WELCOME TO THE 9TH ANNUAL TACOMA FILM FESTIVALTFF is a celebration of independent film mirroring the diverse and eclectic sensibilities of Western Washington’s second largest city. Presenting live-action, documentary and animated short and feature film selections from the Pacific Northwest and all over the world, TFF prides itself on showcasing the connectedness of local, national, and international film.

#TFF2014: WHAT, WHERE AND WHENThis year’s festival will include over 100 different films all screening publicly in Pierce County for the first time ever! Screenings will be held at four different venues: The Grand Cinema, The University of Washington-Tacoma, Tacoma Community College, and The Museum of Glass.In addition to an intensive week of film screenings, TFF 2014 will offer a variety of interactive events including dozens of post-film filmmaker Q&A discussions, workshops led by local filmmakers, dinner and movie events catered by some of Tacoma’s favorite Restaurants, and more!

A VERY SPECIAL GUEST: LEONARD MALTINLeonard Maltin, one of the most recognized and respected film critics and historians of all time, will be attending TFF! Festival attendees will have two opportunities to watch and discuss films with him on Friday October 10th and Saturday, October 11th (event details on page 10).

FILM FESTIVAL JUDGES

Philip CowanFEATURE DOCUMENTARYPhilip was named Executive Director of The Grand Cinema in 2006. In the 8 years Philip has been leading The Grand its attendance has consistently increased and programing has expanded to include Tacoma Film Camp, The Tuesday Film Series, 25 New Faces of Independent Film, and The Classic Film Series. Philip’s favorite part of his job is researching and selecting the films that play at The Grand.

Jason GanwichSHORTSAn Emmy nominated Television Producer, Jason is an active photographer and filmmaker as well as educator – serving as lead instructor at The Grand Cinema’s Tacoma Film Camp and previously as a teacher at the Tacoma School of the Arts. Jason was recently voted “Best Tacoma Photographer” by readers of the Weekly Volcano. Ganwich.com

Lisa FruichantieFEATURE NARRATIVEA long time organizer of film, music, theater, and visual arts events in Tacoma, Lisa has been a projectionist at The Grand since 2004. She also works as costumer, stylist and props assistant for film, dance and stage projects. In addition to her service to the arts community, Lisa also serves as the Events and Development Coordinator at The Rainbow Center.

LEONARD MALTIN is one of the most recognized and respected film critics and historians of our time. He appears regularly on Entertainment Tonight, Turner Classic Movies, Reelz Channel, Comcast Cable and is the former host of the movie review program Hot Ticket. He has also hosted, written and co-produced a number of television and home video documentary specials on film. Additionally, Maltin is the author of several mainstream books on cinema and an accomplished freelancer and lecturer.Born in New York City in 1950, Maltin credits the huge volume of old movies shown on New York television - and access to the City’s famous revival theaters, as well as the Museum of Modern Art - with his “basic training” in film history. He began his writing career at age 15,

Benson has worked in the Animation/film industry for over 14 years. Educated at Capilano University and Sheridan College in the Traditional and Computer animation program. Benson currently works in Burbank, California for the Walt Disney Animation Studios. His credits include Warner Bros’ Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sony’s The Smurfs, Hotel Transylvania and most recently Disney’s Wreck-it Ralph, Frozen and their latest feature Big Hero 6 due out this November. Aside from working as an Animator, Benson is also an illustrator/designer and has had art shown in Tacoma, LA, Dublin and recently Spain.
