An Indian textile magnate who made a fortune from his clothing empire is making sure the rest of the world knows about his success - by having a shirt made of pure gold.Although he left school without any academic paper, Pankaj Para-kh created a multi-million textile business in India.And to celebrate his pending 45th birthday on Friday, he has com-missioned the solid gold shirt that weighs more than four kilos. He said: “I wanted to wear some-thing special when I say my thanks for my success at a thanksgiving visit to the Siddhivinayak Temple of the Hindu elephant god in Mumbai.”And after paying just £127,000 (Sh19million) for the gold and have it turned into a shirt, he thinks he struck a reasonable deal. Local media reported that the shirt has got him noticed as he marches along the streets of his home in Yeola, 260 km from the city of

Mumbai. He says he gets admiring looks from women and envious peeps from men.“I never go out with less than two to three kilos of gold jewellery. “I have always been fascinated with gold since I was five-years-old and studying in school. And over the years that interest has become a real passion. So it was logical that I would want to make my 45th birthday a golden affair.“Even on my wedding 23 years ago, a lot of people said it was embarrassing that I was wearing more gold than my bride, but I just love the royal metal.”The shirt has seven solid gold buttons and is due to be officially modelled by the clothing magnate on Friday. But he tried it in ad-vance after collecting it from the Shanti Jewellers at Parel in Mum-bai where a team of around 20 craftsmen collectively spent 3,200 hours over the past two months to stitch it together.

The diaspora must vote like other Ken-yans to chart decisions that affect their destiny,” he said in Washington DC.

A Bill seeking to pave the way for National Youth Service trainees to join the disciplined forces has been tabled in the senate. The National Youth Service (Amendment) Bill spon-sored by senate majority chief whip, Beatrice Elachi seeks to give priority to NYS graduates during any recruitment to the national police Service, KDF and the NIS. “Subject to qualifications, the national security organs shall give priority to graduands of the National Youth Service during recruitment.”

Three suspected thugs were last night shot dead in two separate robbery attempts and stolen items found on them in the war against armed robbery in Nairobi. Two were killed in Huru-ma after they attacked and injured a woman, who lost two teeth. Police on patrol were alerted and shot the two dead. They recovered six mobile phones, cash and other valuables from them. Four others escaped. A third suspect was shot dead in Buruburu.

He is accused of being in possession of an external storage device, which had video clips and pictures of Parliament buildings, Continental House, Sheria House, Teleposta Towers, Holy Family Basilica, City Hall, Supreme Court, KICC and Kencom HouseThe suspect had also downloaded maps of the Central Bank of Kenya, Kenya Science Campus, Utalii Sport Grounds, Hells Gate National park, Muthaiga Golf Club, Nairobi city centre streets, Shampelle Conservancy in Magadi area, PCEA Gateway Church, USIU Hostels, and PCEA Church Kasarani.The video clips and pictures were found on his laptop which also had downloaded maps of the installations within Kenya. The 29-year-old is alleged to have committed the offence on or before March 25, 2014 at Olesauni building in Fedha estate. Police say they found him with a spy pen camera which had video clips and photos of the AP College in Embakasi, Apte Mosque and Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s Mausoleum. He pleaded not guilty.

Kenya Airways has said it will continue flying to and from its West Africa destinations despite fears of the deadly Ebola outbreak in the region. A statement from the national carrier sent to newsrooms today said the decision is based on assessments by World Health Organisation (WHO) and The International Air Transport Association (IATA) which have downplayed possible spread of the killer virus through air travel. “Arising from the unfortunate Ebola outbreak in parts of West Africa, we wish to provide the following detailed update while confirming that, Kenya Airways is still flying to and

from several destinations in that region,” a statement signed by Chief Executive Titus Naikuni said. “According to information availed to us from IATA and collaborated by local experts, the WHO, current risk assessment for the spread of Ebola by air travel and transport is minimal and hence not recommending any travel restrictions or the closure of borders at points of entry,” the statement said.The decision was announced even as the epidemic, which has so far claimed 932 lives in West Africa, was declared an international health emergency as global experts called for a coordinated approach. Guinea, Liberia

and Sierra Leone bear the biggest brunt of the epidemic which has also spread to Nigeria.“The possible consequences of further international spread are particularly serious in view of the virulence of the virus, the intensive community and health facility transmission patterns, and the weak health systems in the currently affected and most at-risk countries,” the World Health Organisation said early today following two days of emergency meetings.“A coordinated international response is deemed essential to stop and reverse the international spread of Ebola,” the statement said.

