How to Use $Values

American Angus Association®

3201 Frederick Avenue St. Joseph, MO 64506816-383-5100 [email protected]

www.angus.org 07/08

$Values have meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking oftwo individuals. For example, Bull X has a $B value of +26.00, and Bull Y hasa $B value of +16.00. If these bulls were randomly mated to a comparable setof females and the calves were exposed to the same environment, on the aver-age you would expect Bull X’s progeny to have a +10.00 dollar per head advan-tage in postweaning performance and carcass merit over Bull Y’s progeny(26.00 - 16.00 = +10.00 per head)

The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait, asan index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools are theresult of the application of industry-relevant market values toAngus genetics for preweaning, feedlot, and carcass merit.

Keep in mind that selection for an individual trait may be aneffective option for some producers. In this case, he might sellfed cattle and have significant carcass data on past groups ofsteers. This detailed data would allow him to identify the specif-ic trait in need of improvement. In this case, $B might not beused where the individual end-product EPDs could better assisthim in achieving the desired genetic change. The producer stillhas the opportunity to use $B as a tool in maintaining the bal-ance between feedlot and carcass traits.

The $W, $F, $G and $B values on individual animals and theSire Evaluation Report may be viewed at www.angus.org.

$Values should be used to complement the criteria that produc-ers already use when selecting bulls. Different management sit-uations may require varying emphasis on the genetic selection“tools” offered. For instance, one producer might have historical-ly sold calves at weaning, and rarely used the carcass EPDs inbull selection decisions. First he needs to meet his birth weightEPD/calving ease EPD requirements, depending on whetherheifers are to be bred. Then selections can be made on WeanedCalf Value ($W) which characterizes revenue and costs associ-ated with the preweaning phase. He would use $W to capturepreweaning dollar differences when comparing two sires of inter-est.

In addition, he may want to begin making general progress inimproving end-product value to create more predictability in hiscalves, or he may choose to retain ownership in the future. Inthis case, the $B could be used in concert with the selection cri-teria he has used in the past, such as $W, to make directionalchange in postweaning and carcass merit.

American Angus Association$Value Indexes

$Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollarsper head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding sim-plicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has meaning onlywhen used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. Forexample, just as with EPDs, variation in $Values between ani-mals indicates average expected differences in the relativevalue of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calvesare exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W): an index expressed in dollars perhead, is the expected average difference in future progeny per-formance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue andcost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F): an index expressed in dollars per head, isthe expected average difference in future progeny performancefor postweaning performance compared to progeny of othersires.

Grid Value ($G): an index expressed in dollars per head, is theexpected average difference in future progeny performance forcarcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Quality Grade ($QG) represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QGis intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcassmarbling (Marb) EPD, which is influenced by carcass marbling scores and ultrasound percent intramuscular fat (% IMF) measurements, contribute to $QG.

Yield Grade ($YG) represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YGis intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thicknessand weight into an economic value for red meat yield.

Beef Value ($B): an index expressed in dollars per head, is theexpected average difference in future progeny performance forpostweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of othersires. The $B value combines the contributions of $F and $G.

American Angus Association® Selection Tools Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.

GROWTH Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to the that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves.

MATERNAL Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.

Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Quality Grade ($QG) represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD, which is influenced by carcass marbling scores and ultrasound percent intramuscular fat (% IMF) measurements, contribute to $QG.

Yield Grade ($YG) $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. $G combines both $QG and $YG, and may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

UNDERSTANDING EPDS & HOW TO USE THEM

TechnicalBulletin

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) may be used to estimate how future progeny of the subject animal will compare to progeny of other animals within the breed. The key words are estimate, future, compare and within breed. EPDs are not designed to predict the performance of one or two progeny of a sire, but rather should be used to compare bulls based on estimated progeny performance. EPDs predict differences, not absolutes. They describe the genetic value of an animal much like a feed tag describes the contents of a feed sack.

EPDs are computed as part of the American Gelbvieh Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) program. The NCE program represents the application of the most recent genetic and computing technology for calculating EPDs for beef cattle. The Gelbvieh NCE program incorporates all available performance into the prediction of an individual’s EPD for a specific trait. An EPD may be derived from any combination of individual performance, pedigree, and progeny and grand progeny performance information. In addition, sire EPDs are more accurate than anything previously available because they account for the following factors:

• Genetic value of cows a bull is bred to.

