Mariano Paul KowerkoAssistant Men’s Soccer Coach

Paul Kowerko is in his eighth season overall and third straight as an assistant men’s soccer coach for Heartland Community College.

Kowerko joined the Hawks in 2007 and was with Heartland for five years before returning to help lead the squad in 2013.

In Kowerko’s first year back, he helped the Hawks to a 7-13-1 record and made an appearance in the Region 24 quarterfinals. He also helped coach All-Region 24 and Mid-West Athletic Conference First Team pick, Kevin Cheatham.

Kowerko also coaches for the Midwest Reign Soccer Club in Bloomington, IL. He worked for two years as an instructor and player developer at Club Magic in Frankfort, IL and was the co-coach for the first varsity high school program in the Twin Cities at University High School. He holds his “E” coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and has a high school coaching license.

Kowerko and his wife, Phyllis, have two children and three grandchildren.

Dr. Bodo FritzenHead Men’s Soccer Coach

Dr. Bodo Fritzen is in his ninth season as the head men’s soccer coach at Heartland Community College.

In eight seasons running the Hawks’ men’s soccer program, Fritzen has compiled a 73-71-10 record, including a 23-32-3 (.418) record in Region 24 action

and a 48-30-6 (.615) mark at home. In 2009, Fritzen was named the Mid-West Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after the Hawks went 13-4-1 and earned the #3 seed in the Region 24 tournament.

During his time at Heartland, Fritzen has coached 14 All-Region 24 players, 23 all-conference players, 11 academic all-conference selections, two Academic All-Americans, two-time Region 24 Player of the Year, Javier Torres and 2010 Region 24 Midfielder of the Year, Tyler DeGroot.

Fritzen coached the men’s soccer team at Illinois State University for seven years and spent a year as the Bloomington High School coach before beginning his 20-year stint at University High School. As the U-High coach, Fritzen posted a 282-107-36 record and helped the team to four state tournament appearances, including a third place showing in 1998.

He also coached the U-High girl’s team for eight seasons, taking them to the state finals twice and earning a second place finish one year.

Fritzen is a Distinguished Professor of foreign languages at Heartland Community College.
