Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during which the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs when rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, which consists of the heart's two upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, when a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. While that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart's two lower chambers, and this prevents the lower and upper chambers from working together effectively. Though AF does not always produce noticeable symptoms, some people with AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially when the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person's risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

You need sleep as much as you need food. Many people neglect the importance of having enough sleep. With water alone, an average person could survive one to two months without food (that also varies from an individual’s body fat and other factors).

How To Get A Better Nights

SLEEPWhen it is 3 a.m. and you are pacing

the halls of your dark and quiet house while everyone else is sleeping soundly in their beds, it may seem like you are the only person in the entire world who is not getting some much-needed shut-eye. However, many people struggle to get a good night’s sleep.

Information from the National Sleep Foundation, Better Sleep Council, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and several other organizations indicate that between 20 and 40 percent of the U.S. population experiences insomnia. Many of the people suffering from insomnia have family histories of the condition or are also experiencing depression. Insomnia rates are higher for people over the age of 60, and women are twice as likely to suffer from insomnia than men.

Among Canadians, 40 percent of a recently polled group of 2,000 individuals

reported insomnia symptoms at least three times per week in the preceding month. French-speaking Canadians were less likely to experience insomnia than English-speaking residents, but researchers are unsure why.

Although how much sleep a person requires varies from individual to individual, the general consensus is that adults should receive between seven and eight hours of sleep per night to feel rested.

The Institute of Medicine estimates that hundreds of billions of dollars are spent annually on medical costs that are directly related to sleep disorders, while statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that 100,000 vehicle accidents occur annually as a result of drowsy drivers. These figures underscore the importance of getting a good night’s rest and understanding how to treat insomnia in order to do so.

Page 13: 2015 Medical Directory

13YOUR GUIDE TO AREA HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS & SERVICES

Insomnia may be a by-product of a physical condition. A person dealing with side effects of

certain medications, chronic pain, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and a bevy of other conditions may find it difficult to sleep at night. Identifying the cause of the insomnia can make it easier to treat, so those who can’t sleep at night may have an undiagnosed condition that is affecting their ability to fall asleep.

Exercise can help promote better sleep habits.

A workout will tire you out, increase feel-good endorphins throughout the body and raise body temperature. As the body recovers from the workout, it may feel sated and you can drift off to sleep more easily. Just do not work out too late. Aim to complete a workout two to three hours before planning on going to sleep so your body is not still amped up when your head hits the pillow.

Establish a regular sleep schedule.Humans are creatures of routine, and

training the body to recognize when it is time to wake up and when it’s time to go to sleep can make it easier to enjoy a good night’s rest. Stick to a consistent schedule as much as possible -- even on the weekends. It isn’t possible to make up for lost sleep, so pull yourself out of bed at the same time in the morning, even if you didn’t get a good night’s rest. Over time you will condition yourself to accept certain times for sleeping and waking.

The National Sleep Foundation advises... avoiding heavy meals, caffeine

and nicotine before bed. Each of these things can rev up the body and make it

difficult to settle down.

On the surface, a cocktail may seem like a good way to unwind and relax. Although a drink or two may help many people fall asleep, it will not produce the deep sleep necessary to recharge the body. When the effects of the alcohol wear off

after a few hours, your sleep is likely to be interrupted. In addition, relying on alcohol as a sleep remedy can lead to dependence and further health problems.

Get up and accept a poor night’s sleep

rather than tossing and turning. It can be easy to associate the bed with

wakefulness and frustration if you stay in bed and watch the clock. Getting up and reading or listening to relaxing music can help distract the mind and relax the body. Avoid working on the computer or watching television. Bright light can reduce the production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, resulting in further difficulty settling down.

Thanks to their reproductive hormones, women undergo more sleep

changes and challenges than men.Afterward, being woken by children or

worrying about them can lead to sleepless nights. Many women experience trouble sleeping during menopause. Different therapies may be needed to figure out the solution for a restful night’s sleep.