• Environmental differences affecting contemporary groups.

• Quality of other sires in the contemporary group.

• Genetic trend.

GELBVIEH EPDS DEFINED

Following are short definitions for what each Gelbvieh EPD measures and the unit it is measured in. For the updated average EPDs for the Gelbvieh breed, visit www.gelbvieh.org.

Calving Ease Direct (CE): an EPD that is expressed as a ratio, with a higher ratio representing better (easier) calving ease. This value represents the direct influence a sire has on calving ease. Only first-calf heifer data is included.

Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight.

Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

Milk (MK): the genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Total Maternal (TM): a value that combines growth and milk information and a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. This value does not have an accompanying accuracy value.

Gestation Length (GL): this EPD is expressed in days and measures the days under or over normal gestation length a sire’s daughters can be expected to calve

Calving Ease Daughters (CED): an EPD expressed as a ratio for a sire’s daughters’ calving ease with a higher ratio being a more favorable calving ease. This value represents the calving ease that a sire transmits to his

daughters. Only first-calf daughters are considered in calculations the EPDs.

Scrotal Circumference (SC): value is expressed in centimeters of adjusted yearling scrotal circumference.

Stayability (ST): predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. Stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Carcass Weight (CW): expressed in pounds of carcass weight adjusted to a constant fat endpoint.

Rib Eye Area (RE): expressed in square inches of rib eye muscle area adjusted to a constant fat enpoint.

Marbling (MB): expressed in degrees of marbling score, a determinant of USDA Quality Grade. Value is adjusted to a constant fat endpoint.

Days to Finish (DtF): expressed in days to reach a constant fat endpoint, which is commonly used in the feedlot to determine when an animal is finished with the appropriate amount of fat cover. When evaluating two potential sires with comparable EPDs for other traits, the sire with the lesser value for DtF will produce progeny that will finish sooner with potentially lower feed costs.

Feedlot Merit (FM): expressed in dollars per head, value passed to progeny. The Feedlot Merit EPD measures the dollar value associated with the expected gain and feedlot efficiency of progeny when fed in a “typical” feedlot arrangement.

Carcass Value (CV): expressed in dollar value per head, comparing progeny of one animal to another in dollar differences when progeny are sold on a grid. This value is a true

HHybrids. It started with single-cross corn; it has dominated broiler and swine production, the state conservation depart-ment releases hybrid game fish, and now the car companies are promoting hybrids. All for the same reason; there are advan-tages to hybrids.

The movement to hybrid seedstock in beef production is in its infancy and increased usage in commercial beef production is inevitable. Why…because hybrids simplify many of the challenges a commercial beef producer faces and increase profitability. Hybrids also stabilize breed composition; in turn that provides more, not less, consistency in a calf crop. I remember sitting in Beef Production class and a number of Animal Breeding classes while the professor diagramed crossbreeding systems for beef production. I caught myself wondering how anyone could sleep though such a stimulating lecture. It’s all about heterosis, breed complementarity, maternal heterosis and potentially utilizing terminal breeds, what could be better? I’ve since figured out it was all about maximizing complexity, ignoring simplicity and real-world application…the smartest students may have been the ones napping. Let’s take a look at a basic two-breed rotation. The textbook model assumes that you’ll have bulls of each breed and separate your cows into two breeding groups based on their sire breed. In big herds, where it is feasible, it requires extra labor to sort cows and calves, making sure you don’t split a pair, and it doesn’t fit with improved management practices like rotational grazing. The three-breed textbook model, to take full advantage of maternal heterosis, is just one step more complicated.

The Crossbreeding Reality The reality approach in most herds is to buy a bull of one breed use him two years and then replace him with one from the second breed. This is especially true

in small, single herd sire cowherds, but for simplicity even many big herds rotate breeds every other year. Keeping replacement females every cycle in this system means the resulting calf crop has a variety of percentages, from 50% and up, of the sire breed used in that cycle. How does that provide consistency? The temptation might be to consider straight breeding commercial cows. But the merits of crossbreeding are too great for a commercial cattleman to ignore. Crossbreeding provides heterosis in many traits but in particular the traits that are the most difficult to apply selection pressure for improvement. Cow longevity, lifetime productivity and calf survivability, are examples where heterosis can give a 25 percent or higher advantage.

