Welcome to our sixth-annual festivalFrom our president: On behalf of the Friends of the San Jacinto Mountain County Parks (FSJMCP) and our co-sponsors, the Idyllwild Garden Club, we welcome you to the Sixth Annual Lemon Lily Festival. The festival is intended to provide joy, fun, listening pleasure and education for our visitors. The festival is, of course, dedicated to one of our indige-nous flowers, the lemon lily, Lilium parryi. The mission of the Lemon Lily Planning Group (Sandy Tatich, Jyoti Kintz, Scott Fisher, Ann Wehn, and Gail Spiegel) is to foster an appreciation for the threatened native lily (Lilium parryl), educate the public of its plight and relevance to Idyllwild, restore it to its historical range and benefit Idyllwild economically by promoting it as a visitor destination. We hope you succeed and hope you enjoy the festival. The San Jacinto Mountain County Parks are managed by the Riverside County Parks and Open-Space District. They include the Nature Center, Idyllwild County Park, Pine Cove Park, Hurkey Creek Campgrounds, McCall Memorial Equestrian Campground and Lawler Lodge. Friends of the San Jacinto Mountain County Parks is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to assist, promote, advance and develop the historical, scientific, educational and cultural aspects pertaining to San Jacinto Mountain County Parks. FSJMCP is guided by a board of directors that typically meets monthly and guides its affairs. Membership is open to everyone. For more information contact the staff or volunteers at the Nature Center, located at 25225 Hwy. 243, Idyllwild or visit our website at www.idyllwildnaturecenterfriends.org.

Developing more enter-tainment and special vendors to celebrate the Lemon Lily, our fifth festival concentrates even more on the education and restoration aspects. This year features two days of speakers covering multiple subjects relevant to mountain ecology and conser-vation. The Nature Center contin-ues to work in partnership with the Idyllwild Garden Club to provide educational oppor-tunities for Idyllwild school students and local residents. Currently, weekend volunteers learn about invasive non-na-tive species while removing threatening plant life along the creek in Idyllwild County Park Campground. Working with the Idyllwild School Garden Club, young gardeners are given the chance to develop their skills while learning about our native flora and fauna. The Thursday evening Lemon Lily Launch and Taste of Idyllwild fundraising event features live music and drinks, with an assortment of Idyllwilds restaurants offer-

ing samplings of their cuisine. Tickets for this combination of popular events are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Purchase advance tickets at the Idyllwild Nature Center, 25225 Highway 243, on Monday and Tuesday, July 6 and 7 in front of the Post Office or call (951) 659-3850 to make reservations.

SATURDAY presents a full day of activities at the Nature Center. Pioneer Town continues to be popular with both children and adults, offering the opportunity to learn what life was like during a time when the Lemon Lily was prolific in Idyllwild. The Pennyroyal Players, a group of women who convey the settlers experience in the American West through letters and song, will educate and entertain. Pony rides, doll and rope-making will round out the experience. Vendors, specifically selected to enhance the festival, are featured adjacent to the Nature Center, offering perfect memories of the weekend. Nature walks and talks are featured throughout the

day, educating visitors on the plight of the Lemon Lily and other environmental issues in our San Jacinto Mountains. If Mother Nature cooperates, visitors will have the opportu-nity to see the Lily in bloom on both specimen plants and in its natural habitat.

SUNDAY, most of Satur-days events will be repeated at the Nature Center, culmi-nating in a 3 p.m. drawing for this years original artwork by Dore Capitani (featured on the cover of this program) and silent auction items. As a way to enjoy all the excitement, we encourage visitors to park their vehicles in the center of town and ride the convenient shuttle. Let us do the driving so you can enjoy the festival. We welcome everyone to this years sixth-annual Lemon Lily Festival and hope you will enjoy the experience as much as we enjoyed putting it together! Garden club supports lemon lily restoration

    By Neill Bell

When it comes to getting things in the ground, you can count on the Idyllwild Garden Club to do it. With more than 100 members, IGC has been a strong supporter of restoring Lilium parryi to its native San Jacinto Mountains. Our local garden club has been involved in several ways. IGC was a founding sponsor of the Lemon Lily Festival and has given financial assistance since the beginning. The festival has proven to be a great way to educate the public about lemon lilies, in particular, and native mountain plants in general. Club members volunteer at the festival, but more importantly have been key workers in restoration efforts. There is still a lot that we dont know about lemon lilies, how best to propagate them and where and when they can grow. Yes, we know that they like high elevations (the Idyllwild communi-ties are in the lower limit of their range) and as important, that they thrive only in stream-side environ-

ments. We are still learning a great deal about where and how to plant lily bulbs so we may return these lilies to areas where they have been disturbed by human activity. So, you will find Idyllwild Garden Club members actively planting bulbs in big pots, replanting them along the banks of Lily Creek the stream that runs through the Nature Center and County Park Campground and monitoring them to see how they are doing. If you are interested in IGC and its activities, or would like to become a member, we invite you to visit www.idyllwildgardenclub.net. Well be happy to see you, with or without a trowel in hand!

