Conference12 Mistakes Directors Make
This interactive session will focus on universal mistakes thatall Directors make in order to learn from them and plan for
future success! Attendees will participate in lively discussion
regarding hiring and retaining staff, increasing enrollment and
saving money, recognizing and preventing stress and burnout
as well as positive ways to take care of themselves in order to
effectively lead their programs. Each participant will have theopportunity to leave with at least 12 action steps that can be
condently implemented into their programs and into their
own lives right away.

Lena Vogt, Wichita Public Library, Alford BranchSession 3Will the children in your care be ready to learn how to read when you send them
off to school? There are six specic early literacy skills children need to learn before
they turn six. You can help children develop these skills by choosing certain books,
using specic techniques while reading with them, and offering language-based
activities during the day. Come learn more about the fun and easy things you cando help your children get ready to read.

Disaster Preparedness for the Home and Small Business

The rst 72 hours after a disaster are critical for surviving at home; for your business,
though, that’s just the beginning. Disaster Preparedness for Home and SmallBusinesses focuses on the basics that everyone needs to follow: build a kit, make a
plan, stay informed, and get involved. There also will be a discussion on continuityof operations planning for small businesses.

Session 3Learn a recipe for planning daily activities to build vocabulary and early literacy
skills. Experience hands-on activities, songs, and stories while learning about letters,

Kids in the Kitchen

This course will teach you ways to feel comfortable with working in the kitchen with
youth. In addition to condence, one will begin to learn how to encourage youthand providers to want to cook. There will be discussions on age appropriate tasks,
your plate, strategies for successful experience, while experiencing and practicing
recipes and teaching methods.
LETRS Early Childhood Professional Development Overview

Session 2
This workshop provides the bridge between research and practice. Its design
enriches and extends professional development for all care providers in helping
pre-kindergarten children learn the early literacy and language skills shown in
research to be critical for later literacy success. Also includes practical strategies tobuild these skills.
New Resources for Improving Nutrition and Activity in Child Care

Session 2
Kansas Action for Children, in partnership with Child Care Aware of Kansas, recently
released top priorities for improving the health of children in child care related
to nutrition, physical activity and screen time. This workshop will explore those
priorities, share best practices and lessons from providers, and connect participants
with new resources.

Record Keeping for Tax Purposes

Session 1
This workshop will help you understand the Family Child Care record keeping
process to ensure that you have the proper records for ling your taxes. Step by
step instructions for lling out the forms will be included. In addition, detailedinformation about child care liability insurance will be tackled in great detail.
Science of Music

Session 3
The science of sound is demonstrated by learning to change the pitch of
instruments. Music helps teach fractions, patterns, sequencing and pitch in a fun
and interactive environment. Making instruments out of everyday materials gives
children the opportunity to create their own sound.
The ABC’s of Developing Pre-School Literacy Skills

Session 1
This fun, hands-on, and interactive session is designed to introduce early childhood
educators to the current research related to developing pre-literacy and language
skills. Participants will engage in a conversation about how to best developphonological, letter identication, vocabulary and print awareness skills using a
pre-school child’s storybook.
The Period of Purple Crying - A New Way to Understand Your Baby’s Crying

Session 1
The Period of Purple Crying is an evidence-based prevention program offered by
the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. This program approached Abusive
Head Trauma, also known as Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), prevention by helping
parents and caregivers understand the frustrating features of crying in normalinfants that can lead to shaking or abuse
Work Does Not Need to be a “Four” Letter Word

Session 2
Persons will gain useful tools to motivate staff and volunteers as well as gain insight
into the positive attributes. There will be insight into how to encourage your staff
to be, “A Healthy Staff is a Happy Staff”. If you work with adults this workshop is a
must.

will be assigned classes based on this ranking and space availability. The earlier we receive your paid
registraon, the more likely it is you can have your top choice. (In the unlikely event there is no room for
you to aend any of your choices, we will call). If you would like conrmaon of your assigned classes
please include your email address on your conference registraon. Online registraons save money and
choose the exact class they will aend.

Lunch:
• A buet lunch is included in your registraon fees. If you are needing a vegitarian meal, please indicate

Early Bird Discount:
• Registraons postmarked aer the Early Bird cut o date (2/15/15) will not qualify for a discount and anybalance will be due at the me of check-in on the day of the conference. You will be sent an email detailing
if and why you owe an addional registraon fee.

• The cost for Growing with Children is reduced for those who have a current 2015 membership with Child
Start.
• The cost for Director’s Chair is reduced for those who have a current 2014-2015 membership with the Early
Childhood Director’s Organizaon.
• Child Start Professional Development credits do not apply to this conference.
