    2015 ROSTER BREAKDOWN

  • MBRY- IDDLE BASEBALLE R

    4 2015 MEDIA GUIDE/ERAUBaseball ERAUAthletics.com/Baseball

In 2014, the Embry-Riddle baseball team won 40 games, claimed its 15th regular season Sun Conference title and advanced to an Opening Round championship game. Yet, by Embry-Riddles standards, many would consider the 2014 season a disappoint-ment. It was the first time since 2007 that ERAU did not advance to the NAIA World Series and the 40 wins were the fewest in a season since 2001. In 2015, Head Coach Randy Stegall hopes to see his team make one last visit to Lewiston, Idaho to compete in the NAIA World Series in Embry-Riddles last season before moving to NCAA Division II.

We approach every season the same, and its no different this year, Stegall said. I go in to each season wanting to make it back to the NAIA World Series. But more importantly, this year I want our team to have fun playing the game that we all love. If we play as a team of selfless individuals who are relentless, work hard, have fun and outplay the other team, thats all I can ask for. The wins and championships and everything else will fall into place if we can do those things.

One of the keys this season will be trying to replace the two high-est draft picks in the history of the program, Daniel Poncedeleon (9th round - St. Louis Cardinals) and Darryl Knight (14th round - New York Mets). Poncedeleon went 9-2 with a 1.60 ERA in 14 starts last year, leading the Eagles with 103 strikeouts, while Knight led the team in most offensive categories, including bat-ting average (.338), home runs (15), RBIs (60), total bases (138), slugging percentage (.648) and on-base percentage (.431).

Darryl and Daniel were special players, and you cant simply replace them, Stegall remarked. Daniel was probably the best starting pitcher weve ever had and Darryl was amazing both at the plate and behind it, catching most of the innings all year long. We cant expect anyone to just step in and replace them, but weve got some returners and some new guys who we think will strive to get to that level.

CatchersKnight started all 61 games last year, including 57 games at catcher, which continued a trend that has seen players like Adam Cellini and Austin Goolsby who have started over 90 percent of their teams games behind the plate. Stegall believes this year, that trend may come to an end.

Darryl was a workhorse behind the plate for us last year, but I dont expect to see anyone catching 50-plus games this season, Stegall stated. Dalton Hughes and Cody Bogart have both made a strong case for playing time, so I expect to see them splitting the duties, with Ryan Maxon filling in at times.

Hughes spent the last two seasons at the University of Tampa, ap-pearing in 37 contests, including nine starts. Bogart is a freshman from Inverness, Florida, where he played baseball and football at Citrus High School. Maxon returns for his sophomore season after playing in 19 games with four starts for ERAU a year ago.

    Infielders

Last season, Embry-Riddle shuffled a number of different players around the infield throughout the year. With many faces return-ing from that group, the flexibility remains an option that Stegall intends to utilize as a strength in 2015.

Weve got a number of guys who are capable of playing a num-ber of different positions around the infield, Stegall commented. I liked the versatility that we had last year with guys like Jake Cavender who can play all four infield positions. It gives me the flexibility to move guys around in order to keep guys in the lineup when theyre swinging a hot bat. With the returners we have as well as a few new guys who should see a lot of playing time right away, weve got another solid group of versatile infielders.

Among the returners are Cavender, who hit .282 and scored 37 runs last year and Hunter Bruehl, who started 50 games between first base and designated hitter.

Newcomers who are expected to make an impact include Joshua Garcia, Jordan Brown, Kyle Zirbes and Enderson Jose Velasquez. Garcia, a junior transfer who could be the starting second base-man, hit .369 at St. Johns River State College last year, while Brown is a freshman from Spruce Creek High School where he hit .360 as senior. Zirbes, a transfer from Caada College where he hit .344 with 28 steals in 2014, is a dynamic player who can play shortstop or third base, and Velasquez is an option at short-stop who hit .390 and slugged .526 last season at the College of Central Florida.

    Outfield

The outfield positions are a little more clear-cut in Stegalls eyes heading into the 2015 campaign. Liam Goodall and Kyle Buchan-an return while Tobias Moreno, a redshirt junior, and Jonathan Camp, a junior transfer, are expected to see significant playing time.

