JIM HERLIHY

Director of Athletics First Year

Plymouth State University, 1988 A leader with more than 25 years of experience in athletic administration, including nearly 12 years working at the NCAA Division II level, Jim Herlihy was been named the new Director of Athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery in September of 2015. Herlihy spent the past 16 months as the Director of Athletics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., a NCAA Division II member which competes in both the Northeast-10 Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference. During his tenure with the Hawks, Herlihy oversaw 20 sports, nine facilities, 68 employees and more than 450 student-athletes. He managed the financial aspects of a $7 million operating

budget and Annual Fund, while cultivating gifts in athletic initiatives during the leadership phase of the first-ever Capital Campaign conducted in the 125-year history of Saint Anselm. Herlihy also served on the President’s Cabinet, where he was the liaison for numerous campus committees. Under his leadership, five teams qualified for national tournaments and more than 55 percent of student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List. Additionally, the department of athletics boasted a 92 percent graduation rate and student-athletes participated in more than 4,000 hours of community service. Prior to his arrival on the Hilltop, Herlihy served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Montevallo for seven years. While at Montevallo, Herlihy guided the Falcons through a transition from the Gulf South Conference to their current home, the Peach Belt Conference, while also overseeing the 15 athletic programs, 42 employees, more than 300 student-athletes and seven facilities. He spearheaded the fund raising and construction of three new facilities on campus and improved the Annual Fund by more than 200 percent. Herlihy was also responsible for the addition of five varsity sports at Montevallo. Competitively, the Falcons captured six conference championships and finished as conference runners-up eight times. The school qualified for the NCAA Tournament 15 times under his leadership. Montevallo posted its best finishes in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings under his guidance. Six student-athletes earned All-American status, while three were named Academic All-Americans. Montevallo also produced its first-ever conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Herlihy was an instrumental leader in a period of substantial growth at Montevallo. Under his direction, the Falcons increased their student-athlete population by more than 100 percent, while maintaining a strong tradition on the fields of competition and in the classroom. More than 60 percent of all student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, while athletics recorded a graduation rate more than 20 percent higher than the general student body. The department of athletics was a national finalist for the 2014 NCAA DII Award of Excellence and was recognized by the Peach Belt Conference for community engagement initiatives three times. Herlihy has served on the NCAA DII Management Council, as well as been a member of the NCAA DII Finance & Planning Committee and DII Identity & Branding Committee. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and has served on the Board of Directors for the DII Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of both the College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) and the Collegiate Event & Facility Management Association (CEFMA). The SSAC and NAIA

Founded in 1949, what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2015-16 academic year marks the 16th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 74 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 40 years, AUM has claimed 25 national championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

2015-16 Season Outlook

The 2015-16 Auburn Montgomery women’s basketball team has the pieces in place to make a run at the 19th NAIA Tournament appearance in school history. The Warhawks finished last season with a 21-10, but fell just shy of the national tournament. “As a coach, you would always like to see a little more,” eighth-year head coach Dan Davis said. “But overall, I am pleased with a pair of 21-win seasons in the last three years. I think we are moving in the right direction and a lot of that had to do with last year’s team. We graduated some quality seniors, but I think this team is built around the style I would prefer to play.” This year’s team returns seven letterwinners from that team, including senior guard Jatoria Carter, a 2014-15 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. The Warhawks also welcome back senior Reggotta Craig, a 5-11 forward who can play both inside and shoot from the outside. Junior Kaylan Withrow will provide a constant outside presence after hitting 141 3-pointers in the previous two seasons. Senior post Marren Schwartz will look to provide a true post presence after missing last season due to injury, while sophomore Lyndsey Macon will be expected to increase her production, despite starting 31 games as a true freshman. Fellow sophomores Aleksandra Trisic, Tatyana Darden and Jaycie Bobo will also look to increase their roles with the team. Additionally, the program welcomed five newcomers to the program. Senior Jada Williams transferred to AUM from the University of West Alabama, while also adding University of South Alabama transfer Grace Farnsworth. The Warhawks also signed junior college standouts Keyonda Mason and Kyla Rooks, while adding freshman post Anastasia Evans from British Columbia. The roster has Davis excited and he feels the breakdown could be a recipe for success. “This is a very smart team and I think our team skill is as good as it’s been in a few years,” Davis added. “They have a good awareness and are picking things up quickly. This is as good as I have seen the chemistry on, and off, the court in a while. We have a team full of shooters and have a lot of versatility, as well as a strong core of leaders. I am really excited about getting started.”

