    Bob,

First, thank you very much for all your efforts in keeping theHicksville High graduates connected no matter the distance.I graduated in 1964 and then went to the University ofColorado, which makes me a buffalo, too! Thereafter, I movedfurther west to northern California where I attended andgraduated law school in San Francisco at the University ofCalifornia (HastingsCollege of Law) in 1971.

I have lived in San MateoCounty (about 20 milessouth of San Francisco)since 1968. I have beenmarried since 1969 andmy wife is a RegisteredNurse (retiring thissummer) and we have twokids (both of whom haveMasters degrees) and twogrand children withanother on the way (duedate is November) andboth of our kids andspouses live in the same city as us San Carlos.

I have been a criminal defense lawyer for 42 years and I worka few hours a week these days as I have worked part time formany years. It has been quite an interesting career witheverything from disturbing the peace cases to homicides tohandle.

I think I have been to Hicksville about 3 times in fifty yearsand the last time was about 15 years ago. I am very muchlooking forward to attending the reunion and I have just sent

John Maniec $200 for two tickets for my wife and myself.

I will attempt to email you a recent photograph of myselfwhich was taken be a newspaper photographer a couple ofmonths ago for a story regarding old people who play icehockey, which I still do. I even played at Hicksville High andI bet you might not even be aware there was a team in the60s!!!

Anyway, if you get the email. the enclosed photo of me willbe the identical picture. The name of our team is the OldWarriors very age appropriate

Again, thanks for all your efforts and I will always look forwardto the Newsletter. Henry Lichtenstein was a friend of mybrother (Jed Schaiman 61 I think) and my recollection ofHenry was that he was quite bright and quite skinny!

    Steve Schaiman 1964

Editors Note: Actually, your brother Jed was classmates withHenry in the class of 1959.

Steve,Received your note and photo. How do you still play hockey???I see those pros get knocked around and think our "older" bonescouldn't handle similar contact. Your note and photo will be inthe September issue.RegardsBuffalo Bob

    BB-

I am very much looking forwardto the reunion next month andappreciate the work you andothers have done to set thereunion in motion. As for playing hockey, I played onour high school team at RooseveltField (outdoor rink) in 1963-64.I resumed playing about 30 yearsago here in Northern California ona team and a few of us haveremained together all these yearsalthough we have younger

players as well. The age limit isfrom 18 to whatever and I am towards the whatever age68this month.I play defense and can still get around pretty well, forward, backward etc. We do not play with checking and full facemasks are worn (optional but I like my teeth so I wear one.)although checking is forbidden, there often is some contactand over the years I have had a medial collateral ligamentstrain (arthrogram but no surgery), pulled groin, pulledhamstring, broken wrist, among some rather ugly bruisesfrom getting hit with a puck which had found its way to anunprotected part of my body.I have been fortunate in that my knees, ankles, hips etc are allin good shape and I am relatively healthy, so I continue toplay and enjoy myself. Most often, a beer or two after thegame in the locker room, and talking about how good weonce were, also is standard and lots of fun.I sent the actual photo to John Maniec and I attempted tosend a JPG to you but I dont know if you got the actual photoon photo paper or by email. If I can figure out how to send itby email to you I may just do so if you did not get it. I havenot embraced technology but I think I can manage this. Thanks again for all your efforts!

I try tobe organized there with folders for each familymember, friends, cousins, miscellaneous, etc. Now Iam attaching a few pictures for you. The first one isof the summer school pins that I earned at the ForkLane Elementary School summer program. This wasmaybe from the summer in 1952 or 1953, when Iwas about 9 or 10 yearsold. See if anyoneremembers these pins.

