Coaching StaffShaun Wiseman Head Coach Shaun Wiseman begins his sixth season as Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach at the University of the Ozarks. Wiseman, a native of Rogers, Ark., has proven to be among

the top young collegiate tennis coaches in the region. Wiseman has brought both pro-grams to new heights since his arrival, quickly establishing a strong athletic and academ-ic tradition. Under Wiseman, both programs vastly improved in year one, with the men’s team nearly qualifying for the playoffs. From there, Wiseman has built a men’s program that received its first-ever regional ranking from theIntercollegiateTennisAssociationandawomen’s program that posted the most wins in nearly a decade. The 2013 year marked a record-break-ing season for both the men’s and women’s program. The men posted a school-best 12-4 record and the team was ranked No. 16 in theWestRegionbytheITA.Wisemanisal-ready the school’s winningest men’s coach in theNCAADivisionIIIera.Thewomen’steamhad the most wins since 2003 and five play-ers earned All-Conference honors in 2013. ThewomenalsohadthreeplayersontheITAScholar-Athlete Team. Wiseman’s 2013 success extended be-yond the court as both programs earned the ITATeamAcademicAwardformaintainingateam grade point average above 3.20, mark-ing the second straight season each program has earned the distinction. During his tenure, he has had a combined 35 players earn ASC All-AcademicTeamstatus.Injustfiveyears,he has coached the conference Freshman of the Year, the conference Distinguished Schol-ar-Athlete, four Academic All-District perform-ersand13ITAScholar-Athletes.Additionally,23 of his players have earned All-Conference recognition. Prior to Ozarks, he was the assistant wom-en’scoachatNCAADivisionIIArkansasTechUniversity (2005-2007) where he helped with all aspects of the Golden Suns Tennis program.

ference performer as a freshman in doubles play. She earned All-Conference again in 2013 after posting a 10-6 record in doubles. 2014 Women’s Outlook The women’s tennis team will lean on veteran leadership for a chance to make the playoffs in 2014.In2013,Ozarkspostedthemostwins(7)since2003. With momentum in its favor, Ozarks returns four seniors and two juniors to build the team around. However, the Lady Eagles did lose two All-Conference performers and another talented player from last season. “Itwillbeadifficultchallengereplacingthosethree from a year ago, but we still have some tal-ent on campus,” said Head Coach Shaun Wise-man. “We fought last year through a couple of big injuries. We battled and scratched and clawed for all seven wins. None of them came easy.” Wiseman’s goal is to build from last season’s success and have his team in the playoffs. “Our expectations are to make the playoffs,” he said. “We feel like if we can steal a couple courts here and there, then we can sneak our way into the playoffs.” Seniors Whitney Lewis, Kalli Simpson, Macie Kelley and LeAnan White lead the Lady Eagles into the 2014 season. The junior class includes Mollie Grace Wilkinson and Megan Wallace. Lewis, Simp-son and Wilkinson were All-Conference performers last season. Freshman Kristen Swafford is a nice addition to the lineup, according to Wiseman. “Our seniors have given a lot to our program the last four years,” said Wiseman. “Whitney is playing at the top of our lineup this year. She works hard every day. She is a great example both on and off the court. She is very much the sum of all of her parts. Macie has come so far since she has been here. She has grown and become a very good leader. And Kalli Simpson is a talented player.” Wiseman has made a name for himself within the American Southwest Conference as he has turned the men’s and women’s programs into re-spectable and competitive teams. “Our expectations are to win the matches we are supposed to win, and then steal a couple of matches that we are not supposed to win,” he said. “We will be competitive and will be in the playoffhunt.Itisjustamatterofstealingafewmatches from teams that are just as good as us.”

2014 Men’s Outlook

10

The rising men’s tennis team has already experi-enced plenty of success, but now the 2014 team has to prove it is ready to take the program even higher. For Head Coach Shaun Wiseman, Ozarks is wor-thy of its No. 16 preseason regional ranking from the IntercollegiateTennisAssociation, butthequestionremainshowhisteamwillhandlebigmoments.Ifhisteam can do that, the 2014 season could be special. “There will be two or three matches this year where it will come down to who handles the mo-ment better,” said Wiseman, who is entering his sixth season at Ozarks. “We have been working to make surewhenthemomentarrives, wecanhandleit.Ithink last year the moment got too big for some of the players and it cost us a couple of matches. We are hoping we have grown from that and when apressurefilledmomentcomes, suchasacrucialpoint or big service game, we will be able to exe-cute and close out matches we should win.” Ozarks is built around a strong junior class that includes All-Conference players Todd Turner, Bishop Bass, Greg Knaggs and Corey Dillard. Seniors Mi-chael Skimbo and Scott Eibes are veteran players that Wiseman will rely on throughout the season. “Scott and Michael are our two senior leaders,” said Wiseman. “Michael is a warrior. He is the ulti-mate teammate and one of the best team guys thatI’veeverhadtheprivilegeofcoaching.Scotthas won a lot of matches. He is a true captain. He is working with the younger guys and doing a great job mentoring.” The talented junior class has already made a huge mark on the program. The group has com-binedfor22winsandpushedtheprogramtoitsfirstregional ranking. “Todd and Bishop are at the top of our lineup again,” said Wiseman. “Those guys have won a lot of big matches. They push each other to get better. They are great competitors. They have overshad-owed what Greg and Corey have been able to accomplish. They have won a lot, too. They will be critical at the three and four spots to win some big matches this year.” Inadditiontohisveterans,Wisemanwilluseyounger players in 2014. Newcomers Tyler Keel and Dillon Murray are expected to contribute immediate-ly.

“Tyler has shaken things up in the lineup,” he said. “He enjoys the spotlight and will contribute this year. The moment doesn’t seem to get too big for him. Dillon is in our top eight. He is a lefty with a big game.” Wiseman believes his team is fueled by a couple of key conference losses a year ago that cost them post-season play. “Our goal is not to just win more matches than we won the year before,” said Wiseman. “Our goal is to win the important matches and ultimately make the playoffs and have a chance to win the playoffs.” The Eagles ended last season ranked in the same position (16th) regionally after a record settingeffort.Theteamfinishedwiththemostwins in school history within the NCAA Division IIIera,postinga12-4overallmarkontheyear.Ozarks was 3-3 in the American Southwest Con-ference. “The awards and success aren’t enough for these guys,” said Wiseman. “We just have to manage the big moments and keep everything in perspective.”
