2015 EMBRY-RIDDLE CROSS COUNTRY OUTLOOK

EMBRY-RIDDLE MEN

Last November, the Embry-Riddle men’s cross country team dominated The Sun Confer-ence Championships, winning the event for the 10th straight season. In 2015 and 2016, as a provisional member of NCAA II, the Eagles will not be able to compete for a postseason title. With that in mind, Head Coach Mike Rosolino has set his sights a little bit further into the future than usual, viewing the next two years as build-ing blocks towards a potential Sunshine State Conference Championship in 2017.

“I think this year is sort of a rebuilding year for the men,” Rosolino said. “We’re young and we’re going to utilize some redshirts, which means we’re only going to return three of our top eight runners from a year ago. If we’re go-ing to have a solid season, we’re going to need some of our freshmen to step up in a big way right away. More importantly, I really like the po-tential that this group has for the future as we look to build towards our first year of full eligibil-ity in 2017.”

When factoring in the redshirts that will be used on Matt Graves, Adam Lawrence and Paul McKenna, the Eagles will have seven returners from a year ago. Along with those seven return-ers will be six newcomers, including five fresh-men.

Sophomore Andrew Carpenter will likely be the top runner for the Blue and Gold this season. Carpenter was named the Newcomer of the Year in The Sun Conference last season after finishing ninth overall at the conference meet with a time of 26:39.94. He ran a personal best 25:20.31 at the Charles Bowles Invitational on Oct. 4, a time that placed him as the 11th-fastest runner in school history.

Noah Kemp, a sophomore transfer from NCAA I Portland, is expected to be one of the top runners for ERAU in 2015. At Portland last year, Kemp posted his best 8K time of 26:13. He is a native of St. Augustine, Fla. where he set three school records at St. Augustine High School.

Seniors Jamin Mays, Ryan Larson and Palmer Lintz will be competing to be among the top-five finishers for ERAU throughout the season. Last year, Mays placed third overall at the ERAU Asics Classic (Sept. 27) and Larson was the sec-ond Eagle finisher at the FSU Invitational (Oct. 10), while Lintz was the fifth Embry-Riddle har-rier to cross the line at the FSU Invitational.

Junior Andrew Carosi and sophomores James Fell and DeVontae Persha will look to in-crease their impact on the team scores in 2015. Carosi ran a 27:38.65 at the Sand Shark Invita-tional (Oct. 25) for his season-best time, while Fell posted a personal best 27:05.53 at the same meet. Persha posted a season-best 29:55.41 at the FSU Invitational.

The incoming freshmen class includes Rob-ert Davis, John Dennehy, Samuel Dick, Will Rice and Calahan Warren.

EMBRY-RIDDLE WOMEN

Much like the men’s team, the Embry-Riddle women’s cross country team will be looking to build off of the momentum from a success-ful run at the NAIA level while they prepare for the opportunity to compete for a championship at the NCAA II level in a couple of years. Last year’s team placed second at The Sun Confer-ence Championships, and while the postseason isn’t available to them in 2015, Rosolino believes this squad has the potential to be one of the best ever.

“Looking at our women’s team, we’re very young,” Rosolino stated. “We don’t have a single senior, we’ve got five freshmen and a bunch of sophomores. But the potential that this group has collectively is probably one of, if not the best we’ve had in this program. The sky is the limit for them and I can’t wait to see what they can do at a national level in NCAA II in a couple of years. The 2015 season is going to lay the foundation for that ultimate goal in 2017.”

This year’s team features eight returners, six of which are sophomores, and six newcomers, including five freshmen.

With just two upperclassmen on the roster, juniors Marina LeVine and Maite Moscoso will be asked to take on a leadership role on this young team. LeVine was one of the team’s top three finishers at five of the seven meets last year, while Moscoso ran a season-best 20:21.74 at the Sand Shark Invitational and was a top-five finisher for the team on two occasions.

The rest of the returners on this year’s team are all sophomores, led by Alex Orr and Alexan-dria Meneses. Orr was the top Eagle finisher at six meets a year ago, including a fifth overall fin-ish at the ERAU Asics Classic. Meneses was one of the top five Eagles to finish three meets and was 23rd overall at the conference meet.

