2015 LOCAL CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT IN THE COMMUNITY

Basin PBS brings to families of the Permian Basin the types of thoughtful programs that expanded your mind as a child, the documentaries that opened up new worlds to you as a student (at any age or level), the non-commercialized PBS news programs that keep you informed on world events and cultures, and the exposure right in your own living room to the worlds of music, theater, dance and art as an adult.

Education and media, that’s exactly what Basin PBS is. We are MORE than television. That is just one mode of delivery. BASIN PBS is really about education and ideas. Not only can we broadcast into every living room, we can be inside every traditional or non-traditionalclassroom and on any device... we make learning accessible and fun for everyone, everywhere!

Basin PBS proves its value daily by providing thought provoking national programs combined with local and regional content both on-air and through social media. Together, our content and public service projects aid our fellow nonprofits in achieving their goals and allow us to impact our viewer’s lives from the classroom to the oilfield.

In 2015, Basin PBS partnered with Hospice of Midland to begin a Veterans initiative. Our first project was a screening of the Ric Burns film, Debt of Honor. This was complete with welcome reception, panel discussion and fallen comrades ceremony. We continued our tradition of partnering with our historical Museum of the Southwest Children’s Museum for Familiy Fridays where Basin PBS once again kicked-off their summer of learning with a science focused day of fun.

Basin PBS also continued its tradition of Explore the Outdoors. In 2015 we partnered with the I-20 Wildlife Preserve and Sibley Nature Center for an experience unlike any other. Children and their families were able to take part in nature tours with specialized guides to view and learn first hand about West Texas wildlife and it’s environment along with a variety of activities to keep little hands busy and young minds learning.

Basin PBS is also a producing partner with ITVS for Indie Lens Pop-up, (formerly Community Cinema) again this year. In our second year, this initiative has proven to be an amazing growth experience for all involved from community to staff.

In December 2015, the station hosted it’s third and final Downton Abbey inspired event, Christmas Inspired by Downton Abbey. This was by far our best year for this event from community participation to dollars earned.

Basin PBS also began researching funding for 3 in-house productions highlighting community artists, news and local concerns and the local homeless student population.

2015 LOCAL CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT STORIES OF IMPACT

Basin PBS partnered with Hospice of Midland to create a local Veterans initiative. Together with Midland College and the Midland Vet Center we created our first event centered around the Ric Burns film, Debt of Honor. Offering local Veterans and their families an outlet to connect with other Veterans as well as local organizations they may not have made contact with yet. This initiative also opens a door for civilians to educate themselves on Veteran’s issues and how they can help within our community.

In 2015, Basin PBS brought kids and families together for multiple learning centric events and for some just for fun! We continued our traditions with Family Friday partnering with the historic Museum of the Southwests Children’s Museum kicking off the summer learning with a day of science! We also brought children from all over the Permian Basin together for Water Moves, the outdoor game centered around problem solving and engineering with help from community partner, University of Texas Permian Basin STEM Academy. Fun was had by all when we declared November 2 to be COOKIE MONSTER DAY in the Permian Basin. We celebrated in multiple cities with city officals reading an official proclamation followed by story time and other activities and of course, cookies!

During the past few years, West Texas has been plagued by a drought. Basin PBS produced a program that spoke directly to this issue and what it means for West Texans. The premiere screening of Treading West Texas Waters, was held in partnership with Sibley Nature Center complete with a Q&A with film makers, Chris Hillen and Joseph Cashiola. There have been multiple screenings in various areas of West Texas to shed light on what happens as demands increase, if the drought intensifies and how we continue to inhabit this area of our country.

2015 LOCAL CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT STORIES OF IMPACT

Basin PBS, for the second year, is a producing partner participating in ITVS’s Indie Lens Pop-Up (formerly Community Cinema). This community-driven conversation piece has allowed the station to reach into the community like no other event. The station is able to connect with different groups within, not just one but multiple neighborhoods and groups, as well as a variety of community partners that we would not have necessarily connected with.

Indie Lens Pop-Up helps the station reach out and offer safe conversation about topcis that would otherwise not be discussed in most cases from sex trafficing to LGBT rights. By forming educated panels for each screening event, and chosing a proper location based on the topic, Basin PBS offers a welcoming and safe environment for everyone, making conversation a bit easier. Attendees range from low to upper income as well as all ethicities, backgrounds and genders.

Each screening event is carefully planned so that community members and community partners can gain as much insight into the topic at hand as possible. Not only do we try to give educational information for each topic, but we also offer local organizations as resources to those who attend for additional information or support. Basin PBS is proud to offer Indie Lens Pop-Up to our Permian Basin communities and looks forward to years of partnership with ITVS going forward.

“ Community Cinema/Indie Lens Pop-Up is such an amazing opportunity for the Permian Basin to expand their horizons and find passion outside of what they may see in their normal everyday. It allows the community to learn about global problems and sit-uations, and how they may affect the Midland/Odessa area. Through Basin PBS’s efforts, the pairing of film and local panelists these issues become real and much more vivid as opposed to just some story on the news.” - Chris Stonedale - Resource Development Director, Boys & Girls Club of Midland and the Permian Basin