Individuals can try natural remedies

to induce sleep or stay asleep. In addition to good sleep hygiene and

maintaining a regular sleep schedule, there are a number of herbs that can relax the body. Chamomile tea has soothing properties, and drinking chamomile tea before bed can be an effective sleep strategy. Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of Ancient Greece and Rome, and it can reduce anxiety and promote sleep. Melatonin supplements are produced from plant sources and can induce sleep when taken in the right amounts. Speak with a doctor about possible remedies to find a sleep system that works for you.

Insomnia is a more common problem than many people may think. Recognizing insomnia as a problem and seeking treatment can help many people get on the road to a more restful night’s sleep.

Is there a link betweenGMO’s and cancer?

The use of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, in foods remains

a controversial subject. The concerns about modifying genetic material in foods surrounds the uncertainty about the medical implications of consuming foods that have had their DNA changed in a laboratory. One such concern is whether or not there is a link between GMOs and cancer. To understand such a potential connection, it first helps to understand GMOs and why they spark such controversy.

What are GMOs and why are they used? GMOs are plants or animals that have

been genetically changed, but many people associate GMOs with foods, namely corn and other grain products. Genes from one species are inserted into another to create a desired trait. This is known as gene splicing. Plants may be modified to be more resistant to drought or harsh conditions. Other genes may be altered to make plants more resilient and resistant to pesticides or certain diseases.

Most commonly altered foodsCertain foods are subject to genetic

modification more so than others. Soybeans, corn, cotton, canola, papaya, zucchini, and other squashes are some of the more commonly modified crops. The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications also lists alfalfa, chicory, eggplant, flax, potato, rice, sugar beet, and tobacco on its list of GM crops.

Concerns about GMOsThe risks associated with consuming

GMOs are largely unknown. According to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, researchers have not conclusively confirmed if GMOs

increase a person’s risk of developing cancer or other diseases. Some experts say the benefits of eating whole grains and vegetables -- even GMO varieties -- outweigh the concerns about GMOs, while others are not so sure.

According to a study published in the peer-reviewed journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, French researchers discovered that rats fed genetically engineered corn or those exposed to the active ingredient in the weed killer Roundup over a long period suffered premature death and developed mammary tumors while also suffering from kidney and liver damage. Researchers fed rats GM corn or gave them water laced with Roundup at levels allowed in the United States. The research found that even limited exposure to these products produced mammary tumors and led to severe liver and kidney damage, which occurred in as little as four months in males and seven months in females.

Fifty percent of the male rats and 70 percent of the females died earlier than the rats in the control group. The corn studied was Monsanto’s NK603 seed, a variety developed to live through heavy dosings of pesticide. Roundup is a pesticide that plants can consume at levels many toxicologists say could cause harm to humans.

ConclusionsMore research is necessary to confirm or

debunk any suspected link between GMOs and cancer, and even then it may be difficult to weed out risks between brands, foods and types of modification. People concerned about GMOs can eat organic foods or GMO-free foods.

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland, which means it secretes hormones directly into the blood, that is typically located in the lower front of the neck. The thyroid is tasked with producing thyroid hormones, which help the body use energy and stay warm. Thyroid hormones also ensure the brain, heart, muscles and other organs are functioning properly. When a person has thyroid cancer, which is relatively rare compared to other cancers, abnormal cells begin to grow in the thyroid gland, and this abnormal cell growth can lead to a variety of symptoms. A lump or swelling in the neck is the most common symptom of thyroid cancer, but pain in the neck, trouble swallowing and breathing troubles that may include wheezing are potential indicators as well. Five-year survival rates for thyroid cancer are very high, but men and women who detect any of the aforementioned symptoms should bring them to the attention of their physicians immediately, as early detection of cancer plays a role in the effectiveness of treatment.

Only recently has a reliable screening process made it easier for physicians to detect the presence of cancer

in the lungs. Unlike cancers of the breast and colon, which have long been screened for using mammograms and colonoscopies, respectively, lung cancers had no such screening processes until recently, when the American Society of Clinical Oncologists recommended using low-dose computed tomography to screen smokers and former smokers at high risk for developing lung cancer. Such screenings, which may help detect lung cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages, are recommended annually for those considered to be at high risk of developing lung cancer.

