WHY PROFESSIONAL STAFF PAY AT AUCKLAND IS NOT FAIR: Professional staff at the University of Auckland have salary scales with the lowest starting rate and top rate of any university in NZ, apart from Lincoln.

For example - here are the lowest points on the professional (general) staff salary scales at NZ universities:

And the highest points on the salary scales:

But the real problem is not the lowest or highest rates but the system for progressing through the scale. At all other universities professional staff can progress through their pay scale with annual pay rises. Professional staff at the University of Auckland could be stuck at the same spot on their pay scale for years.

For instance, across the road at AUT, the collective agreement reads:

“An employee holding a position on a grade to which two or more salary steps apply, and who is not being paid at the highest of those steps shall, after 12 months at that rate, move to the salary step above.”
