I can’t believe that the summer ended already.

We had an amazing time at the MJCC splashing at

the outdoor pool, making new friends in summer

camp, and getting fit in the fitness center.

I want to wish you a sincere Shanah Tova,

Happy New Year, and I hope

that you all have a meaningful

High Holiday season. Please

check out the holiday closure

schedule on the next page.

This fall we will kick off our

third Jewish Literary and Cultural

Arts Festival. Beginning Thursday,

October 15, and running through

Wednesday, November 18, we

will have a varied and dynamic group of critically

acclaimed authors and artists, including Ambassador

Dennis Ross, native Memphian Alan Lightman, Rabbi

Sherre Hirsch, Faye and Jonathan Kellerman, and

many others. Festival details are on pages 12 and 13.

We are also thrilled that our first Israeli in

Residence, interdisciplinary artist Shirel Horovitz, will

be here for four weeks in October and November

to share her many talents with us. Shirel will be

lecturing, leading workshops, and collaborating with

the community to present a final gallery exhibit.

Israelis in Residence is a three-part series through

the Center for Jewish Living and Learning, a new

department at the MJCC which is being underwritten

by the Lemsky Endowment Fund. This series will

bring Israelis with a range of specialties to Memphis

to share with us throughout the year. More details

about Shirel’s visit can be found on page 15.

Be sure to join me at Dueling Pianos at the

J on Saturday, October 10, at 8pm. We will be

transforming the MJCC lobby into your favorite

piano bar with an open bar and hors-d'oeuvres—a

great event for anyone 21+. See page 15 for more

information about Dueling Pianos at the J.

The kids will have a blast at

Camp 365 School's Out programs

during Veteran’s Day, Fall Break,

and Winter Break. Register soon

to guarantee a spot for your child.

Find more information on page 6.

We have teamed up with

the Junior Grizzlies Basketball

program to bring the best of the

best to our youth sports program. There will be

a fall/winter league for Jr. Kindergarten through

grade 4, and a winter/spring league for grades

5-12. You can find information about this and

other athletics programs on pages 18 and 19.

And, finally, save the date for our third annual

MJCC Health and Wellness Expo on Sunday,

January 17, 2016. It will be a day filled with

health and wellness, including group fitness

classes, vendors, workshops, and so much

more. Be on the lookout for more details.

Please let me know if you have any questions or

concerns. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Keron Psillas: Loss and Beautyin the Gallery Oct 15 – Nov 6Opening and Artist Lecture Thu, Oct 15 at 7:30pmKeron Psillas, photographer and essayist, kicks off the Jewish Literary and Cultural Festival with Loss and Beauty, Creating Solace in a Land of Infinite Sorrow.

Psillas' project was inspired by Hannelore Brenner’s book The Girls of Room 28, which tells the story of fourteen survivors with an emphasis on how creative acts of writing, drawing, singing, and performing were sustaining and healing for them. Through this inspiration, Psillas took images of the loss of the Holocaust and layered them with images showing the beauty of the surrounding natural environment. Each photograph is accompanied by an essay that shares the reality of the image.

Jin and John PowellDec 8–Jan 22A trained figurative artist, Jin Powell's work integrates transitional techniques with boundless modern thought in a mixed-media format. Each work projects the true feminine experience with elegance, a beauty that seems illusory, a surreal emotion. Each work is imbued with a sense of movement, capturing the heart with a smile.

As a sculptor, John Powell's art is a mirror of his thoughts - a reflection and outward manifestation of my physical and psychological journey. "Whether I'm working with wood, metals, or stone, and regardless of the nature of the experience , I end with something of beauty that captures a part of my being – my unpredictable life."

Shirel Horovitz: Israeli Artist in ResidenceMJCC Israeli Artist In Residence Oct 19–Nov 19Opening Wed, Nov 11 at 7:30pmHorovitz studied in a women's Yeshiva, served in an intelligence unit in the IDF, traveled through India, and lived in London for a year as an exchange student, all before receiving her BFA in 2007 from Jerusalem's Bezalel Academy of Art. She is now working as an independent artist in her Tel Aviv studio after recently completing her Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Art at Tel Aviv University.

A social artist who creates performances and installations exploring gaps, tensions, and possibilities that exist between disciplines, communities, objects, and places, Horovitz has exhibited in major galleries and art festivals in Tel Aviv and is a regular guest lecturer of the fine art department at Bezalel Academy of Art. Alongside her art practice, she gives lectures and leads art workshops with a variety of organizations.