The returning sophomore class also includes Eliza Gazda, Hayley Lewis, Annette Morrison, Brianna Paczynski and Audrey Parios. Gazda and Paczynski both ran sub-21-minute times at the Sand Shark Invitational last year, while Morri-son earned a top-10 team finish at the Mountain Dew Invitational and Parios placed eighth among the Blue and Gold at the FSU Invitational.

Newcomers to the squad include freshmen Sarah Edens, Leanne Ellis, Josie Gray, Mikaela Hakamaa and Tia Larsen-Calcano.

SCHEDULE

Both teams will open the season at the Uni-versity of Tampa Early Bird Classic on Sept. 4. Two weeks later, the Eagles will compete at the Mountain Dew Invitational hosted by the Uni-versity of Florida, and ERAU will close out Sep-tember at the Moccasin Invitational hosted by Florida Southern on Sept. 25.

October will see the Blue and Gold compete three more times, beginning with the FSU Invita-tional on Oct. 2. Embry-Riddle will host its annual home meet, the ERAU Asics Clas-sic, on Oct. 10. The final meet of the 2015 season will be the Sand Shark Invitational hosted by former Sun Conference foe South Carolina Beaufort on Oct. 24.

Over the course of 13 cross country seasons, Mike Rosolino’s runners dominated Sun Conference competition. The men’s team won 10 consecutive league titles from 2005-14, while the women’s team topped the conference standings in seven straight seasons from 2006-12. The Eagles’ run began in 2005 when the Embry-Riddle men captured the program’s first league and NAIA Regional titles and made their first team appearance at the NAIA National Championship. A year later, Rosolino’s harriers repeated that performance and were joined by the ERAU women who claimed their first regional and conference crowns.

Rosolino was named The Sun Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 16 times in his Embry-Riddle career - nine-times for the men and seven on the women’s side – and the NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year four times. He picked up his latest league coaching accolade in 2014 after leading the men to The Sun Conference crown and a 23rd-place finish at the NAIA National Championships. Rosolino saw Ellie Staker become to first women’s cross country runner in program history to earn NAIA All-America accolades in 2013.

The men took fifth place overall at the NAIA National Championship in 2009, with three runners earning All-America honors for the first time in program history, while the women finished 16th that same season. Rosolino coached Evans Kirwa to his second All-America honor in 2011, the first Eagle runner to accomplish the feat.

In 13 years with the Eagle cross country programs, Rosolino has coached 100 All-Conference performers (51 men and 49 women). The Eagles have also been extremely succesful in the classroom, posting 16 CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades and 34 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

In 2005, Rosolino was tasked with launching the track and field program at Embry-Riddle. His penchant for success is evident in track and field as well as he led the men to eight conference championships and the women to six league titles in the last 10 seasons.

Rosolino has coached numerous conference champions, 183 NAIA All-Americans and seven NAIA National Champi-ons who have won 16 individual national championships: Beth McCubbin (1000m: 2008, 2009), Crystal Bardge (100m hurdles: 2011, 2012; 60m hurdles: 2011), Sam Vazquez (1000m: 2011), Nicole Bonk (3000m Race Walk: 2012, 2013; 5000m Race Walk: 2012), Reta Woodard (Weight Throw: 2012, 2014; Hammer Throw: 2013, 2014), Mike Edwards (High Jump: Indoor 2013, Outdoor 2013) and Ellie Staker (Indoor 800m).

Rosolino came to Embry-Riddle from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., where he spent two years on the coach-ing staff for the Blue Hose. He began his stint at Presbyterian as an assistant coach and was elevated to the head job after just six months. Despite the brevity of his tenure with the program, Rosolino guided the Blue Hose to their best finishes in school history, producing two South Atlantic Conference Runners of the Year and a Freshman of the Year in the process.

Prior to earning his position within the Presbyterian athletic department, Rosolino spent four academic years (1997-01) as the Director of Residence Life in Clinton. He also served as Resident Director for one year (1996-97) while attending graduate school.

A former standout runner for Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., Rosolino helped the Lynx to three Southern Colle-giate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles from 1993-95. In his final season, he assumed the role of team captain and finished 11th overall at the SCAC Championship meet. Rosolino also ran two seasons for the Rhodes track team, competing in the middle to long distance races. In 1995, he finished fifth at the SCAC Championships in the steeplechase.

