WelcomeAligning with the mission statement of the American Thoracic Society “To improve health worldwide by advancing research, clinical care and public health in respiratory disease, critical illness, and sleep disorders,” it is the goal of this conference to educate professionals in Ohio who treat pulmonary illnesses.

We invite you to participate in the first seminar of the Ohio Thoracic Society at Nationwide Children’s Hospital as we connect and network with other chest and respiratory professionals in Ohio and surrounding areas to enhance and promote clinical care and research including transition of care from pediatric to adult providers. ObjectivesAt the end of this Seminar participants should be able to:

1. Characterize current treatment options and management strategies for a wide-range of lung diseases and OSA2. Utilize most efficacious surgical and interventional therapeutic procedures for lung diseases and OSA3. Apply motivational techniques to improve adherence of patients4. Anticipate and address important medical-legal issues in the care of these patients

Intended AudienceHealth care professionals, including adult and pediatric pulmonary and critical care physicians, radiologists and thoracic surgeons

LocationThe seminar will be held at Stecker Auditorium, in the Education Building, located at 575 S. 18th Street. Participants may park in the 18th Street Outpatient Care Parking Garage and walk through the ‘Outpatient Center’ into the double doors of the Education Building where Stecker Auditorium is located. The auditorium is located on the left just inside the door. A parking token to pay for parking will be issued upon request at the end of the seminar.

Faculty Karen McCoy, MD: Professor of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University; Chief, Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Benjamin T. Kopp, MD: Principal Investigator, Center for Microbial Pathogenesis with an emphasis on augmenting host immune defenses and biomarker discovery in early cystic fibrosis and sickle cell lung disease. Dr. Kopp leads a Pulmonary/Sickle Cell multi-disciplinary clinic and is Co-Chair for the national ATS Pediatric Assembly Journal Club.

Scott Cackler, PA: Manager, Advanced Practice Providers, The James Cancer Hospital, The Ohio State University; While working clinically in the division of thoracic surgery, Mr. Cackler has contributed to the LVRS program and assisted on all LVRS cases over the past few years.

Elliot Dasenbrook, MD, MHS: Assistant Professor of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine; Adult CF Center Director of Cleveland; Dr. Dasenbrook’s clinical focus is on partnering with patients to deliver high quality patient-centered care focused on improving quality of life. Dr. Dasenbrook’s research focus is on identifying and reversing modifiable risk factors associated with decreased survival in patients with pulmonary lung disease.

Phillip Diaz, MD: Medical Director, Pulmonary Rehabilitation; Co-director, The Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Program, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center; Professor of Medicine for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, The Ohio State University

Thomas Gildea, MD, MS, FCCP: Dr. Thomas Gildea was appointed to Cleveland Clinic in 2003 in the Advanced Lung Disease Section of the Department of Pulmonary Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Gildea was the first physician in North America to perform electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy. He was given an Innovator Award at Cleveland Clinic in 2005 with his team proposing a novel device for a bronchoscopy needle-delivered fiducial lung implant.

Francis McCormack, MD: Division Director, Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine; Professor of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; Dr. McCormack’s research/clinical interests [Basic Laboratory Focus] are the structure and function relationships of surfactant protein A, surfactant homeostasis, surfactant proteins (collections) in host defense; Mechanisms of pulmonary fibrosis; Influenza; [Clinical Research Focus] Genetic interstitial lung disease, and Lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Daniel McNeff: CEO, Legally Mine; Senior Vice President of one of the nation’s largest financial services companies for 15 years; Mr. McNeff is a published author with one book and many magazine and newspaper articles.

Jon Parsons, MD, MSc, FCCP: Associate Director, The Ohio State University’s Asthma Center; Director, The Ohio State University’s Cough Program; Lead Author, American Thoracic Society Guidelines on Exercise Induced Bronchoconstriction

Faculty (cont.)Titus Sheers, MD, MBA, FACP: Program Director, Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program, Akron Children’s Hospital; Medical Education and Research Chair, Akron General Medical Center; Dr. Sheers has been active in Cystic Fibrosis care at Akron Children’s since 1995. He co-moderated the first workshop at the Cystic Fibrosis National Conference in 2006 on Death and Dying. Dr. Sheers has also lead the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Boards along with his CF Partner, Dr. McBennett, in 2012 for the hospital.

Jack Stevens, PhD: Psychologist, Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sleep Disorder Center; Associate Professor of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University; Dr. Stevens has been the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on multiple federal grants involving motivational interviewing, and has given lectures on motivational interviewing to a wide variety of professionals, including pediatricians, dieticians, nurses, and obstetricians/gynecologists.

Rohan Thompson, MD, FAAP: Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University; Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, Nationwide Children’s Hospital; Director, Newborn Cystic Fibrosis Program, Nationwide Children’s Hospital; Director, NPD Laboratory, Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital reserves the right to cancel any program listed based upon enrollment or other contributing factors. Individuals who have enrolled will be notified at least one week in advance of cancellation. Full tuition will be refunded in this case.