I like our outfield, especially when we can put Liam, Kyle and Tobias out there, because that gives us one of the fastest outfields in the nation, Stegall said. I expect good things out of them offensively as well, but in the field, they are a special group. Jonathan also brings a lot to the table, both at the plate and in the field, and I expect him to contribute as a middle-of-the-lineup guy who plays some outfield and also will be a designated hitter.

Goodall hit .319 and led the team with 41 runs scored a year ago, while Buchanan had 29 hits, including four home runs, and was 11-of-14 in stolen bases. Moreno, who is expected to be the leadoff hitter, redshirted last year after transfer-ring from Florida State College at Jacksonville where he hit .287 and stole 21 bases in 2013. Camp joins the Eagles as a junior transfer from Santa Fe College where he hit .329 with a team-high 51 hits, including 18 for extra bases.

Designated HitterLast season, 11 different players started at designated hitter, and it would not be surprising to see that again in 2015.

Weve had a DH-by-committee for a few years now, and that philosophy hasnt changed, Stegall remarked. Depending on how the outfield shakes out, Jonathan Camp might see more time at DH than anyone else, but I also expect A.J. Mazzurco to get some at-bats as the DH, and if theres anyone whos swinging a hot bat, theyll jump in and be the DH.

Mazzurco, who could also see time in the outfield, is a junior transfer from Santa Fe College where he hit .329 as a freshman and drove in 20 runs last season.

PitchersWhile the Eagles and Pitching Coach Dave Therneau will need to find a way to replace Poncedeleon along with Ronnie Lozada and David Lidyard, ERAUs two most reliable late-inning relievers last year, there are a number of quality arms returning from a season ago. In addition to the returners, Stegall has brought in a few new faces who will see time on the mound in 2015.

We have Stetson Nelson and Corey Tufts back, and theyre go-ing to be our top two guys, Stegall stated. Theyre both locked in as weekend starters. Clayton Wagner and Tyler Cyr are also back, and theyll be fighting for that third weekend spot along with Kenny Burkhead. For the back-end of the bullpen, Im ex-pecting Austen Thrailkill to be our eighth-inning guy and Zac Grotz to be the closer.

Nelson led the team with 102 innings pitched last year, going 9-4 with a 2.21 ERA in 20 games with 14 starts. Tufts was another reliable starter, finishing the year with an 8-4 record and a 2.42 ERA in 19 games, 14 of which were starts. Wagner went 3-2 with a 3.47 ERA in 17 games, starting eight, while Cyr held opponents to just a .184 average in 29.2 innings.

Burkhead is a transfer from Florida State University where he spent the last two seasons, appearing in 17 games. Thrailkill red-shirted last season and has two seasons of eligibility remaining; he last pitched at St. Petersburg College in 2012 where he struck out 35 batters in 32.2 innings. Grotz has one season of eligibil-ity after transferring from the University of Tennessee where he made six appearances last season. In 2013, Grotz posted a 2.24 ERA in 80.1 innings of work at the College of San Mateo.

Home Games in Bold played at Sliwa Stadium* Denotes Sun Conference Game

    (DH) Denotes Doubleheader

ScheduleSeven home series highlight the Embry-Riddle schedule in 2015, including nine home games against teams ranked in the preseason Coaches Poll. ERAU will host No. 12 Bellevue and No. 21 Brewton-Parker for two-game sets, and the Eagles will welcome No. 13 Southeastern to Sliwa Stadium for the final Sun Conference series of the season.

The Eagles open up the season at home with a three-game series against Reinhardt Feb. 6-8 before hosting No. 21 Brewton-Parker in a doubleheader on Feb. 10.

ERAU hits the road for eight straight games beginning with the first conference series at Webber International Feb. 13-14, followed by a trip to NCAA II Palm Beach Atlantic on Feb. 17.

The weekend of Feb. 20-22, the Blue and Gold will travel to Montgomery, Alabama to play three games against Auburn Montgomery and a single game against No. 5 Faulkner.

Embry-Riddle returns home to host NCAA II Saint Leo on Feb. 24 for the first of seven straight home games. The next night the Eagles play host to No. 19 Davenport and then return to conference play with a three-game set against Ave Maria, Feb. 27-28. ERAU caps the home stand with a pair of games against No. 12 Bellevue March 1-2.

