Dear Seahawk Fans,

Thank you for being a part of another exciting softball season at UNCW! The University of North Carolina Wilmington is very proud of the student-athletes on this team, who compete athletically the same way they do academically: with tremendous heart, drive and courage. I hope their commitment to excellence will be rewarded with your ongoing support for their team and athletics at UNCW.

The Seahawks’ dedication to their sports and their studies is matched only by their determination to succeed as citizens of the world. Led by UNCW’s coaches and athletics staff, our student-athletes contribute to Southeastern North Carolina as volunteers for numerous organizations, mentors for younger students at area schools, and role models of active, healthy lifestyles.

Just as our student-athletes do everything they can to support this community they love so much, they require your support to continue on their journey of learning and within their athletic endeavors. I encourage you to show the Seahawks that you’re behind them by attending home games, supporting scholarships for student-athletes, joining the Seahawk Club and sharing your UNCW pride on social media.

Best wishes to the softball team and Coach Kristy Norton for a terri c year. Go Seahawks!

• Credentials All requests for media credentials must be made as early as possible by contacting UNCW’s Athletic Comuni-cations offi ce. Credentials are issued to accred-ited members of the working media only, and all requests will be evalu-ated and prioritized. Credentials can be mailed if time al-lows. Otherwise, they may be picked up at the ticket gate of the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

• Photo Guidelines The NCAA has established a policy to control congestion in the photog-raphy areas during soccer games. Only photographers on assignment are given photo passes, and they must shoot along the East sidelines of the playing fi eld, keeping their me-dia passes visible at all times.

• Post-Game Media Availability Both coaches and selected players are available upon request following the game. Interviews will take place on the fl oor at Hanover Hall. Requests for opponent team members should be directed to their respective SID or a member of the UNCW Athletic Communications staff. Those inter-views will take place on the fi eld. The NCAA mandated 15-minute “cooling off” period will be enforced.

• General Interviews Day-to-day interviews with the coaching staff and players are encour-aged. Please contact volleyball SID Jarrett Abelson at (910) 962-3252 to arrange coach/player interviews. Re-quests for interviews must be cleared at least 24 hours in advance.

• Practice Interviews Nearly all UNCW practices are open to the media. Interviews may be conducted before or after practice. The recommended time slot for inter-views is before practice. Please call Jarrett Abelson for practice times. To confi rm interviews, contact Abelson prior to arrival.

• Telephone Interviews In the event you are unable to talk in person to an athlete or coach, we will attempt to arrange a telephone in-terview at a time convenient to both parties. Please allow ample time to set up a mutually agreeable date and location for those involved.

• Game Day Interviews No interviews will be given prior to the game, with the exception of pre-game radio shows.

head Coach Kristy Norton

Kristy Norton, who helped turn James Madison into one of the top soft-ball programs in the Colonial Athletic Association, is in her second sea-son as head coach of the UNCW softball program. Just the fourth coach in the 28-year history of fast-pitch softball at UNCW, Norton helped the Seahawks enjoy a solid 2013 campaign that

saw the squad post its highest win total in six seasons. Under Norton’s tutelage, UNCW showed marked improvements nearly every major offensive statistical category, including appearances on the program’s all-time lists for doubles (62), walks (155), run scored (192) and total bases (440). Individually, senior shortstop Lauren Buckworth became just the fourth player in program history to earn First-Team All-CAA accolades after leading the Seahawks with a .355 batting average and 55 hits, including a team-best 14 doubles. Norton joined the Seahawks in June 2012 after spending seven seasons with the Dukes and carrying the Harrisonburg, Va., school to its fi rst CAA tournament crown and NCAA Tournament berth in 2009. Under Norton’s instruction, JMU fea-tured the best offensive season in the program’s history in 2007, setting sin-gle-season marks for batting average (.311), slugging percentage (.472), runs scored (278), home runs (42), and RBI (264). The Dukes were ranked nationally in batting average (14th), slugging per-centage, (24th) and runs scored (36th) en route to a school-record 37 victories that season.Norton has had 24 players receive a total of 42 All-CAA and CAA All-Rookie Team accolades during her time with the program, while two players, Ashley Burnham and Jenn Chavez, earned CAA Player-of-the-Year honors under her tu-telage. Chavez was the fi rst Duke to earn the award in 2007 and Burnham was the league’s fi rst two-time recipient (2010 & 2012).

Jimmy BassAthletic Director

The UNCW athletic department continues to make tremendous strides under the leadership of Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass.

Since taking over the helm of the program in October of 2010, the Seahawks have won more Colonial Athletic Association championships than any other conference member over the last three years. Overall, UNCW has captured 11 CAA titles, including three crowns in 2012-13.

Bass introduced a comprehensive strategic plan upon his arrival and the Seahawks embraced it with great success, excelling in the athletic arena and also in the classroom.

With a recognized expertise in marketing and fund raising, the North Carolina native restructured the department’s fund raising arm and orchestrated a $2 million renovation to venerable Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks also reached a sponsorship consulting partnership with IMG Worldwide.

Before accepting the UNCW post, Bass spent three years in external operations at East Carolina after holding similar positions at Mississippi State, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, UNCW and Davidson. He served as UINCW’s rst full-time fundraiser in 1986, bolstering athletic scholarship efforts and increasing membership in the Seahawk Club three-fold during his rst stay.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the National Association of Athletic Development Directors, Bass is beginning his second year as president of the Colonial Athletic Association.

He is married to the former Sarah Ruark and the couple has a son, Corey.
