    Investigation of Electrically Induced Fires

    Large number of fires in India are attributed to electrical

    faults and product malfunction.

    One estimate is that more than 80% of fires in India arecaused by electrical faults.

    Phase I

    Conduct literature review to categorize types of electrically induced

    fires. Develop statistical data of fires from electrical sources from the US,

    UK, China and compare with data from India. Compare data between Gujarat and Karnataka

    Investigate and document some well-known fires in attributed toelectrical faults. Examples are:

    Electrical Fires at IIT GN Carlton Towers (Bangalore) Maharashtra Mantralaya (Mumbai) Electronic Trade Show (Meerut) Others (for extra credit)

    Two teams will be selected to visit UL for training Conduct power quality measurements at IIT GN Design electrical safety lab at IIT GN Measurements of power quality Design of experiments to study electrically induced fires

    Deploy power quality measurement equipment minimum of twocities in India and measurement power quality parameters UL and IIT GN will identify the locations

    Communicate power quality study to stakeholders through

    technical forums and presentation to UL India Fire Safety Council Develop a electrical safety lab at IIT GN
