In the state’s highest classification, Wal-ton sits a match away from capturing the

program’s tenth state title. Standing in the Raiders’ way is South Forsyth, which has not faced Walton since the first match of the season. Walton took the season opener in a swift 3-0 sweep [25-13, 25-18, 25-13], but 41 South Forsyth wins later and a surg-ing War Eagles team looks to bring home the program’s first state title against the decorated Raiders. South Forsyth showed its resilience in the semifinals against Har-rison after dropping the opening set 25-14. They answered with a 25-21 second set vic-tory and then survived a 32-30 marathon in the third set. Harrison regained momentum in the fourth set [25-22] but South Forsyth clinched with a 15-11 fifth set. Senior Court-ney Darling had a huge impact and posted 53 of the team’s 56 assists.

FINALS REMATCH In Class AAAAA, defending state champion Sequoyah faces two-time state champion Columbus (2007, 2013). The two teams squared off on Aug. 22 and Columbus swept the Chiefs in two sets [25-22. 25-14]. Sequoyah, however, enters the champion-ship with plenty of confidence after a thrill-ing five set victory over Cambridge Wednes-day night. After beating Cambridge 2-1 on Aug. 27, the Chiefs dropped two October

the state and the junior notched her 500th kill of season against Mt. Pisgah in the opening round of the playoffs. Calvary Day outside hitter Claudia Chisolm and setter Hannah Carver earned spots on the All-Greater Savannah Volleyball First Team list as sophomores last year and have led the Cavaliers with the support from fellow ju-nior and defensive specialist Southern Britt. Middle blocker Sara Daniels is this year’s sophomore that stepped up for the Cava-liers and she carries 104 sets of experience this season into the finals as the team lead-er in blocks. matches to the Bears before the semis when they squared off for the fourth time this year. Cambridge had swept the Chiefs in the Area 7 tournament on Oct. 8 before winning a 3-1 match two days later for a top seed. Colum-bus cruised in its trip to the finals without dropping a set this postseason. Athletic powerhouse Buford has a chance to bring home the volleyball pro-gram’s first state title on Saturday against St. Pius, which captured its first volleyball state title in 2013. Buford has dominated this year’s competition and sits a flawless 40-0. Only four of the 40 wins have seen the Wolves drop a set, but one came in Buford’s 2-1 victory over the Golden Lions on Aug. 18. Buford opened this month with a trip to St. Pius, however, and swept the Golden Lions 3-0 [25-17, 25-18, 25-20]. Abbey Adams is the only senior on Buford’s roster as they look to establish another sports dynasty. St. Pius might have dropped both matches to Buford this season, but its [14-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19, 16-14] semifinal win over seven-time state champion Marist is the most impressive victory of their season. Defending Class AAA champion Blessed Trinity ended Oconee County’s sea-son for the sixth time since 2004 and the third time in the last four years with a semi-final sweep on Wednesday. The Titans await seven-time champion Westminster, which

looks for its first title since 2008. Blessed Trinity swept Westminster in last year’s state championship, but the teams have split this year’s two meetings. Blessed Trinity swept the Wildcats on Sept. 15, but West-minster scored its own sweep [25-19, 25-18, 25-9] when the programs squared off Oct. 8 in the Area 2 tournament. Westminster aced the Titans nine times and junior Maya Longacre had 32 assists to the Titans’ 16.

SEEKING THREE STRAIGHT Holy Innocents’ was the only team that successfully defended its state title last sea-son and the Golden Bears will look to make it a three-peat against 2012 state champion Lovett in the Class AA finals. Lovett opened the year with seven straight losses, but the gauntlet of quality opponents prepared the Lions as they beat two of those same opponents in this year’s playoffs and can make it a third with a win over Holy Innocents’. Junior Libby Lee is a 5-foot libero that leads a stout defense and junior Kirby Ellis and sophomore Ellie Mc-Collam have stepped up as the team’s pol-ished assist duo.

UNFAMILIAR FOES In Class A, three-time state champion Landmark Christian (2001, 2003, 2012) used a fourth set to topple star-powered Savannah Christian in the semifinals and set up a showdown with No. 1 seed Calvary Day, which beat Savannah Christian in five sets to win the Area 1 championship this month. Calvary Day swept Brookstone and Paideia and came off an Elite 8 bye to top Athens Academy in five sets. This is the only cham-pionship matchup that is not a rematch from the regular season. Landmark Christian’s Cameron Dobbs is one of the most lethal outside hitters in

