Alex Crozier is in his 24th year as the head coach of the Cal Poly

women’s soccer program. He’s the Mustangs’ first and only coach since the school began playing at the inter-collegiate level in 1992.

His teams have gone 266-151-42 overall, including six NCAA Tourna-ment appearances.

Crozier came into the 2014 season ranked No. 30 all-time nationally in ca-reer coaching victories (No. 2 among active coaches in California). The longest-tenured coach at Cal Poly, he also has the most career victories in Big West play among the conference’s coaches (97 over 19 seasons, part of a .690 winning percentage). In all, Cro-zier’s players have earned All-Big West honors a combined 118 times, the most of any member school since the forma-tion of the league in 1996.

He has also coached three NSCAA All-Americans at Cal Poly, in addition to 21 other student-athletes who were also chosen for all-regional status.

Most recently, 2014 saw the Mus-tangs lead the conference in scoring for the second season in a row while also ranking in the league’s top half in few-est times conceded and shutouts.

Elise Krieghoff was chosen as the Disney/NSCAA National co-Player of the Week on Sept. 23, a day after be-

ing featured by ESPNW as one of five players to know in college soccer.

Then on Oct. 19, the junior had ESPN’s “SportsCenter” No. 3 Play of the Day with a dramatic game-winning strike at UC Riverside, two weeks be-fore being added to the Missouri Ath-letic Club Hermann Trophy candidate pool (joining 42 others in consider-ation for the national player of the year award).

While leading the Big West in goals for the third consecutive year, Krieghoff broke the school’s career record, up-ping her total to 46, tied for the third-most among all Division I players enter-ing 2015.

Also in 2014, sophomore midfield-er Megan Abutin ranked ninth nation-ally in assists, equaling the program’s single-season record with 12.

In 2013, Crozier guided the Mus-tangs to the regular-season Big West championship with a 7-1-0 record, part of bringing Cal Poly’s run against con-

ference opponents over the past three seasons to 18-5-2.

As a sophomore, Krieghoff tallied 21 times, earning the NCAA plaque as the nation’s leading goal scorer on a per-match basis (1.105). Afterward,

Alex Crozier, Cal Poly’s head coach since the program’s inaugural season of 1992, has led the Mustangs to a total of 11 conference championships whether on a regular-season or tournament basis.

she was invited to attend the U-23 Na-tional Team camp in June at the Olym-pic Training Center in Chula Vista.

Additionally, senior midfielder and defender Jordyn Zander won Cal Poly’s Sportsmanship Award among all of the school’s women’s sports, and in May of 2014, the team as a whole earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award for ex-ceptional academic achievement (after compiling a perfect Academic Progress Rate score of 1,000, placing its multi-year APR in the top 10 percent across the country).

Off the pitch, Crozier has seen his players earn all-academic honors from the conference 62 times. Also since 1998-99, the program has had four Academic All-Americans, two Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year, two Cal Poly Scholar-Athletes of the Year and four NCAA Leadership Conference nominees.

Crozier, a four-time Big West Coach of the Year, also led Cal Poly to the conference title in 2009, with anoth-er 7-1-0 mark (14-5-1 overall).

During that championship run, se-nior goalkeeper Coral Hoover finished second in the nation in save percent-age, at .919, still the 17th-best single-season figure in the 33-year history of Division I. Hoover was a TopDrawer-Soccer.com National Team of the Sea-son honorable mention that year.

It also included the Cal Poly de-but for Cici Kobinski, who became the league’s midfielder of the year by 2012. After graduating, Kobinski went on to star as a winger for Guam, posting two goals and two assists as the Masakåda advanced to the semifinal stage of the 2014 East Asian Cup (making the sixth-largest jump among all 133 teams in FIFA’s rankings).

The 2009 season also saw the Mustangs earn a memorable 1-0 over-time win over a No. 7-ranked Cal team featuring Alex Morgan.

Putting together challenging schedules has long been a staple of the program, which between 2013 and 2014 played four matches televised on

either ESPN3 or the Pac-12 Network, and in the latter year, limited a trio of sides ranked in the top 15 to two goals each.

On two occasions, Cal Poly has hosted the defending College Cup champion in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, losing 1-0 both times (vs. No. 3 Santa Clara in 2002 and No. 1 North Carolina in 2010).

The Mustangs played against five members of the USWNT from the 2011 World Cup when they were in college, plus five more players who were on the American roster as of the spring of 2015. From 2006 through 2011, Cal Poly had four wins and two draws against teams ranked in the Top 25.