After a brief road trip to West Palm Beach for a conference series at Northwood March 6-7, the Eagles land back at home for six straight games at Sliwa Stadium, beginning with St. Francis (Ill.) on March 8. No. 23 Tennessee Wesleyan visits Daytona Beach on March 10, followed by Aquinas the next night. The Blue and Gold host St. Thomas in another Sun Conference series beginning on Friday, March 13.

On March 16, ERAU will travel to Leesburg to play a neutral-site doubleheader against No. 17 Mount Vernon Nazarene. Huntington will visit Sliwa Stadium the next day for an afternoon non-conference contest.

Embry-Riddle will venture outside the Sunshine State for the second time in 2015 when they travel to South Carolina Beaufort March 20-21 before returning home for a short, one-game homestand against Talladega on March 23.

ERAU finishes a home-and-home series with Saint Leo with a road game on March 24, and the Eagles will follow that up with their first of two visits to the Peach State when they visit Thomasville, Georgia to face the Thomas Night Hawks in a three-game conference series March 27-28.

Conference play continues back at home April 3-4 as Warner comes to town, followed by the annual exhibition game against the recently renamed Daytona Tortugas on April 8 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Blue and Gold venture south for the final road conference se-ries of 2015 at Florida Memorial April 10-11 before traveling back to Georgia for a doubleheader at No. 21 Brewton-Parker on April 14.

The final Sun Conference series in ERAU baseball history will be against Southeastern April 17-18, and that will also be the final regular season home games at Sliwa Stadium in 2015.

The regular season concludes for the Eagles with a trip to NCAA II powerhouse Tampa on April 21 in a preview of what will become an annual conference battle when ERAU officially joins the Sunshine State Conference.

The Sun Conference Tournament will once again return to Fort Myers and City of Palms Park from May 1-5, while the NAIA National Cham-pionship Opening Round will take place at nine different sites across the country from May 11-14. The 2015 Avista-NAIA World Series is slated for May 22-29 and will once again be held in Lewiston, Idaho.

    RANDY STEGALLHEAD COACH

    41HEAD COACH

    319-116 (.733)8TH SEASON

In the summer of 2007, the athletic administration at Embry-Riddle was faced the daunting task of finding someone to take over the very successful Eagle baseball program. Following an extensive national search, Randy Stegall was named the third head coach in the history of Eagle baseball in July 2007.

Stegall inherited a program that was considered a national power, having made five Avista-NAIA World Series appearances in six seasons. Stegall set about building on that tradition of success. In his first season, he led the Blue and Gold to a 44-18 overall and an 18-3 conference record. The Eagles started 2008 league play 3-3, but rebounded for a 15-game winning streak that led to a sixth conference championship in seven years.

The league title gave the Eagles the No. 1 seed for the NAIA Region XIV tournament and they capitalized on the advantage, claiming the regional crown and earning a spot in the 10-team NAIA World Series as the sixth seed. The Eagles went 2-2 at the World Series to finish fifth in the nation. Stegalls success in his inaugural season with the Eagles earned him Florida Sun Conference and NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year honors.

Stegalls second season with the Eagles culminated in a 44-14 record and The Sun Confer-ence regular season and tournament titles. Once again, Stegall was hailed as the confer-ence Coach of the Year. The NAIA introduced a new format to postseason play, eliminat-ing regional and super regional tournaments and introducing a National Championship Opening Round. Stegall and his ballclub showed that they were not only up to the task of hosting a five-team Opening Round tournament, they were also quite capable of winning it, collecting three straight victories to advance to the NAIA World Series. Stegall garnered NAIA-Rawlings East Region Coach of the Year honors for his clubs NAIA National Cham-pionship Opening Round crown.

In 2010, the Blue and Gold finished 47-19 overall and finished as the No. 3 team in the na-tion. ERAU won its third consecutive Sun Conference title during the regular season with a 21-6 record, then followed that up with The Sun Conference tournament crown, coming out of the losers bracket to beat St. Thomas twice to claim the title.

The Eagles were granted a No. 1 seed in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round and the hosts did not dissapoint, getting a two-out, two-run double from senior Branden Roper-Hubbert in the bottom of the ninth inning against St. Thomas in the championship finale to win a thrilling 3-2 game over the Bobcats, sending ERAU to their ninth NAIA World Series.

Stegall led his team to a 3-2 record in the 10-team event, including a win over national No. 1 Lewis-Clark State. The Eagles would eventually bow out in the semifinals, finishing as the third-best team in the nation, for the second-best finish in program history. Stegall again earned NAIA-Rawlings East Region Coach of the Year honors.

Stegall accomplished additional firsts during the 2011 year, earning his first 50-win season, as well as getting his team ranked No. 1 overall over the final three weeks of the season. The Eagles breezed through The Sun Conference slate with a 24-3 record, the best in conference history. Next, the Eagles blew out all four of their opponents in The Sun Con-ference tournament, earning a No. 1 seed in the NAIA Opening Round - Daytona Beach bracket. ERAU continued its undefeated postseason, posting two wins over Brewton-Park-er (Ga.) en route to the programs 10th NAIA World Series appearance.

The Eagles entered the 2011 World Series as the No. 1 overall seed, winning their opening game aganst eventual national champion Concordia (Calif.) in convincing fashion. ERAU placed fifth in the 10-team event, ending the 2011 season with a 51-11 overall record.

During the 2012 campaign, the Eagles captured their fifth straight and 13th Sun Confer-ence regular season title and made the 11th trip to the NAIA World Series in program history. Stegalls squad finished 43-18, the 22nd consecutive winning season in Embry-Riddle history and the 14th 40-win season.

Stegall led the Blue and Gold to the programs sixth straight Sun Conference regular sea-son title in 2013, compiling the second-best league record in conference history (23-4). The Eagles lost the first game of The Sun Conference Tournament, but rolled through five consecutive elimination games, including three on the final day of the tournament, to claim the squads fourth tournament title in Stegalls tenure.

Embry-Riddle hosted an NAIA National Tournament Opening Round for the fifth straight year in 2013, posting a perfect 3-0 record, becoming one of just two teams to reach the NAIA World Series in every season the Opening Round had been utilized. The Eagles won their first two games at the World Series (a program first), falling to eventual national champion Faulkner and eventual national runner-up Lewis-Clark State to end the season at 50-15, the second 50-win season for Stegall.

The 2014 campaign saw the Eagles once again claim The Sun Conference regular season crown, posting a 22-5 record in league play. The Blue and Gold fell in the title game of the conference tournament, but the Eagles were still chosen to host an Opening Round for the sixth time in as many seasons. After coming out of the losers bracket to force a winner-take-all contest against Southern Poly, the Eagles postseason run stopped short of the World Series for the first time in Stegalls time at Embry-Riddle.

Stegall came to Embry-Riddle from Indiana Tech where he spent two seasons as the War-riors head coach, compiling a 69-44-2 overall record. In 2006, the Warriors were 29-29-1 overall, were third in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and finished second in the Region VIII tournament.

A year leater, Stegall guided the Warriors to a 40-15-1 record and the WHAC regular season and tournament titles, earning him league Coach of the Year honors. Indiana Tech was also ranked 20th in the final NAIA poll.

Prior to coaching at Indiana Tech, Stegall spent five years as the top assistant coach to Woody Hunt at Cumberland University in Tennessee where he worked primarily with hitters and infield-ers. During his time at Cumberland, the Bulldogs won three conference championships, two regional titles, two super regional titles and made two straight trips to the Final Four at the NAIA World Series. In 2004, the Bulldogs defeated Oklahoma City to capture the schools first NAIA World Series crown.

Stegall has coached seven first-team All-Americans, 10 second-team All-Americans and nine honorable mention All-Americans during his time at Embry-Riddle, Indiana Tech and Cumber-land.

Stegall began his collegiate career playing at the University of South Carolina where he earned honorable mention All-Southeastern Conference honors in 1995. After two seasons with the Gamecocks, Stegall transferred to Cumberland (Tenn.) where he set the school single-season record in hitting (.479) and finished fifth in the nation in runs scored (87), hits (113) and total bases (201) as a junior. His performance that year earned him Mid South Conference and Re-gional Player of the Year honors. He was also a first team All-American and was the runner-up to the NAIA Player of the Year.

