    Chaplains Corner

Once again Brothers we have had one of our own called home to that Celestial Lodge on High. OnJanuary 4th of this year, Brother Averia Dorman Bowman was taken from us after a long and hardfought battle with Cancer. Bro. Bowman came to us in 2011 from Highland Park No. 865 in Ken-

tucky. He started attending Lodge here and then the Cancer just got to much and he was unable to attend. Hehas been cremated and the service will be on Feb 4th at the Hawthorne Clubhouse in the Lemon Lime Room at11:00 AM with Reverend Harrington presiding. Brothers please try to attend his service.

Our sister Lodge Wildwood No.92 lost one of their Brothers this past week who was a long time Ma-son and good friend to Leesburg and its members. Brother Harold Wray passed on January 21st and his ser-vice was scheduled for Sunday January 25th in Wildwood. His burial to take place at the Florida Nationalcemetery in Bunnell. Brothers our sympathy goes out to both of their families at this time of sorrow.

    LIGHT FROM THE E ST

    WM Ron Glover

Hope this new year is finding all of you in good health. Before I begin I would like to thank WJim Ange-los for going to all the other installations in the district and representing me this year. I'm sure I don't have to telleverybody about the colds that have been going around and I myself had been laid up with the Flu and had to over-load on medicine just to make it to my own installation. Thank you Jimmy.

Brothers I also want to thank all the members of our lodge for their support so far. I also want to thank all

the Past Masters of our lodge, especially outgoing WJohn Haas. Every single one of you that I've talked to has

offered me your support and to a man have told me if I need help with anything to give them a call. Brothers I can'ttell you how important that is to me. Thank you all. Just another reason why this Brotherhood is so special. As I write this I'm prepping for our second meeting this year. The first meeting is in the books and I think

we've got those first meeting jitters out of the way. Everybody that has ever stood in the East knows the feeling

you get when you're up there and it's important to know when you are looking out at the Brothers there that they aresupporting you and that's exactly how I feel.

We've got a few things planned for the upcoming months. I want to remind the brothers that due to the firstSaturday and second Sunday falling on consecutive days in both February and March that we will not have any Sat-urday breakfasts for either of those months. That also means we are going to need all the brothers to help us andcome out for those Sunday dinners. Speaking of the Sunday dinners, brothers, if you didn't show up for the one inJanuary you missed an outstanding meal. We had so many compliments on the the food and it was great to see thatdining room as full as it was. If February's is as good as January's then you are going to want to do yourself a favor

and show up and have some good food.We are also planning on taking our annual trip to the Masonic Home in St. Petersburg sometime in March.

If any brothers would like to come please let me know. Also, the are always in need of sundries and toiletries, so ifany brother would like to donate any you can bring them to the lodge and we will be more than glad to take themwith us. Books and DVDs are always welcome as well.

Thank you all Brothers & I hope to see you in Lodge.

    From the West

    Bro Jeff Lamb

Before I became a Mason just a few short years ago,

I, like many other did my research on the fraternity to

learn all I could before getting involved in something

that I might regret. I have since learned that my Grand-father Lamb, whom I never met was a Master Mason,

but when I was researching the thing that intrigued me

the most was the fact so many of the founding fathers,

and key players in the Revolutionary War, were Ma-

    sons.

With just a quick search on the internet you can find

plenty of negative (and wrong) information on Freema-

sonry. So, to someone not sure of what they are joining,

this can become somewhat of a concern. The thing that

kept me from running away, so to speak, was the fact

that Washington, Hancock, Revere, and my number

one hero Benjamin Franklin, whom I have looked up to

ever since the day in fourth grade I learned who he was.

(I know some of you thought I was going to say Larry

Duff, but he wasn't in my history book.) If Washington,

Hancock, Franklin and countless other heroic men who

formed this wilderness into the great country that it is,

and so many of them are Freemasons, then this was ex-

actly what I wanted to be a part of.

To find myself sitting in the West of our lodge is

truly an honor and to be a small part of an organization

with such a rich history so rewarding. If you haven't

been to lodge lately I would like to invite you to come

back, meet your new officers and get back involved

with Leesburg #58. The history of Freemasonry is won-

derfully exciting, and our future can be too. Lets makesure we are all a part of it.

    From the Secretary

    WHank DeBerry

Hello again my Brothers! It is a pleasure totalk to you again. As you know, we have new offi-cers this year and they are doing all they can to makeyour Lodge better for you, the Brothers of Leesburg

Lodge. By the time this reaches you, we will havehad our first degree work of the New Year and I sin-cerely hope that many of you have taken the time tocome out and support these men in their endeavors. They have worked extremely hard to make youproud of their degree work and they deserve the rec-ognition of their Brothers. I would like to welcomeour newest Brother, Tyler Fahs into our Fraternityand wish him the best of times in his journey toLight.