The heterosis advantages in growth and milk are smaller, and in carcass traits we see little hybrid vigor. In these traits breed complementarity, combining breeds with offsetting strengths and weaknesses comes to play.

The Balancer® Advantage As a commercial producer, if I had straight-bred or high-percentage British cattle, I’d use Gelbvieh bulls until I had

some Gelbvieh influence in a majority of my cowherd. At that point, I’d switch to Balancers® to stabilize the level of Gelbvieh and British in my herd at a desirable level. Under this scenario, the skeptics argue that somehow the parent breeds will genetically segregate in the offspring, yielding more variability, but this just isn’t the case. Consistency in the calf crop comes from the progeny being very similar in breed composition. The data from the Gelbvieh Alliance and Meat Animal Research Center agree that combining continental and British influence at the right levels pay big dividends in feed efficiency and targeting a desirable, and profitable, level of Yield and Quality grades.

In the pasture, Gelbvieh influence in your cowherd that will provide great fertility, milk and growth, while keeping mature cow size in check. There is a reason commercial beef producers appreciate the advantages of Balancer bulls. They take the headaches out of crossbreeding, provide heterosis, and let producers focus on the windows of acceptability for feedlot performance and end product merit. Balancers are the easy shortcut to profitability.

Why Balancers®? Crossbreeding made easy.Wayne Vanderwert, Ph.D.

Birth Weight

BW A sire's expected progeny difference (lb) for mature dam equivalent birth weight of calf. Progeny of sires with lower BW EPD values will generally be born with less calving difficulty.

Weaning Weight WW

A sire's expected progeny difference (lb) for 205-day, mature dam equivalent WW. A sire's WW EPD is an indication of growth to weaning. WW EPD does not indicate milk production.

Yearling Weight

YW

A sire's expected progeny difference (lb) for 365-day, mature dam equivalent YW. The YW EPD is an indication of the progeny's post weaning gain performance. YW EPD is calculated by combining WW and post weaning gain performance to predict expected differences in weight performance at one year of age.

Milk MK A prediction of the maternal genetic component of weaning weight, MK EPD does not directly indicate more or less milk production. The MK EPD is the expected difference (lb), due to maternal performance (which includes milk production) in the weaning weight of calves out of a bull's daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero MK EPD. A higher EPD indicates that the bull's daughters should produce more pounds of calf due to increased maternal performance, but a higher MK EPD may also indicate a need for higher nutritional inputs to support increased milk production.

Total Maternal TM

The expected overall difference (lb) in weaning weight of calves out of a bull's daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero maternal weaning EPD. The maternal weaning EPD is a measure of the genetic component of both growth and maternal ability. It is calculated by adding one-half the WW EPD to the MK EPD, and as a result, TM EPD is the only EPD for which there is no corresponding ACC.

Calving Ease Direct CED

Expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Calving Ease Maternal CEM

Expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference

SC

Measured in centimeters, SC has been shown to have a strong influence on male fertility, however selection for extremes in scrotal size is not an effective method of affecting change in the trait, as it is subject to extreme environmental variation. While larger actual scrotal circumference is important in terms of how the bull can be expected to perform his duties of servicing cows, only SC EPD predicts the genetic value of the bull for SC that can be transmitted to his calves. Additionally, heifers sired by bulls with high SC EPD have been shown to reach puberty at significantly earlier ages than do daughters of bulls with low SC EPD.

Ribeye Area REA

REA EPD is a predictor of the muscularity of an animal's offspring in square inches. The REA EPD presented in this summary is for ultrasound REA as opposed to carcass REA. While there is a high correlation between ultrasound REA and carcass REA, they are not the same trait. Genetic progress for improved muscling is not direct using REA EPD from ultrasound, but still much improved over using actual ultrasound REA measures.

