Since its beginning in 1978, NISOD has sought to serve, engage, and inspire higher education faculty,

administrators, and staff. Our conference, resources, and publications strive to reinforce the importance of

teaching and leading and to celebrate instructors, staff, and administrators who make good on the promise

of the open door.

In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted its

first ceremony, held in conjunction with our annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership

Excellence, honoring and naming the individuals featured in this study as recipients of the NISOD

Excellence Award. The response to that ceremony was so positive that we began what has become an

annual celebratory tradition.

Early each academic year, we ask NISOD presidents to submit the names of individuals their colleges

wish to recognize for excellence. Selection criteria are left to the discretion of each institution. All

individuals whose names are submitted are recognized as NISOD Excellence Awards recipients. A special

ceremony is held during the annual NISOD Conference. All recipients are featured in the awards booklet

and presented with a medallion that has been specially cast in their honor.

We are indebted to NISOD member colleges for their continuing support of this annual celebration. The

Excellence Awards tradition gives NISOD the distinct privilege of honoring so many of our community

colleges’ best educators.

CONGRATULATIONS!Thank you for your outstanding

LEADERSHIP and TEACHING!

NISOD Excellence Award Recipients 2015

I believe in the power of education to improve people’s lives. I try to instill in my students the feeling that all is possible with hard work. The conversations about their dreams for the future, the “thank you” messages, and their stories of success are the best reward and motivation. — Professor, Mathematics

Excellent community colleges offer students a touch point. This is achieved by creating a welcoming environment, where students can feel supported. I am honored to be one of those “touch points” – where students can share their triumphs, fears and experiences as they learn to successfully navigate their life. — Director, TRIO Program for Student Achievement

My belief in my students’ abilities and my desire to help them achieve their goals is what guides me every day. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this process. I recognize the importance of every student interaction, and I strive to make those moments meaningful and relevant. — Hospitality Management Program Coordinator