The Backcourt The backcourt will be the strength for the Warhawks this season, with Carter headlining the talented group. After having her first season cut short 15 minutes in, Carter rebounded and earned Southern States Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year honors, Honorable Mention All-American accolades and

was named a first-team all-conference selection. Carter averaged 13.1 points, 4.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game. Her 106 steals ranked second in the NAIA, while her 127 assists was 24th. ”The biggest improvement I have seen in Tori this year is her leadership,” Davis said. “She has set the tone for our program from the first practice and does the same every day. She knows the team looks up to her and she brings it every day. If Tori can match her production from last year, we will have a very good year.” With Carter the inked-in starter at the point guard spot, Withrow will continue to be the starter at the shooting guard spot. The junior from Cleveland, Tenn., drained 87 3-pointers last season, a mark which ranked 10th nationally and tied for the fifth-best season total in school history. Withrow converted 38.2 percent of her attempts from distance and 82.9 percent from the charity stripe. “I expect Kaylan to step up her leadership with the team as a junior,” Davis said. “She is a critical part of our success and knows what we expect on and off the court. I think she is the best shooter I have seen in my nine years in the SSAC. But she has learned that if her shot is not falling, she can contribute to the team in other ways. She is a solid defender and can get her teammates involved.” Also back is Macon, who appeared in all 31 games during her first season, averaging 1.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and better than two assists per game. With a solid inaugural campaign under her belt, Davis feels Macon can take her game to a new level as a sophomore. “I think Lyndsey will build on a very good freshman year,” Davis said. “She has played a year in our program and knows what we expect of her. She has really improved her shooting ability, both behind the arc and with her pull-up jump shot. She is one of our best passers and does not turn the ball over. I expect her to take her game to the next level.” Fellow sophomores Trisic, Darden and Bobo return for their second season with the program. The trio combined to appear in 24 games last year and will likely see an increased role in 2015-16. “I think Aleksandra has shown the most improvement of all our returning players,” said Davis. “She has improved her skill and her quickness, which has also improved her confidence. She has become more comfortable at AUM and with our program, so I think she will have a nice role with our team this year.” “Tatyana worked really hard during the offseason and has shown she wants to compete for minutes,” Davis said. “She looks more comfortable on the court and seems to be playing with a lot of confidence. I think she will be able to contribute us this season.”Marren Schwartz

2015-16 Season Outlook

“Jaycie is a great teammate and will do anything to make a member of her team better,” Davis said. “She does everything we ask of her and has shown tremendous improvement from the end of last season. She has a great basketball IQ and is leader in our program.” The two newcomers to the program, Williams and Rooks, will also compete for not only playing time, but potentially a starting spot. Williams played the past two seasons at West Alabama, where she averaged 5.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game as a junior for the NCAA Division II Tigers. “Jade will play a key role for our team on both ends of the floor,” Davis said. “She can shoot the three, but can drive to the basket and make plays. I think she is a great defender and can rebound the ball well. She has a great work ethic and a great attitude. I am happy to have her in our program.” Rooks joins the Warhawks after helping Lawson State Community College to a 24-10 record, the Alabama Community College Conference Tournament championship and a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s DI Women’s Basketball Championship last season. The Birmingham, native averaged 5.0 points, 5.0 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game during her sophomore season with the Cougars. “Kyla is a true point guard,” Davis said. “She will run the team and takes care of the basketball. She is quick, but is also very strong. She doesn’t look to score, but she is a skilled shooter. I see her competing for serious minutes this season.”

The Frontcourt This year’s roster features five players who will see minutes in the post, but only one tradition center in the returning senior Schwartz. However, the ability for the AUM post presence to also shoot from outside the paint has Davis excited. “This year’s team will have a different look,” Davis continued. “Our post players are no longer built to bang inside, but more equipped to run the floor. They have good length and are skilled shooters. I think they could really stretch a lot of defenses this year.” Schwartz will likely be the starter in the post for the Warhawks, despite missing last season with an injury. As a junior, the Dacula, Ga., averaged 7.1 points and a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game, while adding six double-doubles. “Marren will provide us with the traditional post presence AUM teams have had in the past,” Davis said. “She is the heartbeat of our team. She is respected by her teammates and leads every day, whether