Few things can prove more painful or inconvenient than stomach bugs.

Digestive tract illnesses can cause persons to spend many hours of the day running to restrooms while confining others to the house for extended periods of time. Though often temporary, stomach bugs can last several days to more than a week and they may lead to more dire situations if not properly treated.

CAUSESStomach bugs are known as

gastroenteritis, a condition characterized by an inflamed and irritated stomach and intestines. The Mayo Clinic says people are most likely to contract gastroenteritis after eating contaminated foods or drinking contaminated water. Sharing items, like utensils, with someone who is infected is another way to contract gastroenteritis. Viral gastroenteritis is caused by a virus that enters the body. However, bacteria and parasites also are responsible for stomach bug outbreaks. Viruses that trigger gastroenteritis include adenoviruses, rotaviruses, calciviruses, astroviruses, and noroviruses. Bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis include

E. coli, salmonella, campylobacter, and shingella.

SYMPTOMSStomach bugs often strike suddenly.

Sufferers may experience queasiness or nausea and a loss of appetite. Pain or bloating in the stomach also may occur. Vomiting and diarrhea often cause many people to suspect something is wrong, and some stomach conditions are also accompanied by fever, achiness and lethargy.

TREATMENTMany people opt for a wait-and-see

approach when struck with stomach bugs. Gastroenteritis often heals on its own. Some refer to it as a “24-hour-bug” and find that once the stomach has been purged clean, the offender no longer wreaks havoc on the body. But stomach bugs can be more persistent as well. Sufferers should visit a doctor if vomiting or diarrhea last more than a few days. Doctors may take a stool sample to determine what’s behind the bug. In the event of a bacterial infection, an antibiotic may be needed to clear up the infection.

and feel better soon.

Visiting a doctor when stomach problems persist is also beneficial because he or she may be able to rule out certain conditions, such as colitis, ulcers or Crohn’s disease.

HELPFUL HINTSWhen a stomach bug strikes, it is

best to refrain from eating, especially when vomiting regularly. Stick to clear broths and liquids, which are easy on the digestive system, while the stomach is irritated. Once vomiting has subsided, sufferers should opt for a bland diet. When plagued by diarrhea, the BRAT diet is adviseable. This acronym stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. These foods can help bind a person and are relatively easy to digest.

Because a stomach bug often leads to dehydration, drink plenty of fluids. To restore salt and electrolyte balances, sports drinks are adviseable for adults, while a beverage like Pedialyte is best for children and the elderly.

When symptoms begin to subside, sufferers can gradually add foods back into their diets. But men and women should avoid particularly spicy or heavy foods until they are convinced that they have fully recovered.

Many people are tempted to turn to an anti-diarrheal medication at the first sign of a stomach bug. However, the side effects of gastroenteritis are the body’s method of ridding itself from whatever has brought on symptoms. Failure to let nature run its course could result in a rebound of symptoms or a longer-lasting sickness.

Stomach bugs are never enjoyable, but there are ways to manage the symptoms and get back on the road to recovery.

To avoid suffering from stomach bugs, men and women should

consider the following tips.

• Frequently wash your hands when preparing food and thoroughly cook foods, particularly meats, poultry and eggs, to reduce potential exposure to bacteria.

• E. coli may be present on some fresh produce, so wash produce carefully before consumption.

• Consider taking a probiotic supplement to increase the amount of

good bacteria in your digestive tract. Yogurt also contains live cultures that are good at maintaining digestive health.

• Avoid contact with people who claim to have the stomach flu.

• Promptly consult a doctor if symptoms do not go away or if you

have a high fever or blood in your stool. This may indicate a different illness.

Nerve damage, circulation problems, and infections can lead to serious foot problems if you have diabetes. However, there are precautions you can take to maintain healthy feet.Good management of your diabetes and an overall healthy lifestyle helps to keep this disease under control. This should include regular medical exams, monitoring of blood sugar, regular exercise, and a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. You can help prevent serious complications involving your feet by following a good foot care regimen.

