This past year, the ACP realized several important milestones. Serving as ACP President, I was fortunate to be a part of that.

Foremost among those milestones was the passage of the revised Standards for Advanced Education Programs in Prosthodontics by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. For those entering our specialty, the future is bright as all prosthodontists will be trained to place implants to surgical competency, as defined in these standards. This will directly improve patient outcomes. Simultaneously, it will elevate the care delivery model for prosthodontists, placing us at the forefront of specialty care.

Some of the most critical data that was used in our CODA presentation came from a survey of residents and recent graduates about their experiences with and views of surgical implant placement. To everyone who participated in that survey and to everyone who wrote a letter of support for the standards, I want to thank you for helping move this key mission goal forward. Once our standards passed, the ACP made available emergency funding for any program scheduled for a CODA site visit in 2016 to assist in achieving compliance.

Our specialty and College are growing in strength and numbers. We have over 3800 members and affiliates, a great milestone. The Annual Session was the third largest in College history as it continues to attract attendees both nationally and internationally. Our unique predoctoral and postdoctoral spring and fall educators meetings included representation from over 80 institutions. The College is viewed as a model for this kind of meeting amongst our corporate supporters and leaders in education today.

A great concern to our leadership is student debt. In response to this looming problem, a Task Force for Graduate Medical

Education Reimbursement was created. This task force was charged with investigating funding for our prosthodontic residents on a national level. Significant strides were made and discussions were held with legal representation in D.C. The ACP Board of Directors voted to fund two projects that would create templates and tools to be used by new programs and existing ones. These will potentially aid in securing GME funding. There was also discussion of seeking legislative changes that would open other avenues of funding.

During numerous meetings with our sister organizations and other specialties, it was with great pride that I announced we have 100% of all prosthodontic residents as members of the College. Residents were given the right to vote in all College matters as a result of a bylaws change. We listened to our residents and the Mock Board Exam was redesigned, optimized, and launched as the “ACP National Prosthodontic Resident Exam”, administered to nearly 500 current prosthodontic residents. Their enthusiasm and passion was evident in the success of National Prosthodontics Awareness Week this past year.

With the cooperative support of the ACPEF and the ACP, a member/stakeholder survey was undertaken in 2015. We were very pleased to learn that membership satisfaction is very high. One of the highest priorities for our members is the emergence of digital dentistry and its implementation in private practice. Our first Digital Dentistry Symposium was held in February 2015, just prior to the Chicago Midwinter Meeting. It was a sell-out! The feedback was extremely positive from attendees and our corporate supporters. The planning of the next symposium commenced immediately.

2015: A Defining Year for the American College of Prosthodontists

We continue to build relationships and attract visionary supporters in the corporate arena. Our corporate supporters found the data from the aforementioned member/stakeholder survey meaningful to understanding how they are perceived by the membership. This feedback led to continued corporate support for residents and students to attend the Annual Session through the ACPEF while also funding research grants and awards.

With great excitement at our Annual Session, we announced a $1.25 million grant to the ACPEF from Henry Schein that will enable the ACP to develop a digital dentistry learning platform, with planned implementation in U.S. dental schools in 2017. The College has already accomplished a huge first step in this arena with the publication of Fundamentals of Occlusion, an e-textbook for iPads and Kindle Fire tablets that was supported by WhipMix. This is a landmark educational tool that will change the way occlusion and other subjects are taught.

Ours is an innovative specialty and we are dedicated to continuous improvement. Our ACP website (Prosthodontics.org) was completely redesigned making it more user-friendly while increasing its breadth and content. We are proud of our Journal of Prosthodontics, with a new Associate Editor-in-Chief on board, and we strive to improve our top-ranked member benefit. New ACP position statements were developed by a broad base of our membership on varied topics. These were evaluated and approved by the Board of Directors. In 2015, 12 new position statements were approved to communicate ACP policy on key issues and help to focus the ACP’s education and research efforts.

Building on the efforts of my predecessors, we continued to solidify strong professional

relationships with the American Dental Association and Academy of General Dentistry. In particular, at a November meeting (pictured on previous page), the AGD asked the ACP to develop web-based learning modules using our membership, with a vision to provide a diverse educational experience while defining when a patient should be referred to a specialist.

Our specialty continues to grow in media presence and placements. Through our talented and dedicated Central Office staff, we achieved media mentions in every state, on major TV stations, and in print. The Spokespersons Network continues its growth and was quoted across the U.S. and abroad. It is estimated that the ACP has received an ROI of $8.3 million in publicity and advertising value, with $537,000 from social media mentions, all through grassroots efforts embodied in our Spokespersons Network.