% Intramuscular

Fat IMF

IMF EPD is presented in units of percent fat as determined by ultrasound. While IMF from ultrasound has a strong positive relationship to carcass marbling scores, they are not the same trait. Genetic progress for improved marbling is not direct using IMF EPD, but still much improved over using actual ultrasound IMF measures.

Fat Thickness FT

The ultrasound Fat Thickness EPD is comparable to the carcass Fat Thickness EPD and has the same limitations. In most cases, it is more desirable to select for less fat at the 12th rib, but selection to extremes can result in decreased carcass quality. Like the carcass equivalent, this EPD is measured in inches.

THE PROGRAMThe Charolais Advantage® tag program has been established to age- and source-verify

known Charolais genetics. This will be accomplished using IMI Global’s USVerified™

approved Process Verified Program (PVP).

THE VALUE OF VERIFICATIONMany of our export markets reopened in 2006. In order for U.S. beef to qualify, it

must be age- and source-verified. Many feedlots are currently offering premiums forthese known cattle. In addition, the Charolais breed has an opportunity to capture pre-miums based on the value of the Charolais carcass.

This program helps reduce the cost of on-site auditing through the use of phoneaudits and makes the evaluation process completely objective. The scoring processrequires ranches/farms (suppliers) to provide information requested during an on-siteaudit. This information is used to establish your ability to supply age- and source-veri-fied cattle. Your ranch/operation may be visited during random on-site evaluations.

Source and age verification helps you:1. Prove you are doing what you say you are doing2. Gain access to progressive marketing options3. Make available third party (unbiased) vs. self evaluation

PARTICIPATIONProducers utilizing Charolais genetics and wishing to enroll and tag cattle as age- and

source-verified may participate.• Eligible cattle must be sired by registered Charolais bull or son of a registered

Charolais bull (the registration number of either the sire or the grandsire must beprovided)

• Only cattle enrolled by the original owner are eligible.• All cattle enrolled are owned by the producer participant.• Only enrolled cattle will be identified with Charolais Advantage® tags.• The invoice included with the Charolais Advantage® tag shipment must be

maintained on-site for a minimum of three years. Documentation of calving, bullturnout and/or breeding dates must be maintained on-site or electronically for aminimum of three years.

• All cattle enrolled in this program have a known age by day/month/year.

ENROLLMENT• Participants may enroll by contacting Marilou Wegner at the American-

International Charolais Association, (816) 464-5977, ext. 400 [email protected].

• All participants must first complete a training and verification packet before tagswill be allocated. It is available through the AICA office.

• Calves may be enrolled once they are born. Because this is an age and sourceverification program, tags cannot be allocated to animals without a known birthdate.

FEES• The Charolais Advantage program has an annual fee of $225. This fee must

accompany the completed USVerified™ Packet.

IMPORTANT POINTSIt is important you know:1. Your information is kept confidential2. Only information necessary to verify source, age and health protocol is requested.3. We do not share your information and only make it available to the USDA when

necessary to verify IMI Global’s USVerified™ program.

3 Herds, Progeny and Daughters in Production (DIP) – reflects the number of herds this sire has been used in, the number of progeny whose performance was evaluated for this edition of the sire summary, and the number of daughters whose offspring were evaluated for calculating the Maternal Milk EPD.

4 Calving Ease Direct (CE) - expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first calf heifers. A higher value indicates greater calving ease. It predicts the average difference in unassisted births with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers.

5 Birth Weight EPD – the expected difference in average birth weight (pounds) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth.

6 Weaning Weight EPD – the expected difference in average weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects the genetic influence on pre-weaning growth rate.

7 Yearling Weight EPD – the expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny. The evaluation reflects genetic influence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate.

8 Maternal Milk EPD – the genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to express in pounds of weaning weight in her calves due to her maternal ability through mothering instinct and milk.

