“Where do you start?”

That’s the title of a beautiful song by Alan and Marilyn Bergman (who performed at NJPAC last December), and it’s also the dilemma facing you, good friend, as you dive into this catalog of dozens of performances lined up for our new season.

This note is my invitation to you to have some fun getting acquainted with NJPAC’s 2014-15 season over the next 40 or so pages. By the time you’ve absorbed everything we’ve designed for you, I’d be surprised if you hadn’t planned multiple visits to our splendid Newark campus.

One of the perks of CEO-ship is the chance to call out a few favorite shows. These include:

New Jersey’s acclaimed Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company is a dynamic troupe that finds inspiration in everything from the graceful lines of calligraphy to the thunderous motion of martial arts. This high-energy celebration of the Chinese New Year will spin both traditional and contemporary music and dance into a colorful mélange sure to delight audiences of all ages. According to the Chinese calendar, family and friends should expect 12 months of peace and love during the Year of the Sheep!

State Ballet Theatre of Russia—one of Russia’s best- kept dance secrets—returns to NJPAC with the sweeping and romantic classical ballet Swan Lake. From the city of Veronezh, State Ballet Theatre of Russia has brought such productions as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Romeo and Juliet to NJPAC in the past. This time, the company of 55 presents an all-time favorite, the tale of a swan queen cursed by an evil wizard, set to a glorious Tchaikovsky score.

The innovative and provocative Lula Washington Dance Theatre of Los Angeles thrills audiences with its powerful, high-energy dancing. A jazz-flavored program is specially planned for NJPAC. Lula Washington focuses on using dance to explore social and humanitarian issues, including aspects of African-American history and culture. The company, created in 1980 by Washington and her husband, Erwin, has become one of the most admired African-American contemporary dance ensembles in the West.

Featuring prestigious playwrights from New Jersey and plays developed in the Garden State—and panels of artists, scholars, community leaders and newsmakers— each evening will use a work-in-progress to spur discussion on important issues in the state and nation, leading the way to deeper understandings of concerns we all face.

Discover the wonder of words when the 15th biennial Dodge Poetry Festival—North America’s largest poetry festival—returns to NJPAC and Newark’s Downtown Arts District for the third time. Dubbed “Wordstock” by The New York Times, this vibrant gathering of writers, storytellers, slam champions and musicians from around the globe transforms New Jersey’s largest city into a “poetry village” for four days. The dozens of acclaimed poets in this year’s lineup include U.S. Poets Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winners Billy Collins, Rita Dove and Robert Pinsky and Pulitzer awardees Yusef Komunyakaa, Sharon Olds and Gary Snyder. Richard Blanco, chosen by President Barack Obama to read a poem at his second inauguration, is also among the distinguished readers. Just a few of the highlights of this enriching, imaginative exploration of literature and spoken word are “Another Kind of Courage”—a reading by veterans and their families—a tribute to the late Newark author Amiri Baraka, and “PoemJazz,” an innovative crossroads of music and dialogue with Robert Pinsky.

Danny Bhoy began his career in 1998 after seeing his first comedy show at the Edin-burgh Festival; a year later he won The Daily Telegraph’s Open Mic Award, Britain’s big-gest competition for comedy newcomers.

For more than 40 years, Robert Klein’s award-winning, versatile career in comedy —and on Broadway, TV and film—has made him an audience favorite. A former member of Chicago’s famed Second City, he was nominated twice for best comedy album Grammys for Child of the Fifties and Mind Over Matter. In 1975, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on HBO and has gone on to perform nine solo shows for that network.

Witness the talent, energy and passion of 400 of New Jersey’s talented young performers as students from all 13 of the ensembles that comprise the New Jersey Youth Symphony take to the Prudential Hall stage. Led by Artistic Director Jeffrey D. Grogan, this concert is a celebration of 35 years of providing outstanding orchestral experiences to students from 12 counties in New Jersey. See and hear for yourself the magic that is the New Jersey Youth Symphony! For ages 8 and up.

Internationally acclaimed bass Kevin Maynor performs the title role of Paul Robeson in a stirring new opera about the activist, singer, lawyer, athlete and actor. Composer Adolphus Hailstork and librettist Shaunelle Perry are the creators of this important tribute to Robeson’s life and repertoire, presented by Newark’s own Trilogy: An Opera Company. For ages 14 and up.

