MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATEIllustrious Sir, Chris Hagenian

What a busy month March has been and April is about to get busier with WSA around the corner! We had some fantastic OVs

this month starting with the Casa Grande Shrine Club and their great hospitality. The combined Greeters, Temple Guard, and Provost OV was next, and was an outstanding success and a fun night. Lady Mary and I thank you for all the gifts to the temple, your hard work, and the personal gifts. Next, I traveled

to El Bekal Temple in Anaheim, CA for their Potentate’s Ball it was a great time and we were able to spread the word about WSA to the majority of the California temples in attendance. After that I traveled to Mexico City for the Hospital Board Meeting and

to distribute the blankets donated by the Ladies of the Yuma Shrine Clubs to the children. They were extremely happy to receive the gifts and send their thanks and appreciation for your generosity. I am more

than happy to deliver any donations to the Mexico City Hospital that any Unit, Club, or individual would like to make, please get in contact with me and we can make arrangements.I thank all the Units and Clubs who made donations towards the purchase of

the concession machines for the temple. We have almost everything we need at this point, but there is room for one or two more items. We just signed and finalized the deal with Centaury Link to install Fiber Optic Internet in the building, final phases of the construction should start in a month or two. Finally, there are two ceremonials coming up and we need candidates! Please

seek out qualified Brothers to join in the Fun, Fraternalism, and Philanthropy we have at El Zaribah Shrine! A hearty THANK YOU to the Clubs and Units that are meeting the general fund $1,000 challenge!Fraternally, Chris

Phoenix Outreach Clinic

Back in the late 1990’s (seems like only yesterday) Sarah Cramer entered into our hospital system as an infant and immediately stole the hearts of all the El Zaribah Shriners and Ladies. As she grew, she and her family helped us whenever and wherever they were needed and became very dear to all of us. All who have been around El Zaribah for a while remember Sarah and how much she has done to promote our cause.

I just recently heard from Sarah’s family and thought I’d give everyone an update on Sarah’s accomplishments. Sarah is currently in her second year at Arizona State University (Go Devils!) and actually in her third year academically. She is studying Social Justice and hopes to have her bachelors and masters degrees done in 4 years. She is working on campus as a writing tutor and is the editor of the campus women’s magazine. She is still one of our “Shriner Kids” and is actively participating in the research program for Brittle Bone disease. What a remarkable young lady! Sarah, we are all very proud of you.

Arabian Tales Volume 33 – Issue #4

El Zaribah has just celebrated its 119th anniversary, so it is timely and informative to reestablish important milestones of El Zaribah so that Nobles may be better informed of the early history of their Shrine Temple.

FRIDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 23, 1917 (THE ARIZONA RPUBLICAN)SHRINERS WILL BUILD TEMPLEThe Shrine Temple, of which the Nobles. of the state have dreamed for the past few years,

is at last an established reality. Action taken last evening by the El Zaribah shrine, will make it possible to start the building within the next few months. It was especially gratifying to the local Nobles, to have two outside membors of the order take the initiative towards bringing the plans to culmination. Noble Neil Bailey of Jerome, and Illustrious Potentate H. A. Morgan of Willcox, broke the ice last night and started the movement which will result in Phoenix having one of the finest buildings of its kind in the country. A lot on North Central avenue just north of the School of Music, has been owned by the Shrine for some time. Plans for a magnificent Temple costing $100,000 have been drawn and approved for over a year. A committee was appointed to take charge of the erection of the building, and it is expected that bids will be asked within a short time.

Fast forward, to 1988, and El Zaribah was preparing for a new temple, again.

In September of 1988, a special meeting was called regarding a new site and arrangements for our “New” El Zaribah Shrine Auditorium were submitted to the Nobility. On October 8, 1988 a ground-breaking ceremonial was held with Imperial Sir Edward G. McMullan and many other Shrine and civic dignitaries present. In late 1989, the Shriners completed the new auditorium building, which now bears the name “El Zaribah Shrine Auditorium.”

After the Shriners relocated, the state government of Arizona acquired their original building to house the museum and offices of the Arizona Department of Mines and MineralResources, which moved in, in October 1991. The

building was renamed the Polly Rosenbaum Building in honor of Polly Rosenbaum, a longtime member of the Arizona House of Representatives who, in collaboration with then-governor, Rose Mofford, spearheaded efforts to obtain and renovate the building as a permanent home for the Department’s mineral collection and archives.

The original El Zaribah Shrine Auditorium, which opened in 1921, hosted gatherings for members of the Arizona chapter of Shriners International. At this time, former Phoenix Mayor John Driggs wants to reopen the facility as a place for discussing civic issues.

Driggs is working with Ryden Architects and MRT Design to update six buildings in the Phoenix

Proponents want to focus on the old Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum first because it’s currently not being used, said Don Ryden, historical architect for the project.

The plan is to have the building serve as a space for civic engagement with state agencies, local associations, school boards, nonprofits, councils, tribes and other groups that could rent out the facility or certain rooms in it, Ryden said.

Arabian TalesVolume 33 – Issue #4Shriner’s Village

As Shriners, we are part of an international organization that strengthensus on both a personal and, in many cases, a familial level. Steven T. Clark, past East-West Shrine Game player and Shriners International

legacy member, is proud to be part of a history of brotherhood and camaraderie that stretches beyond himself.