DAILY FOOT CAREThere are a few habits you should adopt and try to do every day. If you are physically unable to inspect your own feet, use a mirror or ask someone to help:•Don’t sit with your legs crossed or

stand in one position for long periods of time.

•Check your feet and toes, inspecting the top, sides, soles, heels, and the area in

between the toes.

Contact your doctor immediately if

you discover any sores, redness, cuts, blisters, or

bruises.• Wash your feet every day

in warm water with mild soap. Hot water and harsh soaps can damage your skin.

Check the water temperature with your fingers or elbow before

putting your feet in because your diabetes may make it difficult to sense water temperature with your feet.

•Dry your feet thoroughly and pat dry gently. Infections tend to develop in moist areas, so make sure you dry the area between your toes well.

• If the skin on your feet feels rough or dry, use lotion or oil. Do not use lotion between your toes.

HEALTHY FOOT HABITSAdherence to good foot care habits will go a long way toward keeping your feet healthy:•Antiseptic solutions can burn your

skin—so never use them on your feet without doctor supervision.

•Never use a heating pad, hot water bottle, or electric blanket on your feet.

•Avoid walking barefoot on hot pavement or sandy beaches.

•Protect your feet from heat and cold.•Never attempt to remove corns,

calluses, warts, or other foot lesions yourself. Don’t use chemical wart

removers, razor blades, corn plasters, or liquid corn or callus removers. See your doctor or podiatrist.

TOENAIL CAREIt is possible for people with diabetes to perform routine toenail care, but visual difficulty, nerve problems, or circulatory changes in the legs or feet can make this unsafe. If you do trim your toenails properly, you will avoid getting an ulcer or foot sore. Here are a few tips:•Trim your toenails after washing your

feet, when your nails are soft.•Cut straight across rather than in a

curved fashion to help prevent ingrown toenails. Don’t cut into the corners. Use an emery board to smooth the edges.

•Be careful not to cut toenails too short.•Have your toenails trimmed by a foot

doctor or another health care provider if you can’t see well, or if your nails are thick or yellowed.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FOOT PROBLEMSIt is important to recognize early warning signs of foot problems, such as:• burning, tingling, or painful feet• loss of sensation of heat, cold, or

touch• changes in color or shape of your feet• loss of hair on the toes, feet, and

lower legs• thickening and color change (yellow)

of the toenails• onset of blisters, sores, ulcers,

about cancer11 little known facts

Despite the prevalence of cancer, some information about this potentially deadly disease is not widely known. The following are some facts about cancer that may surprise you.

1. Cancer is officially known as “malignant neoplasm.”

2. Married people or those in steady relationships are more likely to survive cancer, which may be linked to couples’ increased concern and awareness of each other’s conditions and their push for cancer screenings.

3. Researchers believe that more than half of all cancers and cancer deaths are potentially preventable.

4. Most cancers develop through a combination of environmental factors and heredity.

5. Ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer are typically asymptomatic until they spread elsewhere in the body. That is why routine screenings for these diseases are so vital.

6. Those who sleep fewer than six hours a night are more likely to

develop colon cancer than those who sleep more.

7. Despite what is known about protecting oneself from the sun, skin cancer is still the most often diagnosed type of cancer, and rates continue to steadily increase.

8. The highest rate of people diagnosed with melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, are white men over the age of 50.

9. Men with a family history of breast cancer are at a higher risk for prostate cancer.

10. The left breast is statistically more prone to developing cancer than the right breast. Unfortunately, doctors and scientists are unsure why.

11. Women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent are significantly more likely to carry breast cancer genes than the general population.

nerve damage and circulation problems that damage your feet. Left unnoticed or untreated, sores, ingrown toenails, and other problems can lead to infection. Infections that do not heal can cause skin and tissue to die (gangrene). The dead tissue turns black. Treatment can involve surgery to remove a toe, foot, or part of a leg (amputation).