Swing into the holidays at this interactive concert filled with yuletide songs with a jazz twist. Through call and response, singing, clapping and playing with the band, families with children of all ages can share the joy of the season.

In observance of Kwanzaa, this revered African-American a cappella women’s ensemble performs blues, jazz, gospel and R&B, with excursions into symphonic and dance theater. Sweet Honey In The Rock has enjoyed a 40-year career of musical and activist achievements and worldwide tours, from the U.K. to the U.N. For ages 10 and up.

Jeff Brown’s beloved children’s book, Flat Stanley, is adapted by Dallas Children’s Theater into a musical comedy about the value of being different. For Stanley Lambchop, life is too normal, so he makes a wish on a shooting star that he will do something amazing. When he is flattened by a fallen bulletin board, he begins a new life and an unexpected quest to see the world. For ages 5 and up.

The original animated television classic comes to life! Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical soars off the screen and onto the Prudential Hall stage this holiday season. The magical world of the North Pole is conjured in this spectacle-filled musical, which faithfully re-creates the colorful characters and exciting plot of the 1964 TV special. From fleeing the Abominable Snow Monster to saving Christmas, join Rudolph and his friends Clarice, Hermey the Elf and Yukon Cornelius as their adventures teach us that what makes you different can be what makes you special. Spoken word champion Bryonn Bain performs his one-man tour de force, the multimedia Lyrics From Lockdown, executive produced by Gina and Harry Belafonte. This unbelievably true story begins when Bain, a hip-hop theater innovator from Brooklyn, is wrongly imprisoned in New York City jails—while studying law at Harvard. Mature themes will be presented, recommended for ages 14 & up.

Lilly the mouse loves everything about school, especially her cool teacher, Mr. Slinger. But when he confiscates her prized purse, her joy turns to misery. Lilly, who is used to being the brightest and loudest mouse around, also has to get used to sharing the spotlight with a new baby brother in Omaha Theater Company’s charming adaptation of Kevin Henkes’ award-winning children’s book. Marionetas de la Esquina, a puppet theater company from Mexico, takes a contemporary and whimsical look at the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty. Written by award-winning playwright Amaranta Leyva, the reimagined Sleeping Beauty Dreams depicts the famous princess as an overprotected daughter looking for a way to break free of her castle walls to search for true love and her true self. NJPAC’s outdoor Theater Square is the site of this second annual celebration, which features arts and crafts, yummy refreshments, tours, contests and demonstrations. Onstage entertainment includes dance, with JoulJerz Dance Entertainment and Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble, music, drumming, zumba and much more. You and yours will always remember the fun you shared at this imaginative festival. Admission is free!

Join NJPAC’s annual tribute to Dr. King beginning on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 with a performance by the legendary Dance Theatre of Harlem. Pastor Jerry Sanders of Fountain Baptist Church in Summit, is the guest speaker. On Saturday, families are invited to the free, second annual Embodying the Dream festival, which conveys the essence of Dr. King’s vision through interactive and entertaining arts workshops. Later that evening, NJPAC Stage Exchange hosts a free conversation and reading of Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj’s Little Rock, a play based on the true story of the Little Rock Nine and the contentious integration of their Arkansas high school in 1957.

Felix Hernandez’s Rhythm Revue returns to kick off NJPAC’s annual Sounds of the City outdoor music dance party. Now in its 28th year on the New York City airwaves, the live classic soul, disco and funk show is also heard on WBGO Jazz88.3.

These “Reggae Ambassadors” push the cutting edge of world music by mixing elements of R&B, funk, pop-rock and dancehall into reggae-fusion music with hits “Now That We Found Love” and “96 Degrees in the Shade.”

NJPAC ARTS EDUCATION

SchoolTime Performances are professional stage performances of music, dance, storytelling, theater, and puppetry by local, national and international artists. Performances are enriched by teacher resource guides as well as post-performance Q&A sessions.

In-School Residencies unite professional teaching artists and classroom teachers to bring the joy of dance, music and theater directly into the classroom with an engaging, curriculum-based arts experience. Residencies culminate in a performance that stimulates students’ imaginations and encourages creative self-expression.

Performing Arts Training Programs teach the artistic and technical skills needed for performance to students after school on weekdays or on Saturdays. Students enjoy professional instruction by experienced faculty in acting, jazz, musical theater, and vocal music. Dance classes are conducted by dance teaching artists from the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company.