Brothers, we have reached another end ofyear and to report our gains and losses is never a fun

thing but here goes. We have lost 14 Brothers to theGreat Architect, 3 Brothers to demit and 2 from res-ignation of dual or plural membership. We havegained 6 new Brothers through Initiation and ad-vancement and 3 Brothers through transfer/dual/plural memberships. That is still a net loss of 6members to our Lodge Brothers. We have at thecurrent time 226 active members of our Lodge notcounting our 3 Fellow Crafts and 2 Entered Appren-tices who are currently in the pipeline for advance-ment. Brothers, our Fraternity is dying. When I be-came Secretary two years ago, our number was 264active members! How did we lose so many in sucha short time? Yes, death has a big part in it but weare losing people to apathy as fast or faster than thegrim reaper can steal them from us. Come back toLodge and support your officers. You will be sur-prised at how good it will make you feel.

Dont forget to get your raffle tickets for theMasters and Wardens raffle. The drawing is on Feb-ruary 18th at the Masters and Wardens meeting inUmatilla No. 65. The tickets are only $10.00 eachand the prize is a good one. The winner will receive

a Panasonic 60 Smart HDTV valued at more than$800.00! This would make a great addition to yourhome or Lodge so be sure and get your tickets be-fore they are all gone. See the Secretary for yourchance to win!

Thanks for listening to my rant Brothers. Ihope I see you in Lodge soon and you can stop byanytime on Tuesday or Friday between 10 and 3 andI will be in the office at the Lodge building.

all who showed up to enjoy the meal! I hopeyou will spread the word about how you en-

A Civil War StoryBy John Hohenstein

    Zarubbal Lodge No. 15

    Savannah, Georgia

It was a time not long afterFort Sumter and The War of Northern Aggressionwas well under way. The Yankees, as they are still

wont to do, had promptly flocked to Hilton Head andTybee Islands, the barrier islands on opposite sides ofthe mouth of the Savannah River. The SavannahFolks didn't mind much that the Yankees had stolenthe good beaches, for the water was still a bit cool forSouthern preferences and, besides, they knew thegnats and mosquitoes would teach the Yankees a les-son they'd never forget. So, the Southerners, asSoutherners are wont to do sometimes, just waited. They didn't have to wait very long before the Yan-kees on Hilton Head sent out a messenger under awhite flag. It seemed that the Yankees had amongthem a young fellow who had passed through the Fel-low Craft Degree before shipping out. The Yankswere just sitting around slapping gnats when it oc-curred to one of them that, just maybe, there was anearby lodge that could test him in the Fellow CraftDegree and raise him to that of a Master Mason. As luck would have it, there was indeed a lodge inSavannah that would soon be having a Masters De-gree.One morning, not too many days later, a detail ofConfederate Cavalry slipped across the SavannahRiver into South Carolina and traveled through Bluff-ton to the shore opposite Hilton Head Island. From there they escorted one Fellow Craft Masonand, I believe, a number of Master Masons of theNorthern Persuasion, safely through the ConfederateLines and back through about 35 miles of Confeder-ate defenses to Savannah where the candidate and hiswitnesses were delivered into the lodge. The records note that this Brother was indeed profi-cient in the Fellow Craft Degree and he was raised tothe Degree of a Master Mason. That night another detail of Confederate Cavalry, nodoubt Brothers to a man, slipped back across the Sa-vannah River and safely escorted their Brothers backto Hilton Head.

    Comedy Corner

A small Lodge had had a string of bad luck. It waspreparing to initiate a candidate on a steamy eve-ning in June and its air conditioner had stopped

working. After sweating their way through part ofthe work, the Master had asked the candidate whathe most desired.

The candidate replied "a beer".At this juncture the WM., being startled, whis-

    pered "light" to the candidate.

"OK," the candidate replied, "a lite beer."

A Candidate for initiation was to be picked upand driven to the Lodge, but before this could hap-pen the car broke down. The Candidate said as itwas no great distance he would go on his bicycle.

Just when he reached the top of the hill hischain broke. As the Lodge was at the bottom ofthe other side and all he needed was a backpedalbrake, so he repaired the chain with a cord he hadin his pocket and freewheeled downhill to theLodge.

Later that evening in reply to a toast in hishonor, he said how proud he was to be a Freema-son but could not understand, as he had told noone, how the WM knew that he had come on his

own free wheel and a cord.
