spirit4.Materialism

THE CURE FOR DIMINISHED SELF ESTEEM

1.Man possesses dignity by virtue of his divine generation

2.Though blemished by sin man can regain his self esteem through the process of spiritual regeneration

SELF REFLECTION

OWhat do I need to give honor to myself?

HONORING EACH OTHER

ROMANS 13:7

OGive to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

OTo whom is honor due besides God? And how do we honor others?

HOW DO WE HONOR OTHERS?

OHonoring and respecting others will not happen when a superior or holier-than-thou attitude is present. Paul tells us to "esteem others better than" ourselves (Philippians 2:3).

PHILIPPIANS 2:3

ODo nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

OHonoring from a pure motive is possible only when we have a proper perspective of who God is, what we are, and who others are in relation to us and God.

OIt begins with deep honor and respect for God—and thus for all He says.

WHOM ELSE SHOULD WE HONOR?

OPARENTS: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you" (Exodus 20:12)

OCHILDREN: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.(Ephesians 6:4)

OSPOUSES: ( Proverbs 31:29) illustrates how a husband praises his wonderful wife: "Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all."

WHOM ELSE SHOULD WE HONOR?

O WIDOWS should be honored. In I Timothy 5:3, Paul instructs, "Honor widows who are really widows

ONOTE: Honoring one another touches all of our relationships

OGod wants a world where respect and honor of others is the way of life of its citizens. Romans 12:10 says just that: "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another."

OBe devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENTOWe are to honor one another, but do we? OPerhaps we should challenge ourselves to think of

ways to show honor to someone—anyone—each day.

OWhen was the last time we actively and consciously honored someone? When did we last thank, write a letter of appreciation, or call someone to show respect?

O If we are not, maybe it is a sign that we think too highly of ourselves and not highly enough of others.

EXPRESSION OF HONORING

OThis is the best time you can honor someone!

OWhen we obey God's command to honor all people, we are following our heavenly King and honoring Him.

Let’s apply……

OWrite a simple note of expressing your way of honoring someone.

TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY

OGod wants us to learn to honor everyone.

OImagine a world where everyone honors everyone else!

GALATIANS 6:9-10

O09Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

O10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
