LARRY KADISNational President

I t is our privilege to share with you, our generous supporters, the 2015 ORT America Annual Report.

As the leading funders of ORT programs around the world, we ORTists here in America take pride in the difference we make in the lives of our students. Over 300,000 students throughout the world benefit from an ORT education.

We have had the opportunity over our years of involvement with this wonderful organization to visit schools, see the programs and most importantly, meet the students and dedicated educators.

A couple of examples of our philanthropic dollars at work allows for greater appreciation of the critical role ORT plays: In Israel, youth at risk living in the periphery are given education and training to compete in a hi-tech world. In the former Soviet Union, ORT is a beacon for Jewish students, providing STEM* education along with a Jewish curriculum and activities.

We are delighted to share our accomplishments with you. Together we will meet the challenges and seize the opportunities.

Thank you for your partnership and generosity.

W hat a year it has been! ORT America has been forging ahead to streamline operations, focus on growth and create a more successful fundraising campaign. Since the 1880s ORT has been

the greatest non-profit educational system in the world, giving Jews and non-Jews a better future through job training. Millions of lives have been improved through ORT efforts, and ORT America has developed a bold plan using 21st century tools to more effectively reach donors to increase fundraising to meet the ever-growing needs of our students in Israel, in the former Soviet Union and in other parts of the world.

In Israel we help disadvantaged youth in peripheral areas of the country obtain a solid education, and in three technological colleges we offer training for young adults to obtain knowledge and skills for career success. In the former Soviet Union, ORT STEM* instruction and Jewish studies offer thousands of students unparalleled educational advancement.

I am proud to lead the team of ORT America staff who raise funds for this worthy organization. ORT was there to help in the struggles of the past, and ORT will be there to help as Jews around the world face the challenges of this century. Thank you for your generous support and for making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Together we can go forward to a brighter future for the Jewish people.

MARTIN GREENBERGChief Executive Officer

JOSEPHNOAM

“The teachers and the surroundings give us what we need. We’re taught to accept others, and to reject racism.”

“ At this school we’re taught to respect one another. And if we try hard and put forth the effort, we can get help. I have also learned about the importance of keeping my individuality.”

DANY

“ Teachers give good explanations. If I need more help, there is always the opportunity. The school teaches about love and warmth.”

YURI

“ I wasn’t learning before. But here, teachers helped me learn everything very well – they added value to every single thing. Our teachers help you more than 100% and regard you as family. We get everything we need for the rest of our lives.”

RIVKA

“We’re taught respect – and that doing is not enough, we must give with a full heart.”

AVRAHAM

“ I really like the variety of studies. This is just one of three high schools offering the police study track, and very few have our computer courses. We’re taught patience and acceptance, and I learned that not everyone is racist.”

Teens Benefit in Hodayot Youth Village

Most of the 250 students in Hodayot Youth Village come from families ranking low on the socio-economic scale, from disadvantaged backgrounds, and many are immigrants. Thanks to ORT programs, these youth progress and learn how to integrate into society when they leave the village. A group of teens who benefit from ORT opportunities discuss the strengths of their experience in Hodayot.

Ben is a first-year student in both practical mechanical engineering and the natural gas study track at Beersheva Technological College, part of the Kadima Mada College Network. He is certain that all big companies in Israel will use natural gas in their facilities, and there will be a great demand for members of this profession. Ben plans to stay in the area “to continue Ben Gurion’s vision to develop the Negev.”

Grigory Vodopian is the vice-principal at the ORT de Gunzburg School in St. Petersburg, Russia, the flagship enterprise of sixteen ORT day schools in the former Soviet Union.

Two Majors Can Lead to One Great Profession

Enhancing the Educator Experience

“The instructors help us a lot, especially in physics. I tried to study physics in high school and couldn’t, but here I can, because the instruction is so good. Every day I learn something new. I believe Kadima Mada gives it all - and I believe there will be more laboratories and double the students because of industry demands.”

“With ORT support I designed a computer project that led to our school becoming a leading secondary education institution in terms of information and communications technology (ICT). Thanks to ORT support for teachers, I took part in international seminars to learn about innovative pedagogical developments. Our teachers and I help our school stay highly competitive to attract new applicants interested in high-level education in the framework of a modern Jewish school.”

A Future Learning Space for the Present

Supplemental Career Training Fosters Excellence

“This Future Learning Space was a vision the school had with the municipality of Beersheva before Kadima Mada involvement, and it’s like a dream come true! For teachers it takes longer to prepare a lesson here, but students understand it much better. I have more of a “guide” role than a “teacher” role to show students how they can learn, and they enjoy the flexible environment. We would love to have more than just the one space.”