This year serving as your ACP President allowed me to witness the enormous strength and conviction of our membership. Over the course of the year, I visited with many section presidents and heard their concerns, hopes, and dreams. There was one resounding theme from all: they were committed to the College and its mission. Coupled with the shared vision of our corporate supporters, we have emerged as a leader in the dental profession. Gone are the days of questioning who we are and what we do. We are clear in our mission and goals, our resolve is not to be doubted, and our role is at the forefront.

As ACP President, I also had the opportunity to visit with many of our FORUM organizations. The message from those meetings was clear and consistent. We are looked to as the leader, the one they wish to partner with, while preserving their unique place in the discipline and specialty. The ACP needs to continue to develop these relationships, respect the history of each, and help them fulfill their missions.

I would like to express my most sincere appreciation and gratitude to the membership of the ACP for the honor of serving as your 45th president. It was a year of enormous accomplishments for our beloved College! I am humbled by the support and trust the membership demonstrated in me. Thank you for one of the most rewarding years in my professional career.

Sincerely,

Frank J. Tuminelli, DMD, FACP2015 ACP President

Prosthodontics is defined by continual growth and development, and the ACP’s 45th Annual Session in Orlando, Oct. 21-24, was built with that in mind.

ACP President Dr. Frank J. Tuminelli and Program Chair Dr. Jonathan Zamzok assembled a group of speakers who challenged the status quo and improved attendees’ understanding of how best to approach clinical treatment.

Scientific Sessions included: ▪ Updates in Prosthodontics ▪ Preservation vs. Replacement ▪ The Prosthodontist’s Role Revisited ▪ Innovations in Prosthodontic Therapy: Is Digital Dentistry Ready for

Prime Time? ▪ Controversies in Prosthodontic Therapy: Thinking Outside the Box ▪ The Laboratory Connection: Techniques, Innovations, and Pearls from

Digital Dentistry Symposium

With a capacity crowd of more than 120 attendees, the ACP’s first annual Digital Dentistry Symposium was an overwhelming success. Held in Chicago on Feb. 23-24, the symposium showcased state-of-the-art digital solutions for the treatment of restorative patients, including best practices and actual clinical workflows. Attendees included prosthodontists, dental technicians, and general dentists.

“This symposium showed that prosthodontists are taking a leadership position in the field of digital dentistry,” said Dr. Frank Tuminelli, 2015 ACP President. “Through these digital treatment technologies, we can realize significantly improved experiences and provide superior care for our patients.”

Thanks to Henry Schein, Ivoclar Vivadent, Nobel Biocare, and DENTSPLY Implants of North America for their sponsorship of the symposium.

Prosthodontic Review Course

The 2015 Prosthodontic Review Course was held in San Francisco, Sept. 12-13 with 93 attendees. Led by Dr. Steven Sadowsky, speakers demonstrated the integration of prosthodontic principles in successful clinical dentistry and reinforced the key prosthodontic treatment approaches that meet esthetic and functional goals expected by patients and clinicians.

Led by Dr. David A Felton, Editor-in-Chief, along with Dr. Radi Masri, Associate Editor-in-Chief, the Journal of Prosthodontics published eight issues (103 articles) in 2015. The editorial board reviewed a total of 629 new submissions and accepted 155 (25% acceptance rate). Review times in the Journal averaged just over one month from submission to receipt of first decision.

The Journal of Prosthodontics’ impact factor (a measure of a journal’s influence on the scientific literature) rose from 0.905 in 2012 to 1.071 in 2014 (the most recent listings released). The Journal rose four places to become the 56th ranked dentistry journal, as indexed by Thomson Scientific.

Full text downloads for the Journal increased from 136,518 to 145,259, a rise of 6%. The most accessed article, with over 2500 downloads, was “A systematic review of screw- versus cement-retained implant-supported fixed restorations.” The most-cited article (with 9 citations) was “Evaluation of zirconium-oxide-based ceramic single-unit posterior fixed dental prostheses generated with two CAD/CAM systems compared to porcelain-fused-to-metal single-unit posterior FDPs: A 5-year Clinical Prospective Study.”

The Journal’s second virtual issue, “Digital Dentistry in Prosthodontics” was released in the summer of 2015. Articles in this collection have been viewed more than 2360 times by 1,152 unique visitors between August 2015 and March 2016.

For 2015 (the most recent data available), total income, net income, and the royalty due to the ACP from John Wiley Publishing all increased vs. 2014. Journal of Prosthodontics articles now include an “Altmetric” rating, which measures an article’s influence beyond the scientific literature, by tracking appearances in social media, the press, and blogs.

The Journal offered 24 new online CE courses (1 credit hour each) based on published articles.