9 Calving Ease Maternal (MCE) - expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first calf daughters. A higher value indicates greater

Sire summaries use the term Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) to express genetic transmitting ability of a sire for the various traits listed. An EPD is a prediction of how future progeny of a sire are expected to perform in a particular trait relative to other sires in the analysis. The key word is “difference.” The EPD itself does not imply “good” or “bad” performance. But rather, the EPD gives a prediction of the average difference to expect in the performance of a sire's progeny relative to other sires in the same analysis. The EPD for a given trait on each bull listed in the Sire Summary is compared to every other bull in this sire summary report. The EPD is reported as a plus or minus value in the unit which the trait is measured. Each EPD reported is accompanied with an Accuracy (ACC) figure. ACC is a measure of reliability regarding the EPD evaluation for a performance trait. Accuracy is reported as a decimal number between zero and one: large values indicate greater accuracy and more certainty that the EPD will show little change as additional progeny information is obtained.

calving ease. It predicts the average difference in unassisted births with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

10 Total Maternal EPD – a value to predict the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire's daughters due to genetics for growth and maternal ability. Total Maternal is calculated by adding 1/2 the WWT EPD to the Maternal Milk EPD.

11 Scrotal Circumference EPD — the expected difference in scrotal circumference (expressed in centimeters) of a bulls male offspring at yearling compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. Research has also indicted a relationship between increased scrotal circumference and decreased age at puberty for a sires daughters.

12 Carc, Ultra, U Hrd – reflects the number of carcass progeny used in computing the carcass EPD, the number of progeny with ultrasound data used in computing the carcass EPD and the number of herds that have contributed ultrasound records for progeny.

13 Hot Carcass Weight EPD (HCW) – the expected difference in average hot carcass weight of progeny at a constant age endpoint.

14 Ribeye Area EPD (REA) – the expected difference in average ribeye area of progeny at a constant age endpoint.

15 12th-13th Rib Fat Thickness EPD (FAT) – the expected difference in average fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib of progeny at a constant age endpoint.

16 Marbling EPD (MARB) – the expected difference in average USDA marbling score of progeny at a constant age endpoint.

Trait Leaders Progeny Proven sires identified from the evaluation as trait leaders are those that excel in a specific trait. The determination of a trait leader is based on meeting superior standards in both EPD and accuracy values for a trait. The sires listed include the top 25 sires for BWT, WWT, YWT, and Maternal Milk considering EPD criterion with an accuracy of .55 or greater for that trait. (Top 10 Sires for HCW, REA, FAT, MARB).

Multiple Trait Sires: Active Progeny Proven sires identified from the genetic evaluation as multiple trait leaders are those sires that excel in the traits of Birth Weight, Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight and Total Maternal. These traits are each standardized so that equal emphasis can be placed on each of the 4 traits. To qualify for the list a sire must be listed as a Progeny Proven Sire, must have an accuracy value greater than .55 for weaning weight, and must be in the top 50th percentile for BWT, WWT, YWT, MAT, and TotMat EPD among active sires.

Active SiresProgeny Proven Sires (Denoted PP): These sires are those that have met an accuracy standard of .55 in the weaning weight EPD evaluation and have at least five (5) calves sired by him with performance information reported within the last two years. The weaning weight EPD factor is used as a selection criterion as it is least subject to bias and the trait with the most information. EPD and accuracy values for other traits are published for these sires. Sires listed in this category have sired enough performance-tested progeny to warrant considerable predictability.

Young Sires (Denoted YS): These sires must be born after January 1, 2005 and meet an accuracy of .35 in the weaning EPD analysis. The value of this category is to distribute information on young sires with potential for use in breeding programs. The EPD values expressed should be considered in relation to lower accuracy values.

Inactive Sires

The Inactive Sire Section represents sires born since January 1, 1998, that have an accuracy of .55 for weaning weight EPD and are not listed as a Progeny Proven or Young Sire.