Other non-conference fixtures over the years have seen the Mustangs claim tournament titles at venues in-cluding Missouri (at the 1998 Nike Ti-ger Invitational), Montana (the 2003 Diadora Cup), Purdue (the 2005 Boil-ermaker Challenge Cup), Hawai’i (the 2010 OHANA Resorts No Ka Oi Tour-nament) and Portland State (the 2011 Viking Classic).

In 2003, the Mustangs set a team record by going 18-2-2, No. 2 in the country that season for winning per-centage. They finished ranked No. 20 in the final Soccer America poll, and of the 22 matches, 15 were won by shut-out, a ratio that was No. 4 in the nation and established a still-standing all-time Big West record.

That season also saw the emer-gence of forward Sharon Day, who earned the conference tournament MVP award. Day, a two-sport star, has since gone on to qualify for two Olym-pic Games competing in track and field.

Cal Poly first cracked the coaches association Top 25 poll at the Division I level in 1995, before doing so again in 1997, a year in which another Mus-tang up top, Gina Oceguera, won the overall Big West Player of the Year award. Oceguera went on to play in the 1999 World Cup representing Mexico. The ensuing fall also culminated with a milestone for the Mustangs, who de-

feated Fresno State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 2-1. The fol-lowing winter, Oceguera was drafted by the San Diego Spirit before winning a WUSA title with the Bay Area Cyber-Rays.

In 1993, Cal Poly’s final season at the Division II level before mov-ing to Division I, Crozier coached the program to the national championship match in Miami, earning the NSCAA National Coach of the Year award. De-spite a loss in the final, Mustang for-ward Kolleen Kassis was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player on offense.

Crozier, a 1984 Cal Poly graduate with a civil engineering degree, was an assistant for Santa Clara in 1991, and prior to that, he coached the West Val-ley FC Premier U-19 girls to the State Cup championship and a third-place national finish.

As a midfielder at Cal Poly, Crozier was a team captain in 1982 and 1983, earning all-conference honors both years, as well as All-Far West Region distinction as a junior. He also coached the Cal Poly women’s soccer team from 1979-83 when it played as a club in the California Collegiate Women’s Soccer Conference.

Before his Mustang career, Cro-zier won three consecutive CIF Cen-tral Section championships at Bullard High School in Fresno, where he was a captain and earned team MVP and all-league accolades in 1979.

Crozier’s coaching impact has been felt at several programs around the nation. Dan Tobias, formerly the head coach at Arizona and Washing-ton State, previously served as an as-sistant under Crozier. Others include Wendy Jones, a forward for Crozier who coached at Boise State, and P.J. Woolridge, another former assistant who went on to coach at San Diego, USC and now UC Irvine.

Crozier resides in San Luis Obispo with his wife, Judy King, and the cou-ple’s sons, Dan and Bo, and daughter, Angie.

Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator

Third Season • UCSB, 2011

In his first two years with the pro-gram, Bernardo Silva has helped

Cal Poly win three times as many con-ference games as it has lost (12-4-0), a stretch that includes the Big West championship in 2013.

As well as his role as recruiting coordinator, Silva’s focus with the Mus-tangs is specialized in the areas of technical development, fitness & con-

ditioning and film breakdown.During his initial two seasons on

Alex Crozier’s staff, he has helped mentor four different NSCAA All-West Region honorees, plus nine other all-conference players. Additionally, in March of 2015 at the Cal South Awards Banquet in Long Beach, Silva was hon-ored as the organization’s Nike Devel-opmental Coach of the Year.

Prior to joining the women’s pro-gram, Silva worked with the Cal Poly men’s team as an assistant in 2012. He was part of a staff that matched the school record for Big West victo-ries (six) while reaching the conference tournament semifinals.

After relocating from Portugal to the United States at 18, Silva graduat-ed from UC Santa Barbara in 2011 with a degree in psychology and a double

minor in sports management and fit-ness instruction.

While completing his degree at UCSB, he also worked as a regional scout for the MLS’ New York Red Bulls, acquiring expertise in identifying, se-lecting and recommending collegiate players for the franchise.

An owner of a U.S. Soccer Federa-tion National C coaching license, Silva has also studied sport and exercise psychology at England’s Loughbor-ough University. In Great Britain, Silva added to his insight during an intern-ship with famed Scottish club Hearts FC, where he observed training ses-sions and staff collaboration meetings, and studied manager-player dynamics.

Silva also holds a personal training certificate from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Lindsey Smith is in her second year with Cal Poly’s coaching staff.In her first fall with the Mustangs

— not long after being named the 2014 Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table co-Soccer Player of the Year — the former goalkeeper was integral in Cal Poly having the Big West’s third-high-

est save percentage.Smith finished her senior season

at Westmont as a first-team NAIA All-American. She anchored the Warriors during their run to the 2013 national championship match in Alabama.

As a senior, when she was named the co-Golden State Athletic Confer-ence Player of the Year, Smith finished with a 0.56 GAA, No. 2 in school his-tory and second-best in the country. In Westmont’s two postseason games that came down to penalties, she blocked a combined four out of 11 at-tempts as the Warriors advanced each time.

Smith, a three-time All-GSAC hon-oree from Pleasanton, finished her ca-reer with 61 starts between the posts, a

school record.Westmont also held local youth

clinics after home games, and during the 2012-13 school year, fundraised for a trip to Africa. Through a partnership with the Sports Outreach Institute, the team spent more than two weeks work-ing with communities in Nairobi, Kam-pala and Gulu.

For its effort on and off the field, Westmont earned the NAIA Champions of Character Award, an honor given an-nually to a team for displaying integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and service.

Smith earned a degree in history (with a focus in secondary education), graduating in 2013.

During Kathleen Lemieux’s six years as an assistant at Cal Poly, the

Mustangs have gone 31-15-3 in the Big West Conference.

While helping with all facets of the program, Lemieux has particu-

larly specialized in mentoring the de-fense, which has imposed 35 shutouts throughout her tenure.

She has coached three NSCAA All-West Region players in the Cal Poly back line (including Cristina Farrington most recently in the 2013 champion-ship season), as well as eight others who’ve earned all-conference status.

Twice since 2010, the Mustangs have tied the all-time school record by not allowing a shot on goal during an entire match.

Lemieux was a defender at UC Ir-vine, where she started 71 times, which tied for No. 3 in program history.

She was a team captain as a se-

nior in 2008, and was the squad’s De-fensive MVP in each of her final two seasons.

As a junior, she was also named an All-Big West honorable mention after leading the Anteaters through a 10-shutout season that reached the semifinals of the conference tourna-ment.

Lemieux made the conference’s All-Academic Team every year while at UCI.

She also made the Dean’s List for 10 quarters, was a member of the Golden Key Honor Society, and earned a degree in psychology, graduating with honors in 2009.

Volunteer AssistantFirst Season

Cal Poly, 2015

Soon after completing his master’s degree in kinesiology and exercise

science at Cal Poly in June of 2015, Scott Williams joined the Mustang women’s soccer staff as a volunteer assistant.

Also concurrently serving as the men’s team’s director of operations, he helped their program post its fourth winning season over a five-year stretch in 2014.

Williams came to San Luis Obispo after spending two seasons coaching at Westmont, where he was respon-sible for mentoring the goalkeepers,

overseeing back line development, focusing on strength and conditioning regimen, and helping with the recruit-ing process. During his playing career with the Warriors (which included a run to the quarterfinals of the 2008 NAIA National Championship Tournament), Williams was a four-year starter at left back and midfielder.

Originally from Albuquerque, N.M., Williams graduated with his baccalau-reate degree in kinesiology from West-mont in 2011.

The Home of Cal Poly Women’s SoccerIn 2006, Alex G. Spanos Stadium

was renovated on the California Ave-nue side, and three years later, a video board was installed behind the north goal.

The stadium also houses Cal Poly football and men’s soccer games, as well as ceremonies for graduation, Week of Welcome and other celebra-tory events.

On Sept. 10, 2010, a record crowd of 2,532 watched Cal Poly host No. 1-ranked North Carolina, the two-time defending national champion. (The Tar Heels won 1-0, scoring in the 49th minute.)

The Friday-night attendance figure eclipsed the old mark of 2,299, set Aug. 27, 2004 for a 2-2 draw against No. 3 Santa Clara.

Cal Poly, which placed multiple players on the NSCAA All-West Region list for the second year in a row, saw its senior class graduate with more than twice as many Big West wins as losses (21-10-2).

Along the way in 2015, the team led the league in goals scored (32) and assists within conference play (15), and ranked in the top half of the Big West in both fewest times conceded (eight) and shutouts (three).

