WIAA State Boys Golf ChampionshipsA RECAP OF THE 2014 CHAMPIONSHIP

HELP FROM HIS FRIENDSDivision 1 medalist Kaylor Steger of Oak

Creek and sixth-place finisher DylanPatscot of Kettle Moraine are good friends,as both players explain in this MilwaukeeJournal Sentinel story. Evidence of thatrelationship could be seen after the playershit their tee shots on the par-5 ninth holeTuesday. After Steger hit his tee shot into afairway bunker on No. 9, Patscot reachedout a hand for what appeared to be a mo-tivational fist bump as the two strode offthe tee. Steger shot a front-nine 40 Tuesday, but responded with four birdies on the backnine to win the Division 1 individual race byone stroke.

Mequon Homestead received some inspira-tion on Tuesday from reigning Wisconsin StateAmateur champion Jordan Niebrugge, a2012 Homestead graduate. Niebrugge – com-ing off his appearance in the Masters Tourna-ment this spring and the Walker Cup last fall –won the 2012 WIAA Division 1 individual title. On Tuesday, he sat behind the second tee atUniversity Ridge as the Homestead playerscame through. As big a name as Niebrugge has become on

the amateur golf scene, Waterford High

School might have gone one better on thestar-power meter this week. Waterford resi-dent Joyce Malisonwas on the course work-ing in her role as an assistant coach, a job shehas held for about 15 years, according to Wa-terford head coach Mike Harmeling.Malison, a 1975 Wisconsin State Golf As-

sociation Hall of Fame inductee, won fivetournaments on the LPGA Tour in the 1950sand ‘60s, including the 1960 Women’s West-ern Open, then an LPGA major. Malison was amember of the 1954 Curtis Cup team.

Two teams repeat, one wins first titleHOMESTEAD, CATHOLIC MEMORIAL AND LANCASTER ALL WIAA WINNERS

Confusion turns into celebration for D1 winner Mequon HomesteadThere was no shortage of excitement at this

year’s WIAA State Boys Golf Championships held atUniversity Ridge GC in Verona. It all came down to a last-minute scoring decision

by tournament officials to determine the Division 1team title winner. Mequon Homestead High School led a three-team

race for most of the tournament until that lead wasovertaken by Green Bay Notre Dame Academy withsix holes left. The Highlanders fought their way backand regained the lead by one, and after the comple-tion of play the two teams thought the title wasgoing to Homestead. Not so fast, said scoring officials. A Tritons golfer

shot a 78 but his score was posted as a 77, whichwould have meant a tie and a two-team playoff.“Doing the math, everybody seemed to have us

winning by one,” said Homestead head coach SteveO’Brien. “It seemed like a done deal, and then all ofa sudden we were told it might be a tie.”After a lengthy deliberation, the score was cor-

rected to 78 and confusion turned back into cele-bration for Homestead. “Talk about a change of emotions for all of us,”

said O’Brien. “We were so elated and then a quickstroke of reality set in. But once the mistake wasrectified, it was determined we were the winner byone large stroke.”The Highlanders’ two-day total of 42-over-par 618

(308-310) was enough to edge out Notre Dame

(313-306–619) by one. Eau Claire Memorial HighSchool shot 310-314–624 to take third.Homestead junior Charlie Maleki led the way for

the repeat champ Highlanders, posting a 2-over-par 146 (72-74). “Charlie Malecki was terrific both days,” said

O’Brien. “He played terrific golf. He came mentallyprepared to play and let his ability take over.”His teammates, senior Marty Kimmel and fresh-

man Robbie Morway, both tied for 37th by shoot-ing 13-over-par 157.Kaylor Steger, playing individually for Oak Creek

High School, went into the clubhouse as the leaderafter day one by firing an opening-round 68. Al-though he went on to bogey five of his first 10 holesin the final round, he caught fire on the back ninewith a birdie run that started by making a 25-footputt on par-3 No. 12. Adding a bit of his own drama to the day, Steger

made a three-putt bogey on the 18th hole to allowthree other golfers to remain in an already tight race.As clubhouse leader, he would have to wait and

see how it all played out, but Oak Creek saw its firstindividual state champion crowned. Steger finishedthe tournament with a 2-under-par 142 (68-74).“I had one goal for this year,” said Steger. “(To win)

state.” Steger edged out runners-up Bennett Hutson of

Onalaska High School (69-74–143) and Ricky Kuiperof Racine Case High School (72-72–143) by onestroke. Brookfield Central High School senior EddieWajda took fourth with an even-par 144 (72-72).