For Clark, football was always “more than just a game” – it was a way to give back and to contribute to organizations such as Shriners Hospitals for Children. “The East-West Shrine Game is unlike any other bowl game out there,” said Clark. “It gives the players a truly meaningful experience and opportunity to play the game they love.”

Clark was one of nearly 100 college football all-stars that took the field on Jan.18, 2014, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., to play the 89th East-West Shrine Game. To Clark, this particular game was especially meaningful. Nearly 40 years ago, Clark’s grandfather, Thomas Perry, joined the Shriners fraternity. In 2010, Clark also became a Shriner, and now shares the fraternal experience with both his grandfather and a cousin.

Clark became part of his family’s Shriners legacy when he joined Ararat Shriners in Kansas City, Mo. He decided to join the fraternity to commemorate his grandfather’s more than 40 years of contributions to the organization, and the special bond they share. Clark’s grandfather became a member of Ararat Shriners in 1978, and was very active in his local community. “I have always admired the kind of man my grandfather is and all that he represents,” said Clark. “And being a Shriner is a big part of that.”

On Jan. 17, 2014, the day before he played in the East-West Shrine Game, then Imperial Potentate, John Cinotto, presented Clark with a legacy plaque and pin at the Players’ and Hall of Fame banquet to honor his family’s fraternal legacy. For many men, being a Shriner is a family tradition that stretches across generations. The Legacy Program is a way to honor this special bond.

Culinary UnitGreetings from behind the line! The

CIF BBQ has come and gone. The meat was great and attendance good. We will know more about the

bottom line in the near future. We really want to thank all of the other units that aided in this event. It takes a very big group effort to pull something of this magnitude off to a successful conclusion. Again, thanks to all who helped and we hope you all enjoyed a great meal! We also thank God for holding off on the rain until it was all over and done.We serve at every Unit Head, Stated

Meeting and whenever the Potentate desires quality service. We are sorry if you have not seen us, but we have been here, even if you haven’t. Members really do need to support our Temple activities. Don’t just be “Dues Payers. You don’t gain a thing by sitting on in front of the TV. Survivor will air again ON Demand or just TiVo it.The Culinary Unit meets on the third

Tuesday of the month. Join us for a bite in the Red Fez Room and follow-up with our unit meeting in the Culinary Room at 7:00. We have taken a big hit in membership this year, so now is the time to join us. The signup bonus is unbelievable.Be sure to say “Hi!” as Lenny pours gravy on

your thumb. Remember I am the one with the clean apron, Jimmy is the confused one and we occasionally see Bob as he passes by the serving while out wandering around. Don is actually doing something, though not necessarily the right thing.Ken Conner, Culinary Scribe?

GreetersWe had a great turnout

for our Joint OV thanks to the efforts of the Provost

and Temple Guard Units. The green theme was quite appropriate for St Patrick’s Day and the traditional boiled dinner was well received.April seems to be parade free so we’re

looking forward to the Easter Brunch, the Western Shrine Association in Las Vegas and our visitation to Hunters Paradise Lodge. Ted Brownell is busy working on our second fishing trip to Forest Lakes over Fathers Day weekend.Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a

few good men. We meet the third Monday of each month at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. Join us at 5:30 PM for libations and dinner.Ellis (Nick) Nichols

Motorcycle UnitThe Unit has been busy with

practice and parades, but went to work on the Swap Meet and Bowling Palooza.Brother Tom Sheldon is on the

road to recovery from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident while on his way home from the Temple. Bob Hicklin’s lovely wife Dee lost in her battle with cancer. Our hearts go out to Brother Bob and his family. We are also saddened by the passing of our long-time member Bill Jones. Rest in peace Brother Bill.A couple of us went to an advanced

training class with the Arizona Drill Team. Brother Mick Degn hosted a great motorcycle safety event for AMSAF. On hand to help out were; Jimmy Lee Harrison, Terry Cooper, Illustrious Sir Gerry Massey, and the Honorable Jerry Weiers, Mayor of Glendale. The event was a great success! Congratulations! I hope to have some exciting news next

Drum and BugleThe Drum & Bugle Corps had a great

time performing at the CIF BBQ. The crowd seemed to really enjoy our music plus it was great to see some faces at the BBQ that we haven’t

seen around the Shrine for a while. We appreciate everyone who came to support this important fundraiser. The Drum & Bugle Corps practices every

Tuesday night in the Band Room at 5:30 pm. We’re a very informal group and enjoy

it when anyone drops by between 5:30 and 6:30 to look us over or just to listen for a while, join us with some libations, or sample some of that Hospitality Room culinary delights Fred & Lil Rogers bring to most every meeting. Stop by sometime and say hi.Alto Bugle

Mobile Nobles Shrine ClubThe Mobile Nobles and Legion of

Honor had a great OV in February. We are still getting very positive reports on this event. The February meeting of the Mobile Nobles was

one of the best attended meetings that we have had in a long time. The club officers are doing a very good job of getting the word out about our meetings and it is showing positive results. We were honored to have the Ill Sir Dave Polner PP (Hospital Rep) attend our meeting and bring us up to date on The Shriners Hospitals for Childre® n in Salt Lake City. The talk was very interesting and informative as we get a better understanding of how the Temple works with the Hospitals. We were also pleased to have Noble Ken

Neusch, Oriental Guide, attend the meeting and was well received as he brought us up to date on the activities going on at the Temple. The aluminum can project is still going

strong and the Nobles that work the project are doing a great job and to all of them we say Thank you.The largest number of our membership is

made up of Nobles from Canada and the Northern states so as you read this article