Community Outreach

Cal Poly Women’s Soccer takes time every season to serve our commu-nity.

By spending time volunteering, we gain leadership skills, share the women’s love of soccer and, most importantly, get to know and support our community.

Special Olympics

The Special Olympics is an organi-zation that welcomes all athletes, regard-less of their ability or disability.

Our team helped out during the San Luis Obispo Regional Games, doing ev-erything from set-up to cheering on local athletes competing.

Local Elementary Schools

Our team prides itself on not only be-ing great soccer players but also fantas-tic students. We share that commitment with local elementary schools, teaching children about being active and spending time reading in class.

SLO Food Bank

The local food bank serves all of San Luis Obispo County by providing nu-tritious food to people in need.

To support them, the team went out to inspect and sort donated food before it was distributed.

United Methodist Children’sCenter Rummage Sale

Every year around spring cleaning time, UMCC holds a huge rummage sale, from which all proceeds support a Chil-dren’s Center staff enrichment program.

Putting their muscles to work, the team comes in as a clean-up crew and helps load out the rest of the donated items for Goodwill.

Cal Poly’s Brooke Flamson was selected as a third-team NSCAA All-American after her senior season in 2002.

Flamson, who started 60 consecu-tive matches during her career, also earned back-to-back Big West Con-ference Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2001 and 2002.

Sierra Simmons was the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year in both 2003 and 2004.

After a highly decorated two-sport career at Cal Poly, Sharon Day went on to compete at two Olympics in track and field — first in the high jump in Beijing in 2008, and then in the heptathlon in London in 2012.

Midway through her junior season of 2014, Elise Krieghoff was added to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate pool, becoming one of 43 players eligible for the national player of the year award.

Krieghoff, named the co-Disney/NSCAA National Player of the Week on Sept. 23, 2014, also broke the all-time Big West record for most conference player-of-the-week accolades ever accrued (reach-ing eight that season).

In May of 2014, she was one of 26 players invited to the U.S. Women’s National Team U-23 training camp held in Chula Vista that June.

Whether on a single-game, season or career basis, Krieghoff will enter her senior year already owning six different school goals re-cords, including most all-time (46).

Kolleen Kassis set several Cal Poly records. A member of the first four Mustang squads, Kas-sis helped lead Cal Poly to the 1993 Division II national championship match (above, left) in Miami Shores, Fla.

She earned Most Outstanding Offensive Player honors for the tournament.

After the program moved to the Division I level, Kassis was an NSCAA All-West Region first-team selection in both 1994 and 1995.

In 1995, the Mustangs finished the year ranked No. 21 in the nation in the Intercollegiate Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

Kassis (now Kolleen McNamee) was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

In the summer before her senior season at Cal Poly, Gina Oce-guera played in three matches during the 1999 World Cup as a sweeper for Mexico.

A former Big West Conference Player of the Year, Oceguera was later chosen in the fifth round (with the 35th overall pick) by the San Diego Spirit in the 2000 Women’s United Soccer Association Draft.

She also played for the Bay Area CyberRays in the WUSA’s inaugural 2001 season, and started at defender in the league champi-onship match against the Atlanta Beat at Foxboro Stadium in Massa-chusetts.

In front of a crowd of 21,078, the CyberRays won the first WUSA title on penalty kicks, 4-2, following a 3-3 draw through overtime.

NOTE REGARDING OVERTIMES: Through 1996, in the regular season, there were two 15-minute supplements that were fully played out. However, in the postseason, if the game was not followed the next day by another game, the two 15-minute supplements were followed by — if necessary — two ensuing 15-minute golden goal periods, followed by penalties.

In the event that there was a game the next day, the only difference is the pair of sudden-victory periods was skipped, and it went to a penalty kick session immedi-ately after the first extra 30 minutes.

From 1997 to 2001, for regular-season matches, there were two 15-minute golden goal periods, but the postseason format remained the same as it had been in previous years. Then in 2002, the current format was implemented: two 10-minute golden goal periods, followed by penalties in the postseason only.

During her senior season of 2009, Coral Hoover (left) compiled a .919 save percentage, which, as of 2015, ranked nationally as the 17th-best single-sea-son figure in the 33-year history of Division I.

She helped shut out a No. 7-ranked Cal side led by Alex Morgan, 1-0, in an overtime win for the Mus-tangs on Sept. 25. It was one of her program-record 11 shutouts over the course of that season.