Catholic Memorial holds off Edgewood torepeat as D2 champsThe story in Division 2 was of two teams in a

heated battle as Waukesha Catholic Memorial HighSchool fought hard to hold off Madison Edgewoodand win its second-straight team title. Heading into the final round, Edgewood held a

four-shot lead over the incumbent. But a team scoreof 302 by Catholic Memorial in the final round wasenough to jump over Edgewood and regain the crown.Catholic Memorial posted the lowest two-day

score of the tournament, a 31-over-par 607, for thewin. Edgewood finished seven strokes back at 301-313–614. Sheboygan Falls fin-ished a distant third at71-over-par 647 (316-331). After the win, Catholic Memo-

rial head coach Steve Plechatytipped his cap to Edgewood.“Congrats to Edgewood becausethey didn’t give this away,” saidPlechaty. “A 614 is going to beatmost of the Division 1 field today. They played outstanding. Ourguys were just a little bit bettertoday.” The Crusaders were led by sen-

ior Dylan Allen who shot 1-over-par 145 (73-72) to finish third overall. Junior TylerKing shot 76-75–151 to finish seventh.Sophomore Chris Colla of Winnebago Lutheran

Academy in Fond du Lac earned medalist honors byposting a 4-under-par 140 (68-72). Runner-up wasSheboygan Falls sophomore Matt Bachmanwho shottwo rounds of 72 to finish four strokes back at 144.

Runner-up in 2013, Lancaster grabs D3 titleAfter finishing as runner-up in 2013, Lancaster High

School took home the Division 3 team title – its firstever – by posting a 51-over-par 627 (317-310).The Flying Arrows came into the final round with

an eight-stroke lead over last year’s winner Osseo-Fairchild. Not only did they maintain their compo-sure, they shaved seven strokes off of their openinground 317.“When it was all said and done, I had to sit down,”

said Lancaster head coach Brad Sturmer. “Theemotions got to me a little bit mostly because Iknow how much hard work these boys have put in.

I’ve always preached hard workequals success and they boughtinto that. “

The Flying Arrows were led bysenior Zach Hentrich, who fireda 5-over-par 149 (74-75). “Ourgoal was to get here and play wellenough to win, and our guysplayed well,” said Hentrich. “I’mproud of our guys. It was an un-believable team effort. It feelsgood to be on top.”

Osseo-Fairchild finished sec-ond with a 74-over-par 650 (325-325), while Racine St. Catherine’s

High School shot 330-321–651 to take third.Lancaster’s Hentrich finished the tournament in

second place, seven strokes behind medalistThomas Longbella of McDonnell Central inChippewa Falls, who fired a 2-under-par 142 (69-73).Joe Markgren of Osseo-Fairchild (78-74–152) took third.

PENALTIES ASSESSEDPlaying the final foursome in Division 2 Tuesday

afternoon, River Valley’s Alex Wedige was as-sessed a two-stroke penalty when he acciden-tally grounded his putter in the line of his putt.River Valley eventually finished fourth in Division2, two strokes behind Sheboygan Falls.Kenosha Tremper senior Nick Perri earned a

two-stroke penalty Monday when he mistakenlyhit his tee shot from the forward tees on the par-3 eighth hole. (With five girls at state, two teeinggrounds were marked on each hole.) A secondplayer in the group was about to pull the triggeron the wrong tee when a rules official stoppedhim. Perri re-hit from the back tee and, with thepenalty, recorded a double-bogey 5.
