Page 2: 2015 - Hawaii Foodbank

A Note to You...Dear Friends,

It cannot be overstated: hunger is devastating.

The Hawaii Foodbank Board, Staff and Volunteers work tirelessly

to provide food for Hawaii’s hungry children, seniors and families.

Through our member agencies, we are feeding 287,000 individuals

statewide each year.

We are pleased to share the Hawaii Foodbank’s accomplishments in our

32nd year of serving the hungry in our community. In Fiscal Year 2015,

we distributed over 12.2 million pounds of food, which is the equivalent

of over 9.6 million meals.

With your continued commitment, we are working hard to help

mothers, fathers and children in our community who may go to bed

hungry. Thank you very much for helping feed islanders in need!

With your support, moving forward we will continue to work toward

our vision that no one goes hungry in Hawaii. We look forward

to joining forces with you in the fight against hunger in our island

community.

Mahalo for your support!

Linda Chu Takayama Dick Grimm

Chair President & CEO

“The people of Hawaii are one ohana. The Hawaii Foodbank provides food so that no one in our family goes hungry. We work to gather food and support from our communities. We then distribute food through charitable agencies to those in need. Our mission is from the heart, and we will fulfill our mission with integrity, humanity and aloha.”

Donations & DistributionWhere does the food come from? The Hawaii Foodbank on Oahu and Kauai received over 14.3 million pounds of perishable and nonperishable food in fiscal year 2015. Mahalo to the generous support of food industry donors, as well as company and community food drives throughout the year.

Of the food received, nearly 2.8 million pounds were purchased, thanks to your monetary donations and grant funding. Additionally, Hawaii Foodbank committed a portion of our annual operating budget for food purchase. Your financial support helped purchase containers of potatoes, onions, apples, pears and rice, as well as cans of beef stew, spaghetti, chili, luncheon meat and tuna.

Where does the food go?The Hawaii Foodbank on Oahu and Kauai distributed over 12.2 million pounds of food from our warehouses in Mapunapuna, Oahu and Puhi Industrial Park, Lihue, Kauai.

The Foodbank partnered with over 200 member agencies last year. Dedicated agency staff and volunteers assembled and distributed food bags, prepared and served meals and organized community-wide food distributions across Oahu. Their compassion and hard work with islanders in need, helped distribute millions of pounds of food last year.

We also shipped 171,647 pounds of food to Partner Distribution Organizations, the Maui Food Bank and The Food Basket on the Big Island.

Ohana ProgramsOver the last 18 years, the Hawaii Foodbank and our member agencies have distributed millions of pounds of fresh produce and food to underserved communities on Oahu through the Ohana Produce Plus Program. Donated and purchased food is distributed to low-income families, the elderly, disabled, the homeless and the working poor in communities island-wide.

Last year, the Foodbank worked with 29 member agencies to distribute over 3.6 million pounds of fresh produce and nearly 3.2 million pounds of baked goods, dairy products, eggs, cereal, snack foods and beverages.

Ohana community food distribution sites distribute food to an average of 16,646 people per month and help feed even more people, each person receiving food for a household of two or more members. For many families, the Ohana Produce Plus Program is their only source of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Last year, the Ohana Produce Plus Program served 21 communities on Oahu through 29 member agencies.

Keiki Programs

Food 4 Keiki BackPack ProgramFrom October 2014 through May 2015, over 400 students from low-income families at Princess Victoria Ka`iulani Elementary School in Kalihi received food through the Food 4 Keiki BackPack Program.

Once a week, students who qualified for the free or reduced school lunch program, received backpacks filled with nutritious and easy-to-prepare foods to take home over the weekend. Backpacks were packed with pasta meals, soups, cereals, fruit, apple sauce and pudding cups, snacks, chocolate milk and fruit juice.

The Foodbank distributed 13,440 BackPacks through the Food 4 Keiki BackPack Program during the 2014-2015 school year.

Mahalo to our program donors who helped purchase food and backpacks to provide meals to children at risk of hunger. And thank you to our volunteer groups who donated their time and effort. They truly gave from their hearts to prepack the food throughout the school year.

Feeding Our FutureThe Sodexo Foundation and the Hawaii Foodbank have partnered over the past 11 years to organize Feeding Our Future, a summer lunch program for children at risk of hunger.

Each year, the Sodexo Foundation purchases approximately $25,000 of food for the program. The food is stored at the Sodexo facility, University of Hawaii at Manoa, where staff cooks hot meals for pick up by participating Foodbank agencies.