Back for a third year, the Lemon Lily Festi-vals, A Little Bluegrass features bluegrass and country/western musicians performing throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday. Of course, the festival would not be complete without repeating its other successes from the years guided, botanist-led walking tours and hikes, opportunities to view Lemon Lilies growing along local stream beds, Pioneer Town arts and crafts, and a Thursday evening, July 9, Lemon Lily Launch and Taste of Idyllwild (a combined kick-off fundraiser) featuring food and treats from local restaurants and music set at the Nature Center. More information about all of these events and the festival may be found online at www.lemonlilyfestival.com.

For the kids Our popular Pioneer Town will be part of the festival events at the Idyllwild Nature Center. A highlight again this year is performances by

the Pennyroyal Players (www.pennyroyalplayers.org). The group travels from Vermont to Califor-nia, bringing lively and touching musical portraits about those who settled the American West. Through story and song, Piecin It Together reveals the humor and hardships of the pioneering life endured by men, women and children.

Also returning this year is the ever-popular pony rides for the kids, shooting gallery, working black-smith, gold panning, horseshoe toss, apple peeling, old-fashioned wash tub laundry and childrens crafts, including origami.

Lemon Lily or Parrys Lily, Lilium parryi, is named in honor of Dr. Charles Christopher Parry, a renowned botanist who was among the first to collect it in the summer of 1876. Lilium parryi of the Family Lilia-ceae is a perennial herb that grows from a bulb with a stem reaching a height of 1.9 meters. It has scattered

or whorled leaves with very fragrant lemon-yellow, funnel-shaped flowers. In Southern California it grows in the San Gabriel, San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains, as well as Palomar Mountain. Small populations can also be found in southeastern Arizona in the Santa Rita, Huachuca and Chiricahua

mountains and in extreme northern Sonora, Mexico, in the Sierra Los Ajos. The lilies inhabit springs, seeps, wet meadows and shady canyon bottoms along perennial streams at an elevation of 4,000 to 9,000 feet. Forest fires and subsequent erosion have severely impacted three populations in Arizona (Falk and Warren, 1994), and their populations have been negatively impacted by flower pullers in Palomar (Craig H.

Reiser, 1994) and bulb collectors in San Jacinto (H.M. Hall, 1902). It is uncommon throughout its California range, close to extirpation in San Diego County (Craig H. Reiser, 1994) and listed by state and federal agencies as a sensitive species that should be protected. For more information about the Lemon Lily, visit Michael Charters site at www.calflora.net/blooming-plants/lemonlily.html.

Welcome Attendees to the 6th Annual Lemon Lily Festival!

Plants in nature dont appear to multiply by bulb; the extent of vegetative reproduction is unknown. However, in culture, scales from the bulb can be removed and placed in a special soil mix to grow into individual bulbs. This is how nurseries from out of the area (in Oregon) produce Lemon Lilies that are available for purchase. Tissue culture is another way that seems to be successful as well. But its hard to cut up even one bulb to do this. Lily enthusiasts world-wide know about the Lemon Lily; it has been used extensively in breeding programs to produce some of the most beautiful garden cultivars. At least three lily hybrids have been developed by crossing the Lemon Lily with other kinds of lilies and then reproducing them by the methods mentioned; one is San Gabriel. This may be the way to direct our low-land lily lovers to plants that will grow in valley gardens and are at least part Lemon Lily. Genetically variable populations in the wild are

By Kate KramerBotanist, san Jacinto ranger District

The Lemon Lily, one of our most spectacular local wildflowers, is rare and uncommon but not on the endangered species list. This 3- to 5-foot plant with large showy yellow flowers and whorled leaves is found in mountain creeks from 5,000 to 9,000 feet in our Southern California mountains with a few maybe two populations in the mountains of Southern Arizona as well. Today, this is where the lily is found, in scattered groups in the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains. Moist habitats are key. Lily seeds need to be moist and cool to germinate and grow in the following year. Seeds develop into scaly bulbs about an inch in diame-ter. When the bulb has accumulated enough energy, in three to five years it will produce a flowering stalk with one to nine or more fragrant yellow flowers.