Walton’s streak of four-straight state titles was snapped in the second round of last year’s playoffs

with a 3-1 loss to eventual state champion North Cobb, but a strong freshman class has the Raiders back to champi-onship form. Walton has not lost to a single instate oppo-nent this season and the emergence of 6-foot-3 freshman Gabby Gonzalez and three more ninth graders measur-ing 6-foot-1 gave head coach Suzanne Fitzgerald all the pieces she would need. Gonzalez is a force to be reckoned with and made her presence known in the Radiers’ sec-ond round sweep over Johns Creek with a season-high 23 kills off of 40 attempts. Freshman Riley Spurlin combines touch with her power to catch opponents off guard and find openings on the floor. The 6-foot-1 right side hitter re-corded a career-high 10 kills in Walton’s 2-0 sweep over South Forsyth to open the season and was handed player of the game. Senior libero Celeste Fitzgerald has already played a starting role for three state championship teams and is a Georgia State commit that has recorded more than 750 digs this season. Junior Dalaney Hans tallied her 950th assist of the season in the Raiders’ semifinal sweep over Etowah and senior Tai Bierria adds power and defense at 6-foot-1 as a versatile middle blocker or out-side hitter. South Forsyth is led by a deep group of up-perclassmen that includes 11 juniors and four seniors. Ju-nior Amanda Nugent is a team captain that leads the War Eagles in kills with over 1,500 attempts. Erin Yeatman has more than 1,100 digs this season and will be the key to answering Walton’s size with her defense and experience. Courtney Darling has paced the state in assists this year and averages 10.7 per set.

Columbus and Sequoyah meet in the championship for the second straight season after last year’s epic

five-set finish. Columbus led 2-1 before Sequoyah put together a 25-19 fourth set and clinched a 15-11 five set victory. Columbus graduated just two seniors from last year’s team, and returned with deep class of seniors, in-cluding 6-foot-3 middle blocker Shardonee Hayes. Hayes was first a basketball standout that began playing volley-ball as a freshman. She helped the Blue Devils capture the state title as a sophomore in 2013 and has become one of the top players in the country. The University of Arizona commit recorded her 500th kill of the season in the Blue Devils’ opening round sweep over Ola. Hayes entered this postseason with 100 total blocks this year. Madison Fleming will be the key to setting up Hayes and the Blue Devils’ powerful lineup and has over 1,100 assists on the season. Sequoyah has the size and talent at the net to challenge Columbus with 6-foot-2 middle blocker Kelley Hartman and outside hitter Lauren Hartman. Kelley, who is also a basketball standout, has averaged 4.4 kills per set. Like Hayes, Kelley entered the postseason with triple digit blocks. Lauren is a versatile piece to Sequoyah’s suc-cess and has more than 250 kills while leading the team in digs with 6.2 per set. Sequoyah has already faced ad-versity this postseason and survived a five-set battle with Cambridge in the semifinals. The Chiefs are a streaky team and fell behind 2-1 after a 25-12 third set loss. Se-quoyah rallied for a 28-26 fourth set win to stay alive and went the distance again in the fifth set 16-14. Columbus has won 17 consecutive matches and has not dropped a set in its last 10 outings.

Buford fell in five sets to Marist in last year’s state cham-pionship, but the emergence of the Wolves’ young

talent gave the program plenty of confidence that they were the team to beat in 2015. The Wolves have been perfect this season, compiling a 40-0 record and oblit-erating opponents with power and defense. Sophomore Tatum Shipes recorded her 350th kill in the opening set of Buford’s Elite 8 sweep over Walnut Grove. In the semi-nals, Shipes showcased the full skillset as she notched 15 kills, nine digs and five aces. Morgan Mitchell is the assist leader with just under nine per set. Junior Gabby Curry leads Buford’s excellent serving and averages more than one ace per set. Buford has aced opponents almost 400 times this season and has aced opponents just south of 17 percent of serves this season. Curry recorded five of the Wolves’ nine aces in Buford’s 3-0 sweep over St. Pius on Oct. 1. St. Pius head coach John Frederick has coached the Golden Lions back into the finals for the second time in three years. With four players standing 6-foot-1 or taller, St. Pius has the height to challenge Buford and the de-fense of 6-foot-3 junior Chloe Anderton could be the key to St. Pius stealing a victory. Anderton tallied a season-high 11 kills in the semifinal victory over Marist and added seven blocks to bring her season total to 132. Anderton was kept in check when St. Pius hosted Buford to open October, however and finished with just one kill on 13 at-tempts. Curry (23) and Morgan Mitchell (30) combined for 53 of Buford’s 85 digs the last time the two teams met and St. Pius will have to combine power and placement to find space in Buford’s line of defense.

Westminster has won seven volleyball state titles, but has not clinched a championship since 2008.