Rob,Where in Spain did you go? I was

in Rota to play basketball in a U.S. Navy Tournament back in1964. We travelled to Cadiz one day and witnessed a bull fight. Quite interesting thatthe bull when killed is butchered and the meat goes to the poor. Then we flew back toNicosia, Cyprus where I was stationed.ThanksBob

We took a Globus tour with friends - it was very good. We were in Madrid, Toledo,Granada, Gibraltor, Ronda, Seville, and Cordoba. Lots of beautiful scenery andhistoric places.Rob

Gentlemen,Sharon and I will be leaving on Thursday for Russia, where we're taking a river cruise from St.Petersburg to Moscow on the Volga. We won't return until the evening of August 1st. If I seePutin when we visit the Kremlin, I'll make sure to give him the Italian salute from each of us!As a result, I will make the August 1 submission to HixNews by this Wednesday evening at thelatest. Thanks to some great work from Bob Casale, we've made some progress on the Uncon-firmed List this past month and have added a few new names to the Confirmed List. At thispoint, I can only indicate in the August 1 Update for the newsletter that we are still waiting onthe official IRS letter before we can open our bank account for donations.Bill, since the letter will be going directly to you from the IRS, should you receive it beforeAugust 1st, you can amend my Update accordingly. Should you be able to also announcethat our bank account is now open for business, by all means do that too. Please feel free tocollaborate with Ken Strafer or Bob Casale, if needed and amend the submission I send youthis week accordingly.Bob, I'll try and get a picture of me and Sharon with Mr. Putin at the Kremlin foryou to use in a future issue of HixNews. If that's not possible, I'll at least send youone of us from somewhere over there. While our river ship has WIFI, we've been warned that WIFI service will beintermittent at best as we travel along the Volga River and in and out of someof the lakes that extend from it. We're bringing a small iPad that we seldomuse, but I don't expect to be handling much email on the trip, so after thisWednesday, 7/16, please try and hold any email you'd like to send me.Best regards,Joe Carfora 1962

Hope you and Sharon have a great and uneventful trip. If you see Putin, give him the bird fromme. After I finished Communication Technician school in Pensacola, the navy sent me to

Bremerhaven. It was a great area for intercepting Russian submarine traffic thatwas sent daily. I was copying almost 40 words a minute when I finished mymorse code training. I would swear the Russian sailors were sending teletype(high speed automatic transmission) and not morse code. The old salts in Bremerhaven were there for years because they could copytheir code that was too fast for the majority of us. The problem is that many

of the old salts were ready to retire. It would be easy enough to record the transmission and slow it down but ifsomething needed immediate interpretation, recording would not work. I was in Bremerhaven for three

months, December of 1962 to February of 1963. Then was sent to Nicosia, Cyprus where we copied Iraq, Iran,Jordan, Syria and Egypt but not Israel because they were our allies. LOLEnjoyBob

This was forwarded to me by Susan McCotter:Now I wonder why this has not made the news....

I believe it was dedicated on 16 June 2014...

    Is this not news worthy???

Fred Fluckigers Obituary as it appeared in the

Glen Allen man was force behind A Grace Place agencyBY ELLEN ROBERTSON Richmond Times-Dispatch

Fred Fluckiger Jr. was instrumental in taking what is now called A Grace Place adult care center on

Staples Mill Road from a small agency that was serving 10 to 12 adults per day with physical and intellec-tual impairments in the early 1990s to one that now serves 200 with various disabilities. Freds name wasthe one we cut our teeth on as soon as we walked in the agency, noted Karen Webbman, CEO of A GracePlace. Fred was instrumental to the agency when it started moving from the founder level to a truenonprofit. He and a group of four (other directors) took us from doing nice programs to gelling into anonprofit. He was the founder of the business side. We would not be the agency we are today if Fred hadnot pushed us back at the beginning. He would push us to think bigger than we were and to realize thatso many folks needed our program to grow to meet service needs of people in our community. He helpedto define the heart of this agency. A Grace Place has grown to include services to people with age-related conditions, such as dementia,Parkinsons disease and multiple sclerosis. Its purpose is to allow people to live in their homes and not be