Natural history of our Lemon Lilyimportant for Lemon Lilies to persist; lilies must have a pollinator to produce seed. Available infor-mation suggests that sphinx moths (Hyles lineata and Sphinx perelegans) are the main pollinators. It makes sense; the Lemon Lily flowers are the most fragrant at dusk when moths would be flying. We really need to do a Lemon Lily stake-out and watch plants for a day and late evening to find out who is visiting our lilies here. In one of the earliest floras of the San Jacinto Mountains, an observation was made of the incredible collecting pressures by admirers trying to get the Lemon Lily in the nursery trade. With so many bulbs removed from our mountains, its no wonder that the Lemon Lily is a rare plant. The drought in the 1970s may have dried up much of the lilys habitat, as well; fluctuating water levels have affected lily populations in Arizona.

    Think Gnome!

    By Dave Stithamateur BotaniSt

Harvey Monroe Hall conducted the first systematic survey of the plants in the San Jacintos. His flora, A Botanical Survey of San Jacinto Mountain was published in 1902. Of Lilium parryi he writes: This lily, with its tall, erect stems and conspicuous flowers either clear yellow or peppered with black, is a great favorite with the tourists and campers who annually visit the mountain. It was only a few years ago that the showy blossoms were very frequently encountered with along all the streams and bogs from nearly the lower edge of the Transition Zone up to an altitude

Why restore the lemon lily to Idyllwild?of 9,000 feet, thus reaching into the lower part of the Canadian Zone. While it is now by no means rare, [it] is still only found in profusion only on the more remote parts of the mountain. That this is due entirely to the diligence of the bulb hunters is hard to believe, and yet one party took over 5,000 bulbs in a single season. Perhaps this, in addition to several consec-utive dry summers, is responsible for the rapid depletion in their

numbers. From this we can learn three things: 1) They were once much more abundant than they are now; 2) the tourists who visited the mountain knew of them and; 3) thousands of them were dug up and

forever removed from the mountain. I wanted to see if it was still true that they could be found in profusion on the more remote parts of the mountain, or if conditions were now such that there was no hope of ever bringing them back. In 2009, I enlisted Tom Chester, along with some of our friends and colleagues, to help me count every Lemon Lily in Willow and Tahquitz creeks. We counted 2,662 plants, including new seedlings, immature plants that had not yet bloomed, flower-ing plants and plants in fruit with seeds. This appeared to be a healthy, reproducing population. If they can still grow where they have not been disturbed by people, I began to ask, Why not in Idyllwild? if we just give them a chance.

Hold onto your hats and tune up your ears, the Pennyroyal Play-ers are coming to the 2015 Lemon Lily Festival. This talented group of six women entertained audiences last year with their performance of Piecin It Together. Piecin It Together uses story-telling and song to present portraits of people who settled the American West. Their experiences reveal some of the hardships, triumphs and humor that was part of the pioneering life in the 18th and 19th centuries. The six talented women who perform Piecin use song and stories within a framework of quilting, intro-ducing us to people who were part of the frontier and immigrant experience.

This Pennyroyal production was inspired by the musical play Quilters, but the music is dif-ferent. Im a folksinger from the 1960s, so I had to use traditional songs and folk music that was around in that period, says director Anne Destabelle, who created this show when she founded the group in 2005. Even if you were one of the lucky people who caught one or

more of Pennyroyals four performances at last years Lemon Lily Festival, it wont be the same this July. The script continues to evolve, says Destabelle. The groups repertoire has also grown over the years and now includes Romp Through the American Revolution and Songs and Stories of Stephen Foster.

Pennyroyal Players return Thats All Folk Thats All Folk is a vocal group from Idyllwild Ca. Theyve all been in the music industry for many moons and have put together a well-rehearsed tribute to some of our favorite folk/rock artists from the 60s, 70s and more. Their music is heartfelt with beautiful 3-part harmony. They are: Elaine Balkman, Bill Sheppard, John King, Lee Miracle and guest percussionist Craig Wills. Enjoy!

Three for Joy Three for Joy is a Celtic music and Irish dance band made up of siblings: Angela Rose (8 years old), Joseph (9), and Dominic (11) Padula. With their fiddles, cello and mandolin, this lively and accomplished group plays traditional Celtic tunesScottish, Irish and Cape Bretonwhile weaving Irish dancing into their music. These children have had the good fortune to hear a lot of traditional fiddle music from the beginning of their lives, listening to and learning from their cousins, the Wood family, who make up the phenom-enal fiddle and dance band Celtic Spring. Besides learning from their cousins, Three for Joy members also attend fiddle camps, where they are immersed in traditional music and learn from some of the best fiddlers in the world. In August, Three for Joy members will be attending Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School for the third time. In addition, they are very excited to be attending The Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina for the first time, for which they received full scholarships.