“I’m going to be a public relations manager, so I enrolled in a Photoshop course at the ORT St. Petersburg Training Center. I really liked the classroom atmosphere, the attentive, competent teacher and the in-depth, well-structured syllabus. I finished the course and my project on banner design qualified for the final round at the university competition. I will be representing my university at the city competition – my first victory, thanks to ORT.”

Tuvyahu High School in Beersheva is the site of the first Kadima Mada Future Learning Space. Ayelet is a teacher who uses this brand new classroom. Two hundred of these state-of-the-art classrooms are envisioned to be situated throughout the country, particularly in high-need, under-resourced peripheral areas.

Anya Botvinnick is in her last year at St. Petersburg Academic University. The ORT St. Petersburg Training Center offers qualification upgrades for staff of Jewish community organizations, and classes for St. Petersburg yeshiva students will begin as part of a new initiative to serve the community.

MOVING FORWARD: OUR FUNDRAISING PRIORITIES

PAGE 8 | 2015 ORT AMERICA ANNUAL REPORT

These operations rely on contributions to further their

programs are the focus of ORT America fundraising

activities.

IN ISRAEL

World ORT Kadima Mada (Science Journey) enhances

education through its programs in 200 affiliated

schools and within 35 hospitals, with a focus on STEM

instruction (science, technology, engineering and math)

and humanistic values.

THE EDUCATIONAL NETWORK encompasses schools

in the periphery of Israel and include Kfar Hassidim

and Hodayot youth villages, Yeshiva Abir Yaakov and

the Levinson and Rabin schools in Kiryat Yam, where

students come from challenging backgrounds and

benefit from programs to improve their academic

standing. Kfar Silver was just added to this network.

THE TECHNICAL COLLEGES NETWORK

Institutions in Beersheva, Tel Hai, Shlomo and at Lake

Kineret offer tracks in practical engineering, natural

gas certification and other disciplines that give students

hands-on training and skills for careers in high-tech

industries .

FUTURE LEARNING SPACES

The installation of 200 of these state-of-the-art learning

rooms across the country, particularly in disadvantaged

areas, is envisioned. With large screens, computers, 3D

printers and a flexible environment, students advance

through collegial interaction and self-learning.

YOUniversity

This after-school initiative offers courses in science,

technology, engineering, math and robotics.

Collaborative instruction, interesting projects,

competitions and accessibility make YOUniversity

a popular program.

PEDAGOGICAL INNOVATION THROUGH RESEARCH

AND DEVELOPMENT

This division manages the genesis and implementation

of innovative programs that change the long-term

educational landscape in Israel.

IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION

World ORT re-created a dynamic educational network

across 10 states and 40 cities, serving more than 28,000

citizens, after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Sixteen ORT Jewish day schools provide outstanding

STEM and Jewish studies instruction. ORT programs in

the FSU advance education, build Jewish identity, and

help thousands obtain skills for meaningful careers.

THE DE GUNZBURG SCHOOL IN

ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

This ORT flagship institution offers the STEM curriculum

with humanistic values and Jewish studies. Several

other schools in the World ORT network are in need

of funds to continue ORT programs: the Kazan ORT

Mishpachtenu School, the Zaporozhye ORT Aleph

Jewish Gymnasium and the Tallinn ORT Jewish School in

Estonia.

THE ORT VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER (VTC)

in the St. Petersburg Jewish Community Center

(YESOD) offers educational services to over 100,000

local residents, giving Jewish community members

advantages in the workplace.

INTERNATIONAL

ORT Global Networking Programs include student

exchanges, competitions, and options for summer

school; and professional development seminars for

educators.

ORT was founded in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1880,

dedicated to its mission to save lives and repair the world

through education. Since its establishment, millions of

individuals have benefited from their ORT education.

World ORT, through its partnerships across the globe,

comprises the largest non-governmental non-profit

educational enterprise in the world. ORT programs focus

on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)

education, and the organization provides state-of-the-

art facilities, equipment and materials to enhance the

operations of many partner and affiliated educational

institutions that offer computer technology, robotics,

biotechnology, physics, multimedia, environmental

design, architecture and more. In addition to programs

for students, ORT provides robust components for the

training of teachers, for infrastructure development and

pedagogical assessment.

In many countries, ORT provides the template for

government officials to shape their national educational

systems, and in others, ORT schools are the most

prestigious, offering a substantive STEM curriculum

paired with humanistic values and Jewish studies.

ORT success is anchored in its Jewish roots, in the

principle of tikkun olam – repairing the world through

acts of kindness and generosity, in Maimonides’ eight

levels of charity, and in the rich history of the Jewish

people. Although students and teachers in ORT schools

come from different backgrounds, they all have respect

for diversity at their core.

ORT America supports these institutions in the

Unites States:
