Morning Keynote Address: Deanna Davis, PhD

The Start of Something Really Small: How Small Steps Lead to Big Results and Better OutcomesWe often think that creating positive changes – for ourselves, our organizations, and our communities – will be an enormous and stressful endeavor. What if instead of focusing on “the bigness” of it all, we embraced “the big power of small”? What if by choosing small ways of thinking and acting differently we could make success more certain and change less challenging?

In her keynote address, Deanna Davis will answer these questions by unpacking small, methodical changes you can make to set the stage for long-term success. You will learn how the practice of taking small steps can disable the fear, stress, and resistance responses that undermine good intentions and overwhelm good people. You will walk away with simple, powerful, practical tools to advance your mission and work without sacrificing your well-being. And you’ll learn how “the next big thing” in supporting the greater good may very well be “the start of something small.”

Open Space ConversationsOpen Space conversations are a one-hour discussion with your peers on a topic that is important to you. We asked you to tell us what you are most interested in talking about or advancing your thinking on, and we compiled a list of table topics based on your responses.

Within the Session Listings on pages 6 and 7 of this program, the discussion topics are listed with the corresponding room where they will be hosted. Please choose a topic that interests you and head to that room.

A facilitator will help guide the conversation. You will walk away from this session having had a deep conversation with others about a shared topic of interest. This is a great opportunity to exchange cards with colleagues and continue the discussion after the conference ends.

Meet Our PanelistsBen Stuckart, Spokane City Council PresidentBen is currently in his fourth year as Spokane City Council President. Prior to political life, Ben founded Communities in Schools of Spokane County, an organization that started with nothing and is now a half-million-dollar agency annually. Ben serves on numerous local nonprofit and community boards and continues to be a visionary leader for the sector as a whole.

Melanie Gillespie, Executive Director, Foundation for Healthy GenerationsFor the past two decades, Melanie has been a leader in Washington State’s nonprofit and public sectors, serving the needs of our communities’ most vulnerable individuals and families. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Foundation for Healthy Generations and has served on numerous local, regional, and state boards and nonprofit/public funder advisory groups over the years.

Regina Malveaux, Executive Director, YWCA of SpokaneRegina is recognized as a tenacious advocate for women, youth, and children. She has served as the Executive Director of the YWCA of Spokane for the past two years. Regina previously served as the executive director of the YWCA South Hampton Roads in Norfolk, Virginia and as a legal advocate for the YWCA of San Diego. She has served on numerous boards aimed at advancing racial justice and economic empowerment.

Meet Our ModeratorJohn Traynor, PhD, Assistant Professor, Gonzaga UniversityJohn is an Assistant Professor at Gonzaga University in the Department of Teacher Education where he specializes in the Foundations of Education, Teaching in the Middle School, and Jesuit Education. He serves on Spokane County United Way’s board and is a member of THEZONE and Excelerate Success, two local collective impact efforts. Prior to teaching at Gonzaga, John taught for nine years as a high school social studies teacher.

What are the basics for building a solid volunteer engagement effort for your organizations? In this workshop, we’ll explore the “how” and “why” of effective volunteer engagement, gain a better understanding of the essential elements and infrastructure required to support your organization’s volunteer involvement efforts, and identify simple steps you can take to strengthen your volunteer program.Speaker: Barbara Bush

Session 3 (1:30-2:45 pm)The Future of University-Community Partnerships: How Anchor Institutions are Emerging as New Partners in Our CommunitiesUniversities have long upheld missions to engage with and support their surrounding communities. This session examines the university as an anchor institution to consider how nonprofits and other organizations can approach universities as partners, how a university’s “place-based” work differs from conventional outreach of the past, and how partnerships with anchor institutions can leverage new resources and bring new energy to work in the community. Participants will learn about the unique features of anchor institutions and their “place-based” work, examine case studies of university-community partnerships from across the United States, and then develop their own ideas for research or other shared work with a university as partner.Speakers: Ross Brooke Watts, PhD & Molly Ayers

Legal Rules and Requirements for NonprofitsThis workshop will cover legal compliance requirements for nonprofits and 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. All nonprofits and tax-exemption organizations have legal requirements that they need to meet on an ongoing basis, including filing reports and registering with state and federal government agencies. All nonprofit board members and nonprofit management should be aware of these legal requirements. It expands what board and staff members know and can do related to nonprofit finance through BINGO cards, video shorts featuring a Jet City Improv actor, and supporting informational kits. Performance for Nonprofits: Data to Back Your StoryDo you think you need an external evaluator to show your work is making a difference? This workshop will walk participants through a simple six-step approach ANYONE

can use to identify performance measures. We’ll unpack the method introduced in Mark Friedman’s book Trying Hard Is Not Enough. This straightforward tool will help support your nonprofit’s story with the evidence (data) that shows your work is making a difference.Speaker: Stacy Wenzl

Technology for Nonprofits: 2015 and BeyondYou are trying to move forward your mission. Technology plays a key role in your ability to do almost everything, from tracking donors to providing good service to your clients. How do you stay on top of the hardware and software decisions you need to make with the budget you have? In “Technology for Nonprofits,” Bob Bailey will go over those technology basics including how to take advantage of free or low-cost technology available to nonprofits. He will talk “cloud” and what moving to the cloud entails. Come with your questions since a good portion of the workshop will be set aside to respond to what is on your mind when it comes to technology.Speaker: Bob Bailey

Preventing a Difficult Situation from Becoming a CrisisNonprofits face challenges daily, both internally and externally. With limited resources, it’s difcult to know where to start and what to do. In this interactive session, you’ll learn the steps to take to prevent a problematic internal or external situation from escalating into a major crisis. You’ll learn how to perform a Risk Analysis to identify your vulnerabilities and strategize through a real-life scenario to avoid potentially disastrous consequences. This must-see session is designed for nonprofits of all sizes and focuses.Speaker: Alice Kaderlan

Staying Up to Date with the Secretary of StateYour ability to raise funds and generally do business in Washington depends on staying compliant with the Washington Secretary of State and other local jurisdictions. Join Teresa and Patrick as they talk about the nonprofit start-up process (filing), as well as critical Ofce of the Secretary of State items like filing annual reports, making amendments, and filing statements of change. They will talk a little about reminders to contact local jurisdictions regarding sales tax and licensing requirements for nonprofit retailers and others that think they don’t have sales or B&O tax.Speakers: Teresa Glidden & Patrick Reed