In 2014 (latest data available), 4,348 institutions purchased access to the Journal via either a traditional (title-by-title) subscription or Wiley license. Philanthropic initiatives extended low-cost or free access to 3,801 developing world institutions.

Led by Dr. Mathew T. Kattadiyil, Editor-in-Chief, along with Drs. Carl F. Driscoll and Susan E. Brackett as Associate Editors, the ACP Messenger published four issues in 2015.

Available in both print and tablet-optimized digital editions, the ACP Messenger seeks to inform the world of current prosthodontic trends, challenges, and successes.

Issues focused on subjects of interest to patients and prosthodontists alike, including several inspiring case presentations that showed the transformative possibilities of seeking care from a prosthodontist, along with reporting on costs of new technology, opening a practice, and completing an education in prosthodontics (Winter); the value of collaboration with dental laboratory technicians and members of the local business community (Spring); an in-depth interview with Dr. Herbert T. Shillingburg, Jr., the author of Fundamentals of Fixed Prosthodontics (Summer); and perspectives on new digital systems (Fall).

Traditional and social media mentions of 4 key terms keep growing

▪ From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2015, there were 9,197 traditional media mentions for prosthodontic(s) or prosthodontist(s) in 48 states per Cision. The Henry Schein press release on Oct. 23 as well as ACP press releases announcing awards contributed to the steady increase in traditional media metrics in 2015.

▪ From July 13 to Dec. 31, 2015, there were 17,072 social media mentions of ACP’s 4 key terms, with the bulk being on Twitter (10,803) and Instagram (3,687). This has been verified by Cision.

ACP circulated a variety of new videos on ACP’s YouTube Channel. This included ACP leaders’ Digital Dentistry Minutes. ACP publicized the Henry Schein $1.25 million grant to the ACP Education Foundation via an in-person press event during the Annual Session, issued a press release, and produced a video about the project titled “Prosthodontists to Develop Digital Dentistry Curriculum for Dental Schools” to educate members and the public.

The ACP has 60 Spokespersons Network members in America, Canada, and Italy. These media-trained prosthodontists are proactively raising public awareness and are ready to collaborate with the ADA Spokespersons, Dental Specialty Associations, non-profits, hospitals, dental schools, and corporate partners on oral health awareness.

PR Survey Highlights

▪ 28.8% of ACP members’ practice websites have a link to ACP’s consumer website GoToAPro.org.

▪ 54.5% of members are aware that liking the ACP Facebook page helps raise awareness as SEO terms.

▪ 84% of members responded “Yes” or “Somewhat” when asked whether they believe the ACP’s PR program has been successful.

ACP Position Statements were made available on the ACP website free to the oral health community and press. Approved position statements from 2015 include: Integrity in Prosthodontic Care; Access to Care; Oral Cancer Screening; Water Fluoridation; Dental Laboratory/Dentist Relationship; Eating Disorders and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease; Tobacco Use and Oral Health; Mouthguard Use in Sports; Corporate Dentistry; Board Certification Credentials; and The Frequency of Denture Replacement.

Being part of organized prosthodontics has been a central part of my professional life and sharing responsibilities for leadership as Chair of the ACP Education Foundation has provided new insights into the positive impact the specialty of prosthodontics makes in the communities of interest. I’m especially proud of our achievements and more proud of the courageous vision shared among our leaders and members.

Our capstone achievement this year represents the culmination of several years of effort to partner with Henry Schein in a focused program to promote digital dentistry through broad-based curriculum development and distribution among our educational programs nationwide. Supported by Henry Schein’s visionary $1.25 million dollar contribution to the ACPEF, our membership is now hard at work building a curriculum for dentistry. The new initiative is expected to be piloted by several dental schools beginning in 2017.

Another key achievement was this year’s contribution to a growing list of informational publications intended to inform the membership, the profession, and all of dentistry regarding matters key to patient care and well-being. Efforts made possible by partnerships with GSK and Colgate fueled the efforts of our membership leaders to publish a systematic review regarding denture stomatitis and guidelines for recall and maintenance of patients with tooth- and implant-borne prostheses respectively. An electronic textbook Fundamentals of Occlusion was published in partnership with WhipMix Corporation. More are on the editors’ desks.

Beyond these remarkable efforts, the ACPEF continues to support the vision and goals of the ACP. The predoctoral and postdoctoral prosthodontic educators met on April 17-18 in Chicago and on Oct. 21 in Orlando. The Joint Educators Conferences serve as a great meeting place to share ideas and insights between programs, from curriculum development and educational methodologies to assessments and blended learning. Participation from peers and corporate supporters make these meetings unique.

We also provide additional support to research and awarded Dr. Alireza Moshaverinia the 2015 GSK Prosthodontist Innovator Award for studies of tissue engineering. We continue to support residents to attend the Annual Session, and provide the Sharry Awards competition, ongoing development of Prosthopedia, and important surveys of the membership.