Office workers, residents and traders operating in Upper Hill area, Nairobi, will have to deal with more traffic jams after the Government announced that on-going road construction works will extend beyond the earlier set August 27 deadline.Infrastructure Principal Secretary John Mosonik said the relocation of water, sewerage and electricity facilities to create way for roads construction had taken longer than predicted. Motorists plying the road had earlier been told the construction would be complete by August 27. However, only 60 per cent

of the construction has been completed. Experts say it may take up to two to three months to complete the 5.4 kilometre stretch which covers Hospital, Elgon, Kilimanjaro, Bunyala, Mara and Upper Hill roads. Roads connection has not been adequate to cater for the dramatic rise in investment in Nairobi’s new hub for commercial offices. The construction of road has been delayed three times since May 2012 when the contract was awarded to Mattan Contractors. Construction was initially delayed by insufficient funds from the government.

A total of 1,873 people have been shot dead by police officers and thugs in the past five years. A report by human rights group, the Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU), says security agents were responsible for the killing of more than 80 per cent of victims.And while they explained why they gunned some of the suspects, no explanation was given for the killing of more than 60 per cent of suspects.“More than 60 per cent of the cases go without them giving reasons why a victim was shot or the circumstances under which the officer drew the fire arm,” IMLU’s Eric

Thuo, who was involved in the survey, said. Thugs were responsible for the killing of 135 people in gun-related crimes that account for 13.9 per cent of the total number of victims killed between 2009 and 2013. The report also says law enforcement of-ficers were the major cause of homicides and suicides and attributes them to shooting 67 per cent of reported cases. The report singled out youth between ages 20 to 29 years as the majority of the victims. Most of them were men.But majority of the suspected gangsters terrorising inno-cent Kenyans also fall within the age-bracket.

The report, however, says “seven people were killed accidentally.” About 86 per cent of the deaths occurred in Nairobi as the capital city accounted for 1,611 of the deaths between 2009 and 2013. In July last year, a young mother was killed as she breastfeed her daughter by a stray bullet during a clash between police and suspected drug peddlers in Mathare slums.The report identified Kilima-ni, Shauri Moyo, Kayole and Kasarani as the major areas where increased cases of gun related deaths were recorded.Most of the deaths occurred on Sundays, the report said.

IEBC should be disbanded as has been agitated by the opposition. Commonwealth has 53 member states from Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe and the Pacific. The process of removing commissioners and disband an election body is a constitutional process.

Hamas rejects ceasefire extension, fires rocketsThe Palestinian militant organisation, Hamas has rejected any extension of the three-day ceasefire in Gaza, which expired early today.It said that Israel had failed to meet its demands. Key among them, the re-opening of Gaza’s Harbour to shipping. Two rockets fired from Gaza hit southern Israel three hours before the three-day ceasefire was due to expire, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

The IDF accused “terrorists” of violating the ceasefire although Hamas denied firing them.The rockets fell on open ground and caused no casualties, the Israeli army said early on Friday.A Hamas military wing spokesman earlier called on Palestinian negotiators holding indirect talks with Israeli negotiators in Cairo to refuse any ceasefire extension unless its long-term demands were

An elephant in Pilanesburg National Park in South Africa used a small car apparently to scratch an itch while terrifying the passengers inside.The elephant rubbed against and sat on the roof and hood of the VW Polo, extensively denting the vehicle, smashing out all the windows, blowing out all four tires, and breaking the chassis, said Armand Grobler’s, a field

guide and lodge manager, in Pilanesburg National Park in South Africa. “We were unsure of what to do in the situation when the elephant made contact with the car, and when the car was being crushed, we feared for the lives of the driver and passenger, but our efforts were very limited as to what we could do,” Grobler told the Mir-ror. “The two passengers in the car, male and female,

both in late 20’s or early 30’s, were not harmed, only badly shaken up. They were both in shock but happy to be alive. “The car was not so lucky. From what we could see and hear, all the windows were smashed, the roof was badly dented and the entire top part of the car smashed. “All four tyres had been blown and the chassis broken.”

tech devices better prioritythan sleep for british adultsA study by a British firm shows that UK adults spend more time on technology devices than sleeping.Communications firm Ofcom says adults spend about eight hours and 41 minutes a day on media devices. This is against an average night’s sleep of eight hours and 21 minutes.The study sampled 2,800 respondents.TVs and radios still remain popular despite the growth of digital media. Almost four hours a day are spent watching TV whose almost 80 per cent of viewers do not use another device.This led to the conclusion that TV is still the most con-sumed media device although

love for books. More than 84 per cent of respondents said they had a book collection. This is despite the growing popularity of e-books.The youth were found to

While some revellers spend as much as Sh20,000 in a single weekend, the average Kenyan drinker spends Sh629 a month on alcohol.

When it comes to drinking anything out-side the household setting, more expensive products, such as alcohol and soda, win the battle for market share. Milk is reserved for home consumption.

Senior researcher Francis Karin and ex-perts from Egerton University say alcohol is the most consumed beverage outside the home. It is primarily consumed by household heads.