An Academic All-American for Rhodes in 1994 and 1995, Rosolino was a National Merit finalist and earned distinction as a National Science Scholar.

Rosolino earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Rhodes in 1996. He went on to receive his Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina in 1998 with an emphasis on student personnel services. Ro-solino also holds a Level II certification from USA Track and Field. He earned a second Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola College in New Orleans in 2009.

Rosolino and his wife Carrie reside in Port Orange with daughter Lynnlee and son Tanner.

Peter Hopfe came to the Embry-Riddle athletic program in January 2005 from Flagler Palm Coast High School where he worked with both the cross country and track programs as either the head or assistant coach for 10 years.

In 2001 and 2002, he led the FPC boys’ cross country teams to state titles. He led both the boys’ track and girls cross country teams to runner-up finishes at the Florida State meets in the 2001 and 2003, re-spectively, and also guided the FPC girls to numerous top-10 finishes.

A two-time Florida State Coach of the Year, Hopfe has coached indi-vidual track and cross country state champions, including Sam Vazquez who holds the state of Florida high school record at 1600m, was se-lected as Track and Field magazine’s 1600-meter Runner of the Year in 2003 and competed in the 2012 London Olympics for Puerto Rico, running the 1500m. Other notable runners include Justin Harbor who was a state champion in cross country and the two-Mile, and Matt Cian-cilli a multi-event state champion.

Hopfe graduated from Bentley College in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in Management. While at Bentley, he earned four letters as a cross country and track runner for the Falcons.

Although he competed at the collegiate level, Hopfe’s career as a runner blossomed after college as he focused on 5K road races and marathons at the elite level. Hopfe’s best time at 5K was 14:54. In 1987, he ran a personal best 2:28 at the Boston Peace Marathon, which earned him the opportunity to compete for the United States at the 1988 Moscow Marathon.

Hopfe is also active in the local running community as a member of the Daytona Beach Track Club and the Ancient City Road Runners in St. Augustine.

In addition to his coaching resume, Hopfe owned and operated a restaurant and multiple real estate companies. Hopfe and his wife Cynthia have two children and one grandchild.

DAYTONA BEACH

DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES

Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier des-tination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community.

The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March.

Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and cel-ebrates the diversity of its community.

Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic, Orlando City FC and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by host-ing numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Daytona Beach boasts three major sports franchises in NASCAR, the LPGA and the USTA. The Daytona Inter-national Speedway is one of the most recognizable race-tracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.

The beaches of Daytona rank sixth for beach destina-tions in the United States. Every year, millions of vaca-tioners flock to the Atlantic Ocean and Daytona Beach to experience the sandy beaches in Volusia County. The hard packed sand allows motorized vehicles to drive right onto the beach.

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.

The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant cli-mate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beach-side and the mainland.

Daytona Beach boasts more than 200 restaurants, in-cluding barbecue, Mexican, Oriental, Greek, Indian, Ital-ian, Thai, seafood, Cuban, health and natural foods.

3Embry-Riddle has three campuses: - traditional, residential campus-es in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and the Worldwide Campus provides educational opportunities to working adults at more than 150 locations in the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada and the Middle East.

15 The student/faculty ratio at the Daytona Beach campus is 15-to-1 and the average class size is 23.

27Embry-Riddle offers 27 undergraduate degree programs adminis-tered by the Colleges of Aviation, Arts & Sciences, Business En-gineering. ERAU also offers 15 graduate degrees, as well as four doctoral programs.

5700 The undergraduate enrollment at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus is 5,700. Of that number, 17 percent are international stu-dents representing 98 countries.

Embry-Riddle’s 100,000 plus alumni include six astronauts6

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s oldest, largest and most presti-gious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. The curriculum covers the opera-tion, engineering and research of modern aircraft, alternative vehicles and clean energy systems and the management of aviation and aerospace organizations.

Approximately 34,000 students pursue degrees from among 40 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and at more than 150 education centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also offers online coursework.

Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations.

The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus, located next to Daytona Beach International Airport, has 4,600 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cultural activities. The campus is within an hour’s drive of the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast and within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports.

