Dr. Branch has been teaching graduate and undergraduate sport management at West Virginia University since 1993. He served as coordinator for sport management for five of those years. In that capacity, he was responsible for internship and curricula development, as well as administrative duties within the program.

In 1992, Dr. Branch developed the Sport Marketing Quarterly, a professional sport marketing journal pub-lished four times per year. He served as editor for this prestigious and internationally acclaimed professional journal, which is now read in 20 countries, until 1995. It remains the only publication of its kind in the world.

Dr. Branch was selected in 1994 as one of three charter members of the NASSM/NASPE Sport Management Council (SMC), a national distinction. The SMC’s charge is to set the future agenda for sport management as an academic discipline. Also in 1994, he was selected to serve a 3-year appointment as a member of the Sport Management Program Review Council, which is charged with evaluating undergraduate and graduate programs’ curricula relative to criteria established for the discipline’s sport management program standards and review protocol process.

A former basketball and baseball player at UNC-Chapel Hill, High Volume Marketing Executive with the Xe-rox Corporation, and Vice President of Marketing with the IHL’s Indianapolis Ice (formerly Checkers) Hockey Club, Dr. Branch brings a unique, and often referred to as the “ideal”, background of sport, business, and academics to the field of sport management and marketing.

While at West Virginia University, Dr. Branch has been nominated for Teacher of the Year seven times and has won the award four times, in 1989, 1990, 1995 and 1996. As coordinator for sport management, Dr. Branch has initiated the graduate sport management alumni directory, as well as the graduate sport management starting line-up. In addition, he also signed the first joint venture between a professional sport franchise (Pittsburgh Pirates) in 1994. In 2002, he joined forces with the ESPN Sports Poll and the graduate program in sport management at WVU to provide data mining services.

Most recently, in 2003, Dr. Branch was selected as the vice president for student affairs for the newly formed Sport Marketing Association. Dr. Branch has both a master’s degree and a doctorate degree from Ohio University. He and his wife Jeannine have 3 (step) children.

Gonzalo A. Bravo is an Associate Professor of Sport Management at West Virginia University. A native of Santiago, Chile, Dr. Bravo completed a Masters in Sport Administration from Penn State University and a PhD in Sport Management from The Ohio State University. His research interests include organizational behavior as applied to sport organizations, sport management education, and policy aspects of sport, specifically from a cross-cultural perspective.

He has published in the International Journal of Sport Marketing and Sponsorship, Sport Management Educa-tion Journal, and the Journal of Sport Management. He is also the co-editor of the textbook, International Sport Management (Human Kinetics, 2012). Dr Bravo’s research has been significantly influenced by his unique blended experience of serving in both the practitioners’ and the academic world. Prior to joining academia, he worked for ten years (1991-2001) as the athletic director at Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica (Catholic University Sport Club) in Santiago, Chile. Since 2005 he has presented at the annual conferences of the North American Society of Sport Management (NASSM), North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS), and the International Society for Comparative Physical Education and Sport (ISCPES), and has been invited to present lectures and keynote speeches in Brazil, Chile, China, Macao, Japan, Mexico, South Korea and Venezuela.

Cindy Lee is an Assistant Professor of Sport Management at West Virginia University. She got her Master’s and Ph.D in Sport Management at University of Texas at Austin (2001) and The Ohio State University (2005) respectively.

Her work experi-ence also includes working at Korean branch of Octagon, a second largest sport marketing company in the world, as a mar-keter during Korea and Japan World Cup in planning and implementation of sponsorship rights. Her research interest lies in applying the principles of consumer behavior and psychology to the sport context, which helps understand and explain how and why sport spectators and fans behave in certain ways.

More specifically, her main research centers on consumption behaviors of spectators including game atten-dance and merchandise purchase. Her secondary research area is sponsorship mechanisms and influencing factors on corporate sponsorship effectiveness. Dr. Lee grew up in Seoul, Korea and enjoys playing tennis and golf.

Chris FullerSenior Associate AD, External Operations

University of Tennessee, Knoxville

In the Spotlight

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF: I graduated from Shepherd College (now University) in West Virginia with a degree in Political Science, then advanced to WVU to study Sports Management. I started my career in the athletic department at the University of North Carolina and also held positions at ACC Properties, FANSonly, Cavs/Gund Arena, and the Mid-American Conference before joining the University of Tennessee staff in 2004. In my current position, I oversee all external operations, including Development, Sales & Marketing, Ticket Operations, and Broadcasting and serve

as a member of the athletic department’s executive staff. My wife of eight years, Lori, is a graduate of the sports administration master’s program at Ohio University. We have two pugs, Rooney and Madigan.

HOW DID WVU HELP PREPARE YOU FOR A FUTURE IN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY? While I had been involved in athletics as a participant for most of my life, I had never worked in college athletics prior to my graduate work at WVU. The academic preparation exposed to me to the many facets of athletic administration beyond playing and coaching. More importantly, Dr. Branch was very focused on helping students gain internship opportunities that would provide potential career paths, In my case, he was instrumental in helping me land at North Carolina, which was the beginning of all the success that I’ve managed to have since.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO GET INTO THE INDUSTRY?Be willing to volunteer to get work experience. Test your passion. You will need to have a sincere passion for athletics to be successful. The pool of interested candidates will always be much larger than the num-ber of available jobs. Work on building your network early – though the industry has grown considerably, it’s still relatively small and many positions are filled though direct word-of-mouth recommendations.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE LEARNED THAT HELPS YOU EACH DAY? “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” – Charles Darwin The pace of change has accelerated tremendously during my professional life. To put it in perspective, my cohort has seen the following changes (to name a few): Internet, e-mail, cellphones, smartphones, HDTV, Sports Talk Radio, Facebook, Twitter and all other things social media, growth and proliferation of sports-specific channels and regional sports networks…you get the picture. The pace for current and future generations is exponentially faster. Be adaptable. You will have to reinvent yourself frequently to succeed.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF: Professionally, I am currently the Vice President of Sport and Sponsorship Solutions for Kantar Media North America. Kantar Media is the leading provider of media evaluation services to over 250 rights holders and brands worldwide. Kantar Media provides clients with a broad range of insights, from audience research, competitive intelligence, vital consumer behavior and digital insights, marketing and advertising effectiveness to social media monitoring. Personally, I am an avid WVU fan who tries to attend and/or view as much Mountaineer games as possible. I met my spouse at WVU, therefore, it is never a stretch to consume WVU 24/7 in our household.

HOW DID WVU HELP PREPARE YOU FOR A FUTURE IN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY? Stay humble, don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves and the experiences on campus are truly re-flective of the industry. It may seem odd at times why, as a student, you are asked to perform a task. But later in life, you will grin when you realize that your athletic department at WVU, along with the sport management program, prepared you for tasks such as management, marketing, promotions, research, etc.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO GET INTO THE INDUSTRY?Learn media and research. They are the core of all jobs in sports.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE LEARNED THAT HELPS YOU EACH DAY? One of the vital skills I learned is networking in and out of our program. I have and continue to have the common element of WVU with industry colleagues, but I have also opened my eyes to the variety of individuals and their backgrounds in the sport industry. Respect your counter-parts, even if they went to Pitt or Virginia Tech. And keep an open mind. Learning never stops and don’t pretend you know everything.