On average, Nairobi households consume 3.6 litres of alcohol per month. Poorer households take relatively higher volumes as the bulk of consumption is in the form of busaa and chang’aa. Spirits such as whis-ky is reserved for the wealthiest.

Kagwe says although the average amount of money spent on alcohol is Sh629 a month, poorer households spend Sh369, and Sh1,183 for the wealthiest.

25,000 join suit against FacebookMax Schrems, A data privacy campaigner has signed up 25,000 people to join him in a legal battle against Facebook.In what he describes as a “class action lawsuit”, Schrems alleges that the way the social network monitors its members’ activity on and off the site puts it in breach of European Union laws. He also claims that the company co-operated with Prism, a US- based clandestine surveillance system launched in 2007 by the National Security Agency (NSA).This comes almost a year after whistle-blower, Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA was spying on US citizens.Schrems asked Facebook users based outside the US and Cana-da who wished to take part in the case to sign up via a smartphone app.Facebook has previously denied knowing about Prism before it was mentioned in leaked US government documents.

Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications services provider, has announced that it will host Kenya Airways as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, (MVNO) on its Kenyan Network. An MVNO is a cell phone carrier (such as a prepaid wireless carrier) that does not have its own network set-up.An MVNO pays wholesale fees for mobile phone services like talk-time and SMSs and then sells them at retail prices under its own brand to customers.MVNOs can set their own pricing following agreed-upon rates with their contracted mobile service operator.Under the agreement, Airtel will provide network set up services to KQ.This means the Kenya Airways MVNO will provide cellular mobile services including customer registration, SIM card issuance, billing and customer care to end users without holding a spectrum license. The MOU between the two companies was signed on Thursday morning by KQ CEO and Managing Director, Dr. Titus

Naikuni and the Airtel Africa CEO, Mr Christian de Faria, at the Kenya Airways Headquarters in Embakasi, Nairobi.Dr. Naikuni said further details on the official launch and related details will be announced at a later stage once the necessary licensing requirements have been completed, a process which has already been initiated with the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK). He explained that the roll out of a

mobile service by the airline will specifically appeal to millions of Kenya Airways guests seeking a convenient, available, accessible and affordable roaming service and experience. “Through this partnership with Airtel, we are optimistic that our guests will soon be enjoying a service that allows them better calling rates while in Kenya or roaming within the wide Airtel network,” he said.In April this year, the CAK

The people who invest in these start-ups are known as venture capitalists.The trend is gaining ground in Kenya and helping companies to secure millions of shillings in funding.Francis Karanja and a team of researchers from VC4Africa (a community of entrepreneurs), who did a study on venture cap-ital in Kenya, have revealed that without funding start-ups make an average minimum profit of Sh34, 866. “Upon use of venture capital, the minimum profit increased to Sh600,000,” he says.Ushahidi, a Kenyan-based start-up’s whose developers created a platform to map international crises and disaster relief, managed to secure $1.2 million (Sh105 mil-lion) in funding last month.The money came from a number of venture capitalists, including one led by global investor, Investment Development (ID), Omvestments, Urban.us and Synergy Growth among others.Kenya is also host to a number of venture capital companies, includ-ing Fanisis Capital, Maris Capital, the Ajibu Venture Group.

Farmers have discovered a new way of keeping wild animals away from their livestock and crops. The deterrent is lion faeces. It gives off a smell so pungent that other predators keep off thinking they are running into lion territory.Farmers get the dung from the parks and place it strategically in farms and near their livestock.Rangers in Western Kenya’s, Ruma National Park and Mwea National

Reserve in Central Kenya now report that the dung is so effective in protecting crops and livestock that the parks can no longer supply it fast enough.The dried brown dung is so strong that farmers need only to apply it once in a week. The logic behind this method is that the scent given off by a much larger predator is likely to scare smaller ones away.

Mwongela, a park ranger at Ruma National Park, says in a day more than 30 farmers visit the park requesting for lion dung. “But the lion dung is very limited,” he says, noting that only about five to 10 farmers can get it per day.In Mwea, an area where farmers are always desperate to protect their rice paddies from birds the area’s National Reserve officers say that al-most all the farmers are now asking

for lions’ dung as a solution. Mwea farmers, who provide 80 per cent of Kenya’s rice production, have been spending at least Sh600 a day to hire people who stay in the fields for the whole day, chasing the birds. The idea is not restricted to Kenya alone as farmers from as far as Asia to South America. are fight-ing predators including coyotes, wild dogs and even birds, using lion and tiger dung.

Olympian Oscar Pistorius returned to the dock on Thursday for the finale of his murder trial as lawyers presented closing arguments in a case that has captured the world’s attention. During the trial Pistorius underwent psychiatric evaluation and an ensuing report

said he was suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. However, doctors said he was not suffering any mental illness that could prevent him from being held criminally responsible for his actions.
