SEMICON Europa 2015 in Dresden: new opportunities in a mature industry environment. In 2015, SEMICON Europa will be back in Dresden (Germany) following a new long-term strategy for the event, which will rotate in alternate years between Grenoble (France) and Dresden, two of Europe’s largest microelectronics clusters. With the support of public and private stakeholders across Europe, the new SEMICON Europa strategy will enable exhibitors to reach new audiences and business partners and take full advantage of the strong microelectronic clusters in Europe.

EU strategy to double the economic value of semiconductor manufacturing in Europe is supporting investments in EuropeThe European Union’s policy focus on semiconductor manufacturing is supporting investment in strategic growth areas with the aim of doubling the economic value of semiconductor manufacturing in Europe. With a commitment of 10 bn EUR public-private investment and 100 bn EUR from the industry, the EU strategy will create significant opportunities for equipment and material suppliers over the coming decade.

3.8 bn US$ equipment sales forecasted for 2015The European market is poised to grow in 2015, with equipment sales growing from 1.9 bn US$ in 2014 to 3.8 bn US$ in 2015, according to SEMI forecast.

SAXONY! – A Microelectronics and ICT location at its bestThere are many good reasons why Saxony is a top location for such global players active companies as GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Infineon, Intel, National Instruments, Samsung, and many more.

It’s all about the people who are one of Saxony’s greatest assets. Because – Saxons are exceptionally bright. 96 % of them have earned at least a university entrance diploma or have completed vocational training.

Another plus for Saxony is its extraordinary innovative power. This has been repeatedly confirmed by the EU’s Regional Innovation Scoreboard: Saxony is a European Innovation Leader.

Saxony’s greatest competitive edge – vibrant industry sectors that form the backbone of the business location. Whether it be mechanical engineering, microelectronics and ICT or more than 100 years of “Autoland Saxony” – strong and highly efficient industries have evolved from smart ideas and intelligent solutions.

“Silicon Saxony” is Europe’s largest (micro) electronics and ICT cluster. A unique concentration of companies providing extensive knowledge and expertise in the sectors micro and nanoelectronics, nanotechnology, organic & flexible electronics, energy-efficient systems, next generation communication, and smart systems is found in the region between Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz. More than 2,100 companies with a total of 51,000 employees are active along all steps of the ICT value creation chain.

Dresden is the place technological leaders of energy efficient organic light emitting diodes and producers of ultra-efficient organic solar cells call home, and where GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Infineon operate two of the most modern semiconductor factories on earth.

And Saxony enchants. With a superb blend of a remarkable historical heritage, a wide range of cultural attractions, and great natural beauty – Germany’s number one travel destination for culture enthralls residents and tourists alike.

Come and have a look at Dresden’s Frauenkirche Church and Zwinger Palace. Or visit Rafael’s “Sistine Madonna” in one of the most important museums in the entire world, the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD)… WELCOME TO SAXONY!

techarEnaTechARENAs at SEMICON Europa are the place to hear about the latest technology developments and breakthroughs in semiconductor manufacturing. All exhibiting companies have the opportunity to present their latest products and new technologies at the TechARENA exhibitor presentation sessions.

Enhanced scope of SEMICON Europa is supported by strong initiatives and leverages on current industry trends!microelectronics – the Enabler for industry 4.0

The European micro- and nanoelectronics are an essential driver of the implementation of Industry 4.0 – considered to be the 4th revolution of industrial manufacturing. The continuous advancements of the current automation in production towards a “smart fab of the future” will be a step-by-step model in the upcoming years. Promising areas for the microelectronics industry within the Industry 4.0 are MEMS including sensors and actors, embedded systems on chip including special sensors, microcontrollers and high-tech storage memory, power electronics, data transportation, energy harvesting, system integration and IT-security.

The European Society for Thin Films (EFDS)

”The European Society for Thin Films (EFDS) welcomes SEMICON Europa 2015 back in Dresden. Our members focus

on vacuum and thin film technologies which play an important role in semiconductor manufacturing. We are

looking forward to working with SEMI to establish potential content for the conferences and exposition based on

our members` needs.“

Dr. Johannes Strümpfel, Chairman of the Board, EFDS

Invest in the best high-tech venturesA first-time co-operation is established between SEMICON Europa 2015 and the International Congress “Innovationswerkstatt Kapital”. Young technology companies are changing the traditional business models of the past with imagination and in ahighpace.However,thebottleneckforthosestart-upsistoprocurethenecessarycapitalinordertoenableprototyping,market introductions of products and internationalization. At the same time the industry and the established SMEs are looking for ways to remain competitive and sustainable. As a logical consequence there must be a way to connect “newcomers” and “traditionalists”.

”Since 2013 the Innovationswerkstatt Kapital connects international and national investors with start-ups looking for

capital. In 2015 this conference will be running in parallel to SEMICON Europa 2015, with a focus on technology areas

such as Life Sciences, Material science, machinery and tools, environment and energy technologies, and ICT. One of the

highlights during SEMICON Europa 2015 will be a dedicated program to enforce the dialogue between start-ups from

the micro- and nanoelectronics industry with strategic incubators and investors as well as venture capital firms.“

”The focus of SEMICON Europa on mass manufacturing and successful commercialization of micro- and

nanoelectronic products on a global level is very interesting to us and our members. The current orientation of

SEMI towards applications and components within the medtech and life science area creates an interesting

platform to further enhance the commercial succes of our stakeholders.”

hybriD anD hEtErOGEnEOUS intEGratiOnThe real promise for the future in plastic electronics is expected to be founded on solution based printed devices, applications and products on flexible substrates. Considerable progress has been made over the past months, and a whole class of new products is expected to enter the respective markets in the midterm. The evolving “ecosystem” in integrated smart systems involves extensive cooperation between application developers, material firms, printers, equipment makers, and a wide range of firms making printed electronic components. It takes a complete printed electronics supply chain to develop and to manufacture fully integrated products. In most cases this demand for integration competences and resources exceeds the scale and scope of a single company.