Sire-InformationSires are listed in alphabetical order according to their registered name within each section. Also included in this column are the bullʼs registration number, date of birth, sire (S), breeder (B) and current owners (O) and Horned/Polled designation. AI box indicates the sire has been issued an AI permit for semen sales. 1. Calving Ease – Direct (CE) CE EPDs are based on calving ease scores and birth weights. More positive EPDs are favorable and indicate easier calving. The EPD for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age. An EPD in a black box indicates that the bull is a trait leader. For more information see the section titled “Percentile Breakdown of EPDs”. 2. Birth Weight (BW) Progeny of the sire above can be expected to weigh an average of 3.2 lb. more at birth than progeny sired by a bull with an EPD of -1.0 lb. (2.2 minus -1.0 = 3.2 lb.) Birth weight is an indicator of calving ease. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD. To learn more about how to use accuracy when evaluating EPDs please refer to the section “Accuracy and Confidence Range”.3. Weaning Weight (WW) WW EPD reflects pre-weaning growth. Calves sired by the above bull should have a 20 lb. advantage in 205-day adjusted weaning weight compared to calves sired by a bull with an EPD of +10 lb. (30 minus 10.0 = 20 lb.).4. Yearling Weight (YW) YW EPD for this sire indicates his progeny should be 59 lb. above the average of progeny of a bull with an EPD of 0 lb. YW EPD reflects differences in the 365-day adjusted yearling weight for progeny. It is the best estimate of total growth. 5. Maternal Milk (MM) The milking ability of a sireʼs daughters expressed in lb. of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weight of siresʼ daughtersʼ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire in the above example should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production over the entire lactation. 6. Maternal Milk & Growth (MG)Maternal Milk & Growth reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of daughtersʼ progeny weaning weight. The bull in the above example should sire daughters with progeny weaning weights averaging 19 lb. heavier than progeny of a bullʼs daughters with a MG EPD of 10 lb. (29 minus 10.0 = 19 lb.). It is equal to one-half the sireʼs weaning weight EPD, plus all of his milk EPD. No accuracy is associated with this since it is simply a mathematical combination of two other EPDs. Sometimes referred to as “total maternal” or “combined maternal.” 7. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) The MCE EPD indicates how easily a sire's daughters will calve at two years of age. When compared to the daughters of other sires.

8. Scrotal Circumference (SC) Measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility. It is related to the bull's own semen quantity and quality, and is also associated with age at puberty of sons and daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger age at puberty. Yearling sons of the above sire should have yearling scrotal circumference measurements that average 0.7 cm. larger than progeny by a bull with an EPD of 0.0 cm. In this genetic analysis, a multiple-trait model was used for scrotal circumference. Weaning weight was used as a predictor variable to increase the prediction accuracy of SC EPDs. Therefore, an animal with a weaning weight EPD should also have an SC EPD.9. Rib Fat (FAT) The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, twelfth-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative, FAT EPDs are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. 10. Ribeye Area (REA) REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measures based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. 11. Marbling (MARB) MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of intramuscular fat and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. 12. Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) A maternally focused index that has a production system based on 1,000 Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed toward CHB. This index is more critical of CE than the BII$ and also has significant weight on fertility. There is positive weight on WW and a slightly negative weight on YW which promotes early growth and then a slow down on growth to keep mature size manageable. The emphasis of IMF is greater than the emphasis of REA. This is true because of the price difference of the choice-select spread and the fact that there is very little incentive to produce cattle better than a yield grade 3. The question comes up concerning the fact that the CHB program has been successful because of the acceptance of Select grade cattle. In answer to this, we are using a crossbreeding production system that could sell cattle on several grids and the CHB program is installing a choice product. This index is geared to service any commercial program that runs British cross cows. 13. Calving Easy Index (CEZ$) A general purpose index that focuses on identifying bulls that can be used on heifers and then ultimately the calves will be marketed through CHB. As you might expect, CE and MCE carries significant