From June 9 through July 18, 2014:

Kupuna Programs

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition ProgramThe Hawaii Foodbank, in partnership with the State Office of Community Services and the United States Department of Agriculture/Food and Nutrition Service, organized the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program from June through October 2014.

The goal was to provide low-income seniors with fresh fruits and vegetables, increase awareness of the benefits of healthy, well-balanced diets and stimulate Hawaii’s economy through local farmers markets.

People who benefitted from this program were Hawaii residents:

• 60 years or older• At or below 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Hawaii• Disabled individuals 60 years and under

The Foodbank and partners provided:

Mahalo to our agencies for their help in certifying the elderly and disabled and providing language interpreters to explain the process throughout.

Commodity Supplemental Food ProgramThe Hawaii Foodbank is proud to announce the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) beginning April 2015 otherwise known as the “Senior Food Box Program”.

Our goal is to provide 2,400 seniors with supplemental foods such as non-fat dry milk and/or UHT milk, cereal, juice, peanut butter, rice, canned meat, fruits and vegetables. Seniors must be a Hawaii resident at least 60 years of age and have an monthly household income of less than $1,467 for a single or $1,985 for a couple. Verification of age and residency will be required to certify seniors who in turn, will receive a box of food monthly.

From April to June 2015:

Geri O’Leary of Sts. Peter and Paul Church says, “we feel privileged to assist the Hawaii Foodbank with the Senior Food Box Program. It is a great service to our seniors and they have vigorously expressed their gratitude for the extra monthly food. Thank you, Hawaii Foodbank!”

Over the last decade, proceeds from the Hawaii Foodbank Golf Classic have provided over a million meals for Hawaii’s children, seniors, and families in need.

The beautiful Hawaii Prince Golf Club welcomed 48 teams to the 11th Annual Hawaii Foodbank Golf Classic. It was a day of friendly competition to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank and help feed the hungry.

The Hawaii Foodbank 11th Annual Golf Classic raised funds enough to provide food for over 85,000 meals thanks to the commitment and dedication of the 2015 Hawaii Foodbank Hospitality Coalition. A very big Mahalo to our Eagle Sponsor HMSA, and to our Birdie sponsors First Hawaiian Bank, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Horizon Lines and Meadow Gold Dairies.

Kraft Foods in Hawaii sponsors this annual holiday campaign held during the months of November, December and January. Participating stores include: Times Supermarkets and Safeway statewide; Don Quijote Honolulu, Pearl City, and Waipahu; Tamura’s Market Hau’ula, Kalaeloa and Wahiawa; Tamura’s Fine Wine & Liquors on Oahu and Maui, Tamura Super Market in Waianae, KTA Super Stores and ChoiceMART on the Big Island and Big Save Markets on Kauai.

Last year, retailers and their customers raised funds to provide food for over 645,000 meals to help feed Hawaii’s children, seniors and low-income families.

Mahalo to our store partners and their loyal customers for raising much needed funds to help islanders in need.

Your gift helped agencies distribute over 12 million

pounds of food to the needy in Hawaii this year.

806 Walkers representing Hawaii Foodbank agencies gathered at the Mayor Frank F. Fasi Civic Center for the 10th Annual Hunger Walk sponsored by the Harry C. & Nee Chang C. Wong Foundation. The Hunger Walk is an annual fundraising campaign for agencies to build financial and community support to help restock pantries with Foodbank food to feed the needy.

Last year, agencies fundraised to provide food for over 298,000 meals, exceeding the goal of 250,000 meals.

Mahalo to all who made donations of dollars or volunteered time and effort to support their nonprofit organization of choice.

Foodbanking has changed dramatically in the last ten years. In 2004, the Foodbank only had to purchase 1% of the food we distributed. For the last several years, we have had to purchase over 20% of the food distributed each year in order to keep up with the demand.

The RACK-A-THON Campaign to Fill Our Warehouse Shelves is an opportunity for our Sponsor Organizations to do just that. In its first year, 19 Sponsor Organizations raised funds to purchase food to provide over 445,000 meals for islanders in need. By participating in this initiative, these organizations know that 100% of every dollar contributed will be used to purchase, transport and distribute food to Hawaii’s hungry.

This food goes to help feed families and individuals who are finding it hard to make ends meet, seeking a job, securing housing or are dealing with overwhelming personal or medical challenges.

RACK-A-THON

Hunger Walk

RACK-A-THON donations will ensure food will flow into our warehouse and out to the people in Hawaii who need it the most.

Hawaii Foodbank challenged the people of Hawaii to raise food and dollars to provide ONE MILLION MEALS to islanders in need!

