2015 DRAKES PRIDE

JUNIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Defending champions, Warwick & Worcester, warmed up for their eagerly awaited clash with Yorkshire in the DRAKES PRIDE Junior County Championship later this month with a 182 winning margin over South Yorkshire when the depleted 2015 competition got underway. They had a full card of winners in their home leg at Moor Lane BC with their opponents just scraping into triple figures. Yorkshire won by even more, 227 over North Lancs & Fylde in the other Section Three match, but their opponents did turn up four players short in Yorkshire. Wales had a big win over Merseyside in Section Two, winning home and away by 149 while Lancashire and Potteries & District played out a close run match. Tammy Taylor was one of three single figure winners for the visitors in the first six games but her 21-1 victory was cancelled out by Kyle Dawes who posted the same score. Lancashire though finished strongly at Scarisbrick NSC in Southport to win by 17. Over at London Road in the Potteries, Lancashire made six changes to their away side but put in a sterling performance to come away with just a 2 shot deficit and an overall 15 shot victory. In Section One, Shropshire were comfortable winners over Greater Manchester by 64. They won by 26 at home and 38 away to set them up nicely for their next match, a repeat of last year’s semi-final with Staffordshire who make their debut in the competition following Cumbria’s withdrawal.

SENIOR MERIT / CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS UPDATE

Isle of Man, Lancashire, Merseyside, North Lancs & Fylde and Yorkshire all completed their County Merits during May and have declared their representatives for this season’s BCGBA finals at Florence Tennis & Bowling Club, Stoke-on-Trent. David ‘Drof’ Bradford, the youngest ever winner of the Isle of Man Festival back in 2002, aged just 17, finally added the Isle of Man County Merit to his ever growing cv with a 21-15 victory over Trevor Quayle having led 16-8 at one stage. Billy Speed claimed the Lancashire Merit title with a 21-12 success over John Brown while Matt Gilmore, the 2001 champion, made a triumphant return to Merseyside bowls with a 21-20 thriller over their 2013 merit champion, Terry Glover (and BCGBA Champion of Champions winner), in an outstanding match. Graeme Wilson, two time merit winner, created a bit of Yorkshire history by becoming the first player to win the Yorkshire Merit on five occasions. He entered the record books with a 21-11 victory over Scott Fisher in the final. Finally, Mike Leach, winner in 1984, qualified by beating Terry Wood 21-15 in the final of the North Lancs & Fylde Merit.

All the county merit winners qualify for the BCGBA Champion of Champions at the Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool. They will be joined by Chris Mordue (pictured left) who completed a clean sweep of major Blackpool competitions - Autumn Waterloo, Talbot Trophy and Champion of Champions (2010) by adding the Spring Waterloo to his list of titles on the Fylde coast after his 21-14 defeat of Paul Dudley in the final. Mordue beat the 2012 champion, Danny Barwise, 21-14 in his semi-final while Dudley defeated the 2002 champ, Graeme Wilson, 21-11. Last season all players on the Reserve list made it through to Blackpool thanks to the number of double qualifiers. James Davison will be hoping for more of the same this season as his victory in the Elland Open Classic has given him a chance of reaching this season’s finals. James won a close game with Callum Wraight, 21-18, to win the trophy for the second time in three years.

BRITISH CROWN GREEN LADIES BOWLING ASSOCIATION

SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Match Day 2 in the British Crown Green Ladies Senior County Championship saw Shropshire the biggest winners on the day with Dudley winning by the narrowest of margins. Both matches in Section 1 were close run affairs with North Derbyshire getting past North Shropshire by 11 while Dudley won by just 5 in their encounter with North Midlands. Cumbria sat this one out and now play North Derbyshire in their next match where it is expected that one of the teams will lose their unbeaten record albeit they have only played one match each. In Section 2, Yorkshire and Wales kept up their unbeaten start to the season and face each other in the next round of matches. Yorkshire had an impressive home win in which they just missed out on a perfect card of winners with North Warwickshire’s Sarah Richards her side’s only winner. North Warwickshire won their home leg but Yorkshire finished 35 chalks to the good when all scores were added up. Wales were convincing 97 chalk winners over Wirral, winning home and away. There were two contrasting winning margins in Section 3 with Lancashire winning by 14 while Shropshire won by 118. Lancashire won home and away against South Staffordshire, both matches by 7, to keep their 100% record intact. Shropshire dominated their match with Cheshire, Lancashire’s next opponents, and, like Yorkshire, almost had the perfect home record, Carol Nicklin saving her side from a whitewash. Finally, in Section 4 Warwick & Worcester and South Yorkshire were comfortable winners leaving them both with two wins out of two. Defending champions, South Yorkshire, beat Burton by 44 while Warwick & Worcester defeated Staffordshire by 73. The two meet in Match Day 3 in what should be a close encounter.

COUNTY AVERAGE WINNERS CLASSIC Ladies Talbot Trophy organiser, Julie Holcroft (North Lancs & Fylde), is the 2015 British Crown Green Ladies County Average Winners Classic champion. Julie came through the 32-strong field at Fulwood Conservative Club, Preston, to beat Lisa Smith (Lancashire) 21-9 in the final. Julie’s road to the final was a mixed bag with two 21-19 victories, a 21-5 win and a 21-6 semi-final success. Lisa though had a much tougher run with two 21-20 thrillers, one in her semi-final with Kate Suggett (Shropshire). She also had close a 21-19 win and 21-14 victory as she made it through to the final. JUNIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Yorkshire juniors once again dominated the British Crown Green Ladies Junior County Championship when it was hosted by Grange Sports & Social Club, Warrington. They kept hold of the trophy they won twelve months previously with Yorkshire (Alan) beating Yorkshire (Roy) by 11 in the final. This year’s competition attracted just twelve sides – five from Yorkshire – with the teams split into four groups of three playing each other on a round-robin basis. Each team had six players per side comprising of junior girls and junior boys and if there was more than one team from a county they took the first name of the team manager. All the group winners finished with two wins out of two and in the first semi-final Yorkshire (Roy) beat Shropshire (Jackie) by 14. Yorkshire got off to a fine start thanks to Shane Wainwright’s opening 21-9 card but a late 21-6 return from Aaron King for the Shropshire side came too late. Jack Chesswas (21-8) was the stand out card that saw Yorkshire (Alan) make it a white rose final after they defeated Warwick & Worcester by 18. The final was a high scoring game in which Marc Armitage’s 21-13 card for (Alan) was the best of a close match.