ACPEF Chair’s ReportBe a part of one of the greatest success stories in organized dentistry. Be a part of the ACPEF.

Recognition of individual service to and support of the specialty was displayed by the ACPEF 2015 Founders Society Awards, given to Dr. Thomas Taylor and Dr. David Felton. The ACPEF Board of Directors is composed of many talented volunteers who share a carefully crafted vision of our future and who create the energy to take us there. The insights from academia, industry, and practice contribute to strong directives that support our growth. This year, we will continue to discuss new issues facing our specialty and continue, through dialogues with our members (formal surveys to simple hallway conversations), to support the important steps required to build our future.

All of this effort, all of this inspiration, and all of this activity is underscored by a simple fact: the ACPEF is an effective foundation. Support comes from a variety of sources, but none is more valued than the direct support from our ACP members. This year, the ACPEF Annual Appeal raised nearly $220,000 from 440 donors to exceed our goal and far exceeding previous yearly accomplishments. This represents a much anticipated inflection point and hopefully points to participation by a majority of members in future Annual Appeals.

In 2015, the ACPEF passed an important milestone. The ACPEF Endowment has surpassed a $4,000,000 valuation and indicates that we will reach our $5,000,000 goal for 2018. This achievement imposes new responsibilities. One is to continue to build a culture of giving among our members so that the ACPEF can support greater aspirations for prosthodontics. The other is to nurture new leaders to continue this pathway to prominence in dentistry. In this year, give of yourself, share your ideas, collaborate with peers, and be a part of one of the greatest success stories in organized dentistry.

Be a part of the ACPEF.

Sincerely,

Lyndon F. Cooper, DDS, PhD, FACPACPEF Chair

Support for Education

A monumental commitment from Henry Schein was announced at the ACP Annual Session. This new partnership committed $1.25 million for the Foundation to provide a grant to an ACP committee for development of a groundbreaking new digital dentistry curriculum that will incorporate computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies. The new initiative is expected to be piloted by several dental schools beginning in 2017.

The Foundation sponsored the 2015 Postdoctoral Resident Support Program, a package of ACP educational resources for more than 620 prosthodontic residents. This program introduces residents to the community of prosthodontics and information necessary to maximize their training and education, and includes administration of a National Prosthodontic Resident Exam through the Advanced Prosthodontic Program Directors to help residents assess their knowledge. 376 residents took the exam in 2015.

248 prosthodontic residents received support to attend the 2015 ACP Annual Session through the Foundation, which also provided support for new graduate prosthodontic program development in schools of dentistry which currently have no program.

For predoctoral and postdoctoral prosthodontic educators, the Foundation hosted meetings on April 17-18 in Chicago, with 91 attendees representing 61 dental schools, and on Oct. 21 in Orlando, with 134 attendees representing 77 dental schools.

At the spring meeting, the predoctoral session theme was “Educational Methodologies and Assessments”, while the postdoctoral session focused on topics such as CODA Standards, Match and PASS, ADEA Prosthodontics Forum, exam updates, and sharing of ideas between programs. Together, the joint group also viewed presentations on Caries Risk Assessment / Treatment Synopsis.

In the fall, the predoctoral session included presentations on Blended Learning and OSCE Prosthodontic Competencies. The postdoctoral session included presentations on the Application of Digital Dentistry to a Grad Pros Program, Occlusion & TMD in the Prosthodontics Curriculum, and Match. In the joint session, predoctoral chair Dr. Leila Jahangiri led a panel discussion of prosthodontic deans and department chairs.

Support for Advancement of the Specialty

Drs. Mark Hutten and Alvin Wee co-chaired the 2015 Annual Appeal. All ACPEF funds support programs in research and education, but Appeal support specifically allows the Foundation to grow its endowment and underwrite some programs not covered by active major gift commitments, and also helps offset operational expenses of the Foundation. Through their hard work, the 2015 Annual Appeal surpassed goals for money raised ($219,347 – 109% of goal) and member participation (440 members – 115% of goal).

Through the Partnership Initiative, the ACP Education Foundation recognizes an elite group of leaders in the Ambassadors Club. Collectively, the focused grant funding assists in underwriting initiatives within the specialty. Important multi-year projects can be executed through the College with these ACPEF resources that ultimately increase the value of professional benefits for all prosthodontists.

Dr. David A. Felton and Dr. Thomas D. Taylor were recognized as co-recipients of the Founders Society Award. In the spirit of its founders, the Foundation presents the Founders Society Award to honor individuals who have made a significant impact on the growth and development of the Foundation and who have demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment to the Foundation.