On Saturday, May 9, 2015, the National Association of Letter Carriers once again spread out across Hawaii to help provide assistance to islanders who are struggling with hunger.

The Food Drive effort is the state’s largest single-day drive. Last year, 533,449 pounds of food were collected, which brought the grand total of donations to more than 6.8 million pounds of food collected since 2000.

Mahalo to the National Association of Letter Carriers, Hawaii State Letter Carriers, United States Postal Service, event sponsors, trucking support, media and many, many volunteers for helping to make this Food Drive a success!

Hawaii Foodbank kicked-off the 26th Annual Food Drive in January with a Kickoff Breakfast, hosted at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballroom. The goal of the Kickoff Breakfast was to gather community and corporate support for the Hawaii Foodbank’s largest fundraising effort - the Annual Food Drive.

This year’s Annual Food Drive culminated on Saturday, April 18, 2015, with over 1,800 volunteers reporting for duty from Kaneohe to Waianae, to raise awareness of hunger in Hawaii and to collect food & funds for the Hawaii Foodbank 26th Annual Food Drive. Sign wavers and fish netters lined the streets, to collect food and dollars at our 10 official collection sites: Kapolei Commons, Koko Marina Center, McCully Shopping Center, Pearl City Shopping Center, Pearl Highlands Center, Town Center of Mililani, Waianae Mall Shopping Center, Waiokeola Congregational Church, Waterfront Plaza and Windward City Shopping Center.

Mahalo to all who contributed in their own way that day: drivers and passersby who donated food or dollars, vendors that donated services or goods, organizations that hosted a food drive and our valued volunteers who committed hours of service to help feed Hawaii’s hungry. We could not have done it without you. Thank you all for a successful 26th Annual Food Drive!

Annual Food Drive

National Association of Letter CarriersMore than 20 of Hawaii’s culinary masters gathered at the Hawaii Foodbank warehouse in Mapunapuna to do what they do best: feed our community.

Our guests tasted delicious samplings from Hawaii’s most talented culinary artists and drank fine wines, craft beers, special whiskeys and signature cocktails, all while enjoying live music and entertainment. They had the opportunity to bid on an exciting assortment of prizes in our silent auction, and one lucky group won a whole lot of wine at the famous Cellar Door!

A huge mahalo to our 2015 featured chefs, restaurants and beverage distributors for their time, talent and delectable dishes!

Safeway “Help Us End Hunger”In November 2014 we helped Safeway pack bags for their Help Us End Hunger Campaign. Safeway sold these bags of food for $10.00 and donated them to the Hawaii Foodbank-Kauai Branch. This campaign netted 9,559 pounds of food for the needy on Kauai.

Paying it ForwardA few years ago, we received a van from Sheraton Kauai Resort, with which, we have hauled thousands of pounds of food for our agencies over the years. Recently we were blessed with another donated vehicle from Sheraton Kauai Resort to replace the van. Since we are in the business of paying it forward, we’ve decided to pass on blessings to one of our hard-working agencies.

St. Catherine Food Pantry Celebrates 4th AnniversaryIn 2014, the St. Catherine Food Pantry celebrated their 4th anniversary serving the people from the Kawaihau District on the island of Kauai. Mark Whitson, pantry coordinator says that 90% of the food distributed comes from the Hawaii Foodbank - Kauai Branch. Each week, the St. Catherine Food Pantry picks up between 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of food. It is brought back to the Kapaa church where it is distributed each week. Congratulations on your success!

Partner Organizations The Hawaii Foodbank is the state’s only affiliate of Feeding America, the national Food Bank Network comprising over 200 food banks across the country. The Feed America affiliation is one we proudly share with the Hawaii Foodbank – Kauai Branch, the Maui Food Bank and The Food Basket, Inc., Hawaii island.

Grant-In-AidThe Hawaii Foodbank allocated $165,702.60 in Grant-In-Aid (GIA) funds to 73 member agencies on Oahu and Kauai. GIA funds provide financial assistance to member agencies to help purchase food for pantry distributions, feeding programs and shelter or residential meal services.

In addition to GIA, the Foodbank assists agencies by waiving fees entirely on select food distributed. Many agencies operate on limited budgets. At the same time, they must distribute food to the needy free of charge. By waiving Shared Maintenance Fees, the Foodbank helps agencies restock shelves with food so they may continue to serve the needy in their communities while realizing savings at the same time. Last year, the Foodbank distributed over 8 million pounds of food to agencies free of charge.

Mahalo to our supporters for granting GIA funds that enable Foodbank agencies to feed more people:
