UNIVERSITY

RESEARCH

I am a qualified Italian architect, ARB registered in May 2014, based in London since 2010. I am currently working with V&V (interior design and property developer company) on different residential projects. I have been pas-sionately working for seven years, two in Italy and five in UK to large commercial offices and residential projects through different stages and styles. I always welcome new challenges to progress my career.

I am working to different traditional and contemporary houses in London and Cobham. designing Victorian de-tails for traditional new homes, experiencing on site, working with planning consultants, suppliers, engineers team, interior designers. The design process goes through planning and real time 3D visualisation. Complying with Code 4 and sustainable home concept, UK building regulation and cost ratio analysis. My experience in this practice includes a conversion in revisited Victorian style of a plot of seven semi-detached houses, a traditional mansion house, detailing and for a large contemporary house, assisting the building process in Wimbledon. Design for mouldings, architraves, porches, eaves, dentils, and also contemporary and mixed style façades

Working with Michael Winsley and Simon Sturgis Directors I was involved mainly in Commercial Offices, Residen-tial and Mixed Use projects principally in London. Assisting design of large and small projects, from feasibility studies to tender package. large contemporary of-fices and interiors complying BREEAM, energy performance. Solving complicate planning issues for historical and commercial buildings. Visuals and presentations that I produced were also an important part during the planning process. I have been attending regular RIBA CPD events. (VectorWorks 2013, part of BCO and Building Regulation part B, K, M1/M2, F, L ) CARBON EMISSION Between May and September 2013, I was part of the Sturgis Carbon Profiling LLP team, working on 42 planning applications, refurbishment and re-development projects on Listed Buildings and buildings within Conservation Areas in Belgravia and Mayfair. Retrofitting and transforming damaged Victorian and Georgian buildings, to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, enhancing biodiversity with green roofs, recovering energy with solar PV panels.

With Stanza design I was working in a residential and small commercial projects, assisting planning and technical drawings ( VectorWorks 2009-2010), including details and construction packages. It was a great experience assist-ing the director in all design process. My experience with RDA Architect included studies for some residential and public projects in London , working with 3D models and visuals , assisting the planning the planning process and a interesting reconstruction of an ancient city in 3D for Al Jazeera Film Documentary “ Lifta Reborn”.

In Italy (2007) I worked with Di Bartolo Architects, Gianmarco Toscano Design, Roberto Licata Design, Pirruccio Practice for residential and commercial projects, design of furniture and interiors.

4REVIT SKILLS

I have been working with Autodesk Revit 2013since October 2014.

I am able to use Revit for 3D modeling and 2D drawing.

I can create both simple and complex 3D masses for studies, schedule of quantities and areas, 3D components and furniture families.

3D - 2D - DETAILING - PARAMETRES

I can use levels and reference planes to assign parameters to the project, creating high level of details using section views and annotate tools.

I can create building projects with customized walls, roofs and floors ( assembling layers and elements as bricks, blockworks, insulation, finishes).

I can easily create complex walls, floors and roofs from masses or surfaces.

SOLVING PLANNING ISSUES

There were some difficulties with the previous planning pro-cess regarding the orientation of the two buildings on the east side and some issues with the symmetry.

These were solved by proposing a new layout which I have documented on the right hand side.

East elevation before

East elevation after

TRANSFORMING A SCENARIO

My contribution to this seven house development project was to enhance the style and the appearance of the pro-posed buildings.

I choose a Victorian style which matched the expectation of the client and transformed the previous unanimous look into a successful proposal.

The amendments include larger Victorian sash windows with precast stone surroundings, new balconies under the gables, customised stone rails, porches and mouldings.

My proposal for the rear facade was a mixed style of contem-porary and a continuity of the Victorian appearence.

site plan before site plan after

PROPOSING BETTER INTERIORS

In enhancing the exteriors, It was inevitable to solve some space issues, as the symmetry of the plans and the staircases.

Each building is comprehensive of two semi detached houses,The party wall meant that it had to be situated in the middle. This generated a perfect symmetry in the facades.

One of the interior amendments was onto the rear, I created a open plan kitchen-dining-and family room with an elegant spiral staircase that lead into a vast basement complete with Cinema room and gym amongst other amenities.

PROPOSED BUILDINGS CONSTRUCT ABILITY OPTIONS

This project was essentially based on the design and research of the traditional style.

However through this research I continuously paid attention to the construction implications. I used this research to analyse and designate the best option.

For example the sash windows were a important design aspect of this type of building style.

To achieve the best outcome I composed details which helped me explain how to build the surrounding stone and determine the wall sizes.

These fundamental details were used as crucial parameters and drove the most important decisions.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATERIALS

Materials were also crucial to this project as the site is under the conservation area in Wimbledon.

The site was composed of a original Victorian house (shown as the retained north-west building.)

This and in conjunction with the with traditional styled sur-rounding buildings principally Victorian and Georgian, played a crucial part in determining the material choices. darrk blue roof slates creamy portland stone flemish red bricks

CREATING STYLES OPTIONS

Even though the early proposal was a generic outline, not specifying in details the appearance, it was necessary to review some crucial aspect.

Such as the extension on the rear ground floor to the garden whereby I created balconies in the front, rear and side facade.

One important aspect was the connection of the roof and gables to the rest of the building. This I had to achieve without compromising the integrity and appearance of the entire facade.

The solution was to start the gable from the top cornice above the first floor.

WORKING ON SITE

Peek Crescent house is located in Wimbledon, four storeys tra-ditional building under construction, including a basement and a large garden.

I was called to solve some issue during the building process, initially regarding the round windows location, and later for the gable cornice and the pavement details connecting the ground floor to the garden.

SKETCHING ISSUES

I started a comparison between the site in progress survey and the construction drawings.

I found out that the building workers built an higher window sill ( by two brick courses) so the opening was too close to the gables.

General sketch survey of the second floor opening.

SOLVING FACADE ISSUE ON SITE

By reaserching and confronting all pieces of information I managed to prevent the wrong gable cornice specification and installment that was previosly produced by another company.

CREATING NEW GABLE CORNICES

I produced an alternative option and agreed with Bannersgate Engineers that it was stable and compatible with the rest of the roof construction.

That starts a chain of amendments which affected also the size of the dentil. ( see next page).

WORKING WITH THE LANDSCAPE DESIGNER

I was working with Marc Piechocky, landscape designer at V&V, to coordinate and supply missing information and details during the external footpath construction.

Assisting the site manager I produced some details according to the client preference.

I proposed a grey durable stone for exterior suitable for the pave-ment and the external staircase connection the basement to the upper garden.

The choice was to specify a 30 mm thick portland stone, consequen-tially the site manager was able to calculate accurately the new pave-ment level and install the surrounding french door stones.

Landscape plan.

Part of the basement floor plan. Details of external pavement section.

6My experience at V&V included assisting the site manager’s during the construction process, developing solutions and details to solve particular issues in a very short time.

All my proposals were successfully built.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS

7RETROFITTING HISTORIC BUILDINGS

Many project with Sturgis Associates LLP between August 2013 and December 2013 were located in Mayfair and Belgravia.

I was proposing alterations to existing graded II lis-ted buildings in conservation area, retrofit projects to enhance the energy performance and the SAP rate including CO2 emissions.

The proposed alteration included floors, roofs, insulation to the walls, secondary glazing, natural ventilation, solar PV panels.
