The CAHS Series Events

This program focuses on the students pursuing degrees in agriculture and dietetics. It offers opportunities to come together and share the uniqueness of the CAHS culture as the land-grant college of PVAMU. We like to call it “the CAHS Difference”. The forums are intended to inform, engage and nurture the success of students entering our college from freshman to senior year. Activities include peer and mentor panel discussions, keynote speakers, poster presentations, show and tell demonstrations, team-building, networking and experiential learning activities from all areas of the CAHS including academics, extension and research.

The CAHS ResearchSeminarSeries

This speaker presentation series demonstrates and underscores the land-grant mission for our academic institution. Through presentation of thought provoking research topics, it is intended to stimulate intellectual discussion amongst our academic faculty, research scientists, research specialists, extension program leaders and extension specialists about the innovative research activities conducted in our Cooperative Agricultural Research Center and carried out by our Extension Outreach programs.

This engaging seminar series hosted by the communications staff enhances the knowledge base of the CAHS staff on various topics to increase productivity. Short 30 minute mid–week presentations are prepared to demonstrate new technology, tips and techniques in office administration and strengthen camaraderie within the members of the CAHS to build a more cohesive organization. It incorporates hands-on computer demos, entertaining skits, presentation of historical events and much more.

Facilitated by our Family and Consumer Science Program

Specialists, this series is intended to teach options for living a healthier

lifestyle at work and at home. Its emphasis is on improving the well-being of your mental,

physical and nutritional health. Among the various topics, you will learn how to live well in finances and get tips to manage all the technology that bombards your attention and increases stress in your daily life leading to other

potentially health threatening diseases.

The Total You Wellness Series

Early education is the key to avoiding the fiscal pitfalls that most college students encounter even before depositing their first paycheck or showing up for the first day on the job.This weekly workshop hosted by the Community and Economic Development unit in the Cooperative Extension Program gives guidance on essential financial topics. “Bank on It” discusses how to choose a bank. “Loan to Own” covers differences in the types of loans available on the market. Credit recovery is another hot topic that always gets the conversation going.Students gain valuable information about life skills they can practice while in college and beyond the classroom.

‘Outlook on Agriculture’ also broadcasted on the airwaves of traditional FM radio, KPVU 91.3, where the show focused on issues relevant to PVAMU and the surrounding counties helping to fulfill our promise to foster academic excellence, increase health and wellbeing and enhance economic opportunities for the citizens of Texas.

This radio has grown since 2010 and has established new reach on Sirius XM Radio as well as live links on www.pvamu.edu/cahs. Each week the hosts will interview faculty, a program leader or specialist from the academic, research and extension staff to talk about the solutions we provide to meet the needs and change the lives of our clientele.

‘Outlook on Agriculture’ (OOA) got its humble beginnings from an online show started in 2010 aired at www.blogtalkradio.com/pvcooperativeextension. Since its inception, the mission has always been to inform and engage the local community about all the opportunities and benefits offered by the CAHS.

The CAHS Annual Events

Career Development Events (CDE) build on what is learned in agricultural classes and encourage FFA members to put their knowledge into practice. These events are designed to help students prepare for a career in agriculture by testing and challenging the student’s technical, leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills as well as their knowledge of the subject matter.

CDEs answer the question, “When will I use this knowledge in the real world?”Many CDEs are qualifying events for the National FFA CDE competition and/or offer scholarship opportunities

The Soil Moisture Sensing Technology Conference will focus on current and

future research directions in soil moisture in-situ sensing technology with special

emphasis on sensor reliability and measurement scale dependency. This three day conference will bring together eminent scientists to discuss field applications and techniques for new generation soil moisture and thermal probes

to ensure reliable data with adequate measurement volume.

The College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, College of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences work together to host the Annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Mathematics (STEAM) Research Symposium intended to inspire and encourage our students to move further in their pursuit of a STEAM based career or graduate degree.

The Symposium provides student participants a purposeful opportunity to discuss their own research projects in one-on-one settings with other scientists in their respective field. The brightest and most innovative undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit abstracts in their designated areas of study, compete for awards and confer their findings with peers, administrators and local communities.

Led by the 4-H and Youth Development unit in the Cooperative Extension Program, the CAHS participates in this annual event hosted by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to increase awareness about the aspects of the

college that represent the best of our academics, research and extension programs to youth of all ages.

This major annual event originated as Goat Field Day only later to combine activities with another major eventknown as Agriculture Field Day. The program focuses not only on programs in our flagship International Goat Research Center but other types of farming.

Once again in 2013, the event expanded to include not only staff on campus but also community organizations interested in promoting locally grown foods and good nutrition. It includes talks on marketing, healthy living, and legislative issues.

Guided by the 4-H and Youth Development unit in the Cooperative Extension Program, 4-H Clubs located in urban areas designated as food deserts are invited to the PVAMU campus to participate in challenges focused on careers in Science Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Math.

The games help students concentrate on sustainable solutions that pro-mote healthier lifestyles and build up their local neighborhoods through the study of agriculture and human sciences. These solutions include community gardens, food banks, bio-fuel, composting and transporta-tion.

The Research Extension Apprentice Program (REAP) is a twelve-day summer camp for high school juniors and seniors to provide enriching and rewarding experiences that help today’s generation of college bound students better understand careers in agriculture and the food sciences. It includes a field trip experience and numerous opportunities to engage and interact with the research and extension staff to expose them to the work routines as well as outcomes of the research

and community outreach programs conducted by agriculture professionals.

Cooperative Extension Program county agents invite youth, ages 14 to 18, from their perspective counties around the state to come for a visit to the PVAMU campus. The young people attend the 2-day camp during summer vacation chaperoned by the extension agents and volunteers. They have an enjoyable experience some for the first timeaway from home meeting new friends, learning about college campus life, developing leadership skills and gaining awareness about careers in animal science, agri-business, horticulture, nutrition, and food services through the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences

Emergency Management Summit

The Summit provides an integrated forum for organized discussion and certification opportunities among community leaders from Waller County, the City of Prairie View officials and University administrators.

It addresses issues concerning emergency management that impact the University, Residential and Business Communities in the local region.

The Lindsey Weatherspoon Agricultural Breakfast is an event dedicated to reuniting the faculty, staff, students, alumni, researchers, farmers, educators and extension agents. The event’s primary focus is to raise funds for the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences to fund scholarships, training and research equipment and community programs.

The Invitational FFA Leadership Development Events focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in

public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of

agriculture and the FFA organization. Team and individual events are used to reinforce what is taught in agricultural science classrooms. All LDE events have elimination rounds at the district and area levels before the state level competition. The LDE’s focus on discussion of current agricultural issues,

chapter conducting (Parliamentary Procedure), FFA Creed speaking,

public relations, broadcasting and more. The Invitational LDE provides students additional learning experiences in preparation for District, State

and National events.

Leadership Development EventsOctober2015

Panthers United, is a university recognized student organization supported by the College of Agriculture and Human Science, providing the students with opportunities to learn how to engage the community and familiarize the participants with the role of an extension agent. The students will be solicited from various disciplines to engage in learning opportunities as it relates to Agriculture and Human Sciences, volunteerism, and community advocacy. Many of the students are freshmen students and on average 10% of the students are undeclared majors.