Single Jewish Male Seeking Soul MateFeminist icon, activist, national lecturer, founding editor and writer for Ms. Magazine, and author of 11 books, Letty Cottin Pogrebin’s novel follows Zach Levy, the left-leaning son of Holocaust survivors who promises his mother that he’ll marry within the tribe. But when Zach falls for Cleo, an African-American activist who grew up in Memphis during the time of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, he must reconcile the family he loves with the woman who might be his soul mate.

Pogrebin will speak about the impact of inherited trauma (like the Holocaust or slavery) on past and future generations, the tension between romantic love and responsibility to one's people, and the changing relationship between Blacks and Jews in America.

center for jewish living and learning & the israel center

Israeli Artist in Residence: Shirel Horovitz A project and installationFor our first major program of the Center for Jewish Living and Learning & The Israel Center, we are lucky enough to host Shirel Horovitz as our first Israeli Artist in Residence.

As the foundation for her month-long project, Horovitz will research the connections between the city of Memphis and its Jewish community. During her residency, she will meet with a variety of groups in Memphis, leading workshops and sessions constructed around questions of place and identity—the daily routes in the city, the personal stories woven with the collective history of the city, and the mutual imprints exchanged between city and people. These explorations and stories will be translated into fabricated objects that will form the raw materials Horovitz

will use to assemble the final installation.

Horovitz will be lecturing as part of the MJCC Jewish Literary and Cultural Arts Festival, offering a community-wide lecture on Wednesday, October 21, at 7:30 pm (see more information on page 12).

She will also offer multiple workshops with a maximum of 15 people in each workshop. No prior art experience is needed to join, and your participation will help us ensure that her final Shainberg Art Gallery installation reflects the diversity of the Memphis Jewish community. Keep an eye out for the dates and times of the different workshops to be announced.

You can sign up for a workshop by contacting Heather Kufert at [email protected] or (901) 259-9227.

Heather Kufert is the Director of Jewish Innovation and Engagement as part of the new Center for

Jewish Living and Learning at the MJCC.Heather, who grew up in Charlotte, NC, began shaping her

Jewish identity through the lens of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) youth movement and camping system. At

Florida State University (FSU), she studied elementary education, while becoming deeply involved with FSU Hillel.

Inspired to work in the Jewish community, Heather spent five years as the Program Director at Temple Israel in

Tallahassee, Florida, where she created and developed innovative programs for all ages and frequently led services as Cantorial Soloist her last two years. She recently received

dual master degrees in Jewish Professional Leadership and Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University.

Billy Elliot the Musical Playhouse on the SquareSun, Sep 6 at 2pm • $20 fee/$18m • *Ages 13+Set in a northern English town amidst the turbulent 1984 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot the Musical is an inspiring tale of one boy’s journey as he exchanges his boxing gloves for dancing shoes. Featuring music by Elton John, The New York Times declares that it “isn’t a dance show; it’s about why people need dance.”*Is Billy Elliot good for kids? The show is littered liberally with the sort of bad language you’d expect to find in a blue-collar community during tough times. A few mildly violent riot scenes and a 2+ hour runtime may make the show unsuitable for some youngsters.

The three-act ballet, while based on one of the most popular stories in the world, is enduring in its own right.

Wellness Staff SpotlightStephanie Johnson, Fitness Director

Stephanie is originally from Savannah, GA. She comes to Memphis after 6 years of working with the JCC in Savannah. She brings with her not only her family (husband Billy, and their children Zoe and Vasili), but also more than seventeen

years of experience in the fitness industry.

Stephanie’s passion for fitness started in high school when she started working with her fellow athletes as a student athletic trainer.

Stephanie graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology and a Minor in Athletic Training, and then a Master of Science in Kinesiology.

Stephanie loves to watch movement patterns and work on the imbalances that people are facing before moving them further with their workouts.

The athletic trainer kicks in when someone is post-rehab and they are not continuing their exercises from rehabilitation. This is an important factor that she has noticed over the years that can and will cause imbalances in the older population. Stephanie has been a Personal Trainer for seventeen years and an Exercise Physiologist for fifteen years.

She is always willing to step up and step out to help anyone in need.