weight in this index along with fertility. There is very little weight put on growth traits and less emphasis on carcass. Remember, this is a general index that is specifically designed to be used in a heifer program.14. Brahman Influence Index (BII$) A maternally focused index that is based on a 1,000 head cow herd of Brahman x Hereford cross cows. The progeny for this index will be harvested in a commodity based system since CHB does not accept Brahman influenced cattle into the program. This index has less emphasis for CE than any of the other indexes. There is emphasis on both REA and IMF since the cattle will be harvested through a commodity market. The largest emphasis is in fertility which is measured solely by Scrotal Circumference at the present time. Obviously, the target for this index is the producers in the Southern regions of the US where the bulls are typically sold to commercial cattlemen that have Brahman influenced cow herds. 15. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) A terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested, so they need to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have much more emphasis on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program. This index could be used heavily in the Midwest where bulls are used in rotational breeding programs to produce cattle in a retained ownership program or simply sold to backgrounders. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that nothing is retained in the herd. 16. Confidence Range The Confidence Range indicates the range in values for which the “true” EPD should probably lie 95 percent of the time. For most animals, one can be fairly confident that an EPD should be within this range in subsequent genetic analyses. For more information about understanding the use of Confidence Ranges, refer to page 6. 17. HerdsNumber of herds in which progeny were raised with recorded measurements. This includes herd counts from PACE member countries. Number of herds gives a general indication of progeny distribution for each of the five traits. 18. Progeny The number of progeny sired by the bull with recorded measurements for each specific trait. This includes the progeny counts from PACE member countries. Number of progeny should not be used in lieu of accuracy, but simply to further clarify accuracy values. 19. Daughters The number of daughters sired by the bull which have produced progeny with weaning weight records. This includes daughter counts from PACE member countries. Number of daughters should not be used in lieu of accuracy, but simply to further clarify Maternal Milk and Maternal Milk & Growth accuracy values.

For an explanation of the percentile distributionslisted for each trait see the section titled “Percentile Breakdown of EPDs”. For an explanation of trait leader designations see bottom of page 6.

Predicting Profit…

Completely Described Beef Production:

Profit starts at Reproduction!Research has shown that reproductionhas four to ten times the economicimpact of carcass traits. Yet, Red Angusis the only breed that completelydescribes cow herd reproduction frombirth through profitable lifespan. RedAngus reproductive EPDs are expressedas percent probability, meaning the high-er the EPD, the more likely the desiredobservation.

Profitable reproduction can beboiled down to success in thesefour Economically RelevantTraits:Calving Ease Direct (CED): The expect-ed progeny difference of calves beingborn unassisted from two year-oldheifers. The Red Angus CED modelaccounts for contemporary group birthweight differences and calving easescores.Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): The expectedprogeny difference of heifers conceivingto calve at two years of age. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Theexpected progeny difference of a givenanimal's daughters calving unassisted attwo years of age.Stayability (STAY): The expected proge-ny difference of a bull's daughtersremaining in the herd until at least sixyears of age. Females that don't stay inthe herd that long are losing money, andthey also contribute to a higher rate ofreplacement females that the ranchercan’t cash crop.

To receive a FREE 8-page “Rancher’sGuide to EPDs” or a Red Angus SireSummary, contact this breeder or theRed Angus Association of America.

EPDs (Expected ProgenyDifferences) are the mostpowerful selection tool thebeef industry has ever had.The use of EPDs has convertedselecting range bulls from an artform to a science, better preparingcow/calf producers to make geneticdecisions which may ultimatelyimprove their profitability.

Better Selection Tools Make Better BullsRed Angus remains the only majorbeef breed with mandatory TotalHerd Reporting (THR), whichrequires the annual production ofeach cow and the performance ofevery calf raised through weaning tobe reported. Red Angus EPDs arecalculated from complete contempo-rary group data - not just the datafrom the calves good enough to reg-ister.

…The Ranchers Guide to EPDs

Reproduction • GrowthCarcass • Maintenance

Cows Eat Money! That’s why RedAngus published the Mature CowMaintenance Energy EPD (ME EPD),becoming the first beef breed to evaluatethe expense side of the ranchers' profitequation. Here are the facts: • ME predicts differences in maintenanceenergy requirements of mature daughters ofa bull.• Maintenance energy requirements aredirectly related to feed cost - often producers’largest single expense.• The lower the ME EPD, the less feeddaughters require to maintain body condition.• ME can be used to ensure environmental fit,and to estimate additional feed required byincreased growth & milk.

Growth & Carcass Traits!Red Angus publishes genetic pre-dictions for birth weight, weaningweight, yearling weight, milk, totalmaternal, marbling score, rib eyearea, and 12th rib fat thickness.Red Angus utilizes real time ultra-sound data in conjunction with actu-al carcass data in the calculation ofmarbling and rib eye area EPDs.Genetic predictions for each ofthese revenue traits are more reli-able because they are built withTotal Herd Reporting.

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.