Last season, the Wildcats were one match away from ending the drought, but Blessed Trinity swept the finals for its fourth state title in program history and second in three years. On a team loaded with senior leadership, junior Morgan Stalcup spearheads the Titans’ net play as a defensive force. As a sophomore, Stalcup came up huge on the championship stage with six kills and four blocks and earned player of the match. Stalcup recorded the 150th block of her season on Wednesday as the Ti-tans swept their way past Oconee County. Seniors Sarah Parker (263), Remy Smith (211) and Olivia Dukat (198) are the team’s leaders in kills. Freshman Anna MacDon-ald has stepped up at libero this season with a team-high 673 digs. Senior Juliet Medley (656) and Caroline Cheney (588) lead Blessed Trinity in assists. Westminster has also blended its experience and youth this season and sophomore Gabi Dolan has stepped up as an effective outside hitter. Dolan recorded her 300th kill in Westmin-ster’s Elite 8 victory over Fannin County and served three aces, while compiling eight kills on 17 attempts in West-minster’s sweep over Blessed Trinity on Oct. 8. Senior Caroline Welsh can be used in a variety of roles and stars as a libero or outside hitter. Welsh leads the team in digs with 4.6 per set but played more of an outside hitter role when the Wildcats last faced Blessed Trinity this month. Welsh finished with a team-high nine kills in the victory and 10 of the team’s 62 digs. Sophomore Lexi Saulny fin-ished with 16 digs as Maya Longacre notched 32 assists.

Holy Innocents’ was the only school able to defend its state title last season and the Golden Bears achieved

the feat, despite making the jump into Class AA for the first time. Head coach Taylor Noland made history as the first coach to win a volleyball state title as a player and coach two seasons ago and leads a team filled with cham-pionship talent. Senior Sarah Porter entered Wednesday’s semifinals sweep over St. Vincent’s with 441 assists, 317 digs, and 301 kills for this season. She has over 3,000 as-sists for her career and will continue her volleyball career at Emory University next fall. Haley Collins has been a dif-ference maker in each of the last two state championship seasons and has more than 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs over her career. Collins entered Wednesday with 375 kills and 461 digs for this season. Porter (14) and Collins (11) com-bined for 25 of the Golden Bears’ 33 kills in their sweep over Lovett on Aug. 20. Porter aced the Lions seven times on 17 serves and added seven assists. Lovett’s 0-7 start to the season challenged the Lions, but now they ride a six-game winning streak into the finals and have played their best ball of the season. Lovett’s road to the finals was gru-eling as the Lions had to face Greater Atlanta Christian in the Elite 8 before traveling to Wesleyan in the semifinals. Outside hitter Lauren Ward will have to take advantage of any opportunities the Lions get against the outstand-ing defense and serving of the two-time defending state champs. Sophomores Maiya Moran and Zoe Williams have shared the role at middle blocker and it will require a collective effort as junior Kirby Ellis has her hands full as the Lions’ setter.

After falling to Hebron Christian in the second round of the state playoffs two consecutive years, Land-

mark Christian swept the Lions [25-23, 25-21, 25-15] in this year’s second round to return to the finals for the first time since 2012’s 3-1 victory over Walker. Seniors Alleigh Wettstein and Betsy Burson and the power of ju-nior Cameron Dobbs have led the War Eagles. Wettstein has 100 aces this season and is nearing in on 400 digs. Burson is the team’s setter and she has 1,100 assists this year. Burson posted a season-high 53 assists in the War Eagle’s 3-2 win over Eagle’s Landing Christian Oct. 8 with just one error. Calvary Day joins South Forsyth and Buford as the only other finalists that are playing for their pro-gram’s first state title this weekend. The Cavaliers have come a long way from 2012’s 15-30 finish and enter the championship 32-9 with competitive losses to finalists from the state’s top classifications. Junior Claudia Chi-solm and sophomore Sara Daniels have guided the Cava-liers with help from Hannah Carver, who has emerged as a gamechanger at setter. Carver dished out 47 assists in the Cavaliers’ five-set victory over Athens Academy on Wednesday. After dropping the first set 25-18, Calvary Day faced a 7-2 deficit to open the second set but ignited a 17-4 run that allowed the Cavs to even up the match with a 25-15 win in the second frame. Large runs kept the team’s even heading into the fifth set, but Calvary Day opened with an 11-4 lead and clinched the victory 15-7. Chisolm and Daniels finished with 21 and 16 kills, respec-tively, while dominating the net play in the final set. It took a complete team effort as Southern Britt and Jessica Lanier covered the court with 17 digs apiece.