VISITING THE DOCTORA doctor should examine your feet at every visit and do a thorough foot exam once a year. If you have a history of foot problems,

you should be checked more often. Your health care provider should also give you information on foot care and answer all your questions. Report any corns, calluses, sores, cuts, bruises, infections, or foot pain.If necessary, your doctor can recommend a podiatrist who specializes in diabetic foot care or give you information about special shoes that may help.

Remember: Diabetes-related foot problems can worsen very quickly and are difficult to treat, so it is important to seek prompt medical attention.

Apples: Apples definitely qualify as a superfood, helping reduce cholesterol by preventing plaque buildup in the blood vessels and, as a result cutting an individual’s risk of diabetes considerably. In fact, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that eating at least two servings of apples per week can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent. Apples also make for a great source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C.

Men and women must alter their diets as they age. Portion sizes that young adults

might have been able to get away must shrink when those same men and women enter their 30s. And as thirty-somethings head into their 40s, what’s on the plate requires more careful consideration than it might have a decade ago. The same goes for men and women over 50, who must take steps to reduce their risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. One of the easiest ways to do just that is to eat healthy foods. The following are five flavorful and healthy foods tailor-made for the over 50 crowd.

Blueberries: Blueberries help men and women maintain healthy blood sugar levels because they are high in soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol while slowing the body’s uptake of glucose. And despite their relatively small size, blueberries contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals per ounce than any other fruit.

Broccoli: Though broccoli might not have been your best friend during childhood, you may want to cozy up to this powerful green vegetable now that you have cracked the half-century mark. Broccoli is loaded with vitamin C. A single 3.5 ounce serving of broccoli contains more than 150 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which can shorten the duration of the common cold. A similar study from researchers at New York’s Roswell Park Cancer Institute published in the same publication six years earlier found that just three servings of broccoli per month can decrease bladder cancer risk by as much as 40 percent.

Fava beans: Fava beans are cholesterol-free and low in fat. Fava beans also may provide cardiovascular benefits and help men and women maintain healthy weights. Fava beans are considered “nutrient-dense,” a term used to describe low-calorie foods that boast lots of nutrients, and are an excellent source of vitamin B1, which is important for nervous system function and energy metabolism.

Oatmeal: Another food that might never make youngsters’ lists of their favorite foods, oatmeal is nonetheless a healthy option at the breakfast table. Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which can reduce cholesterol levels and subsequently reduce a person’s risk of heart disease. Also low in calories, oatmeal can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. Those who find oatmeal a tad too bland for their tastes can double on their superfoods by adding some blueberries into the mix, making their breakfast more flavorful and more healthy.

Researchers from Stanford University concluded that women feel pain more intensely than men, and they said that while tough-guy stereotypes may account for some of the differences, another explanation could have to do with hormones. Previous studies have shown that high levels of estrogen can trigger the brain’s natural painkiller system, dampening the “ouch” signals. But when estrogen levels drop during certain parts of the menstrual cycle or after giving birth, the system is thrown off, so women will have a more intense physical response to whatever’s ailing them at that time.

What kind of doctor is right for you? When you choose a doctor for yourself or a loved one, make sure to choose a primary care doctor you can trust. A primary care doctor can:

• Help you make important decisions, like which screening tests and shots to get • Treat many health problems • Refer you to a specialist when you need more help with a specific health issue

When you are choosing a doctor, look for someone who:• Treats you with respect • Listens to your opinions and concerns

• Encourages you to ask questions • Explains things in ways you can understandYou can choose your doctor from a variety of specialties, depending on your health plan. Some require your

primary care physician to be an internist or family practitioner. All plans vary, so be sure to check. For instance, if you’re a woman, you might be able to choose an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN), who specializes in childbirth and diseases of the female organs. If you have children, they may need a pediatrician whose patients range from newborns to teenagers. Or you may prefer one doctor who can treat the whole family. A family practitioner, whose training involves a multi-year residency, will be responsible for your entire family’s health needs and will refer you to specialists as necessary.

No matter who you choose, there are some things you can do to help ensure the relationship between you and your physician is a good one: Be Honest and Ask Questions

When you and your doctor work together as a team, you’ll get better health care.