HistoryOn Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer

John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education.

After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force con-tracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance.

In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight train-ing, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.

AcademicsEmbry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association

of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels, as well as doctoral degrees in five areas of study.

At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate as-sistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through university-wide voice mail and e-mail.

HousingEmbry-Riddle’s on-campus housing is an integral part of the university experience.

It gives students the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and to appreciate the unique values that everyone brings to this diverse institution.

Students can choose from eight housing styles ranging from suites to efficiency apart-ments to traditional residence hall designs. All campus student rooms have telephone service, Internet access and satellite TV connection. Lounges, study and meeting rooms, game rooms and other common areas are available to all.

The housing facilities are enhanced by four campus dining locations, a fitness center and recreational facilities.

Extracurricular ActivitiesThe Student Activities Office coordinates numerous special events, such as comedy

shows, concerts, plays and weekly movies, as well as on-campus clubs and organiza-tions. Students can choose to get involved in more than 150 professional organizations, sports clubs, fraternities, sororities and special-interest clubs.

The university also gives students opportunities to work part time while pursuing a

degree. The Student Employment Office helps place students in jobs on or off campus. Job opportunities are available regardless of financial need and allow students to gain self-confidence, important time-management skills and valuable employment references.

After GraduationInternships and co-operative education opportunities, available through the univer-

sity’s Career Services Office, enable students to gain valuable experience in their chosen field. In many cases, students have been offered full-time jobs as a result of an intern-ship or co-op experience. The Career Services Office also has a placement program for graduates of the university. Counselors are available to help refine resumes, hone interviewing skills and help explore job opportunities within a vast network of companies.

The Industry/Career Expo held each November has become the aviation industry’s hiring event of the year. The expo attracts hundreds of recruiters from top companies looking to hire the university’s graduates. Professionals with an Embry-Riddle degree en-joy a variety of career options. Graduates have gone on to train as astronauts, fly planes, manage airports, design mechanical systems and serve as bank administrators. Included in the ranks of the Embry-Riddle alumni are six astronauts, a former U.S. congressman and a former White House Fellow.

SONJA TAYLORExecutive Director Student-Athlete Support Services/Senior woman administrator

The Embry-Riddle Athletics Administration announced the appointment of Sonja Taylor to the position of Executive Di-rector of Student-Athlete Support Services in January 2014. Taylor, a 30-year veteran of the University, was also designated the Senior Woman Administrator.

In her role with Athletics, Taylor is a member of the senior leadership team, focusing primarily on support services and programs for student-athletes, including academic excellence, personal and career development and overall well-being. She also provides sport supervision for several of ERAU’s female

athletics teams and coaches. Before joining the Athletics Department, Taylor served in a variety of roles within

the University’s Division of Student Affairs. She began her career at Embry-Riddle as ERAU’s Residence Life Coordinator in 1984 and two years later, she became the Direc-tor of Housing. During her tenure as the Director of Housing, she provided administra-tive leadership in the planning and construction of the Student Village in 1997, which increased the number of on-campus residents from 900 to 1,900.

In 2002, Taylor was named the Associate Dean of Students, providing oversight to Housing and Residence Life, Health Services, and Counseling and Orientation, while

serving as the functional Director of Housing. Three years later, Taylor was named the Dean of Students, a position she held until she was named the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs in January of 2013.

As a leader on Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus, Taylor has served as the Chair for a number of committees, including Diversity and Inclusion, University Tobac-co-Free Communication & Transition, the Embry-Riddle Annual Fund and Judicial Pro-cess Review, which resulted in the creation of the University’s Honor Code and Honor Board. Taylor has also served as Off-Site Committee Member for the Commission on Colleges’ Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and has been a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Association of Student Conduct Administrators. Her successes at Embry-Riddle have led to her being asked to be the presenter at several conferences, including the Association of College and University Housing Officers Conference and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Taylor has been an avid supporter of sports in general and the Eagles’ Athletics pro-gram in particular. She has attended numerous games as a season ticket holder and her interaction with the Eagle coaches and student-athletes has resulted in her being asked to be an honorary coach at home contests, in addition to being a guest speaker at the 2012 ERAU Student-Athlete Convocation.