Stegall was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 25th round of the 1998 Major League Baseball draft. During his four years as a professional baseball player, Stegall played for the Billings Mus-tangs, Clinton Lumberkings, Rockford Reds, Dayton Dragons and the Chattanooga Lookouts.

In 1998, he earned All-Pioneer League honors after finishing ninth in the league in batting (.316) and hits (83). In 2000, he led the Midwest League in doubles (43), which was second in all of mi-nor league baseball, and tied for fourth in batting average (.311), the second best among all Cin-cinnati Reds minor leaguers. He was also selected to the Midwest League All-Star game in 2000.

Stegall is a native of Orlando, Fla. where he played high school baseball at Lake Brantley High School, and was inducted into the Lake Brantley High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He earned his bachelors degree in History/Geography from Cumberland in 2002 and a Master of Science degree in Social Studies Education from Nova Southeastern. He resides in DeLand, Fla. with his wife Laura and daughters Sarah and Ashtyn, and son Brady.

After being hired as Embry-Riddles head baseball coach in 2007, it did not take Randy Stegall long to determine who he wanted to have as his assistant coach. In his opinion, his brother Chuck was the perfect person to join him in the dugout. The Stegall partnership was one that had already proven to be successful as the brothers coached in tandem at Indiana Tech in 2006-07.

During his first year at Embry-Riddle, Chuck Stegall helped his brother lead the Eagles to their sixth ap-pearance in seven seasons at the NAIA World Series after sweeping the NAIA Region XIV Tournament and winning the conference title with an 18-3 league record and 44-18 overall mark.

In 2009, the Eagles repeated as conference champions and returned to Lewiston, Idaho, home of the Avista-NAIA World Series, after compiling a 3-0 record in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.

In 2010, Embry-Riddle had one of their best years under the Stegalls, finishing 47-19 overall and making it to the final four at the NAIA World Series. The Eagles won both The Sun Conference regular season and tournament crowns and claimed their third straight trip to Lewiston with a National Championship Opening Round title in Daytona Beach.

2011 included a number of firsts for the Stegalls, who earned their first 50-win season, and were ranked No. 1 in the NAIA over the final three weeks of the regular season. ERAU finished 51-11 overall, includ-ing a Sun Conference record 24-3 in league play. The Blue and Gold advanced all the way to the Avista-NAIA World Series where the Eagles placed fifth.

During the 2012 campaign, the Eagles captured their fifth straight and 13th overall Sun Conference regular season title and made the 11th trip to the NAIA World Series in program history. Stegall helped lead the Eagles to a 43-18 finish, the 22nd consecutive winning season in Embry-Riddle history and the programs 14th 40+ win season.

The 2013 season was yet another notch in the Stegall brothers coaching belt as the Eagles finished 50-15, making their sixth consecutive trip to the NAIA World Series after claiming the programs 14th Sun Conference regular season title and the fourth league tournament title.

The 2014 campaign saw the Eagles once again claim The Sun Conference regular season crown, posting a 22-5 record in league play. The Blue and Gold fell in the title game of the conference tournament, but still was chosen to host an Opening Round for the sixth time in as many seasons. After coming out of the losers bracket to force a winner-take-all contest against Southern Poly, the Eagles postseason run stopped short of the World Series for the first time in the Stegalls time at Embry-Riddle.

In 2007, Stegall helped guide the Indiana Tech Warriors to a 40-15-1 record, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles and a No. 20 ranking in the final NAIA poll.

Prior to going to Indiana Tech, Stegall spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Neosho County Community College in Kansas. During his tenure at NCCC, the Panthers captured a Jayhawk East Championship and finished third in the Region VI race in 2006. He helped coach six All-Conference players, two All-Region selections, two All-Americans, a Rawlings Big Stick Award winner, and the 2006 Junior College Player of the Year. Under his guidance, Panther play-ers broke 13 of the schools 22 hitting records.

Stegall has also coached a variety of summer league teams, including the Sandlot Wooden Bat League in Nashville, Tenn., and the Lake Brantley American Legion summer baseball team, whic