institutionalized. The big piece is to prevent isolation, Webbman said.Until he died at his Glen Allen home on July 7, Mr. Fluckiger was still a member of the agencys emeritusboard. The 94-year-old will be honored at a funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday, today, at Epiphany Lutheran Church,1400 Horsepen Road in Henrico County. Inurnment will be private. He often talked about giving back tohis community after retiring as a colonel at Fort Belvoir in 1971. He began to do so after moving to Viennain Northern Virginia, where he served as transportation director for the Prince William County schoolsystem and as director of specialized transportation for the elderly and handicapped for the NorthernVirginia Association of Retarded Citizens. He came to the Richmond area in the mid-1970s and served as CEO of SPECTRAN SpecializedTransportation for the elderly which operated under GRTC.

A former three-year president of the Kiwanis Club of James River Inc., he also served as lieutenant

governor of Division 24 of the groups Capitol District. He was a former vice president of the Adult Devel-opment Center Inc. and a former president of the Mayors Commission for the Disabled, which honoredhim as volunteer of the year in 1990. In 1994, Adult Care Services honored him with the Louis Michaux Award for service to people withdisabilities. A Brooklyn, N.Y., native, he was inducted into the Army in 1942 during World War II and married hishigh school sweetheart, Sonya Teresko, about a month later. Mr. Fluckiger, who co-wrote a history of hisbattalion, served with the 165th Engineer Combat Battalion, which landed on Utah Beach 30 days afterD-Day. His unit crossed the Rhine River, participated in the Battle of the Bulge and witnessed the remainsof the liberated Dachau concentration camp. He was interviewed three years ago for a World War II specialon the Public Broadcasting System. His unit took part in the capture of the Berchtesgaden area in Bavaria, where Hitler and other high-ranking Nazis had mountain homes. He earned the Bronze Star for lassoing a partially buried bomb that he thought was an oddity, perhaps a new bomb that he had not been taught about, and dragging it back to headquartersso they could see what the Germans were doing, his wife said. Mr. Fluckiger became acareer officer and later completed a degree at George Washington University. He was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and was a former president of VirginiaLutheran Men in Mission. Besides his wife, survivors include three daughters, KarenAustin of Richmond, Irene McGovern of Glen Allen and Amy Fluckiger of Wayne,Pa.; and two grandchildren.

A note sent to Mary Jane Waters from the class of 1960We are trying to verify military status for former Hicksville alumni. The reason is we are putting a memorial at the old schoolthat will house the names of all who served in the military during the Vietnam era. We have an unconfirmed list that has aname,Joseph Waters attached and we are needing to know his branch of service, years served and a listing of the variousduty stations where he served. Are you, perhaps, related to Joe? If so, please provide the needed information. Thanks

Bob,Hope you are well.Joe was born March 31, 1932 in New York City. Following high school his fascination for flyingprompted his enlistment in the United States Air Force. Two years later he was awarded an appoint-ment to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he graduated in 1956. Joe was thefirst boy from Hicksville to graduate from the Point.

Joe completed basic training at Webb AFB and advanced tactical fighter training at Luke AFB.Following a tour of F-100's at Cannon AFB, Joe attended the University of Michigan in 1962 andearned a Masters degree in both Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and InstrumentationEngineering. His subsequent assignments included Patrick AFB, RAF Lakenheath, England;aerospace Research Pilot School, Edwards AFB as a test pilot and joint Test Force Director for the F5E,International Fighter Aircraft. In 1963 Joe married Billie Fern Allison and on August 3, 1972 Joseph Jr. was born.Joe's love of Aeronautics is most aptly represented in the development of the F5E, in which heexerted such a strong influence, August 18, 1972 he became the first USAF pilot to fly the trim

International Fighter. On October 16, 1972 Joe's life was taken doing what he love to do---flying. Some of his accomplish-ments and recognition are Aeronautical Rating of Command Pilot, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 9 Oak LeafClusters; Meritorious service Medal for his work as Director of the New International Fighter F-5E Joint Test force. His untimely death was an incalculable loss for all of us and to the United States Air Force.