it be in practice or on game day. Her style of play fits this team very well.” Craig will also play a key role for AUM in the post, although she has the ability to play with her back to the basket or outside. Last season, the Hoover, Ala., native averaged 9.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. “Gotti is very quick and extremely athletic,” Davis said of Craig. “She is coming off a strong junior season and has really improved on our outside shooting during the summer. She is a warrior and is an incredible teammate. She is always upbeat and works to improve every day. She is a special player.” The paint will feature three talented newcomers in Farnsworth, Mason and Evans, all three of which will see significant minutes. Farnsworth joined the Warhawks following a two-year stint at the University of South Alabama. The Milton, Ga., native appeared in 27 games for the Lady Jags last season, averaging 2.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. “Grace is 5-11 and can stroke the three,” Davis said. “She has tremendous post moves and is poised. She will compete for a starting position and is very versatile. She is a very good defensive player and enjoys playing on that end of the court. I really think she will create some tough matchups for teams and will really fit into our system well.” Mason played the previous two seasons at Shelton State Community College, where she averaged 7.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals per game as a sophomore. During her tenure, she helped the Bucs to a 59-7 overall record. “Keyonda will bring a lot of energy to the floor,” Davis said. “She has a competitive streak to her that I love. She runs the floor like a guard and that translates to quickness in the paint. She has great length and will be a very good defender for us.” Evans will also compete for playing time and joined the program from Dr. Charles Best Secondary School in Coquitlam, British Columbia. During her final season with the Blue Devils, Evans averaged 14.0 points per game. “Ana has a very high ceiling,” Davis said. “She has a tremendous work ethic, but is also very humble. She is a competitor and has a good skill set. She runs the floor incredibly well and can shoot the three. I think be able to give us some nice minutes this season and will continue to improve as the season goes on.”

AUM Women’s Basketball AUM Athletics

Beginning his eighth season as the head coach of the women’s basketball program at Auburn Montgomery, Dan Davis has continued the team’s proud history of success on and off the court. In his seven seasons as head coach, Davis has led the Warhawks to the NAIA Tournament and earned Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. During his time at the helm, Davis has also coached three All-American players, 10 SSAC All-Conference performers, seven SSAC All-Division selections and three SSAC All-Freshman team members, while leading the team to an overall mark of 119-90.

Last season, Davis helped AUM to a 21-10 record, marking his third 20-plus win season at the helm. The Warhawks qualified for the SSAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season, earning the No. 3 seed after posting a 12-6 conference record. Junior Jatoria Carter enjoyed a decorated campaign, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors from the NAIA, as well as Newcomer of the Year and first-team all-conference accolades from the SSAC. Withrow was a second-team all-conference selection, while three student-athletes were selected to the SSAC All-Academic team. As a team, the Warhawks ranked in the top-10 of the NAIA in scoring defense and steals. Davis and the Warhawks finished 14-15 during the 2013-14 season, overcoming a first half of the season in which AUM had just seven players. The Warhawks had two all-conference selections in Katie Williams and Tina Odume, while under his guidance Marren Schwartz also earned all-division honors. Kaylan Withrow was named a member of the league’s all-freshman team. Williams and Jazmine Jackson earned SSAC All-Academic team honors, while Williams was selected a NAIA Scholar Athlete. In 2012-13, Davis guided the Warhawks to a 21-9 record, marking the most wins in the program since the 2006-07 season. The season was highlighted by a 54-49 victory over NAIA national runner-up Lee University, a program which AUM has beaten only four times in program history. Under his leadership, LaKenya Drayton became the 24th AUM player to earn All-America status, earning honorable mention honors, along with all-conference accolades from the SSAC. Additionally, Williams and Psachal Maize were selected to the SSAC All-West Division team. The two seasons prior, the team finished with identical 14-16 records. The 2011-12 season gave plenty of reasons for optimism, however, with newcomers Drayton and Keisha Moore both earning spots on the SSAC All-West Division team and Marren Schwartz making the All-Freshman team. The team also continued its success in the classroom, finishing with a grade-point average over 3.0 for the fourth consecutive year. Four players earned spots on the SSAC All-Academic team. The 2010-11 season was capped by the Warhawks winning four of their final six games, while also welcoming Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth into the program’s 1,000-Point Club. During the 2009-10 campaign, Davis guided AUM to a 15-15 record and a tie for fourth place in the SSAC standings. Highlighting the season was a 73-49 defeat of perennial conference powerhouse, Lee University. In addition, Cassie Moore earned honorable mention All-America honors, while also being named the SSAC’s Defensive Player of the Year. In his first season, Davis served as interim head women’s basketball coach and led the Warhawks to a NAIA National Tournament appearance and a 20-9 overall record. Under his leadership, AUM led the SSAC in scoring defense and 3-point field goal percentage, while ranking second in field goal percentage, defensive field goal percentage and defensive 3-point field goal percentage. Moore earned Third-Team All-American honors, while the Warhawks finished the season ranked 25th in the nation. Along with success on the court, the Warhawks have also excelled in the classroom under Davis, as student-athletes have been named NAIA Academic All-Americans 10 times. They have earned SSAC Academic All-Conference honors 27 times. The women’s basketball program has also had the AUM Female Honor Student-Athlete during three of his seven seasons and has posted a team GPA of 3.0 or better during eight of 14 semesters under Davis. Davis also spent one season as the Warhawks’ assistant coach under former Athletic Director Steve Crotz. As the assistant coach, Davis served as the recruiting coordinator and provided assistance in all areas of individual and team development. Prior to joining AUM, Davis spent five years at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Ga., as the head coach of the girls’ basketball team from 2002-07. During his time with PCA, Davis coached seven all-county and all-region performers, two all-state players and one region player of the year. He helped the Stars to a 65-63 overall record during his tenure, while also serving as the school’s athletic director from 2005-07. Davis has also made coaching stops at South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, Ga., where he was head coach of the boys’ junior varsity basketball team and

Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., where he was head coach of the boys’ basketball varsity squad. Along with his coaching duties, Davis serves as AUM’s Champions of Character coordinator. He is also very involved in the community, as well as professional organizations, including the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, YMCA, American Red Cross and Christ Community Church. He has directed numerous youth camps and has been on staff at camps hosted by the University of Tennessee, University of Georgia and Florida State University. In 2012, Davis became the SSAC Conference Chair for women’s basketball. Before joining the coaching ranks, Davis was a four-year member of the AUM men’s basketball team, playing for legendary Warhawks’ Head Coach Larry Chapman. During his AUM career, the team played in the NAIA National Tournament, won the NAIA Southeast Region and were the Southern States Conference Champions. Davis graduated from AUM in 1999 with a degree in secondary education and social sciences. Davis is married to the former Christi Shirley. The couple has four children, Abigail, Cooper and twins, Nash and Tate.

AUM Coaching Staff

Following a two-year playing career, Shanice Burnette will join the women’s basketball coaching staff as a student assistant during the 2015-16 season. Burnette, who transferred to AUM following two seasons at NCAA Division I Lipscomb University, appeared in 59 games during her career with the Warhawks. She averaged 9.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game in those

games, while hitting 118 3-pointers during her tenure. Burnette was successful in the classroom, earning All-Academic honors from the Southern States Athletic Conference as a senior. Additionally, she was selected the Warhawks’ Musco Lighting Champion of Character representative following her final season. In her two seasons, she scored 537 points, grabbed 379 rebounds, dished out 122 assists, snagged 65 steals and blocked 15 shots. During her junior campaign, she ranked 35th in the NAIA in defensive rebounds (5.655) and 48th in made 3-pointers (59) and 3-pointers made per game (2.034). In her final season, she ranked 48th in 3-point percentage (.358). A starter in 58-of-59 career games, she scored in double figures 22 times, including a career-high 27 against Selma University in 2013. Burnette is the daughter of Stanley and Johnnie Burnette. She is currently working toward her degree in elementary education.

AUM Women’s Basketball AUM Athletics

Just as important as success on the court and in the classroom, giving back to the community has always been a key philosophy of the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s basketball team. The success on the court is evident. Beginning its 27th year of existence, AUM has made 18 NAIA National Tournament appearances, won better than 69 percent of its games and had 25 All-American selections. In the classroom, the Warhawks consistently finish semesters with a team cumulative grade-point average of better than 3.0. During the 2015 spring semester, the women’s basketball team had 11 players earn a 3.0 GPA. AUM had three student-athletes named to the 2014-15 Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and one NAIA Scholar Athlete. The women’s basketball team has also earned two AUM Honor Student-Athlete awards, sponsored by the SSAC. But the component of the Warhawks’ philosophy that is often overlooked is the way the team gives back. During the past year, the women’s basketball program has participated in a variety of events in the community, benefitting citizens of all ages. One of the most popular events the Warhawks participate in is the annual Make a Difference Day. During the event, players and coaches interact with local youth, reading books and doing various activities with children at the Molina Learning Center in Montgomery. Along with reading to the children, members of the team also help the center’s students pick out books for their own personal library. The team works with AUM professor Dr. Nancy Anderson on the project. The team also held a one-day clinic for members of the Prattville YMCA, at which they taught basketball fundamentals and life skills to more than 40 local youth. During the holiday season, the Warhawks were active in the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department’s Christmas for Kids campaign. They also participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service initiative and spent time reading to students at Blount Elementary School and the First United Methodist Church’s Early Childhood Development Center. Additionally, players and coaches have volunteered to run activity booths at the Blount Fall Festival and have conducted small clinics for members of the Early Childhood Development Center. Members of the team have helped AUM students move into the residence halls and spearheaded AUM’s first blood drive of the year as part of its partnership with the NAIA Leadership Program. The women’s team also sponsored the 14th annual Warhawk Challenge in early October, where nearly 70 runners participated in the four-mile trail run. The Warhawks will also partner with the Joy to Life Foundation again this year for their annual “Pink Zone” game, to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. In past years, AUM has honored survivors of the dreaded disease following its game.
